    Whoa Nelly! Putting that dirty grit down your plumbing will cause major havoc! That stuff sets like concrete in the pipes!

    I got this tumbler yesterday. I didn't even use it 24 hours tumbling Fluorite. The Fluorite was ready for it's polish. I started it in the evening and noticed by the next morning I saw something blue in it. The bowl had flaked and large pieces of the plastic bowl were flaked up. It was so weird. I didn't overload it. I had it filled properly and level. I called them today and was told to send pictures and they will see what they can do. I don't understand. It was level with a perfect slurry and rolling perfectly. I wanted to love this. I hope they make it right for me.

    I can’t believe they show him pouring the grit slurry down the sink drain. That stuff will harden like cement in your pipes.

      My favorite part of the video is when the guy pours each grit into his hand lol 😆 there is lagit a caution sticker on the box that says WARNING CANCER and REPRODUCTIVE HARM.

      The sink he used is one that dumps into his yard. It’s a garage sink.

      I want one of those! Can I make my own? I wonder? I have drains in my yard. Should I worry about grit going there?

    • @beatfarmerfan

      @@ksturdevant5579 I have never seen a home made one, you can buy them that will
      last a long time.
      I use 4lb. Lortone tumblers, they are great.
      You can wash and drain the rocks in the yard, but not in any drains.
      When it dries it gets hard like cement.
      You don’t want to have to jackhammer your floor to put new drains in.

    I read about how to make an industrial tumbler out of a rear axle of a big semi truck with the rims and tires in place. You want to cut an opening in the highest part of the rim to load rocks. The article said a cover is not needed but I always thought if I was going to do one I would have a hinged door sealed with inner tube rubber. The idea is to set up a motor geared down so the tires rotates slowly and all the rocks stay in the lowest part of the tire at all times tumbling over each other. Each tire can hold about 100 lbs of rocks and you have 4 tires going at all times each one with a different grit. Always use same tire for the same grit. You rotate the rocks once a week and you have a 100 lbs of polished tumbled stones each week. I have been wondering if you could use quartz sand as grit for the first stage to do the rough rounding off? I am posting this on all videos about rock hounding to spread the idea, if this is you channel and you do not like that let me know.
    The fact that the tumbling will all take place in a rubber tire should help keep the noise down. The rocks should never touch the rim. I have suggested to people that they make a sound proof shed just big enough to be practical so the noise will be minimized. Plus the rubber in a tire is thick and should absorb a lot of the noise. Also you should have a small fan on the motor to keep it cool. A high quality motor will be a must as it will run 24 hours a day. I am no expert but with the proper gearing the motor should not be under too much stress.
    I would sell the tumbled stones. Once tumbled, you grade them by quality and type. Some would be really valuable. I bet you could average $10 usd per pound with just good found material and more if you have high grade material. Definitely not for the weekend rock hound but if you sell stones or want to, what a cheap way to start. You could tumble other people's rocks for a fee or shares too. You could make one with car tires for a smaller scale operation. There has to be a lot of people with a 30 year in the making, 3 ton pile of rocks out behind their house. With this they could see results from all that collecting.

    Whoever wrote the assembly directions for the TV-5 should be taken out back and whipped with a garden hose. It’s not that hard and I can’t understand WHY they wrote the directions the way they did. Here are the steps to assembly:
    1) Insert the threaded rod into the base and hand tighten it.
    2) Put one of the three washers over the rod and slide it to the bottom of the rod so it rests on top of the black base, and bottom of the threaded rod.
    3) Place the metal nut on and thread it down the threaded rod until it reaches the bottom and sits on top of the metal washer you put on in step 2.
    4) Tighten the metal nut down but do not over tighten.
    5) Place the bowl onto the threaded metal rod and lower it onto the base so it sits on top of the nut you just tightened down in step 4.
    6) Place the second of the three metal washers onto the threaded metal rod until it rests on top of the “tower” or “cone” in the middle of your bowl.
    7) Place the first of the two black rubber washers onto the threaded metal rod. Make sure it forms an upside down T, and that the end with the brass insert is pointed up. Thread this onto the metal rod and down onto the washer you just put on in step 6. You can easily get it to bulge by hand this way as the horrible instructions say it needs to do.
    8) Place the lid onto the top of your bowl, insert the third and last metal washer onto the threaded rod sticking up from the center of your clear plastic lid once the lid is on.
    9) Take the second and last black rubber washer, again making sure it forms an upside down T shape and thread it onto the exposed metal rod in the center of your lid. Tighten it down by hand onto your lid.
    10) You now know how to assemble your TV-5! Process your rocks and enjoy!
    P.S. Seriously Lyman, fire your technical writer. Good lord.

      Thanks for this. I looked at the washer and nut after reading the "instructions" and thought "where the hell are these supposed to go?"

    • @X86BSD1
      @X86BSD1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nathankarnes1782 Yeah I had the same experience. Whoever wrote the instructions had never used a TV-5 nor actually put one together. I don't know where those instructions came from but they are not for the TV-5. It took me a bit to figure out how to get the bulge to happen but once I did I was like "Ok now go write this process into the comments because you can't possibly be the only one to read the included instructions and think "Uhhhh... What?". I'm glad it helped. It's really a nice little tumblr and you will really enjoy what comes out of it. :) Happy tumbling!!

    • @X86BSD1
      @X86BSD1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kimdedominicis6893 Ugh! Really? So i can think of two immediate solutions you may try. First obviously is to call Lyman and tell them to send you a bag of the nuts and washers. Second, if that fails, you can get the washers from a hardware store. Lowes, Homedepot, Aces, etc. I've seen videos of people using wingnuts with the washers because wingnuts are easier to get on and off and tighten. So you may want to try that also if you cant get lyman to just send you a small bag of extra washers and nuts.

    I thought it was a really bad idea to use plastic pellets in a vibratory tumbler?

    There seems to be an error in the printed chart for vibratory rock tumbling in the directions that come with the tumbler. In Section III: Vibratory Tumbler Instructions - Water Required
    If rocks are dry add 4 tbs. (tablespoons) for 8" bowl or 2 oz. for 10" bowl. This isn't near enough water.
    In the video it says to ad 3 to 4 oz. of water for the 8" bowl.

    Does anyone know a way to stop this tumbler from blowing dry polish out of the bowl? I'm polishing with corn cob media and very expensive dry polish. After a couple of hours I have dry polish dust all around the tumbler bowl and base. I have it on very tight too. I worry if I was doing a wet polish there could be water getting out as well. Anyone know of a rubber seal or anything that could help keep everything in the tumbler?

      i got you. put all your rocks in a bowl. fill with water above the rocks. then dump all the water out. dump tge wet rocks in and now you have enough water. NO STANDING WATER! use a spray bottle to increase the water until your material is movin around.

    • @MN-mw8ww
      @MN-mw8ww 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Megan did you ever figure out the right amount of water? Ive noticed with mine, that without enough water in these it just vibrates the rocks and filler in a circle. Once I add more water, it tumbles as it should. I think it might be because of its shape? I dont know.

      barrels are good for stage 1; stages 2,3,4 are best done in a vibratory tumbler.
