Ok Linus, I gotta disagree with you heavily on the iMacs external power brick. I work in a repair shop and have to fix iMacs fairly regularly. The most common failures on iMacs are the old HDD’s, the GPU’s that older units run, and their power supplies. In previous videos I have watched you disassemble iMacs, and you have noted how the high voltage AC capacitors are dangerous. (I have been shocked by them before, it’s not fun) to access the PSU on iMacs you also need to remove the display, which can easily be broken as it is glass, and on some models you have to buy tape kits to put the thing back together properly! By moving the power supply outside of the iMac, it only benefits right to repair. By making the PSU an external unit, it is easily user replaceable, doesn’t require you to remove the delicate glass displays, and means you won’t have to go near those scary high voltage capacitors. If anything I think the external power brick is not something to scoff at, as it copy’s the status quo of other Windows All-In-One’s by having an external brick, but it also makes the device more user serviceable, and is better for right to repair! Otherwise, great video!!
also: the heat from the power brick doesn't affect the internals of the iMac. One of the reasons why laptops don't have built-in power bricks (apart form the additional weight/size)

My sister just bought one. Yeah, she could've got a M1 Mac mini, then shopped around for a screen, a keyboard, mouse, and some decent speakers... but she didn't want to do all of that. LITERALLY, one cable to plug the thing in, and started using the machine. The convenience of an all in one is something to factor in as well.
until you want to do a simple thing such as screenshotting. all the convenience of the hardware is worth nothing once you have to deal with the shitty OS.

@@ceddiexd it is not impossible, but not exactly convenient or intuitive. the trackpad is fine if you have very limited space. still, using mouse and kb is naturally faster. previous page? one click, no mouse movement needed. instead of moving your hand to the trackpad and doing gestures first (also trackpads are not exactly a mac-only thing). coding is not something average users do. and you need homebrew for stuff a linux system can do out of the box. so if you install 3rd party stuff to get linux functionality anyway .. you could go with wsl with windows just as well.

I think the redesign was a good call. 100% of people I know with the 21.5" iMac bought it between 2007 and 2011 and haven't cared to upgrade it since. It's a fantastic family machine for some iMovie, web, and photo organization and people who buy these aren't into tech enough to care. So they just never upgraded them.
The way parallel processing generally works, with diminishing returns the more cores are used, I think it makes sense that you have a less than 12.5% performance drop when going from 8 GPU cores to 7 GPU cores.
In my case, I am having an issue with my display going black due to static electricity and it is driving me up the wall. I will be replacing it with an iMac to make that problem go away while also getting a nice aesthetic and internal upgrade (I opted for more RAM and storage in the iMac).
I am on the same boat. I am deciding between a Mac Mini+monitor VS Imac. Comparing the 16GB, 512GB version of both, the Mac Mini goes for $1327 with the same acessories of the Imac (Mac Mini $1099 + magic mouse $79 + magic keyboard touch ID $149), the Imac goes for $1899 (with magic mouse and magic keyboard touch ID). The difference is $572. I searched a lot and I couldn't find a monitor at the same level as the Imac's monitor for that price. The Dell U2720Q UltraSharp 4K for example is $600. And the Imac has a camera and good speakers that I would have to buy separately. I wanted the Mac Mini+monitor because I don't like those happy colors of the Imac, but it seems to me they are a better deal. If anyone here have a recomendation of a Monitor as good as Imac´s for under $600, let me know

I have the 16GB RAM M1 Mac Mini, and I've been very impressed by Dolphin's Wii/GameCube performance... between that, Redream and OpenEmu I'm running games in high resolutions (in some cases with 4K texture packs) without the fans even starting up. It's surpassed my expectations. And Steam is getting much better too... I'm running the Batman Arkham Trilogy in 4K without any performance issues, along with games such as Planet Coaster and Two Point Hospital. To say the M1 isn't good for gaming, is 100% Intel's sour grapes. But I do agree, the Mac Mini is a far far better buy than the iMac... not only is it cheaper, but with the money you save you can get a 32" UHD monitor and a thunderbolt dock for additional storage and USB ports... and it was STILL cheaper than the 24" All In One after all the accessories.

@@Gilmore304 I got a Samsung personally. Their 28/32” UHD displays are decent price and they are dual HDMI input so can be used for Mac and TV if you wish to.
@R yeah it’s perfect for work, editing and mid range gaming. I’m a trainee teacher so more than good enough for office, teams, cloud etc. but then as I say all the gaming examples above also. And saves you $100’s in the process compared to an iMac.

From what I observed, in order to get a display that comes close to the iMacs display quality, it costs so much! To me, it just doesn’t really make sense to buy all these stuff separately cause it adds up quickly and it doesn’t look as cohesive as having everything in a same design language and works seamlessly. @@neobynature921 The speakers, not the iMac. They meant the speakers aren't as much of an ear-soar as you would expect, especially in comparison to other AIOs. I imagine they're fine if you had to resort to use them. As always, it's better to have a separate audio solution at least in an upgrade path if you care any.

I've been wanting a Mac Mini for quite some time, actually. I'm a Windows machine user, but I am curious about the Mac ecosystem, and it's good to get experience with other OSes just to say you know how to use them. Considering the generally rave reviews for the M1, I'll probably end up picking one up in future, when chip prices stabilize a bit. Maybe the next generation? Not an entry level model though. Like with this iMac, Apple has put some limitations on the lowest end Mac Mini that makes it a bit less palatable.
The thing is that the ram and storage limitations of the lower tier iMac already make it a no go for anyone that would take advantage of the better cooling. Apple knows this and decided to not waste money on fans that won’t ever be used. I do agree that they could have at least put a disclaimer at the bottom of the spec page. Can’t wait for the new 27in/iMac pro replacement.
Linus, my guy, please get better captions on your videos. FXAA becomes "ethics AA", cores become "course", and so many more. I appreciate that you guys have captions at all (it's a huge accessibility aid), but I'm sure there are better caption providers that don't cost much more.
@@JRC_ even if you don't, for your casual users that doesn't really care as long as it's good enough, a 24 inch 1080p monitor from LG is $120, a basic logitech m&k (mk120) is $20, and a webcam is around $30. Add a $30 headset for audio and you are looking at total of $200 for all of the above.
If I were buying a Mac I would go definitely go for the Mac Mini not only because of price but the freedom choosing a monitor and keyboard, especially the ergonomics on the keyboard matter a lot to me. A modularised computer also means that if one part module, say the screen is damaged, I can easily replace without having to lose the whole computer 🖥.
The writing has been honed nicely. I love seeing the progress a channel achieve over time. You can really notice and appreciate the work that has gone into making this video.

I think the extra core in the 8-core model puts out just the right amount of heat to saturate the thermal control system and throttle it. Whereas the 7-core model reduces the throttling and allows the 7 cores to run faster. Thus the slight discrepancy in benchmarks.
Soooo Linus, help me out here. How would you spec out a setup with a Mac mini without significantly compromising at the display and sound? I can’t find a decent 4K and soundbar while still ending up significantly below the iMacs price. And there simply is no other way to get Touch ID to the Mac mini. Yeah, you can have a MacOS setup for cheaper than the iMac. But let’s not pretend that it actually delivers the same in all aspects.

It is easy to recomend the mini and say "bring your own devices"... you should say... buy the Mini, buy the apple keyboard and trackpad, and XYZ screen (with the same quality) for xxxx$... Another thing nobody mentions is that this thing (as almost every other imac, except the first ones if I stand corrected) does NOT ALLOW hdmi IN... so if you live in a dorm or a tight spaced room, if you are looking to hook a PS5 into this to (re)use the screen... it does not work. Go with the mini+Screen.
100% correct, I had to cancel my order for the base model after I found out it didn't just exclude the 8 core, Touch ID & ethernet port.... but also the second fan and the heat thingie as well. The entire presentation made the 2 fans seem like every model featured that, but I had to go on the TH-cam (not even their own apple website!) to find these things out. I got the better model iMac but with 8GB cuz I'm a console gamer and only use imovie not final cut...but still Apple, be more clear with the thousand dollar products you are offering.
I use the magic mouse for editing in Final Cut Pro and the port on the bottom does not bother me at all because the battery lasts for weeks and charging it enough to last for days takes minutes. I don't see a reason for apple to change the port location.
I vacillated between the 24" iMac M1 8/8 and the Mac Mini. Two things drove me to buy the iMac; finding a display I could afford that would rival the 4.5K Retina display and the lack of cable clutter inherent with the mini. As far as ports go I added the color matching Minisopuru USB hub (external NVMe SSD, 2 USB A, 2 USB 3.2 A/C & TF & SD card slots)
If the low-end iMac's performance is being throttled by a substandard cooling system, the only reasonable thing to do is mod it with water-cooling, so it can achieve its true potential. Come on Linus, you know you want to!
So now when the power cable breaks, instead of running quickly to any kind of store next door, I have to get a whole new power adapter? The same goes for when the network cable inside stops working. Not to count the hours or days I am missing when that happens.
Would have been too difficult to invent USB type C power input I guess. /s I thought these things (M1 at max spec) only pulled 35w of power? 5A USB Type-c cable can carry 100w max. Obviously it's their obsession with thin; if they made it a bit more chubby they could have put the power conversion hardware inside and included a built in NIC.

I've been wanting a Mac Mini for quite some time, actually. I'm a Windows machine user, but I am curious about the Mac ecosystem, and it's good to get experience with other OSes just to say you know how to use them.
Considering the generally rave reviews for the M1, I'll probably end up picking one up in future, when chip prices stabilize a bit. Maybe the next generation? Not an entry level model though. Like with this iMac, Apple has put some limitations on the lowest end Mac Mini that makes it a bit less palatable.

The thing is that the ram and storage limitations of the lower tier iMac already make it a no go for anyone that would take advantage of the better cooling. Apple knows this and decided to not waste money on fans that won’t ever be used. I do agree that they could have at least put a disclaimer at the bottom of the spec page. Can’t wait for the new 27in/iMac pro replacement.

Linus, my guy, please get better captions on your videos. FXAA becomes "ethics AA", cores become "course", and so many more. I appreciate that you guys have captions at all (it's a huge accessibility aid), but I'm sure there are better caption providers that don't cost much more.

@@JRC_ even if you don't, for your casual users that doesn't really care as long as it's good enough, a 24 inch 1080p monitor from LG is $120, a basic logitech m&k (mk120) is $20, and a webcam is around $30. Add a $30 headset for audio and you are looking at total of $200 for all of the above.

If I were buying a Mac I would go definitely go for the Mac Mini not only because of price but the freedom choosing a monitor and keyboard, especially the ergonomics on the keyboard matter a lot to me. A modularised computer also means that if one part module, say the screen is damaged, I can easily replace without having to lose the whole computer 🖥.
That conclusion made me rewatch the whole video just to see if there’s any more easter eggs

Microsoft has a wireless keyboard with a fingerprint reader on it now, it's pretty handy, glad the mac is getting it now.

@@SunnyAustria it's pretty good, but I guess I mispoke. The reader on the Microsoft keyboard is compatible with Windows Hello so can be used with all the authentication attached to that process. I must admit, the little ecosystem apple has carved out is quite nice.

VST Synths and other things that costs about 12k Euros is now worthless.... I have Windows Hello on my Laptop for work and its very unstable but mybe its the Hardware. ( HP Elitebook 1030G3 )

I think the extra core in the 8-core model puts out just the right amount of heat to saturate the thermal control system and throttle it. Whereas the 7-core model reduces the throttling and allows the 7 cores to run faster. Thus the slight discrepancy in benchmarks.

Soooo Linus, help me out here. How would you spec out a setup with a Mac mini without significantly compromising at the display and sound? I can’t find a decent 4K and soundbar while still ending up significantly below the iMacs price.
And there simply is no other way to get Touch ID to the Mac mini.
Yeah, you can have a MacOS setup for cheaper than the iMac. But let’s not pretend that it actually delivers the same in all aspects.

It is easy to recomend the mini and say "bring your own devices"... you should say... buy the Mini, buy the apple keyboard and trackpad, and XYZ screen (with the same quality) for xxxx$...
Another thing nobody mentions is that this thing (as almost every other imac, except the first ones if I stand corrected) does NOT ALLOW hdmi IN... so if you live in a dorm or a tight spaced room, if you are looking to hook a PS5 into this to (re)use the screen... it does not work. Go with the mini+Screen.

100% correct, I had to cancel my order for the base model after I found out it didn't just exclude the 8 core, Touch ID & ethernet port.... but also the second fan and the heat thingie as well. The entire presentation made the 2 fans seem like every model featured that, but I had to go on the TH-cam (not even their own apple website!) to find these things out. I got the better model iMac but with 8GB cuz I'm a console gamer and only use imovie not final cut...but still Apple, be more clear with the thousand dollar products you are offering.

I use the magic mouse for editing in Final Cut Pro and the port on the bottom does not bother me at all because the battery lasts for weeks and charging it enough to last for days takes minutes. I don't see a reason for apple to change the port location.

I vacillated between the 24" iMac M1 8/8 and the Mac Mini. Two things drove me to buy the iMac; finding a display I could afford that would rival the 4.5K Retina display and the lack of cable clutter inherent with the mini. As far as ports go I added the color matching Minisopuru USB hub (external NVMe SSD, 2 USB A, 2 USB 3.2 A/C & TF & SD card slots)

Would have been too difficult to invent USB type C power input I guess. /s I thought these things (M1 at max spec) only pulled 35w of power? 5A USB Type-c cable can carry 100w max. Obviously it's their obsession with thin; if they made it a bit more chubby they could have put the power conversion hardware inside and included a built in NIC.
