The original feels more like the singer can't even admit to himself the level of rejection and loss he's enduring. Whereas this version strikes me as though he's completely and painfully aware of what he can't change but he still holds to hope anyway, which to me translates as tragically beautiful. Who doesn't know the ache of longing and despair, the knowledge that that release will never come the way you want it to but you hold on anyway. Hoping against hope to be the exception to the rule.

This was not as much of a cover as it is a transformation. The original was written in B-flat major (evoking nostalgia and reflection). I love both versions so much! They are like two stages of recovering from one-sided love. Hozier's version is filled with a deep heartbreak, and longing, and sadness, and yearning. I would disagree to be honest. This version sounds a bit too happy and romantic, which I feel the lyrics are neither. The singer in the song is not in a good state. He's falling asleep drunk on his couch, and obsessing over this woman and coming back to her when he's drunk. It's a song about love and lust yes, but it's showing the darker side of the controlling power of love, and obsession.
Hozier KNOWS how to make a good cover. Not just singing the song with his GODLIKE voice, but making it his own, using the themes and bending them in a beautifully melodic way which still honours the original without being too similar. Beautiful

The same song, the same lyrics but completely different perspectives on dealing with unrequited love. The original feels more like the singer can't even admit to himself the level of rejection and loss he's enduring. Whereas this version strikes me as though he's completely and painfully aware of what he can't change but he still holds to hope anyway, which to me translates as tragically beautiful. Who doesn't know the ache of longing and despair, the knowledge that that release will never come the way you want it to but you hold on anyway. Hoping against hope to be the exception to the rule.

This was not as much of a cover as it is a transformation. The original was written in B-flat major (evoking nostalgia and reflection). The way Hozier sings this cover occasionally raises the flats by a semitone into a c minor (Someone Like You by Adele and Take Me to Church are sung in this key), creating a sense of melancholy. Fascinating artistic choice indeed.
The tone is so much sadder in this version. Love it because the lyrics seem to have more meaning this way.

I would disagree to be honest. This version sounds a bit too happy and romantic, which I feel the lyrics are neither. The singer in the song is not in a good state. He's falling asleep drunk on his couch, and obsessing over this woman and coming back to her when he's drunk. It's a song about love and lust yes, but it's showing the darker side of the controlling power of love, and obsession.
