Except for "Someone New" which he wrote with an ex. And unlike the Calvin Harris-Taylor Swift shade throwdown over songwriting contribution, he fully credits her and shouts her out and her music every chance he got. And she's Loah, by the way and has made a name for herself in the Irish music scene. Great music. not as big or international as Hozier, but known enough that it wouldn't do to mention her every time lest she be forever labeled as Hozier's ex.

3 songs that I think you should also hear are just on the deluxe version of the Hozier album but you'll be blow away by "Run", "In the Woods Somewhere" and "Arsonist's Lullaby". The last two have been featured in Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead, respectively. So yeah there is a through point of being buried, decomposition and becoming one with nature or being reborn/resurrected/renewed/live on in undying love. He is heavily influenced by Irish poet Seamus Heaney writing about bog bodies. I dunno if this was a funny coincidence or just a connection but there is a real Irish bog body matching Hozier's 6'6 stature who they believe was a druid, called Cronagh man. They are not sure if he was executed or consensually sacrificed.

"In a Week" sounds akin to a murder ballad only they die together, no mention of the murderer at all or violence, just the peaceful acceptance of death and becoming one with nature through the food chain. A kind death and rebirth. It might also be a song about the afterglow after doin' it while camping in the wilderness. A contemplation on nature's life cycle after having the small death (la petit morte, orgasm, another reference to his other song).

38:12 from what i know, it will come back isn't an intentional continuation of the storyline in from eden, but that's a really interesting way to read it. i can definitely see that with the "i slithered here from eden just to sit outside your door" line. to me, it will come back stands on its own and just speaks to the comparison of a desperate unrequited lover to a feral dog; "don't feed it, it will come back" is a common thing adults said to me as a kid when telling me not to feed wild animals, or else they'd come back for more. hozier compares himself to a hungry dog, in that he won't be able to help himself from coming back and waiting helplessly for more attention/food if this person shows him any kind of affection, so it's better if they don't do that, or don't "feed" him at all. but i love the comparison! if nothing else, i think it really speaks to an interesting metaphorical throughline in the way hozier writes about longing

Take Me To Church obviously blew up when in came out, but then it seems like radio didn’t know what to do with Hozier beyond that. His sound is layered and complex and his lyrics are so vastly different than your average pop music. He’s very deep and literary and his sound just doesn’t fit into a box.
And I’m not sure if you’re aware or not, but he’s from Ireland, so his influences aren’t those of a typical American experience, but yet are so relatable.
And as many others have said- be sure to check out Wasteland Baby. Nina Cried Power is a duet with the legendary Mavis Staples. Movement is great and I personally really like Shrike (it’s a bird of prey). Like his first album, this one is a whole mood and very different than most artists his age. He just turned 30 earlier this year and little tidbit from the inter webs...he’s 6’6”!

God, I cannot recommend reading Hozier's lyrics enough! He's an absolute poet, and his lyrics are breathtaking.
You were definitely right in your guess that Take Me To Church is about sex rather than attending church😂 It's actually a criticism of the catholic church and the way they condemn human sexuality (like sex outside of marriage, homosexuality, etc). Hozier often describes sex and love as spiritual in his music, and he strongly disagrees with the church's claims that these things are sinful or bad if they don't fit within the narrow and ridgid framework the bible presents us with.
I would honestly kill for a video on Wasteland, Baby! (as well as his EP and the singles he's released throughout the years, because they're literally all incredible) so do feel free to listen to that as well!

I love watching how much you love this! I’ve been utterly, irrevocably in love with this artist from the beginning and I still listen to this album and hear something new or gain a new perspective every single time. Absolute fucking masterpiece! So is Wasteland Baby! The only complaint I have about this reaction and I swear, I only have one, is that you’re not paying enough attention to the lyrics. Honestly, when you have a chance, if you haven’t already, PLEASE pay attention to what he’s saying. My god I can’t even articulate how his words just break my heart in the best possible way. My heart physically hurts. The tears in his voice and the words behind it, I truly believe would make poets like Bob Dylan and Don McLean proud. I’ve never so heavily related to an artist so heavily.
