It makes the mother brain fight into an echo of the climax of the previous chronological game. It also sets up the intro to Super itself, since it causes Ridley appearing at Ceres to become much more personal- Samus just humiliated Ridley on SR388 a few hours ago, so now Ridley is retaliating by ambushing Samus and taking something he knows she cares about from her. It also sets up the idea of Ridley playing dead to fool Samus more clearly, rather than it just being something implied to have happened between Zero Mission and Prime 1; Ridley fakes his death here, in Samus Returns, and we see he's still alive and well from the post credits scene, having cast off his Meta Ridley implants that remained, become fully organic, and pursued Samus to Ceres immediately. Finally, it establishes Ridley had cybernetic implants and has the Prime 3 Meta Ridley armor which you can see in the unlockable Smash Bros Samus concept art gallery thing (which shows Ridley's armor is indeed silver, meaning it's just reflecting the green storm ingame and explains why the armor is silver in the post credits scene), but just partially removed from him. That alone insinuates he did in fact escape from the Urtragia Leviathan, like people have speculated for years since you can see what is potentially Ridley's shadow zip directly above Samus when the camera pans away, and that therefore Samus Returns is set chronologically after Prime 3 once and for all. Prime Trilogy has been canon, yea, but there were way too many idiots saying it wasn't, so hopefully this will stuff a sock in them finally.
Jacob Heward I never really thought about the mother brain thing but it seems so obvious. But yeah I like how it makes his appearance at the start of Super Metroid make sense. What I loved about this, is that it kinda adds to the Metroid’s love for Samus. and the game play moving in a 3d space with the dpad is just an stupid control setup needing to be told when to use your upgrades is stupid the only thing I like is you start with all your upgrades
I like how protective Samus is of the baby Metroid (which apparently everyone calls Squishy). Like she felt guilty for actually wiping out an entire species, and sees this as her opportunity to redeem them, and have them be used for good. Maybe it was her connection to the Chozo. But if Mercury Steam ever makes a remake of Super Metroid (and they should), I hope they show just how pissed off Samus got when Squishy died
@@Podzhagitel Funny joke but that game is old as shit and incredibly outdated. It could really benefit from a remake. If you think it was the perfect game for its time, you should be BEGGING this company to give it a faithful remake like they've done for this one.
Oh, this makes sense!! The metroid saps energy from Ridley and into Samus, but that little taste of Samus it gets allows it to recognise her in Super Metroid and not fully kill her in Tourian!!
Mercury Steam KNOCKED it out of the park with this release. If Nintendo decides to do another 2D Metroid, hopefully this does well because it absolutely deserves it, then they NEED to get Mercury Steam back to develop it.
@@KeithMyers2022 Save that for a Fusion remake. Idk if it'd be better to use the game style of Samus Returns or the Prime games for it though. I think Other M might've highlighted what a Fusion remake could look like in 3D.
Ascenndant Fusion doesn’t really need a remake What we need is for Nintendo to finish Prime 4 Plus a new title in the series since Fusion did leave some things in the air in its ending
At first I thought they were gonna shoehorn Ridley at the end just because. But no, this hit all the right notes with the brutal fighting and even the baby aiding in the fight, so amazingly well done.
@@spike1670been playing this series for 21 years now. Went back and played the older ones many times. No, you're absolutely wrong. This was a fantastic way to end the game.
I feel like that’s just because it’s how Metroid bosses tend to work, they turn redder and redder as their health gets lower I don’t think it’s specifically a reference to Super
"The last know surviving Metroid will soon be secured and the galaxy will finally be at peace..." Ridley in a flamboyant voice:"Not if I can help it!!!"
Who would win? A giant cyber-dragon feared across the galaxy as commander of genocidal privateers and nicknamed cunning god of death... ...or one mom and her squishyboi?
Isn't that what he always does? I mean we all know somehow, whenever they make a game that takes place after Fusion he'll somehow come back AGAIN wether it be via cloning again, some crazy bullshit that let the original Ridley survive Super Metroid or whatever. It's just what Ridley fucking does, he gets his ass whooped in basically every game and somehow finds a way to come back.
I've never had this much fun in a boss fight. I love going from "I don't see how you could possibly dodge that attack!" to confidently jumping over and dodging every attack with ease, while punishing Ridley all the while. I only wish it was more difficult, cause I wanted to fight him for much longer.
The most badass and terrifying thing about Ridley here is even after that beatdown he STILL manages to steal back the baby metroid and destroys a space station shortly afterwards
In theory, this may have been a side effect of his corruption in the Pirate Homeworld Leviathan Core - It would also explain why he has shed much of his cybernetics from when he was Omega Ridley
Clever on Nintendo's part to throw Ridley in this game as the true final boss. Nice way to trick old time players of Metroid 2 and to separate itself from AM2R. I also find it a nice way to connect it to Super Metroid in how the Baby helps attacks and absorbs some of the enemy's energy.
Incredible Jake this isn't metroid 2. Metroid 2 is better. Waaaaay better. This game is trash. I'm not even gunna buy it. Not even worth the 13 dollars i spent on the original metroid 2 lime a decade ago.
Been with Samus since Super Metroid and I have to say, this has been the most enjoyable Ridley encounter yet. Beat the game this morning, such a treat. Nintendo hasn't forgotten that Samus exists, I'm glad about that.
Can we take a moment to appreciate how this game re-canonized the Prime Trilogy with this fight, having Ridley in between his Meta and organic forms due to Phazon's restorative properties? This was such a good remake
As someone who loves Super and Prime’s Meta Ridley, this is easily my favorite look for him. I like how he mostly looks like his normal/non cyborg self we see in Zero Mission/Super but with enough asymmetrical armor and gear that it makes it look as if he’s wearing some standard issue space pirate battle harness. Makes him feel a little more connected to the group he himself co-leads.
Given how fast Ridley heals between phases, and each time Baby Metroid drains him, it's probably not a battle harness as much as a life support system, since he still has other cybernetic body parts and probably hasn't fully regenerated from his Meta Ridley/Omega Ridley state yet.
You know, this makes the pre-Other M Ridley boss encounters jump up to 7 (Zero Mission, Prime 1, Prime 3 - twice, Samus Returns, and Super - twice), making her breakdown in that game even *more* nonsensical.
Also since this confirms Prim is canon and this is him coming back from being a corpse and being disintegrated as Omega Ridley, yeah the break down has lost all logical reasoning she should be expecting him to appear everywhere at this point.
Kage1713 Careful there, cowboy. Ridley disintegrating and appearing like this makes no sense in conjunction with Prime canon imo. If so, he should be covered in more cybernetics cuz theu were designed to help him recover
Unless it was a PTSD attack that she was Holding back every Encounter and that one in other m was just too much for her seeing him after she destroyed an entire planet with Ridley on it so she gave in. PTSD cannot be cured and is unpredictable when it strikes. I could ask my Grandfather about his war stories and he could tell me about them and if i ask him the next day or an hour later he could be send to Hospital because of a serious PTSD attack.
Not to defend that OOC moment, but keep in mind that Ridley's actual, canon, 100%-he's-gone-for-good (clones notwithstanding) death was in Super Metroid, which takes place after Metroid 2/Samus Returns. It's a bit nebulous as to what's different about that death from other deaths, but it seems that the general idea is that Samus actually takes the time to literally blow Ridley apart (represented by him literally falling to pieces instead of just disappearing when he's beaten) before leaving him on a planet that LITERALLY EXPLODES - a demise so final that not even Ridley could survive it. Aaaaand then he comes right back in Other M, bigger and uglier than ever (as a clone, mind you, but still). At that point, I think Samus is honestly wondering if he's legit immortal - and, if you assume Ridley's as sadistic and intelligent as the manga and other supplementary material indicates (and also remembers Samus from his original self's genetic memory), he would absolutely take the time to rub it in and play up his apparent unkillability for all it's worth.
I love the Context of Ridley realizing the potential of this Metroid as it drains his energy. It gives more reasoning behind why the space pirates want it since with that type of strength they can conquer the universe.
At this point nothing will kill Ridley, I'm suprised Samus hasn't gone on a Space Pirate murdering spree to destroy anyone who might want to revive/clone/cyborg-ify Ridley again for the 500th time. Even then someone would probably slip under the radar and do it anyway Samus is just that unlucky when it come to dealing with the giant purple pain in the ass.
I think that's what triggers Samus PTSD a second time in her life. Zebes exploded, if a planet exploding doesn't kill Ridley. What does? Fortunately, it was just a clone
@@justascarecrow6988 Dead but not Forgotten Ridley will always Haunt Samus no matter what Shape or Form Clone or Mecha he is The Cunning God of Death and He'll always come Back.
@@isaiahkayode6526 I could see Samus having a psychological episode where she has to fight him but it’s all on her head. I think Samus PTSD isn’t the kind where she’s necessarily afraid of Ridley but just that she has killed him so many times only for him to somehow come back that she prbly sees it as normal now, so if she dreamt about it, she wouldn’t think twice about kicking his ass again
this boss was TOTALLY unexpected for me since I played this blind. oh boy it was a treat! Samus DOESN'T lapse into PTSD but goes all in to take Ridley down, Ridley himself being here in Meta Form acknowledges the Prime series in the main games at long last, he's super powerful and a worthy final boss, AND gives more of a reason of him knowing where to go after the Last Metroid in Super!!! speaking of which, Super Metroid remake next? c'mon guys, great as it is there are some things that CAN be improved in even that game.
+AtomicMelodies While I agree that Super Metroid is fantastic and has aged incredibly well, I wouldn't be opposed for a ground-up remake in the same style as Samus Returns.
I think I’m in the minority in the sense that I feel like I will never grow tired of Ridley. He’s like the Bowser/Ganondorf of Metroid. Other villains may take the spotlight on occasion, but there’s something about him that I just always want to see more of. He’s unique. Part of that is how different he is in-game versus in lore. The lore that he’s a hyperintelligent military commander adds so much more depth to him than the ferocious monster you see in-game. They complement each other. Normally a villain would feel overpowered having both strengths and smarts like him, but it never comes off that way since you only see one of those sides of him in the games. Also, I feel like his sheer animalistic ferocity is unmatched as a villain, ESPECIALLY a recurring villain. Normally, villains like him are one-and-done. But his intelligence allows him to keep coming back in new ways. As for how he keeps coming back, my headcanon is that they’ve uploaded his consciousness into a computer. That way, every time he dies, they can use dna samples to clone a new body for him and implant his consciousness into that new body. They never have more than one exist at a time though, since they are prone to shredding each other to pieces to assert dominance.
Metroid 1, Prime 1 & 3, Samus Returns, and Super Metroid all have the same Ridley, his regenerative healing ability is very powerful. Other M has the Federation unintentionally clone him, and when he’s killed by the Queen Metroid in that game, he’s used by the X in fusion to fight Samus. Point being, he’s been through the gutter
This is Ridley’s best appearance to date (excluding Meta Ridley). It’s cool, cinematic, the Boss poses a challenge, it helps develop the story, and it feels like a fight between equals.
To me, this feels like a confirmation that prime series takes place between Metroid 1 and 2, since we fight meta ridley, and it has a remix of the meta ridley theme. He seems less mechanical than in the prime games though, so i would assume phazon radiation lead to rapid regrowth of his cells, growing other the mechanical parts, explaining why he looks normal in Super Metroid.
This is a Ridely right done so much better than in Other M. Samus and Ridely trade blows in an interesting and surprisingly cinematic battle for a 3DS game. Samus doesn’t just Mary Sue to victory either, Ridely almost beats her at one point showing how evenly matched they are and that they’re ultimate rivals for all eternity. Also it’s just really cool I mean look at all the lasers flying everywhere!
Fun Fact: Proteus Ridley was given the cybernetic appearance to maintain minimum continuity between the main Metroid games, and the Metroid Prime series, essentially making the Prime series canon.
This is hilarious, I come down to the comment section and all I see is people bashing the scene of Other M when Ridley shows up XD Still Ridley's durability is not to be questioned, I mean he got Metroid drained three times and had the sh*t blasted out of him and took point blank missiles- And he comes back in Super Metroid looking healthier than before.
Ridley shedding his implants is actually a brilliant foresight to the start of Super Metroid. Since the game is set several hours after Samus Returns, Ridley is still very weak in the Ceres Space Colony. Since he got his ass handed to him in SR388, it's a valid reason why Samus can easily damage him with the Power Beam.
@@Nyxael5845 ultra late, but considering that Ridley can supposedly regenerate, and the Prime Trilogy takes place between Zero Mission and Samus Returns (or 1 and 2 if you prefer) then basically this is the halfway point between Meta Ridley and Ridley. After this he was probably beat up but well enough to consume enough biomass (aka parents) to regenerate himself completely. Plus even though it's called a replica in his likeness, I like to think his brain's floating around in Robot Ridley. So Ridley went from being healthy to getting his ass kicked so hard he became mostly mechanical to being Ridley with prostetic limbs to being Ridley again. Such an inspiring comeback story, right before Samus fucked up his shit again and he was eaten by X Parasites. As all happy endings go~
Oh my god, Squishy saved Samus! Wait...didn't Fusion say something about... lemme check Wikitroid. "Pondering this fact, I realize... I owe the Metroid hatchling my life twice over."-Samus Aran. Twice...TWICE! ARRRG, THEY BROKE CANON!!!
kuribo04 Ridley had her pinned to the ground while shooting fireballs that do almost an E-tank per shot at her. If the baby metroid hadn't have stepped(floated?) in and latched on to Ridley, Samus probably would have died.
I am aware lmao, but I think next a Fusion remake should happen, after a sequel to it of course. Super Metroid is fine as it is, maybe do a little animation to update some of the lore for the beginning and end, but that's about it that could happen. Fusion would be incredible, especially on the Switch.
I did NOT see Ridley coming. When he snatched the baby, I literally said "Let him go!!", and "I'm his mother, not you!". I also love in the last phase you AND the baby defeat Ridley together, as mother and child.
According to Wikitroid, Metroids can gain powers of their victims. Like Ridley, the Metroids in this game can breath fire, which is possible if he had been in contact with Queen Metroid. The conclusion: Ridley is father of the baby.
This game does Samus’s character so good. For example, in the cutscene where the baby hatches, not a single word is spoken. But you can tell EXACTLY what is going through her mind. And I’ve noticed people who defend Other M’s cutscenes always have to reach so hard to justify it. The Metroid series has ALWAYS been able able to convey powerful emotions without useless drivel.
Was definitely a nice touch to throw Ridley in as the final boss- it makes total sense too, given the Space Pirates' need to weaponize Metroids to satisfy their murder boner, and Samus just fucking killed them all.
Buff Ridley worked for Other M: Being a clone, of course he wouldn't come out exactly the same as before, and he was well equipped to beat Samus around, yet lacked the fear and intimidation factor lanky skeletal Ridley has...
I mean yeah. Almost all ridley figjts are the same except mecharidley. This one is the only ridley fight I actually enjoy. The super metroid ridley annoying fight.
Played on normal mode. Absolutely the hardest boss battle I’ve ever had on a hand held and I date back to the original Game Boy. It took a while to figure out the algorithms this time. Nintendo did not make this easy. Diggernaut was also a toughie. Good game. Lots of work to get thru. And thanks for the video. It helped immensely.
@@kingofflames738 Samus having PTSD isn't canon though. It's only canon to the manga and Other M which was based off of the manga. The manga has never been canon for either the Metroid or the Zelda series.
Brutal fight, it just keeps going. Think I'll just save all my super missiles for the melee finisher in the final phase. The endgame bosses make this probably the hardest Metroid I've played.
Nintendo had this battle ended in for two key reasons: 1) Firmly establish the Prime games are canon after Other M suggested they weren't. 2) Firmly establish Samus does not break down into a quivering child after Other M made her do so. Even the title "Samus Returns" feels like a meta way for Nintendo to say this is the Samus we loved and not that loser from Other M
This boss fight is so funny from a narrative perspective because there is zero time elapsed between Metroid 2 and Metroid 3. Samus finds the baby in research colony Ceres. Suddenly the baby is lifted into the air. It's Ridley!!! Samus: Didn't I kill you like, yesterday?
I doubt that's accurate, as the scientists on the station had enough time to do some research on the Metroid. It wasn't a long period of time for sure, but not that short.
good to know you can counter him after all. by the time he uses that claw move, he dealt so much damage, i didn't feel comfortable trying to counter it.
Can I just say that the lighting, scenery, mood, and music all completely went together PERFECT? The green light along with the amazingly well made background (tornado, green clouds, lightning, odd landforms, the ship) just went flawlessly together. Possibly one of my favorite boss battles for even just those reasons. And the cut scenes (camera angles, camera shakes, sound effects, etc.) on top of that just makes it even better. Whoever was in charge of making this boss fight has done extremely well. I am really surprised that the 3DS could handle this. Amazing job done.
I enjoy the small foreshadowing to this battle. If you played the original game, you'd think that since you killed the Queen Metroid, that would be the end of it and all you have to do is get to your ship. So then why are you still getting power ups?
It’s bittersweet seeing the Baby Metroid help Samus, and the heartbreaking memory of “the Baby” being destroyed in Super Metroid’s storyline. One day, I hope, another Baby Metroid befriends Samus 🕊
Ridley's goal in phase 1: Steal the baby
Ridley's goal in phase 2: Get the baby back
Ridley's goal in phase 3: Kill Samus
The baby😏
he doesn't really seem to be after the baby in the second phase tho, and he almost kills samus in the cutscene, so I think phase 2 and phase 3 are the same goal.

After all these years, finally Ridley is the Final boss in a game of Metroid :)
Oh you're right. I never thought about that, haha.
And its the best one yet, I mean this is the closest thing we'll probably get to a metroid movie.

I know right lol I've been thinking that for years
What about Mecha Ridley from Zero Mission tho?
I like how protective Samus is of the baby Metroid (which apparently everyone calls Squishy). Like she felt guilty for actually wiping out an entire species, and sees this as her opportunity to redeem them, and have them be used for good. Maybe it was her connection to the Chozo. But if Mercury Steam ever makes a remake of Super Metroid (and they should), I hope they show just how pissed off Samus got when Squishy died
Well if Dread is any indication, they'll do a good job at that!
@Jaeger19Ultima Maybe some day....it was the game Mercury Steam originally pitched to Nintendo for a remake.

If Nintendo decides to do another 2D Metroid, hopefully this does well because it absolutely deserves it, then they NEED to get Mercury Steam back to develop it.
this needs a switch release.

Red Ridley? More like...REDLEY!
Uhh actually he's red because in SM we fight him on a platform that has lava around it, and it's the lava's light that makes him look red
I feel like that’s just because it’s how Metroid bosses tend to work, they turn redder and redder as their health gets lower I don’t think it’s specifically a reference to Super
As much as I love calling the baby Squishy why are we letting ourselves grow so attached to it when we know it's gonna die in Super Metroid

Samus X is literally nitendo's Mr. X.
For me, Ridley is best returning character Nintendo ever made. So I am happy, that they make him as final boss of Samus Returns remake.
Incredible Jake MercurySteam deserves credit as well as they are the ones who Nintendo trusted to make the game.
Incredible Jake this isn't metroid 2. Metroid 2 is better. Waaaaay better. This game is trash. I'm not even gunna buy it. Not even worth the 13 dollars i spent on the original metroid 2 lime a decade ago.
+RStaR RaptoR Cool how you know it's trash before buying it
clearly he's trolling, pay them no mind.
Also, it shows Ridley slowly becoming organic again after the events of the Prime series. Good stuff. :)
Ridley: THIS IS WHAT YOU GET FOR NOT INCLUDING ME IN METROID 2
Been with Samus since Super Metroid and I have to say, this has been the most enjoyable Ridley encounter yet. Beat the game this morning, such a treat. Nintendo hasn't forgotten that Samus exists, I'm glad about that.
And Nintendo won't forgot ever again that the Metroid franchise exists because of the popularity of Metroid Dread
Can we take a moment to appreciate how this game re-canonized the Prime Trilogy with this fight, having Ridley in between his Meta and organic forms due to Phazon's restorative properties?
This was such a good remake
You can just FEEL the outright HATRED these two have for each other in the final phase music.
Stay here and be good mommy Samus has to go kill an evil space pterodactyl
This fight and the cutscenes after it do so much foreshadowing it's amazing
and there he is, one of the best and more memorable boss ever
Unless Prime 4 explains the deal with that.
Maybe in that game he's just a brain in a jar.
Honestly, I’d love for a game set between this and super where Samus and the hatchling go on an adventure together
I would like one, too. And since I'm starving for anything Metroid, I wouldn't mind a spin-off style game of them doing something together.
@@novau115 As of dread (no, he doesn't appear there.)

im guessing fusion since they already redid much of supers soundtrack, but no fusion songs
no, super metroid is still so polished and well made that to this day it doesn't warrant a remake.
I think Metroid Fusion is a much more likely candidate, though I would rather they expand the series rather than remake another game.
+AtomicMelodies While I agree that Super Metroid is fantastic and has aged incredibly well, I wouldn't be opposed for a ground-up remake in the same style as Samus Returns.

1:24 Samus like "Oh HELL no, you're going back to bed RIGHT now!"
Ridley but it’s Saturday!
@@I.T.P and the bastard STILL keeps coming back for more.

At 1:30, it looks like Squishy is cheering for Samus lol
3:39 The timing of the hit and music was perfect

Still Ridley's durability is not to be questioned, I mean he got Metroid drained three times and had the sh*t blasted out of him and took point blank missiles- And he comes back in Super Metroid looking healthier than before.
Probably ate some other kids parents to recover. Let's just hope this one isn't adopted by magical space birds too.
To be fair, said Metroid is just a newborn.

Welp time to remake Fusion, gg.
Smash Nippy The guys behind Samus Returns actually wanted to remake Fusion, but were talked into doing this game.
The conclusion:
Ridley is father of the baby.

Nintendo had this battle ended in for two key reasons:
1) Firmly establish the Prime games are canon after Other M suggested they weren't.
2) Firmly establish Samus does not break down into a quivering child after Other M made her do so.
Even the title "Samus Returns" feels like a meta way for Nintendo to say this is the Samus we loved and not that loser from Other M

I doubt that's accurate, as the scientists on the station had enough time to do some research on the Metroid. It wasn't a long period of time for sure, but not that short.

People might not be fans of the direction they took the games ending, but everyone can admit they did it damn well
Can I just say that the lighting, scenery, mood, and music all completely went together PERFECT? The green light along with the amazingly well made background (tornado, green clouds, lightning, odd landforms, the ship) just went flawlessly together. Possibly one of my favorite boss battles for even just those reasons. And the cut scenes (camera angles, camera shakes, sound effects, etc.) on top of that just makes it even better. Whoever was in charge of making this boss fight has done extremely well. I am really surprised that the 3DS could handle this. Amazing job done.
Imagine fighting Ridley all while not trying to kill the baby at the same time! That would’ve made it really, really challenging.
The parallels between this and the Raven Beak fight in Dread are uncanny.
