"It's a Tiger Shark"
"A whaaaaaaaaat?"
😂
he was a real islander too( marthas vineyard)
I read somewhere that Dick Young, who played that character, was never able to escape that line from the movie. Everywhere he went someone would recognize him and say "A whaaaaat?" 😉
The fact that Robert Shaw didn't even recieve an Oscar nomination for his role as Quint, was one of the biggest mistakes in the history of the Academy Awards.
Totally agree
Great character actor. The films I remember best were his portrayals in "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three" (1974), "The Sting" (1973) and "From Russia With Love"(1963).
Best Actor ·Jack Nicholson: 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'
Best Actress · Louise Fletcher: 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'
Is this one of the greatest movies of all time? Let us know down below.
It’s definitely up there for me, great choice for this week guys
Guys, Jaws scared EVERYBODY. People were afraid to water their grass.
The purpose of the barrels wasn’t tracking..it was to drag on the shark, eventually to hook them and secure it to the boat..
@@DrunkDadsWatch JAWS was the very 1st summer block-buster ever. Won multiple academy awards. Was inspired by real life events, in 1916. The book was even much better. By Peter Benchley. Music was done by multiple academy award winning composer, Mr. JOHN WILLIAMS.
I was eleven when this came out. The first time we tried to see it the line was down the street and around the block. We just went home. A couple days later we tried again. We got there early. They sold out before we got within a hundred feet the door. The third time we got in. The whole theater was screaming and cheering. I was so freaked out that night that I was afraid to sit on the toilet 😂 cause it had water in it!
My number 1 favorite movie, just perfect. The cast the shark the setting, everything is on point.
FYI. The dead tiger shark was real. Quint's speech about the U S S INDIANAPOLIS, was based on an actual WW2 event, in 1945. My sister snuck me in to see JAWS, in 1975, when I was 10 years old. It had a profound impact on my life.
Oh I can believe it, I got to see it in theaters a year ago and even thought I had seen it before it was amazing-Rick
Me to !! I was 10 as well and then I couldn’t sleep for a year because of the music lol 😂
1. Jaws was the first "Summer Blockbuster".
2. Boy Scouts don't need to do the mile swim to get their merit badge. It's an accomplishment all its own.
3. Lee Fierro/Mrs. Kentner actually slapped Roy Scheider. It took 17 takes. Once was so hard it knocked his glasses off.
4. The jump scare at Ben Gardner's boat was put in on purpose by Spielberg because they were having problems with the shark "Bruce" and his appearance was delayed, and the movie needed something earlier. Works every time.🤣 🤣
5. IRL Dreyfuss and Shaw didn't get along, so Spielberg used the animosity to fuel their feud onscreen.
6. The boy that said, "He made me do it' is now the Police Chief of the town where this movie was filmed.
7. Hooper was wrong. The fish that hit the line was "our fish".
8. To me the best scene framing work was the pullback to the vandalized Welcome sign.
9. Goof: An animal that large couldn't hit the side of the boat as rapidly as it did UNDER WATER.
10. I suspect Quint's story about the Indy gave him PTSD flashbacks and contributed to his behavior after he told the Indianapolis story. It' personal.
11. I was in the Navy, and we were instructed to go for the eyes when confronting a shark.
12. Aside from the pool used in the Ben Gardner boat scenes, all of the shipboard scenes were filmed entirely at sea,
13. In the book not only does Hooper die but he was also having an affair with Mrs. Brody.
14. JAWS II is the only other one worth watching. It revolves around the Brody kids and their friends. Including the mayor's son.
15 The third one was so bad that Scheider read the script and said NO.
I agree about Jaws 2, totally worth watching, but skip the other two.
The guy on the left didnt seem at all affected by Gardners head.
I’m mom told me this was the first movie that my parents saw on there first date 😎
Oh I'm so happy you guys did this, A Classic!!!!
This movie still scares the hell outta me, amazing reaction one of the best I’ve seen for this movie. Keep up the good work
The reporter on the beach was Peter Benchley, who wrote JAWS.
The running joke, back then, was:
How do you know that first girl, killed, had dandruff?
A: Because they found her Head & Shoulders on the beach
😂 was a riot back in the day
I’m in love with that joke
What did Vidal Sassoon say to an ex: Wash and go.
Yes!!!!!!!!!
This is my favorite horror movie because this shit could actually happen, great reaction Rick and Billy. Where’s return of the Jedi lol
It’s coming we promise
@@Slickmovies this classic film was inspired by actual shark attacks, in 1916. The Mattawan shark attacks & the New Jersey Beach attacks of same year. Most likely 2 different species of sharks. A Bull & Great White.
I lived in a small town in Michigan when Jaws came out, and we waited almost two years for it to finally arrive in our little movie theater. Even here, the line for every show went around the block, and every show sold out for five days. It was the biggest event our town had seen since the first stop light went in a few years earlier! The birth of the summer blockbuster. 😊
The same in the midland area theater! Don't know which one at the time scared me the most, exorcist scared me too lol! Peace from Northern Michigan!
The first 40 min. were character development. Without it, you wouldn't care who lives or dies.
@redpine8665 Absolutely!
Do Jaws 2 I know it’s not as good but I still think is great. Love the Drunk Dads
You gotta love when the shark raises out of the water and growls.
Boy it’s even worse in Jaws 4
The Book had some complications that the movie didn't use. There was some mob involvement leaning on the mayor, etc. Hooper and The Chief's wife had a one night fling, and Hooper gets killed by the shark.
I was a 12 y/o on vacation with my family in Myrtle Beach, SC. We waited in one of those "blockbuster" lines (3 times around the building) to see this awesome movie. Scared me to death in the best possible way. Went back in the water the next day. Lol. Enjoyed your reaction 👍
Quint was amazing. That man can act
Definitely in my top ten, it sparked my interest and love for them as a little boy.
Great reaction fellas. Enjoyed that.
To answer a couple of questions, yes the tiger shark was real. Caught off Florida and flown up to Martha's Vineyard in a crate. The barrels were to tire the shark out so it weakened and can be tied up and towed back to shore. Frank Mundus, who Quint was part based on, used this method for very large great whites. Quint was a trophy fisherman, as his shack showed us, and wanted it as the ultimate trophy, as well as his personal vendetta. He wasn't interested in just destroying it. It was HIS shark, in his view.
Cheers.
The movie was filmed in Marth's Vineyard in Massachusetts. We went there all the time when I was a young girl. I've probably seen this movie more than ANY other in my life !! It's my favorite !
I was 13 when I saw this movie when it came to the theaters. I won the ticket by being the correct # call in for the contest a local radio station was having. Great reaction and new subriber.
Thank you
Watching this movie at 13 when it came out is why I *still* don't go in the ocean.
Piranha took care of lakes and rivers about a year later.
Thank you for respecting and loving this classic movie. Seriously. it means a lot.
One of my favorite movies ever and one of the greatest movies ever made. You are both hilarious and I had to subscribe! Yes- that was a real tiger shark, I believe they brought it up from Florida, it had been killed inadvertently by a fishing boat or something (it's described in Carl Gottlieb's The Jaws Log- he's the screenwriter of the film and plays Meadows, the newspaperman). Just like in Nightmare on Elm Street 3, getting the real thing was cheaper and better than making a fake one!
Being a young child in 1975…I can detest.. this film changed the world.
Sadly, Susan Backlinie (Chrissie), passed away last month.
Thx for ur polite and fun for enjoying a cinematic classic. Thx
The music in this movie is iconic as well. Its scares you.
the bit where his son was imitating him happened offscreen when they were on break, speilberg saw it and said lets do that in na scene
… my Dad bought me and cousin tickets to see this for my 12th birthday, dropped us off at the theater and the ticket counter lady was like “are you going in with them
“ ?? My Dad said hell no, if they want to see it they can go by themselves …. One of the scariest movies id ever seen ( and i had already read the book ) 😂
Jaws was based on a real event.
“Jaws by Peter Benchley, published in 1974, and the 1975 movie directed by Steven Spielberg were inspired by the Jersey Shore shark attacks of 1916. Between July 1 and 12, 1916, four people were killed and one critically injured by sharks along the New Jersey coast. The attacks occurred during a heat wave and polio epidemic, when many people were visiting the Jersey Shore resorts. The media descended on the area to cover the story, and eventually a Barnum & Bailey lion tamer put an end to the attacks.”
one of the best book adaptations and they worked HARD on this movie, everyone
Not on the mayor's side, but the pressure from the town's business owners would be massive - and even though you're right that their businesses are not IN the water, per se, many people wouldn't bother going to the beach if they knew that they couldn't go into the water. Directly and indirectly, every business owner would be impacted and he'd be out of a job (at least from his standpoint; he's not the most principled person, for sure).
Quint wasn't really using the barrels for tracking the shark. The barrels are meant to wear the shark down....the shark was supposed to stop fighting them and start fighting against the harpoon. After so many barrels the shark is supposed to grow tired to the point they can attach the lines to the ship then drag it close to shore where it would tire to the point it stops swimming then drowns. At least that was how it was supposed to work. Unfortunately for Quint this shark was too damn big.
It was filmed on Martha's Vinyard. The story was based, loosly, on a early 1900s series of shark attacks at Mattawa, Mass. A shark attacked and killed a man in the ocean, then in a salty river delta, finally, A boy up that river. Three attacks, salt brackish, fresh, in the same week. I went to see it in the theater, first run, brand new, during the excitement. That, was a trip!
You are the ONLY reactors who actually understand the mayor's problem. I am impressed!
He is responsable for the town's financial wellbeing, as well as wanting to be reelected. So I think he was in denial. There had never been a shark attack in those waters before so he's hoping this was a freak occurrance.
It isn't until we see him breaking down in the hospital that reality hits him in the face.
In the novel, you find out the mayor had ties to the mafia. Keeping the beaches open was more motivated by wanting to keep the property values from going down since the mob had bought a lot of real estate there.
If y'all enjoyed this film, may I recommend Spielberg's technically first feature length film: Duel (1971). It was a TV movie he directed, but after it's success on TV, Universal decided to release it in Europe and gave Spielberg some money to film more scenes to turn it make it theatrical length. Duel is like the land-based version of Jaws. And Spielberg even includes a bit of a tribute to Duel in Jaws (when the shark's body sinks to the bottom of the ocean, you can hear a roaring sound. It's the same sound that you hear in Duel during the climax of that film). I got a feeling you'll like it. :)
Also, for Roy Scheider's wprl, if you haven't seen it, Sorcerer (1977) is another one I think you'd like.
One final thing: Quint destroyed the radio not because he wanted the money. Due to the trauma he suffered during the Indianapolis that he experienced, he became a trophy shark hunter. For every shark he kills, he feels like he's getting revenge for everyone who was lost during the incident. He's Ahab, and every shark is his White Whale.
Quint = Robert Shaw (1927-1978). Excellent character actor also known for The Sting, From Russia With Love and A Man For All Seasons, among many others.
I used to summer on the beach in Maine when I was a kid. The North Atlantic stays pretty cold year round and when the wind is coming off the water it acts like a giant air conditioner. It can be down right chilly on the beach if the wind is coming off the water and even in town it can be much cooler than it is further inland. It's not uncommon to see people walking the beach in shorts, flipflops and a sweatshirt.
Notice the man on the ferry with the mayor and sheriff in beginning. He is eternally Benchley the author, modeled them on the 1911 shark attacks on the east coast
Im a jaws baby, born in may 75, mom said i was at the drive in
Oh that’s cool
The term "blockbuster" is totally financial, it has nothing to do with a sidewalk. I saw this in the theater, it was a fun summer!
Yes it means financial but look it up rick did his homework the debut of the term in its infancy is correct
My namesake shark! These classic movies..wow..a very different time, waiting in lines for the next Star Wars, or Indiana jones, or close encounters… this collaboration between Steven Spielberg and John Williams..legendary! As the filming technology got better, and John Williams showed that movie music could be well, not just amazing but truly good, truly meaningful, plus I suppose the film companies saw how much $$’s there were to be made, we had a gold rush of films..my teen years were certainly blessed in terms of entertainment. My first R rated movie was Alien.. Yeah..I love the beach towns too, right up until the hurricane comes!
The lines for this movie were in large part at the drive-in movies, so cars, lined up out into the road. This movie had a large part in the popularity of 2nd run movie houses. We saw it again over the winter at the dollar movie
We saw it the summer of 1977 at our local drive-in... $2 a car load & 10 cents for a box of popcorn.
Those were the days...
I remember when this movie came out with an R rating and there was controversy about a possible X rating for it. Great movie!
I was 12 when this came out & and an older cousin said they would take me & my 15 yo cousin to see it. When he saw the lines, he literally said “fuck this” and took us to the nearest drive in….what was playing? The Exorcist…. Needless to say I had nightmares for months.
Thanks guys, I had some drinks watching the reaction... def a 2 drink min. This is one of my favorite movies ever. I hope they NEVER remake this cause they will just ruin it.
Totally agree, thanks for having a few with us!!!!
In the novel the Mayor was in deep with the mob. Spielberg wisely decided they didn't need to explain that, as it would take too much time. I feel the movie doesn't hurt a bit for it's removal.
I have always felt the most horrific thing in this movie is the mayor's sport coats. Saw this in the theater when it came out. I was about 14 years old. It was about a week before we left for a Florida vacation.
Whilst the shark is being chased by the boat they could open up the beaches.
Great review and comments guys! This is no doubt among the best terrifying movies ever made! EVER!
Agreed that’s for the comment
One of the producers of the movie, I think it was David Brown has gone on to say that if the mechanical sharks worked the way it was supposed, that the movie would have not been nearly as successful as it ended up. In regards to the title, the late Peter Benchly, when he was trying to come up with a title, came up with a billion different combinations of THE JAWS OF... (Insert scary name her), but couldn't figure out one that sounded right, so, since the only thing the titles had in common was the word "JAWS", so frustrated, I don't know if it was Benchly, he just decided to sa "Fuck it, we'll just call it JAWS." , and cinema history would never be the same. Also, JAWS became cinematic histor. It was the first movie to ever break the $100 million dollar mark. It changed the time that big films were made, and it created the summer blockbuster. It was also partially based on actual events, specifically, the Mattawan Creek shark attacks that happened in, if I remember correctly, 1969 over a 12 day period. Rumor has it that it was bull shark. The shark was disappeared, and is still evading arrest and trial to this day.
That is a real shark on the dock that fhey flew in from Florida.
Oh thanks I didn’t know that
This film was rated R when it was released in theatres.
No, PG.
@@KevyNova No, R. I saw it that summer.
@@magicbrownie1357 I also saw it in 1975, my parents took me when I was a little kid. It has always been rated PG, feel free to look it up if you don’t believe me.
14:56 They were around 22,000 years before the dinosaurs. But won't be around much longer: official figures show deaths from finning, by-catch netting and sport-hunting at... 73 million a year for over four years now. Sharks are on the endangered/extinction list, and is estimated may not exist in as little as ten years from now. :0(
on the coast, it can get cool in the mornings even in july
The first 40 minutes is called building the characters & story. The story is something that most of todays films have forgotten all about. Most of todays films are all CGI speed and loud music, and that hurts the final product !
Many ask if the story Quint tells about the USS Indianapolis is true, it is maybe a bit dramatized in this movie: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Indianapolis_(CA-35)
Sharks are 450 million years old. Thats over 200 million years before dinosaurs showed up.
its like a horror movie about a mutant supershark lol
theyre wearing it down while tracking it, with the heavy barrels.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☑️
Think was supposed be based in Maine i could be wrong but it was filmed in Massachusetts on some island
filmed in marthas vineyard, mass, but amityville is a real long island town
Not only was that poor tiger shark real, there was a delay shipping it up from the Gulf of Mexico. By the time they strung it up for the shot, it stank to high heaven and they couldn't let the head hang down or the guts would slide out.
After this movie came out. the fear of some people was real as was the curiosity. So My dad had a fishing boat out of Oceanside Ca. and people paid me to take them out looking to see a large Great White like the one in the movie.. A few times I came across a 17 foot long female Great White off of San Clemente Island. And while she wasn't as large as "Bruce" she still impressed my clients/ charter.
Oh that’s really cool, I’d probably be scared as hell but that’s still something you will never forget
@@DrunkDadsWatch At that time most of my clients had only seen small sharks on t.v. shows like Flipper or Sea Hunt or James Bond Thunderball. which wern't much bigger than six feet.
theres a good docu about the making of jaws
FILMED off the coast of Massachusetts. Alot in Marthas Vineyard as well....funny enough we have a great white problem at alot of beaches on Cap cod. Lol
It's a real tiger shark. It was caught and killed and then sent to Martha's Vineyard
I grew up in Santa Cruz, California right on the coast of California in the Monterey Bay and it was always cool there due to being that close to the ocean so wearing a jacket in that kind of weather is not that uncommon
most of the extras inclusding the guys with speaking parts were real islanders, they used,
Quint is like Captain Ahab.
Totally, he’s the best in this.
They are trying to kill a
It! Those barrels are meant to get the shark completely exhausted weather no fight at all left in the shark
Jaws are what sharks use to bite. Hence--JAWS.
Thanks …I was wondering if it maybe they gave the shark a corny nickname for fictional purposes …hence asking ….🤟
I can't believe you talked through and edited out most of one of the most memorable monologues in movie history! Seriously??
Copywrite issues sorry
The probability of being bitten by a shark is vanishingly small. According to the National Aquarium in Baltimore, it is one in 3.7 million.
The risk of being struck by lightning (one in 960,000) or an asteroid (one in 1.6 million) is significantly higher.
Steven Spielberg has made an ultra-thrilling film.
A great movie.
The scientific journal "Nature" published a study stating that the global population of sharks has declined by 71 percent since the 1970s due to overfishing.
Researchers blame films such as "Jaws" for the fact that people are in favor of killing predatory fish.
Spielberg has publicly apologized for the impact of his film...
"I regret to this day the decline in the shark population as a result of the book and the movie. I really regret that very much", said the 77-year-old filmmaker in an interview with the British BBC.
Hello, check out a movie called, 1492: Conquest of Paradise.
Adventure/Drama (1992). It stars Gérard Depardieu, Siqourney Weaver, Armante Assante. It portrays a version of the travels to the New World by the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus and the effect this had on indigenous peoples.
Directed by Ridley Scott.
Dude!!
You don’t tell someone the shark didn’t work and you don’t see it ….
Basically a spoiler
I guess they didn't have them yet or didn't want to use them in the movie but a shark nets could have close off access to the beach areas.
Maybe back in 75 they didn’t but good point
No shitty CGI.
Too many Bud Lights and too much estrogen in his blood to fight the tiny drop of alcohol made that soyboy at the beginning fall asleep.
Good story about the concrete cracking for the term....
"Summer Blockbuster"
....but it's actually from a bomb used in WWII ( Blockbuster Bomb ) ✌️🙂
Comment no dialogue. 😔
Sorry that’s not how we do things
Never watch another video by you 2. You spoil it. You don’t shut up at all. Watch the movie in full, you might understand it then.
I couldn't watch this. Maybe show alittle more movie and less of just the two of you talking and joking while we miss out on the movie.
Sorry you felt that way but we can only put a curtain amount on screen or we get a copyright
Can’t believe you haven’t seen this movie until now. Todays movies are Garbage. Do yourself a favor and watch movies before 2010. Everything after is unwatchable
I kinda agree with some exceptions
The prisoners 2011
Just one example
I don't get it…..if he hadn't seen it and knew nothing about it why the hell would you tell him about the shark not working, not seeing it and how it made for a better movie? Seriously, you ruined it. I stopped watching after that….have no idea what else you told him….possibly set him up for a ‘blast’ ending of sorts?
First time watching you guys. I thought you were cool until the F bombs.
It’s called drunk dads watch sorry if you were looking for something more PG
You guys should call yourselves the Middle School Boys. The most childishly inane review by so-called men I've seen on TH-cam.
Thanks Mrs Healy
I turned this off due to your insistence on using the Lord's name in vain. It's offensive, not to mention unnecessary.
Sorry you felt that way
I believe that's a real dead shark 15:24
Yeah that’s what I kinda thought just wasn’t sure
The story took place in Massachusetts
