    I got home one night after working 2nd shift, and our townhouse smelled, and there was smoke; but I looked through our entire house twice and found nothing. I considered going to bed, but called my husband at work, who said call the fire department, he said it was better to call and be wrong. I called, and it turned out that the townhouse next door had a kitchen fire, and the lady was asleep. Long story short, she was grateful, and we became friends until her passing 2 years ago. It's always better to be safe than sorry.

      I was at a friends house on her back porch and I smelled propane. I knew they had a tank. She couldn’t smell it until we went right near the tank but I smelled it 20 feet away. They called the company and they came right out. Who knows what might’ve happened.

    I'm a person who calls. One time after midnight, there was crazy couple fighting across the hwy, I went outside and my neighbor was out and said he had called the police to which I replied "me too" ... fight over. Another time I came home and smelled smoke but found nothing. Called the fire dept, they came out checked my house, found nothing, even got in the attic! A neighbor from the next street over came to me and asked if I was smelling smoke as about 5 homes on the other street had been smelling smoke since 3pm (now 6pm). I told the fire chief and he RAN to the other homes as he pointed to me and yelled "your house is okay". The chief came back to my house and said my call saved those 5 other houses from burning down. It ended up a transformer that those 5, plus my 1 house was severly overcharging. I don't remember the exact details, but it was approx 5 times the safe level. That transformer had been hit by lightening twice in the few short years I lived in the house (FL). It's a phone call. Better safe than sorry, so if you think you should call.. CALL! Thanks for yet another great video Cas!! Keep being AWESOME!!❤

    I got one. I was traveling home from work late at night on some back country roads on a really foggy night . I was on the phone with my husband and I saw blue lights out of nowhere. Told my hubby I was going to pull off and ask the officer if we could go to the gas station about 5 miles away. Pulled over just past the crossroads...the lights were gone..no cop. Got back on the road, went about a mile and bam! Blue lights again. Called hubby, pulled over just passed a turn off. Lights disappeared again. I get back on the road turn on our street and bam! Blue lights again hubby states " you're only a half mile away. Just come home. I'll meet you in the yard.". So I turn on my flashers to signal that I was aware the cop was behind me and slowly made my way home. Pull in and see my husband laughing as he approaches the back of our van. He had hung my son's "police" light up shoes on the back of the seat . The shoes were pulling me over.

    I woke up one night and smelled something in the bedroom over a decade ago. I thought I smelled something burning but it was really hard to say. I did call the fire dept. And let me tell you having these guys all suited up come in my cluttered bedroom was awful! BUT there was actually an electrical fire starting in our ceiling in the wiring with the ceiling fan. I'm really glad I called.

  • @stellacalder5023

    "Should you call in a stink?" Yes. My reasoning: I live near an intersection that has a weirdly high number of car accidents and I have a window that gives me a direct view. I called the first few times I saw an accident and was told "you're the second/third/fourth person to call, we're already handling it." A few months ago, I saw an accident and questioned whether I should call it in because "other people probably already called." I ended up deciding I'd rather be annoying than let someone die because I was too scared of being annoying, so I called.
    That time, both drivers were severely injured and unconscious and I guess I was the only one awake at 3 am to see it happen, so nobody had called yet. Now I call every time unless I can see that everyone's walking around and nobody's panicking. I just can't risk being the one person who could have prevented something awful but was too scared of potential future embarrassment to save lives.

    • @bookworm1956
      @bookworm1956 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +7

      I live just next to a street corner (in town) where a lot of accidents used to happen because of bad layout. I called in quite a few of them to emergency services, including some where I was the only one calling and people were injured and/or in shock.
      Now the town has changed the layout and blocked off the left turn in one direction, and we haven't had any accidents since. Apparently they look at accident statistics and try to deal with hot spots. Which made me wonder why I never thought about signalling it as a problem.
      Maybe you could write to your town planning office and signal the issue, asking them if they are aware and what they plan on doing about it? Signalling an accident is the right thing to do in the moment, but signalling a systemic problem in one spot might be more efficient and save lives in the long run. If they don't have a proactive planning office. Mine took about 20 years to notice and fix the problem since the last overhaul of that crossroad.

    • @stellacalder5023
      @stellacalder5023 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

      @@bookworm1956 it’s an intersection of two 25 mph one-way streets, so the city is confused about what’s going on at that one specifically. I’m not, as a homeowner near that corner: the retaining walls that were “grandfathered in” are taller and closer to the street than the new retaining walls, and one of those older walls is on that corner. You can’t see around the corner until you’re in the street, but people just start blindly turning anyway and cars on the other street tend to run the light because it’s the last red light before multiple elementary and middle schools. I’ve been honked at so many times for refusing to turn right on red there.
      The good thing is the city is already planning to redo that whole street next summer and as part of that, is considering a “no right on red” sign, of which I’m in full support. Unfortunately, our city doesn’t enforce most traffic laws (the police department has formally announced this to us 🙄) so it’s doubtful the sign would make much of a difference.

    • @bookworm1956
      @bookworm1956 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      @@stellacalder5023 Ah, that makes sense. If the walls are non-negotiable, you could suggest a convex mirror placed opposite the corner, so both sides can see into the other street. It's a solution often used here in Europe in historic town centres with streets that are meant to be approached at a gentle horse's trot at best, if not on foot. If the front of your car is longer than your cup of coffee, you cannot see around the corner to safely proceed. So it's either mirrors, or (even better in my opinion) pedestrian zones by default.

    Your funny smell story made me think about one my son, who is a firefighter, told me. They were called out by people who “smelled gas.” The people who were new residents, from a foreign country, said they could smell it outside and in their house. The dispatcher told them to get everyone out of the house. The family complied and then secured their dogs in their car so they wouldn’t be frightened by the fire trucks and run away. Turns out the dogs had crawled under the porch and were sprayed by a skunk. They then came into the house. Now the skunky dogs are in the family car!! It was hard for the firefighters not to laugh hysterically while breaking the news to the family. Guess they now knows what a skunk smells like.

    Cass I am so eternally grateful to you and your channel! About a year ago I watched a video where you put your clothes into boxes amongst some other tips. I have ADHD and struggle with object permanence (if I can’t see it I don’t have it!) so all my clothes would be on the floor constantly so I could see what I had. Then I’d get overwhelmed at the task of putting them back or they’d be dirty because they’d touched the floor. It was a nightmare. I put my clothes into clear boxes, one for tops, one for bottoms, etc. Now I can see what I’ve got and just take out one box at a time rather than the whole wardrobe. I figured like most things it wouldn’t stick and I’d be back to my old habits but it’s been over 10 months and not a single item of clothing has touched the floor🥹🥹 However small that might seem it has literally changed my life. Sending so much love to you and yours❤❤

    13:23 I relate to not knowing what a gas leak smells like. I had a bad smell in my kitchen and I searched around for something smelly in my trash can, refrigerator, and microwave. Nothing. So I lit a fragrant candle to make the house smell better. Meanwhile my cousin stops by and immediately recognizes the smell as gas. It really depends on the person! I have a friend who sees results after barely one week; for me it takes at least two months. And I'm not even talking about weight loss, because I've never been successful at losing weight through exercising despite having gone through periods of intense training in my life - I'm talking about muscle tone, increased cardio ability, and my body "craving" the exercise. So even if you're not seeing results after 2 weeks, don't give up!

I completed the challenge and then challenged myself to do pencil drawings everyday for a year. I still do them, I keep a small sketch pad in my purse, so wherever I go I can draw. I have drawings from the Dr’s office, the people at McDonald’s, the ER waiting room (with my grandson), flowers, ideas from Pinterest, etc. I draw every chance I get. My next challenge was to paint (watercolor) everyday. I do these things everyday without fail, gratifying and validating.

I phoned Maintenance and they had someone inspect the building. They could not find anything. I was so embarrassed. Fast Forward..... a few months later Maintenance called. They informed me that four floors below ours BC Hydro (I live in BC Canada) was preparing sniff cards to send out to customers to scratch so they would know what gas smells like. OMG Cass, I literally just called my local power/gas company this last week for a gas smell too, & it ended up being either a dead animal or somebody's nasty garbage. However, when the technician guy came out, he said he smelled the smell too, & it was better to be safer than sorry. Our smell wasn't there consistently, rather, it kept wafting kinda there & gone.
    He ckd everyone's gas lines in the neighborhood & after finding nothing, came back & let me know we were clear & what he thought it was. However, he thanked me for calling, bc had it been a leak & nobody reported it, it would've been devastating...

    Addressing only your last situation rn: You absolutely did the right thing, assuming your community has 24/7 police coverage. As a civilian who worked mids for 15 years, you call the folks on duty first, and go from there. Set aside the potential embarrassment issue, you had a valid concern, you attempted to get someone out to check it out, you explained your (logical) decision to alert police rather than fire. Personally, I think anyone from your dept hearing the playback will understand what happened, and perhaps even come to the same conclusion I did: calling out fire without assessing the scene first was a d*ck move.

    Cas - Hope this makes you feel better. There was a storm and a electrical wire came down in the middle of the night right across the street. The powers that be came to investigate and take care of the situation. I could hear a buzzing electrical sound behind my house and ran out to tell them that I thought there was another wire down behind my house. I was so scared. I dragged them back there ( being hysterical, I might add). It was a neighbor's huge BUG ZAPPER! I was mortified. LOL. I hope you feel better to know there is a kindred spirit in Michigan. Have a great day. Blessings - Judith

    You've been doing excellent at the workouts. I remember you said you have a trainer now.
    I was at our local fire department a few weeks ago and was talking to them about the equipment. Before you talked about joining your department I never REALLY grasped the weight of everything. Like the pounds of equipment and gear. It's crazy actually. And then he told me how old homes, like mine (over 100 years old) are a total loss is about a half hour. But new construction is 8 minutes. EIGHT minutes. Some people can't even get out the door with their kids to get in the car in 8 minutes.
    It made me think of two things. First you are SO amazing for even trying to be a fire fighter. Second this knowledge is just one more reason to be organized. To know where the purse, wallet, car keys, dog leashes etc, to be able get out quickly.
    Oh and I would have called too. 😊

    Hey Cass! Let me tell you my gas story... this happened earlier this year, so the house across the street from me caught on fire early one morning... no one was there which was good. However about 3-4 days after the fire, the owner had the rest of the house torn down. The day he had it torn down I was out and about running errands and I saw them tearing the house down. I came back home for a min then left again. Ok so when I came home that last time it was at night, soon as I opened my car door all I smelled was natural gas. I was like what in the world, so I checked my mailbox before going in the house and by the time I made it to my mailbox (20 steps away), I had a terrible headache. Soon as I got into the house, I started calling my neighbors and none of them smell the gas, so I sat there and debated if I should call the gas company and I was like if I don't call then I might wake up dead in the morning along with my neighbors (because of the fumes). So I called the gas company and they came out and he didn't even smell it....UNTIL... he went down to the property where the house was... then he came back to me and rung the door bell and said maam, I just wanted to let you know that your nose was not wrong, there was a pipe about 1 foot off the ground and he said when he walked over there he could hear the gas flowing out of that pipe. So he had to call back up and they brought all of their big machines and they had the water company to come out to mark where their pipes were because they had to dig. Anyway the gas company took about 4 hours to get everything fixed up, but I am glad that I did call. I am still surprised that even the neighbor that stays directly across the street from that house didn't smell anything... oh so when you have a natural gas leak, call the gas company. I have their emergency number on my favorite list in my cell.

    I once smelled something burned/smoke... I live in a flat, so my then live-in boyfriend and I searched everything... Found nothing. But it was strongest next to the door so I checked outside, then sniffed my way around the hallway, until I could point to the flat the smell was coming from. We rang, and surely enough they opened and said they had burned their dinner on the stove about an hour earlier.
    I swear, if nobody would have opened I would have called...
    Our public transportation provider here in Vienna once ran an ad campaign with various scenarios, showing how to operate all the emergency stop buttons, call for help etc, and they ended every spot with "if in doubt, it's an emergency" ("Im Zweifelsfall ist es ein Notfall") - One of the best campaigns ever.

    I started putting lotion on, head to toe, after my showers about 3 years ago when I had a really bad eczema flare. At first I was so annoyed that I had to do it and felt like it took so much time. BUT after a few weeks, I noticed not only did my skin start to heal, so did my self image. I guess the act of caring for each area of my body, even the ones I used to not like, forced me to start appreciating them. I’m now more familiar with my physical self and feel far more comfortable with who I am. Highly recommend.

    Yay Cas! Yes! Taking care of yourself is so important! In my experience, one of the best pathways to figuring out self love by being your own best friend. Other ideas: Light some incense and meditate for 10 minutes (or just sit quietly and practice breathing calmly if your mind is racing). Give yourself a brief foot massage with an essential oil you like. You can get the Mr. Pumice callus removers and just scrub your feet for a few minutes each time you shower. Eventually you get rid of those sandpaper feet XD. Buy yourself flowers when you go grocery shopping (in addition to or instead of junk food if you're so inclined) and put them somewhere you'll see them a lot during the week. Steal a quiet moment to eat breakfast/have tea or coffee on your patio when the weather is beautiful. Just find those little moments to show yourself you care!

    Decluttering My story. I got home around 10pm to an empty house. This was several years ago. A few minutes after going to bed. I heard a crashing sound. Our property was fenced in and my cousin’s son in law was working. His wife and kids were sleeping. The property behind us had a few small businesses. One had been vandalized recently. The sound of breaking wood happened again so I called 911 and explained the situation. She told me to make sure everything was locked (I did) and call back if it happened again. When I called back, she asked if I was elderly. I told her I was in my 70s. She sent an officer. While he was there, it happened again. He quickly found the source of the sound. It was the ice maker. I was totally embarrassed!

    I called the fire department when I smelled something awful. I noticed it came from a neighbor's broken window and there was smoke coming out. I had to direct the fire truck to the right area of the apartment complex and let them in the gate (no idea why they needed my help with that). It turns out that the resident had been cooking, needed to leave for a few hours and thought they had turned off the stove(it's electric), however they actually turned the heat up all the way accidentally. I watched the firefighters break down the front door and a moment later they threw the pot that had been burning on the stove out the front door. The water had evaporated and the smell was caused by some meat. Positively awful smell. You definitely did the right thing by calling!

Finally I found a program on TH-cam, downloaded the app and committed to the $4.95 monthly subscription and I’ve been rocking it. At first I procrastinated on when I would do it and finally committed to doing it very first thing in the morning, getting my daughter out the door to school and then the walk. Today ended the second full week and it’s the perfect plan for me. You’re the best Cas, thanks for your videos.

    I'm relearning Spanish. I have an 81-day streak going because it's only 10-15 minutes a day. I'm loving it. BTW I think you're an amazingly successful human being- you've written a book, have a successful business and TH-cam channel, run a family and are in firefighting training with the last name that sounds like "arson"- hilarious! You're pretty dang accomplished in my book!

    I kept smelling natural gas around a corner of our house near the garage. My husband couldn't smell it but I finally listened to that small voice that said "call the gas company". Well, at first the gas company guy didn't pick anything up in our garage or from the gas water heater but when I told him where I was smelling it, his meter picked up a 80% saturation amount. They declared it an emergency and for the next 24 hrs they pumped gas out from under our house! They said that was the scariest case in 40 years. If I had lit a match or anything our house would have exploded. They joked and asked if I could go with them on calls. My nose worked extremely well.

      Good for you! When my parents moved to a brand new condo building I could smell gas in the elevator. Every time I went over I told them, and they told management, and management claimed they couldn't find anything. I kept insisting there was a leak somewhere, because I smelled it in the elevator every time I visited. Eventually the gas company found a leak in the meters in the underground garage and fixed it. You really have to be persistent about those smells sometimes!

    Hi Cas, thanks for the funny story - it made my day! It reminds me of when someone stole the Ford badge from the front of our Ford Galaxy. I called the police that someone had stolen our license plate - I tried to explain that it was not a license plate, but just a car license plate... but the police simply understood it differently and sent a patrol of 2 officers to us. I could see on their faces how they wanted to laugh when they found out it was only a Ford brand. In the end, they endured it and wrote down the log and the thefts with icy calmness. They pointed out that according to our law it is only a misdemeanor and the case will probably be dismissed. And then they left. They never found the sign - we, on the other hand, eventually found the same sign in the parking lot by our car, so we stuck it there... S.😆
