    Been using my 27” i9 since November, and this thing has been amazing. The 5700xt 16gb, makes rendering silky smooth. I knew the m1 would be a beast of a chip, but not powerful enough to fit my workload needs. I’m excited to see what the new iMacs offer, nevertheless.

    • @alejmc
      @alejmc 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@larssssssssssssds what’s that conclusion based one? Any software can use 16GB of VRAM. That’s like saying you don’t need 64GB of system RAM because no software will use it, but we know they will, instead of swapping to SSD back and forth, the data will be kept on RAM, sometimes even the full application is kept on RAM for quick back to back launch.
      3D GPU Renderers like Octane, RedShift, VRay (GPU), etc have to put the scene meshes, materials, textures, etc on the GPU, 16GB means more of that scene can be put on the GPU... they do trade-offs when there’s not enough VRAM and start streaming, for example, textures from system RAM.

    Yep. Desperately needed a workstation upgrade (been using a 2011 12-core Mac Pro cheesegrater that basically stopped working when Mac OS stopped supporting NVidia graphics) and couldn't wait any longer. This iMac literally came out at the perfect time. I think I put my order in the day it was announced. Working perfectly so far. I did sell my 13" MacBook pro in early 2020 and am excited to own a laptop again later this year when the M1 14" version comes out.

    I didn't hesitate for one second in buying my daughter the 2020 27-inch i7 iMac. She's happy with it and provides more than enough power and speed. With upgradable memory, 8-core CPU, T2 chip. I just can't see it ever being too slow. The large boost in performance on paper a new M1X iMac would eventually provide just wouldn't be noticeable enough in day to day use (unless you're doing very high-end work) to justify waiting for the new M1X iMac and also dealing with the risk of design flaws and compatibility issues with the first model of a totally new design.

My desktop tower PC is 6 years old and I was ready to replace it. GPU situation is crazy and I would like an Intel iMac to run my virtual machines and use third-party memory to bring it up to 128 GB.

    The biggest problem is operationg system support. Last time when Apple switched from PowerPC to Intel, all of PowerPC based Macs were ruined because Apple discontinued MacOS for PowerPC within almost 2 years.

    • @TomO-nx1bd
      @TomO-nx1bd 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think Apple would do the same this time though. Their installed base of existing Intel computers is much more significant than PowerPC was back then. PowerPC Mac's back then made up a tiny desktop market share, maybe only like 2 percent. So Apple didn't have much to lose by dumping it. But today they would be abandoning an almost double digit desktop market share. Also consider that unlike back then, there is now functionality that only Intel Macs will ever have such as running other OS's (Boot Camp) further putting pressure on Apple to keep supporting the installed base.

    I’m glad I got mine in October when it was B.B.S (Before Big Sur). I’m a music producer and use a lot of third-party software so this iMac was and is the better fit for me. And I’m still on Catalina and do not plan on upgrading my OS anytime soon. It’s not broke and I’m not trying to fix it. I will, however, be upgrading my RAM to 64GB. I have 16GB right now.

    • @hillstones
      @hillstones 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The iMac 27" 2020 model originally shipped with Catalina 10.15.6, so even when Apple ships them now with Big Sur, you can still 'downgrade' it back to Catalina by changing the T2 security settings in the recovery mode to allow any OS installation and allow booting from external media. This would allow you to boot from a Catalina 10.15.7 USB installer flash drive and erase the internal drive and install Catalina. Anything that works in Catalina works in Big Sur. The Music app in Big Sur finally got some of the stripped iTunes features restored. I have had no major issues with Big Sur.

    • @robinbramlett110
      @robinbramlett110 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hillstones “Anything that works in Catalina works in Big Sur.” Not true, especially for music producers who rely on third-party software. At this point, many, but not all music software companies have made their software work with Big Sur or M1. If my computer would have shipped with Big Sur at the time I purchased I wouldn’t have been able to use my Universal Audio interface as it did not gain Big Sur compatibility until around two months later. Companies are catching up but not all work with Big Sur just yet.

    • @hillstones
      @hillstones 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you remove Apple's two 4GB SO-DIMMs, you will get faster performance with the two 16GB SO-DIMMS that you bought from OWC. Install the 16GB modules in slots 2 and 4. Mismatched memory sizes in all 4 slots causes the memory to run slower, at 2133MHz. Even if you re-arrange them so both 4GB modules are in slot 1 and 2 and the two 16GB modules are in slots 3 and 4 to get the 2667MHz, you lose the dual-channel feature and the memory runs even slower being forced to single-channel. That is why you will get the fastest memory performance with only the two 16GB modules installed in slots 2 and 4, and then later you can add two more 16GB modules to get the best performance with all 4 memory slots filled with matched memory. This has been well documented in a number of TH-cam videos and commenters confirming the slower performance with the mismatched memory.

      You know, that would be an interesting comparison, as the iMac is a better deal in many ways.
      base 5K iMac = $1799 (computer, 5K P3 display, apple keyboard and mouse)
      base M1 mini = $2246 (computer for $699 + LG Ultrafine 5K for $1299 + Apple magic keyboard for $149 + apple magic mouse for $99)
      Performance:
      iMac: Geekbench single-core 1127, geekbench multi-core 5654, geekbench metal gpu 37120
      Mini: Geekbench single 1689, geekbench multi 7401, geekbench metal 20556 (30% faster CPU but 45% slower GPU than the imac)
      The iMac is a better value if you care about apple peripherals and a high quality display, and it offers almost twice the GPU performance of the M1 mini. Note that the LG 5K is generally perceived as inferior to the iMac's screen, even though it uses the same panel. The mini is a better value if you bring your own peripherals, are not picky about screen quality, or you care about CPU performance more. For anything that requires lots of RAM there is no comparison, the mini doesn't stand a chance as it maxes out at 16 GB soldered as compared to the iMac's 128 GB of user-upgradeable RAM.

    Most people really liked M1 Macs and wanted to use Windows software for gaming and MacOS for editing but Apple Silicon Macs doesn’t Support Windows. If all macs have Apple Silicon chips, It’s a hard choice for those who really want Windows to record the gameplays and edit it through MacOS. As for them, I don’t recommend them buy the Apple Silicon Macs. It’s better to go for a High End Windows Desktops

    I believe Apple is going to release along side the new 24" and 32" iMac's with Apple Silicon, a one new 32" iMac with redesign like the m1's, but with Intel 11th gen with pcie 4.0, a radeon pro 6800, 6800XT and 6900XT variants, for the last Intel iMac. I believe that because they wanna prove that even with the latest parts from PC they can put in, the M1 iMac 32"still going to outperform it. But for the ones that need bootcamp and other things that still go better on intel yet, that will be the latest one Intel iMac.

    I think it will be some time until AS will be able to beat the GPU performance of even the last generation AMD 5700XT let alone the current crop of AMD/Nvidia GPUs. Probably not until an AS MacPro comes out next year.

    My 2008 iMac is dying. I want a larger than 24” screen but am afraid that the new larger display (the 30”) on the new iMac will be priced too high. Do you think they will have an entry level one that will be priced lower than let’s say around $3000? I really like the old display so that isn’t a problem. I feel the new 24” is too small. A friend suggested I get a Mac air and buy a large monitor with speakers and use my present keyboard. Any comments will be helpful. Thanks.

    The s21 ultra is a way better phone than the iPhone 12 pro Max in many ways.they are so far ahead of the iPhone that the next iPhone won't even have all of the features that the s21 ultra has now like 120 herts, adaptive refresh rate, 1,500 nits, 100 times zoom, 108 megapixel camera, 8K video, the smallest hole punch, on any phone, reverse wireless charging, recording from three cameras at the same time, single take mode and a macro camera. There are many more but I cannot remember them right now. When you see these features on the iPhone 14 do not think that Apple made these features because like usual they are just stealing the features from the last Samsung. Wach the video 5 ways that the Samsung s21 ultra destroyes the iphone 12 pro max. The next iphone will not have a chargeing port. Wireless charging takes twice as long to charge as wired charging wile using 74% more power and heat.

    I think iMac is not worth buying at all. In my country, you can literally buy a PC with rtx 3080 on Newegg or Amazon under $3000. The specs of the PC is much much better. The iMac just simply can't compete with the PC!
