I've been feeling drawn back to historical fiction after taking a break for a few months, so this was interesting to watch!

Don't unhaul the Ken Follet books!!! They are long but believe me, you won't want them to end. So worth it!!!

I loved seeing your thought process on reorganizing your shelves. I also like to separate my books read vs unread.

Your historical fiction shelves are very similar to mine. It's my favorite genre to read. We definitely have the same taste in books which is why I always enjoy watching you! Can't wait to hear your thoughts on your TBR as you read them.

The Underground Railroad is one of the most impactful books I've ever read - I hope you reconsider! It's an interesting mix of history and magical realism that puts quite a spin on the period of time it portrays. Not going to lie though - it is definitely tough in places but oh so worth it in my opinion. Libertie is on my TBR for November - I don't know much about it other than the broad strokes so I'll see how it goes!

I decided to keep The Underground Railroad, you and a number of others have convinced me :)

One Thousand White Women was very good. I think you would enjoy. It was not a title or premise that I thought I would like either. The Mary Queen of Scots is the only Margaret George book that I have not been able to get into. Her other books are some of my favorites. I currently have the two Nero books and am looking forward to them. If you have not read her books, you are missing out.

I love videos like this.... you'll be so happy when you've got your shelves how you want them to be.
Can't wait to see the next videos.
I say if you can get the "maybe books" at the library, then unhaul them and if you get in the mood for that author you can read it from there.
Pillars of the Earth!!!!! It's so good! But definitely not for everyone. I enjoyed the audio. (Skipping the assault)
Once Upon a River is great on audio if you want to reread from the library

I don’t usually like Philippa Gregory but I did like the Tidelands. Sarah’s Key is one of the saddest books I have ever read, it’s really stayed with me. And Rebecca is fantastic, Rebecca is the dead wife, the protagonist isn’t named.

    Hi Angie,
Thank you for another great video! I really enjoyed the variety of books up for consideration (to keep or not to keep...that is the question). Flight of the Sparrow was fantastic and I look forward to your thoughts on it when you do read it. I would encourage you to give Colson Whitehead's Underground Railroad a second chance of being read. It was a really interesting take on the UR (there is a functioning train that transports one of the main characters). I liked it so much that I then read another one of his books, The Nickel Boys. That one really blew me away...so, so very good and the twist at the end made my jaw drop.
    Happy reading!

I find your comments on Kristen Harmel book interesting. I started reading The Forest of Vanishing Stars in July, and set it aside about halfway through. I don't feel like going back to it, even though I think a lot of people reallly liked it. There is something in the characterization that I didn't like and some elements around choices and decisions made that didn't quite ring true. But the story line was interesting. So it's similar to what I hear you saying about the other book. I think I'm feeling more certain about unhauling it now.

I love historical fiction... but Sarah's Key -- I wanted to throw that one up against the wall. I also had to DNF Fly Away (sequel to Firefly Lane). It was just awful, IMHO. I've read and loved a lot of the others your showed. 🙂 Loved Pillars of the Earth, but haven't read the sequel or prequel - yet. Dragonfly by Leila Meacham was EXCELLENT! The Queen's Secret is all about "the Queen Mother", Queen Elizabeth's mother (also named Elizabeth). It was very good, but then I'm a bit of an anglophile.

I personally wouldn’t recommend The Flight of the Sparrow. The opening scenes are unnecessarily graphic and violent, and in general I don’t think we need more books exploring Indigenous Peoples from the perspective of white people. The Indigenous characters aren’t fully three dimensional or nuanced, their struggles aren’t fully explored or explained. The white main character spends a few weeks with a tribe and declares that she “became native” which is pretty offensive.

I liked the kommandants girl by Pam jenoff - not read the other two you have by her. She can be one of those author who has a good book and not. I can recommend a better one - the clematis tree and sequel by Ann widdicombe- if u can get those

Warning: Sarah's Key was not good. The present day timeline was terrible (but that's just me, I guess). I also decided that Pam Jenoff wasn't for me based on reading two of her books: Lost Girls of Paris and Orphan Train. I just didn't enjoy them enough to want to read more from her.
