Painterly technique really connects with me, as it seems to focus more of feeling than perfection. I never really understood the value of a color exercise, but I do now! More videos about your thoughts and decision making when creating Painterly feeling color studies!
This colour wheel exercise looks like fun I’m gonna have to try it. I’ve already done the greyscale that I keep nearby for my oil painting sessions. Also, we’re gonna need a room tour because it looks so cosy and I couldn’t stop trying to check it out 💞🌸
Thanks for the great exercise to try out. I'm restarting my journey with art after a 10 year gap (back to basics for me), so I look forward to seeing more of your quailty videos along the way.
I started with watercolour and learnt that way, which kind of made switching to acrylic and gouache much harder because white was involved. I think it could've been so much simpler if I'd started out like this 🥰
Thank you for these video. I studied Visual arts a long time a go but life took me on another path. Now 36 years later I love seeing your videos and remembering all these techniques makes so happy and I starting to create again (well trying at least)
I love your color studies. I wish you made more study videos. I am fond of your painting style and would love to watch your painting videos for the rest of my life. You always inspire me. Much love from India.❤
As a self-taught artist, I appreciate these studies. Sometimes I feel internal pressure to create perfection. I'm not trying for a side hussle or career change, I just enjoy experimenting. These excercises will help me get better. I still use your drawing one weekly.
I learned a really cool tip once: have 2 cups of water. One for warm and one for cool tones. So if you don’t clean your brush very well, it won’t be as muddy.
The beautiful corner next to BLICK Arts store in Pasadena! Recognized it right away! Thank you for this tutorial, I’ve recently started practicing in my sketch book more and your color theory practice was so helpful!! Looking forward to more helpful tips from you and you’re such an amazing artist! Much love! 🌹🌹
Hullo Jess, I am truly grateful for you and your videos! You are an amazing artist and such an incredible instructor too! I was taught to do a color/value studies before starting a gouache project! Working with colors the clients would be insistent on having in the picture. It was not always an easy task either! I am willing to bet that you would excel at this task too! I was introduced to gouache after years of working in watercolor. I am very interested in the tan paper, you and Sarah Burns both have a wonderful eye for details and colors that are just popping off the page. I just want to say thank you for showing everyone just how to get going! Truly a beautiful exercise and I really admire your finished result!
When I want to practice color studies I go to the hardware store and get paint chips. I then try to match them exactly, so that when you paint directly on the chip you can't see the difference. This is surprisingly hard, but I learn so much from it.
so... for anyone else who is a little precious abt paint... ii did this (rewinding as necessary...) w/ craft acrylic paints and am flat matte happy with the results... on composition paper no less....now ii will practice w/better papers and paints...and... the cheap stuff is perfect collage fodder...ty!! p.s.... ii double sided taped palette paper to my desk for mixing, & it cleans up with a wet paper towel...
I'm really found of your colour studies and limited palets videos. Thanks a lot for all your sharings ! I would be very glad if you tried the 3 paintings in different limited colours range as you've mentionned in this video.
I studied arch but minored in fine art. The first semester foundation course we learned at my college was exactly this. My prof was a well known design commercial artist in the 80s and she said all you need are the primaries to create the entire color wheel. This exercise was similar, but we did a lot of swatches. Values using black and white along with the color wheel was the second semester phase but that's another topic. Great video. I think a lot of prospective artists need to know more of this.
Thank you ❤❤❤ playing with colors is really so calming for me ^^ i often end back on some variation of the zorn palette (i take Windsor and newton indigo in place of the black/payne's grey), but playing with primaries and some variations of it is really helpful too ❤
Wishing you a Happy New Years Jess. Looking forward to the great upcoming content that you'l bring to us this year. Would be fun for more exercises to practice on like this one in the future.
I've been waiting for another one of your videos! Love the painting you created and the video was super informative, really cool! Thanks for the video!
the psychology of color I once said when I got out of college I would make a painting of purple clouds as a symbol of my new life lavender is more than a smell or color to me it is a symbol of transcending limitation and transforming your life into something incredible like outside of the box implies being aware of your limitations and refusing to let them contain you
Would be interesting to see you paint a CMY(k) color wheel along side, since red+blue makes fairly muddy purples and yellow+blue makes pretty dull greens. Magenta+cyan makes more vibrant purples and Yellow+cyan makes cleaner greens. CMY is pigment mixing wheel versus RYB, a variation of the visible light spectrum.
literally using just 3 primary colors (4 actually including white) will enhance your color mixing skills.. I am doing this for many years now. But i am thinking now to use ready made color pallette to speed up the process 😂
Hello Jess! This video was delightful, positive, well edited and informative! Thank you for sharing with us 🙂 What surface did you use to mix your acrylic gouache and how will you clean it off? Thanks 🙏🏽
How would you modify this practice for watercolors, I wonder? Since we don’t really want to add white and make the end result opaque and all, plus there’s mass tone vs a diluted color to consider 👀
LOVELY TO SEE YOU JESS, I ENJOYED THE COLOUR WHEEL VERY INTERESTING I WILL TRY IT OUT TOO., YOUR PAINTING WAS LOVELY. HOPE MATILDA YOUR CAT IS GOOD HAVEN'T SEEN HER FOR A WHILE. CHEERS BYE MARIA LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR NEXT VIDEO.
amazing work! I'm a little confused with your grascale challenge. you mention that it helps us learn value range but how do we then apply that grayscale swatch chart to our color work? thanks!

YES!!! AWESOME! THANKS!
Yes, Yes, YES to more color palette testing! Thanks Jess👍😉
I'm so glad you liked it! Next video will be one as well :)
When you zoomed out I didn't realize it was going to be that small. You are very good at the illusion of detail in a small space.
Thank you!

Thanks! I love painting!!!
I’m taking a color theory class right now. I can’t wait to use the 3 primary colors to make my own palettes. I have done a gray scale.
It's so much fun to experiment!thanks!
Really useful, thank you - great painting. Fowkes is an amazing artist isn’t he? His observation of colour and light is so good.
Absolutely excellent!!
Beautiful colour wheel and colour mixing exercise with primary colours!

Glad you enjoyed it! It’s a tin palette! I just. Soak it in water and it comes right off. But I do recommend a stay wet palette
Yay another video 🤩🤩
Yay!

I was there in old town this afternoon buying brushes :) What made you decide to use the very saturated yellow? I love it!
Awesome! thank you
You're welcome!

Jess when will we see footage from your art retreat? 😊
Soon soon it’s coming. It’s a very complex edit :) thanks for the patience
Is drying time of acryl gouache shorter than acrylic?
Relatively the same but it does very quick
Maybe my coloring skills will finally level up! 😂
Thanks for coming!!
@artofjesskarp one of my top favorite artists to watch!
Video was good but I’m wanting for another sketchbook start
Yay

And this is the mistake we beginners make when we don't study colors. 😅😅
Thanks for watching
