This is something I stumbled across online and had to try it out! Rock tumbling is a popular but very niche hobby and there aren't that many TH-cam channels dedicated to it. If you want something incredibly relaxing to watch, I highly recommend rock tumbling and gemstone/geode hunting videos! Tumbling rocks that you found yourself is the next step to this hobby and sounds like a really enjoyable pastime. However if you don't want to do that just yet then it's very easy to buy all kinds of raw gemstones online. These are surprisingly affordable and it feels so satisfying to hold a crystal that you polished yourself.

♥ Rock Tumbling FAQ ♥
1) How noisy is the machine?
It's definitely too loud to have in the same room so you will need a secluded place to put it. If you're doing it outside, make sure it's sheltered from wind, rain, sunlight, animals, children and there are no temperature extremes. I find the noise very ASMR-ish and enjoyed listening to it through the balcony door! It's great white noise if you have problems relaxing or sleeping!
2) How much grit should I use?
The rough guide is 1 tbsp per 1 pound/500g of rock. The packets from the National Geographic Tumbler all contain around 1 tbsp.
3) How much electricity do rock tumblers use?
It depends on the size of your machine and electricity rates. The National Geographic one is very small so it actually uses less electricity than leaving a light bulb on for the same amount of time. Running it continuously should cost around $1 per week. This might be slightly more expensive in countries with higher mains voltage, so if you're in Europe then calculate €1-2 per week.
4) Can I leave the tumbler unattended?
Of course you can leave the house while it's running however I wouldn't recommend going on holiday or leaving it for many days. The biggest risk is that it might break and you will ruin your tumbling cycle. It's not ideal to leave the stones sitting inside the sludge if the machine is off.
5) What happens if it breaks?
The key moving part of the tumbler is actually a small rubber belt. You get a replacement one with the kit so you can easily fix that yourself. If the motor breaks completely then contact their customer service. The machine has a 2-year warranty and based on Amazon reviews they offer a good service and will send you a new one.
6) Can I reduce the noise of the machine?
There are methods using ceramic sticks, rubber pieces or plastic pellets to cushion the stones so they don't make as much noise. You can find exact guidelines on rock tumbling blogs. Another method is to place a large bucket or box over the machine while it's running.
7) Where can I find crystal in the wild?
I'm afraid I'm not sure about this either and it's something I really want to look into! Generally speaking, river or streambeds, lakes, forests and mountainous regions often have raw crystals. These can be hard to tell from normal stones which is why you need a rock tumbler to polish them. For more details, search "your location + gemstone finds" and there should be rock-hunting blogs with tips.

Fluorite is a water soluble mineral.... It didn't disappear, it dissolved.
@@noname-kx4cu its only Slightly water soluble. It disappeared because the other stones are much harder than fluorite 🤷♀️ you cant put a 4 hardness in with those 6s and 7s... theyll destroy it

For anyone who this might benefit, I have some honest feedback as someone who has tumbled rocks for a decade or so:
-- As Maqaroon learned, Mohs hardness scale is very important. The mix of stones in your barrel should be at most about a difference of 1.0 (ex stones between 6.5 and 7.5), but even less than 1.0 is better. All agates, quartz-based rocks, and jaspers are generally great to mix together in the same barrel
-- Things below a 6 don't tend take on a great polish
-- The first stage takes the longest, this is the shaping stage. If your stones start out super rough with pits and irregularities, it can actually take many rounds of course grind to smooth them out, depending on how perfect you want the final product to be. I have at times kept stones in stage 1 for several months finally get them shaped well
-- If you're only using a 1 barrel setup such as in the video, you must rinse and clean out the barrel crazy thoroughly, as even a few particles of grit from the previous stage will contaminate the batch as you move to the next stage. When people get more into this hobby, they tend to have a dedicated barrel for each stage so that this is not an issue
-- If you've done everything correctly, the final stones will have a very high polish and will be so shiny that they appear wet despite being dry, so there is no need for using any oils to make them look shiny

i know many crystals can become quite a lot more brittle when exposed to water for a long time. that is also the case for flourite. it won’t immediately dissolve like selenite, but longer exposure to water will seep into the crystal and make it more brittle. hope this helps, but please when rock tumbling or washing crystals check how they react to water :)

I used to do this all the time when I was a kid, but now I couldn't do this to my rocks. I wouldn't want to lose the unique cleavage and texture that rocks have. Like fluorite has insane cleavage that gets lost in the polishing process.

Those flourite stones are actually really cute, they look like tiny bits of sea glass. They have alot of potential for some beautiful jewelery
We go rock houding often here in Colorado. Getting the stones from your own "backyard" and tumbling them is so satisfactory.

Rock tumbling sounds nice but I want to know how to find the unrefined stones on nature because part of the fun is refining what you collected.
Also how to identify unrefined gemstones from stones because I really can't tell. I only have obsidian because you already find it refined on the ground because they were arrowheads or part of one (that also means you only find really small gemstones but at the same time they're part of history). Sometimes you find bigger ones that were probably part of stone furniture or something (a person found a whole ancient green jade mirror and brought it to the museum).
Get into rockhounding! There are tons of resources available about your local geology. Some rocks, gems, and minerals can only be found in certain geologic areas, so hopefully you get lucky! You can find these kinds of books and pamphlets at your library, online, or at your local gem and mineral club.
Actually identifying minerals can be tough (im taking a mineralogy course at my college) wheeeeeeew boy. But again, they have lots of resources available to help you learn. Start learning some mineralogy terminology and what's used to identify gems and minerals (luster, streak, hardness, chemical composition etc)
And if you're REALLY serious and want to get certified, there's an online course you can take for only 400$. But that's definitely not needed.
Just start reading and learning and plan some local rock hunting trips!

You should find streams, creeks rivers and lakes with rocky shores..I find some amazing stones and fossils that way..I love crystallized fossils most lol

As a fan of geology, I only enjoy rock tumbling only when done on rough material that doesn’t have a good crystal structure. Otherwise it does kinda bother me:p

I'm shocked youve never heard of rock tumbling. I always thought it was a fairly well know hobby that kids do. I dont know anyone who didnt have a little bag of shiny smooth tumbled rocks as a kid in the 90's.
I had tumbled rocks as a kid from a small plastic rock tumbler that I ran once before my dad got too annoyed by it

In my country rock tumbling for kids was never "a thing". But I knew that it existed.
And then there were these kids' magazines that came with little accessories or toys, they sometimes had bags of "rock dust" with already tumbled small gems in there. You were only supposed to wash the dust away with a strainer and there were your shiny gems. I loved these as a kid.
Now as an adult, I'm still always on the look for beautiful rocks outside and display them in my house, decorate plant pots with them, etc.

i havent watched the whole video but i’ve had a question about these. do you have to buy the special rocks to go with this, or could you throw in a stone from your backyard??
not all stones are precious gems, youd be best of buying raw gemstones which are cheaper than they look, anywhere between 5 and 15 dollars depending on how much you get and what they are. Well, unless you want very smooth pebbles, but depending one what youre backyard stones are they might also disappear into the grinder so you could try to figure out what theyre composed of first.
I've seen people tumble larger rocks that they find while hiking, but they normally find stuff like quartz or jasper. Basically, it depends on what you find and how big it is. If it's a small rock and you don't know what kind of rock it is it could grind away, but you know what you found and it's hardness, go for it! besides trial and error are part of the fun!
Long story short, if the stone you put in doesn't have a decent crystalline structure inside, it'll probably just crumble....or you'll get a smooth looking river rock. They won't be gems necessarily.
You absolutely can tumble any rock you find. Just be careful not to overdo it as you may not know the hardness of it and it could basically disappear. Depending on the rock you may just get a really smooth gray/brownish result but satisfying nevertheless.
Soft rocks won’t polish. Start with your favorite form of quartz.

My grandpa has one of these, and occasionally when we were ypunger he would give me and my sister cool tumbled rocks. I don't think I have the patience for using a rock tumbler though 😅

Always use plastic or ceramic pellets! It does reduce noise and it protects your rocks from damage during the tumbling process. It’s really not that much of a hassle to clean them off and reuse them. Also adding ivory soap flakes to the final polish burnishes the stones and makes them shinier 😍

I wanted to be a geologist for years as a kid, and we purchased a rock tumbler! I remember putting it in my garage to run because it took a long time and it was really loud, but I still have some of the rocks I tumbled in my collection!

just a heads up! with tumbling rocks like fluorite, malachite and some other rocks, mixed with water for a while the water can become toxic whether it is toxic to ingest or to the skin so be careful!
Our family was into rock hounding, tumbling and lapidary very much back in the 60s and 70s. Wouldn't mind doing some of that again, but I'm buried in too many other hobbies and cats right now. It's a great hobby!

I'm a subscriber / follower to your current videos but stumbled over this. I don't know if you still monitor comments but this took me back to childhood. I loved my rock tumbler running in my room (although it could be loud) for white noise. Some might argue it's too loud, though. This makes me want to get back into the hobby. When I did it, the materials were nearly impossible to get. The web has changed everything. Even the raw gems are super affordable.

Is it necessary to tumble for all 4 steps? They looked good after the first step but it's just my personal opinion. Do the 4 packages contain different kind of powder ?
Well their is heavy duty rock tumblers that can only take a day or two to tumble but they will be pricey.
I guess it depends on personal taste, but the more you tumble your rocks (given they aren't super soft or water soluble) with more grits, the smoother and shinier they will be with less to none scratches or microfractures.

As a kid I was obsessed with collecting rocks, so much I filled two big tins of them. My mom eventually got mad at my rock collecting and forced me to get rid of all them to avoid insects (which I feel was an excuse to get rid of my collection) I wish I knew about rock tumbling when I was younger! I would’ve had so much amazing gemstones. I might start collecting again just to do rock tumbling!!
