How to make Vibratory Tumbler Machine With Fan (Rust Removal)

- DIY : I built a parts tumbler that vibrates to remove rust from bolts and nuts.
These are the ones that other TH-camrs have introduced and I have made changes to make them easier to make.
The vibrating type rotates the sand well, and from the looks of it, it seemed to work better than a barrel grinder.
However, they are not as effective as tumbler machines should be, and I suspect that others are making false videos.
It's a shame because professional vibrating tumblers cost hundreds of dollars and I tried my best to make a DIY version that would be easy to make.

Good job in including the failed attempt alongside the successful one. Not only did it make the video more enjoyable, but likely saved some people a lot of work.
I would appreciate it if you could think that way. While I do believe this tool is more high-performance compared to others, it's not capable of removing rust quickly, and at best, it can only smooth the surface of plastic, you know.
Great attempts !! As for removeing rust takes a life time ! What you built is used to clean,,,,deburring, ,,, and smoothing edges,!,,,,,,, as well as creating a Satine finishing on new parts
That is correct. I think the use of this tool is not for rust removal, but for deburring and edge smoothing. The plastic parts actually turned out beautifully. Probably the same for aluminum parts.
Great effort, I like it, the simple design for me is brilliant, it’s the best I’ve seen, I’m going to make one. Like another commenter stated maybe using a bigger material would work better. Thanks for sharing 👍😃
I am glad you liked it. However, I don't think this tool is suitable for rust removal, so I don't recommend its production in my opinion.
I loved the creative process of making the machine. I've been restoring antique handtools for quite awhile and nothing beats a good wire wheel to remove rust from threads of nuts and bolts though. I also use Evaporust and let the pieces sit for a couple of hours, or over night if really bad. The a light brass wire wheel to help remove any residue. EVAPORUST is all natural, no harmful chemicals is biodegradable,( but I do take it to a chemical depot to rid of it due to the stuff that is left behind in it.) But best of all, you can keep reusing it many times before it needs to be changed out.

I too think wire wheels are the best way to remove rust. However, it takes a long time to polish the bolts and nuts of one motorcycle, so I made this tool, but unfortunately it did not help.
The rust remover you recommend is expensive in Japan, but I have a similar product that I will try next time. Repeated use is an attractive product for me.

Wouldn't it polish through that soft aluminum pan? How long will the fan run? The bearings in most of those fans can barely take being out of balance from dust.
There may be holes in the aluminum pan after long-term use. I think the fan will probably break at the same time.
I wonder if there is Tungsten/Wolfram sand or rests from cutting that can be bought online. To see if the density of the abrasive matters.

Good idea that works but I think the fan will get damaged after few uses due to centrifugal force.
This device is more useful for polishing and polishing parts that have scratches after sanding and need to be polished and smoothed. In addition, the bigger the machine and the coarser the seeds, the better the result.❤
It's true that the bolts and nuts attached to the fan should be a little smaller, but surprisingly the fan was not broken.

How much did the whole thing cost?
Prices may vary depending on the region, so I can't provide exact amounts, but approximately, a PC fan is around 1500 yen, a chiffon cake mold is about 1000 yen, a used adapter costs around 300 yen, and including other items like wood and headphone jacks, it would be around 4000 yen.
When converted to dollars, it's around 28 dollars.
Just looking at commercial media, I think the media needs to be much bigger, probably in order to increase the impact forces. Small media like that being used here may work on softer materials, but not steel.
Now I'm inspired, I might try gluing alumna media to small stones to try in my DIY barrel tumbler.
Maybe you are right in your consideration, but I haven't tried it because I didn't think commercial media could reach the small gaps.
However, I think your observation is correct because when I put plastic products in this tool, it scrapes off a thin layer of the surface.
Very nice little helper for a workshop, I have 600W motor from some old machinery so I will try with that 😈😂
It doesn't remove much rust from steel and is useful for shaving a little off the surface of plastic, but I don't recommend it.
The motor needs more than 3000 rpm than the power.
@@NITAKA-jpn If you want to remove rust you should try electrolysis. You can use the same 12v power supply. It is annoying because you must make electrical connections to every metal part, but it works very well.

The reason I made this tool is because I wanted to do other work while I was removing the rust. As a result, I have not used this tool...
The electrolysis is used to remove rust from the inside of motorcycle fuel tanks.
@@NITAKA-jpn Another advantage of electrolysis is that you can use the same setup to apply coatings to your parts after the rust is off. You can plate your parts in zink or nickel. Even chrome, but it is hard to make that look perfect.
You can do all that overnight or while you work on other projects.
@@finalmidnight I didn't know that it could be electrolytically coated. Next time I'll look up how to do it on WikiHow. But it seems like it would take a lot of time to do that to bolts and nuts. I'd like to come up with a device that would make it easier.

Can this make round crystal stones which are often used for bracelets?
Probably not. I did some research and found that the hardness of a bolt/nut is 4, while a crystal is 7, so this tool, which cannot even remove rust from steel, will not meet your request.
try putting a burnishing chemical mix with water or change the media to a heavier one .
I have a feeling that it would be effective to suppress the movement of the abrasive as you say.

I'm sorry if my answer is off the mark because I'm not good at English and I didn't understand your question perfectly.
The reason there are so many holes for the bolts is to increase the strength of the bowl by making more so that it does not come off due to vibration. There is no particular meaning. The big hole in the center is because this is a chiffon cake mold. I chose this mold for better sand movement.
Simple, but as long as the bearings on the fan last, it is better to make an eccentric.

The smooth movement of the sand suggests that the issue might lie with the media.
Definitely the media. Abrasive media designed for the purpose would work best; they’re usually triangular granules that can get inside screw grooves for bolts and maybe nuts, depending on size.
While there is also the option to mix media and add things like Sandblasting media for cleaning tight spaces, it’s usually best to use sandblasting for that purpose. Vibratory tumblers need the right media, sufficient amount of vibratory power and sometimes also need to have water as part of the process for it to work, and even then the surface cleaning will not be 100% especially for tight spaces the media cannot reach.
Though, this machine is good proof of concept, it’s best to use a purpose built motor and secure counterbalance combination, either directly on motor shaft if it an sustain the forces, or belt driven to avoid stress on the motor bearings.

I think you are right.
I wanted to try the dedicated media, but unfortunately I could only find large ones in Japan.
As a result, it was a failure and I stopped using this tool.
Amass a bunch of old spark plugs and get a hammer. I suspect pulverizing some ceramic to use a a crude media would likely work. That said, I would tend to thing that leaving it on for a longer run, would work, it would not using the current media as it cant be small enough to penetrate the tiny groves in the bolts. I am going to try this though. I may use a shaft mounted counterbalance. Thanks for the inspiration. Good idea to use the rubber tubing @@NITAKA-jpn

You can find them in fluted tube cake or chiffon cake molds.

you need more corondom to get more weight and more pressure and you need more power to get good result ....rubber coating for container .....good job

I created this tool with the intention of achieving efficient polishing even with small quantities and in a short amount of time by considering the movement of sand. However, the expected results were not obtained. On the other hand, in the case of a drum-type tool, the gentle movement of the sand requires extended polishing time, and in order to achieve the same capability, it unavoidably needs to be larger in size.
It is difficult in many ways.

きちんとしたメディア買って実験することをお勧めします。
砂とか軽いものではちっとも研磨されないはず。
確かにアルミナなどは軽い！！ 着眼点が他の方とは異なり当たっている気がする
でも日本で売ってる研磨石のサイズが大きいのしかなかったので流石に試そうとは思わなかった‥
別の方がアルミナに水を入れるようにっていうのが簡単でいいかも知れない

I think if you use a more aggressive medium it would be better. But for rust removal a rolling tumbler is better

An overnight soak in vinegar or 10 minutes in muratic acid works much better and without all the work.
I hesitate to use chemicals because they rust faster.
It is a design error, the rubber on the legs does not allow enough deformation and that is why the device does not vibrate well. Change the legs for springs or something more flexible and use sand and you will have better results.
I see. However I do not think there is much difference. Because it seems to me that the deformation of the spring to withstand the weight of the sand is about the same as the rubber used.

The design and sand movement are nice. But I can't get rid of the rust.
I also think that with time this tool can remove rust, but I would rather use other methods to remove rust than using this tool for a long time.

偶然だけど私も同じくケーキ型を利用して振動バレルを自作（試行錯誤中）しているのでとても不安。
湿式にしてセラミックメディアで石を磨く予定。

これを作ってわかったことはTH-camrは嘘つきが多いということｗ （他より高性能なはずなのに効果がない）
もうこの道具は使用していないので錆取りできなかった原因はわかりませんが、おそらく問題は研磨に使用したメディアと時間でしょう。紙ヤスリなどに使用されるアルミナ#20では対象物（ボルトの溝などに対し）少し大きかったのかもしれませんし、作動時間も１時間では多少磨くことができても錆を取るとまではいかなかったようです。
思ったほどの性能はなく研磨に時間がかかるため改良しようとは思えず、ボルト・ナットの錆取りであれば卓上グラインダーで磨いたほうが早いです。
研磨石であるセラミックメディアを使い石を磨くのであればおそらく大丈夫かと思います。
セラミックメディア自体が大きいのでボルトやナットには適していないとはいえ少し小ぶりな石であれば磨くことは可能かと思います。
ただ双方ともに重いので回転バレル研磨機の方がいいかもしれません。
結果がどうなったか楽しみにしています。

貴君や他のネット情報も参考にしセラミックメディア（重切削6mm三角）と金剛砂（#60）を混ぜて使うことにしました。
後は水と中性洗剤を少量混ぜて本日（12/11 12:00ごろ）からスタートです。
因みに石はオパールで層の周りの砂や母岩を取り除くことが目的です。
寝室に置いているので（ほかに適当な部屋がない🤣）２２時～７時までは休憩。
夜か朝、簡単な状況を連絡しましょうか。
それとも１週間後の連絡の方が良いでしょうか。

やはり知りたいのは短時間でどのぐらい削れるかです。なので朝にどの程度効果が知りたいですね（経過も知りたいが…）。
あと完成品は私が作ったような振動バレル研磨機なのか回転バレル研磨機どちらかなのかも気になるところです。
しかしオパールですか…。少し調べたところ宝石の中ではわりと硬度が低いようなので研磨石によって削れたり欠けたりしないか心配です。
最初はちょくちょく確認する方がいいかもしれませんね。

夜には少し削れているようでした。
夜間はパワーを落として稼働していました。
朝にはこれまた少し削れているようです。
オパールを２０個以上入れているので詳しい状態はよく分からない状態ですが😅
ただ１週間を目安にしていましたので良い感じかなと思っています。
作ったのは振動バレルです。
DCモーターがもう一つあるので、その内回転バレルも作ろうかと思っています。
オパールの欠けはありませんでした。
オパールも少し削るのが目的ですから削れるのはOKだと思っています。（程度によりますが）
実はちょくちょく確認しています😄
PC電源にPWM制御をかませて回転制御をしているのですが、PWM制御器が安価な中国製なのかパワーがガタ落ちしている様なのです。
安定電源が欲しくなります。
1週間‥ やはりそれぐらいは必要なのかもしれませんね。ボルト・ナットでも綺麗に錆を落とすには1日ぐらい必要みたいですし‥
振動バレルを1週間使ったらどのような削れ方をするのか楽しみですね。回転バレルだと丸になるのかな？
PC電源を使っているということは結構大きなモーターを使っていますね。それだと確かに安定化電源が欲しくなるところです。
実は‥ でもないのですが、安定化電源、電圧、電流系のたぐいは購入者が持て余すことが多いためハードオフやヤフオクに安価で大量にあります。
今後も使うようでしたら購入を検討してみるのも有りかもしれまんよ。

The possibility of this is high. But surprisingly, fans do not break.
the problem with this solution need a lot of hrs to make clean stuff(12hr at least) and the fan bearing are not make to operate at full speed for this long time!
Over 12 hours! ? I was surprised, but I actually thought that was all I needed. I can't stand the noise before the fan bearings on this tool break.

I'm a mechanic and I clean these things every day. A bench grinder with a wire wheel cleans all those parts to like new in about a minute. you could leave those things to vibrate three days and it wouldn't clean them half as well. Just sayin'.
I am a former mechanic and I have the same opinion. I just had high hopes for this tool so I made it. I did not get the result I wanted...
I dont believe the machine will last long, fan bearing is not made to shake like that.

It be easier if you just dip them into a cup of muriatic acid for the stripping of the rust.
With that method, if you don't coat it quickly after taking it out, it will rust quickly... Annoying

@@NITAKA-jpn просто есть опыт обработки металла, и твёрдость абразива имеет большое значение. Чем твёрже абразив и множество острых углов на этом абразиве тем лучше идёт обработка.

I made Making my own Cheap Ultrasonic Cleaner (check video) with similar construction and this one has been used for over 50 hours and has not broken. However, it would be better to use a small size bolt and nut to install it.
you people taken too much time to remove rust , I advise so simple , Just put in salt acid for 30 minutes and all rust has been gone .
No need any machine .
