Here's a fun idea - How about building main decks made up of only extra deck monsters (save for links) and have them playable like regular monster cards? With the levels/ranks under the normal summoning conditions?
Special kudos to Alec, that's a cool way to run a pure spell deck, ofc the trap deck is good too but playing trap monsters seems a lot more commonly known than running a spell deck that actually can bring some battle power to the board as well.
Magic Cylinder, Poison Of The Old Man, Mirror Force... Some classics that can HURT in a style like this. Heck, an Ookazi in that second duel could've clutched it easier than a token.
Normally Mine Burn was played with just 1 monster, Silent Wobby in deck, most burn strats dont run any monsters, and when they do they never hit the field anyway. You can get a lot with just spells though. Tokens, burn damage, stuff like that.

It would be interesting to do a challenge where your hands are always revealed along with the top card of your next draw. All traps, spells and monsters are played face up but can still be activated as normal. Could call it the Millennium eye challenge or something :)
I'd love to see a version of this Duel where Main Deck Monsters are still prohibited but Extra Deck Monsters are legal. Imagine Paul using the Paleozoics to their full potential or "Link Spider" turning Alec's tokens into Link material. It could open up plays in an interesting way.

Also the misplays of setting trap cards with trap monsters that's still considered a trap. The zone would've been locked and couldn't be used. Unless they are playing MR5...
At 4:43 Danger Zone should not be allowed to activate because that Trap Monster said it is an Effect Monster, as explained when it is destoryed by battle it destroys what beat it in battle.
I like that Uria was mentioned at 7:53, I use 2 copies of it on my goblin deck (irl & master duel). Btw, my fave combo in that deck is the trap final attack orders w/the various goblin attack force cards 👍
A couple of ideas. 1. A time trial duel, like having Final Countdown automatically at the beginning of the duel. First to defeat their opponent within ie: 20 turns. Draw if the turn limit is reached. 2. A Life Points goal, ie: first to 20k LP, not accumulated but just the actual LP going to or beyond the set goal. You can burn your opponent to halt their LP down. Monsters effects or battle damage still applies. 3. Each deck of their own. Both will build a deck but the other will use the deck built by their opponent. On the spot strategizing. Every draw is likely unknown to you. Alot of these could still be revised. Its just at the top of my head atm.
Here's a fun weird one: you can only play monsters that are boosted by the active field spells. Players can start with a basic gen-1 field spell in play
This is not a special thematic duel but ever since the new support on master duel came out that I would love to see a duel between the Sharks and the Ghoti decks, XYZ fish vs Synchro fish, either irl or on MD

Trap monster decks are such a neat control strategy. If you aren't a complete purist, you can toolbox the extra deck with a bunch of xyz and link monsters, as well. Spells put up a good effort, but trap monsters reign supreme. 😎
Spells have better strengths than token monsters. Wave Motion Cannon and Cauldron of the Old Man, with magic reflector to make them survive longer; clock tower prison to make you unkillable by direct attacks, I have a "mostly spells" deck that does pretty well against old school stuff (my friends didn't really update past synchro and we play quite casual). The few monsters I have are just for "alternative" removal like lava golem and ra sphere mode, or survival like scapeghost.
You guys should try doing a tournament style on master duel either against each other or have others duel each other with a member of Team APS as the final battle

Wow, speaking as someone whose main experience with yu gi oh was the DS games, the depth of the game is crazy. And the fact that spell and trap cards can just combo off for free feels insane, “oh yeah, I just dump my entire hand for free in my first turn, your move”
Glad it came up during the duel that some of the trap monsters are effect and some are normal; that had me pretty confused cause I knew a few were effect monsters when summoned lol
Me personally I would have gone with Imperial Order and Solemn Wishes, upkeep could be steep but literally negating the opponents entire deck from functioning sounds effective, anti-spell fragrance would also be effective. Cemetery Bomb can hit pretty hard if the game drags on. Anything more interesting than a game with no monsters where they just... use monsters anyway.
The only question I have is when Alec equipped ekiboyo drakmoid 2 Paws trap card monster as he had a fullback role was that possible because doesn't it get equipped into Paul's back row zone?
I had no doubt Trap would win: Monster Traps are annoying and OP under the right game. Plus Secret Barrel would have been good to use for burn but then again, Spells would win more times than Traps if Burn cards were used. Great duels!
Good lord this was interesting. I only kno how to play cards up to chaos control era so the only thing I cud think of was activating a bunch of scapegoats and giving them alot of equip spells 😆
I saw a misplay right at the start. When alec was explaining fateful adventure, he said the wrong effect. It only protects minsters equipped with a card once per turn by battle.
I didn’t read other comments but Alec would’ve lost because Moon Mirror Shield’s effect to pay life points and return the top or bottom of the deck is mandatory!
That was cool. But ps, 1. Usually in games, monsters that are still traps still use a trap zone AND a monster zone and 2. At the end when anguish destroyed the token, that was a chain so the token would've been destroyed before the spell, thus it would've survived. Still enjoyed the duel. Built a spell token deck once too
Hey Alec you could not activate supernatural danger zone at 4:43 do to Angel Statue - Azurune being summoned as a effect monster so the effect can’t go off since it only activates when a non-effect monster is summoned Sorry if I sounded like judge or something like that I know this is for fun but I just like to point out mistakes that happen even my own
So statue is actually really funny to use because you can summon 4 cards at least to destroy that many things during your opponents turn with protection with tikis it’s funny how well it works
I wonder if there is any way you can play synchros with a deck with only spell or traps. Maybe it would be cool to see this challenge again but you are also allowed to play extra deck monsters of a certain type. Anyways great video and creative video idea. Love to see this type of interesting challenge. It really allows unusual strategies to see the spotlight.
You could definitely do it with spells. There are spells that just let you treat a monster as a tuner, I guess you could play those with a bunch of token generators. It's really bad, but it's doable.

As someone who has ran trap heavy decks and spell heavy decks i'm not surprised traps won.
