My favorite part is Raven Beak basically uses your moves but super beefed up. He’s even got his own melee counter. Really shows you he’s the warrior part of Samus’s blood donors. So technically this whole time Samus has been using a Mawkin fighting style.
Even more uncanny when you look at the murals in the lower left elevator of Ferenia and realize the Mawkin have been giving the Space Pirates a run for their money in times before.
He can even use the speed booster without running beforehand! Cheater!

So Samus is still technically an orphan of her human parents but since she was altered with Raven Beak’s blood, he’s also a parent of sorts to Samus? Is that how I’m reading it?

I still got goosebumps holy shit, and with ppl saying this will be the last metroid chronologically wise, I cant accept that, the whole bit at the end with the chozo, the metroid suit samus all of this must be explored at a metroid 6, that one should be the final game in the series (chronologically-wise)

@@wigglyplays5958 No. She was able to get the Ice Beam because of the Varia Suit's protection against being Frozen from Within. That meant she was perfectly safe using it by that point.
I took that to mean she has had the Hyper beam all this time just dormant.

I love that while in Fusion, the main enemy was effectively Full Power Super Metroid Samus, in Dread the bad guy is an Elite Chozo Warrior who basically makes even Samus at full power look like a pale imitation: He's bigger, stronger, faster, more agile, AND his arm cannon is way more powerful. It's truly impressive how MercurySteam managed to make Samus feel so strong, and yet still create bosses that truly make her come across as the underdog.
Raven Beak has Lightning armor and Beam burst Aeion modules. Plus a limited hyperbeam.
But he is not that strong, I managed to defeat him in first try on hard mode (although I died about 15 times in normal, lol)

Fun fact: The X that infected Raven Beak was a Kraid-X, meaning the X found poor Kraid. In a way, it was Kraid's final vengeance against Raven Beak, since he and the Mawkin were the ones who captured him.

Wow. I just finished the game and I didn't even notice till you pointed it out.
Can't get enough of how Samus is personified in this game. the attitude, the shots of her eyes with determination, sometimes fear, struggle, the "dont worry... i'll end this once and for all" gave me a huge stupid smile, was so on-point & shows her confidence with a lil peek of her compassion, and then seeing her lose her shit going "AAAAAAAAA" was a damn fine treat, voice cracks included. probably my favorite iteration of her, even if her screaming was kinda funny, but still hella cool
I’m so happy seeing her characterization here after Metroid Other M. God, what a badass. My favorite of her in this game is probably when she shoots Kraid point blank in the face without a bit of hesitation
In short, she may be stoic and doesn't say much but still kind and compassionate (?) hopefully Nintendo digs deeper into her story and personality. Especially off duty
I'm waiting for a Samus Metroid suit amiibo. Would be interesting if her brother shows up and he had experiments done to him as well.

Kinda wish a bunch of backup EMMI’s flooded into the escape tunnel at the end so we could cathartically obliterate them with the Metroid beam.
I was also hoping for the SA-X. Imagine both having to escape emmis and sax:es and then at the end you obliterate them easily with the hyper beam

Logically it wouldn't happen though, the X Parasites that infected Samus and became SA-X were all destroyed when the BSL station crashed into and destroyed SR-388. And since Samus has Metroid DNA she's the only one immune to the X, so thus, unless one SA-X somehow survived, they'll never show up again.

When I first realized what was happening I thought maybe they wrote the story of this game to play along the idea of how now Metroid fans call Samus “Metroid “
The most hilarious and also terrifying thing to me is that he’s trying to let go of her or yank her off after she rips into his eye socket, but she is holding on so furiously, just like an actual Metroid. It was bordering on legitimately scary seeing her latch into something so angrily just like an actual Metroid would.
On top of that, Samus doesn’t eat the X anymore. She just outright _obliterates_ them during this form.
I can’t wait to see where the series goes after this! So much to do with this!
On top of that, the fact that Quiet Robe was able to resist the X infection… that was impressive. This opens up a lot more to what the willpower of someone can do to resist the influence of the X and just a lot of what could be done to the series’ tropes.
Or maybe the X became fully sentient and allowed quiet robe to appear again, doing as he wishes. The possibilities in this are literally endless
I feel like that's something that is missed by those who haven't played other Metroid games. The number of times you have to bomb metroids off of you throughout the series makes this ending all the more poetic and satisfying. You finally get to watch your enemy struggle to shake off an angry Metroid to no avail.

Personally, I believe it is due to the fact of the X seeing through the memories of their host. In other words, the X were practically used by Raven beak taken hostage in a cramped prison-like location. Combined with this, It can see the discussion between Quiet Robe and Samus. In conclusion, the x infesting Quiet Robe saved Samus as of mysterious means to thank her for defeating the tyrant Raven Beak.

Hearing Samus scream with rage, while digging her fingers into Raven Beak's face as she drains both him and the fortress they're on of energy is one of the most satisfying things I've seen in a videogame. It's so damn badass and cathartic.

The Metroid Suit❤️ & The Metroid Beam from Super Metroid Makes a return😎
What I really like about the Adam twist is that you immediately learn more about Raven Beak's personality. When he is described by Quiet Robe I just thought he was a generic power hungy villain. But as soon as you realize he's been speaking to you and more specifically the way he speaks to you, it shades new light into his hubris and megalomaniac complex. Definitely one of the best metroid villains and probably my favorite final fight in any metroid game.
This twist is so interesting because it's not clear excactly how much of Adam's screentime was actually RB. He seems genuinely concerned for Sam, especially early on, but then there are comments here and there that sound so out-of-character that you know something's up. Was it Big Bird the whole time, or did he simply hijack the network part way through?
@@CapnShades I think it was him the whole time mainly because Adam never referred to her as Lady once she was underground. The game made a point of him calling her that early on.
It makes a lot more sense how Adam kept reiterating how Samus was completely hopeless and could never stand a chance at facing Raven Beak, no matter how strong she became. It isn’t until the final power up (the power bomb) that he says she’s ready.
@@jordangeer8964 More so, Raven Beak wanted her to have her Metroid powers. It wasn't the Power Bomb. That was just a coincidence that we got it at the same time. What Raven Beak was after from Samus was her Metroid DNA. Whether by extracting it with an Emmi or by awakening it and then cloning an army of her.
While on my way to Itorash, I was thinking about how we hadn't seen Raven Beak at all after that intro outside of flashbacks. It could be the Sephiroth effect where his presence is so effective because you never see him, but it seems kinda disappointing. But no, turns out that even though you couldn't see him directly, he was there the entire time, manipulating everything from the shadows. He was done so well in this game, but my only problem with him is that he's seemingly gone just after one game. He was in full control of everything that happened up until the end. He lured Samus to ZDR, got her Metroid power to fully awaken and even defeated her in the final battle. He made everything work out in his favor... only for him to die immediately at the hands of the same Metroid power his entire plan revolved around. I know it's Metroid and anything can get revived whenever, but that death felt pretty final to me.

I'm starting to think both are equally dangerous (or at least in her form towards the end), she has a hyper beam which can obliterate almost anything in her path and it is long range, and she has the ability to siphon the energy of anything that gets close enough to her.
So basically she's unstoppable now.
That thing in the terminal montage animation where Samus rolls up her arm cannon to just punch Ridley is even more intimidating now
That's some serious Doom Slayer vibe right there...because the left arm is what he uses for execution attacks with the Blood Punch/Doomblade!

@@DavidUtau She absorbed the chozo so that she could escape because the suits draining power is so strong it would drain the energy off her ship and would end up dying on the planet if it wasn’t for him.

@@franciscoraya5411 As i understand... There was 2 kind of chozo, the warriors "Mawkin" and the ones with the ability to control the Metroid "Thoha".
Samus has the DNA of both tribes.
Samus was part Metroid since the Federation give her Metroid DNA to save her of the X-parasyte.
But her Metroid powers were not awakened yet, this probably by her Thoha DNA.
Apparently, the Metroid instincts were also to be hostil to the Mawkins, so the powers of Samus started to awaken since the first contact with the "Bad Chozo" Raven Beak, which is much more notable in these last scenes.
At the end, the Thoha "Good Chozo" Quiet Robe, was infected by the X-parasyte, but keeping his memories, wanted to control the Metroid evolution of Samus with his Thoha ability, and sacrifice himself to do it.

The fact that Raven Beak jacked ADAM so that his guidance led Samus into fighting him is really interesting. He completely isolated her without her even knowing

@@Rundas045 I noticed from the start that Adam stopped calling Samus 'Lady' and started calling her Samus, and I think that's meant to be your first clue something is up. Especially since in the intro he calls her Lady like 3 times, and then never again.

Yeah *Adam* goes from "treat our lost assets with care, Lady" on the ship to "Samus Aran" on the planet. It's so informal that it's not Adam at all once Samus lands on the planet. It's always been Raven Beak since she left her spaceship.
Another clue is how all of Adam's advice and clues are either things already told to the player, things we just figured out on our own, or information Samus would have known about. Most likely they were just there to distract from the fact he was copying Samus DNA

I haven't had a boss fight feel this much like an actual final boss fight in a looong time. Like it's hard, but it doesn't feel unfair.
I know right? In most other games you can afford to tank certain attacks from the bosses, here every single one can be dodged and will punish you hard if you don't.
...except that combination of homing projectile and beam that covers 95% of the screen. That one is kinda bullshit :/

I felt it sometimes kinda unbalanced BUT definitely very rewarding at the end.
The X that infected Quiet Robe has all his memories and understanding of his own DNA, thus also understanding that his Thoha DNA would suppress Samus' Metroid nature. It is not necessarily an act of good will, but serving the X's interest to power down Samus and reduce her Metroid nature. That is my favoured interpretation, though it is clearly intentionally vague.
The odd thing about that is that leaving her as she was, would mean she'd be unable to escape, therefore she'd die. He saved her life. So Quiet Robe may have had a bit more influence over the X than most people would think. By the end of the game, that is. It would have taken that long for the consciousness to fully replicate itself, with all the memories intact.
@@SomaCruztheDemigodofBalance I like to think that after taking him over, the X realized that it's own species was inherently a horrible thing for the universe, so it decided to end itself so that the universe could be at peace.
@@SomaCruztheDemigodofBalance In the past in Fusion, we have seen that X are willing to sacrifice itself for the sake of X in other planets, as the Scientist-X wanted to self destruct the whole BSL to kill the biggest threats to the X, Samus and the Metroids, to save the X on the planet’s surface. If Quiet Robe-X was willing to sacrifice itself for the X’s cause and not because Chozo was in control that would mean one of two things: Either both the X and Quiet Robe didn’t realize that the X on SR388 were killed and they were trying to help the surviving ones who were actually dead, or that they are aware that X still exist on other planets out there that Samus isn’t aware of.

I absolutely loved Raven Beak as a villain. The power and intensity of his moves was awesome.
Agreed. My one nitpick is that he presumably dies at the end of this. I would have loved to see him return in some capacity.
The beauty of it was THIS was the true SA-X fight. Samus vs. Samus. The rest of the game threw me off a bit, but the movement implemented and ending honest to god made the 19-year wait worth it, just for MercurySteam to have hit a home run.

With Metroid's tendency to revive iconic enemies (sometimes with zero explanation like with Kraid in this game), I think it's very possible for him to come back and be the first villain to survive an X infection. If that happens, we might even get him in Smash 6.

I wonder if the series is going to focus on the still living Chozo now, since it's apparently going to finally stop being"Guess what? This was such a great final boss, and the ending cutscene is excellent. Somehow the feral screaming when Samus goes full Metroid is even better given that she's spent the rest of the game silent, calm and collected.
Just an excellent game all around.

@@Tamarocker88 Respectable but I disagree, even the most estoic characters have a breaking point, Samus basically died and reawakened with a rush of Metroid power going through her body, also the effort of holding onto an extremely powerful warrior and not letting go for an extended period of time, for the sheer amount of effort and the rush of the moment I personally find it not only justified but fitting to scream
I would have hoped that we would fight Raven beak be one more time when he got infected by the X parasite instead we just shoot him in the face and he died it would be cool if it was another boss
I loved Raven Beak as a villain. Even though he's only seen a few times, what's there is really great. If you can make a villain as badass as Samus, you're doing something right.
With the reveal of Adam being Raven Beak all along really tells us that he had the stage set from the beginning, the bosses played their part and activated Samus's Metroid DNA over time and the final showdown when Raven Beak had too much confidence in his abilities.

He is not a villain, he is THE villain. He is the cause of the entire series to happen. He prevented the Thoha from destroying planet SR388, which means that both Metroids and X Parasites survived. Which led in turn to the Federation capturing a Metroid and the Pirates later stealing it from them. Which led the Pirates to Zebes.
@@dryalga4000 I love his role so much. He’s THE villain but he’s not necessarily a mastermind and he doesn’t undermine the role of past villains. He doesn’t even really seem that smart, he had Quiet do most of the thinking. He sets everything in motion and does his own thing in the background for 4 games until one of his warriors turns out to be X. I love how we’ve tasted the power of Chozo tech in every Metroid, and we finally meet a Chozo but he’s far gone and DRUNK on the same power. What a fun story, I love it so so much

I know what you mean like Samus has never fought a Chozo before including one that revealed that he's Samus' adoptive father of the warrior tribe of the Chozo race and that's a surprise for me too.

Oh yeah!! What I loved about Dread is that previous Metroid games were focusing Samus' power progression on her firepower. Dread focuses on her movements and agility, making the boss fights much more intense and skill-based! It's not just "pump that thing full of super missiles", anymore.

of note: Samus's Hyper Beam in the Raven Beak-X portion is shown to be capable of fully destroying X Parasites. The only other things that have been shown to do so are: Metroids (and Samus after gaining Metroid juice), and cataclysmic explosions (BSL's metroid cookpot detaching and falling to the planet, and the BSL itself doing the same); Power Bombs, Screw Attack, Super Missiles? all do nothing, but that beam just eviscerated it like it was nothing.
Samus’s beam seemed like pure Metroid energy so it makes sense.
@@solomon9655 I don't think it's Metroid energy, but it might be on the same line of thought. Both the Hyper Beam and Metroid were Chozo technology, and the Metroids were originally designed solely to counter the X. They might have created the Hyper Beam so they would have a weapon to mass kill the X without having to release Metroids every single time.

I love the fact that even after being turned I to a giant monstrous X, you can still hear Raven Beak saying "power is everything" (in Chozo ofc) at 11:04. They really nailed the characterisation in this game.

In Super Metroid there's a dead body near Kraid's room, it resembles a Mawkin Chozo Soldier. It seems that Raven Beak may have sent his soldiers to Zebes during the events of Super Metroid. They found the defeated Kraid and took it to their homeworld before Zebes explosion.

Technically her father (besides Rodney Aran of course) is Grey Voice. He was the Thoha Chozo that gave his DNA to Samus to be able to survive on planet Zebes. But Old Bird was definetely her Daddy.

People wondering how the X parasite returned her to normal, Follow this: Samus has a balance of Thoha and Mawkin genes. Raven Beak says "Thoha tribe could control Metroids, whilst Mawkin were seen as enemies". Raven Beak's Mawkin genes spurred the Metroid rage inside Samus which is how she fought back, and then Quiet Robe suppressed them again with his genes. The X parasite simply allowed Quiet Robe to pass his power on- the question is how he was able to suppress the X's parasitic abilities to retain his own will. Power of the Chozo, I guess.
Alternatively, it could have been intentional on the X's part. A theory on why the SA-X allowed itself to be absorbed by Samus at the end of Fusion is that it was the only way for its "survival" (albeit absorbed by Samus). The Quiet Robe X may have seen it's only chance for its species survival was to let Samus absorb it.
1) If Quiet Robe X knew ZDR was about to explode, it might have similar intentions
2) Even if Quiet Robe *didn't* know ZDR was going to explode, Samus was a Metroid at that point, and by absorbing the Quiet Robe X, she would not have the Omega Beam anymore, which was the only way to fully destroy the X

He propably knew he would be posessed by X, so he made genetic changes to himself to make his genes and memories (both of which X can assimilate) overwrite the will of that X who posessed him.

X can copy memories iirc, so who's to say it didn't just copy enough of them to effectively be the same person

I think one of the few things I kinda dislike about Dread is that Raven Beak & the Mawkin are seemingly dealt w/ after just one game. Raven seems like such a fun villain & the Chozo being antagonistic & having complex motives is an idea with SO MUCH potential. Plus we've needed a new antagonistic force in Metroid since the Pirates have been beat to hell at this point.
Sakamoto did say that at Dread's ending we would have a small idea of where the story could go & I think it's probable now that Samus herself will be hunted by many different factions since she's the last Metroid. I hope some of them are other Chozo tribes.
Not to mention Raven Beak himself is a one dimensional pure evil villain with very little depth to him.

If you want a good example of a well written pure evil villain well most incarnations of The Joker for example are very well written possibly in part due to some of his lines and actions being genuinely funny despite his heinousness.

You know, since Dark Samus was just a metroid in a power suit, I'd expect a full metroid-y Samus to look a lot like that.
Dark samus only had the shell phazon formed over the gravity suit, while this propably was metroid tissue grown over the gravity suit, it was not hollow and there was no phazon involved, since it was wiped from existence in Prime 3.

Best final boss fight in the series. I didn't even realise you could destroy the artificial sun in the fourth phase, genuinely thought you were expected to dodge the projectile waves as well as everything Raven Beak was throwing at you. Great boss.
The sun and the black balls are both immediately destroyed with power bombs. So there's a good reason to collect power bombs before the last fight.

nah fuck the final boss. complete horseshit. I hate how the world exploration is so straightforward and made for babies but the boss fights are bullet hells that take at least 10 attempts each
This is Game Of The Year in my opinion. Literally nothing about this game is flawed. Perfect amount of challenge, satisfying gameplay, epic cutscenes. This game is honestly near perfection. Top 5 favorites of all time for sure.
I wouldn't call it flawless, but it is an absolute banger. Totally worth the 19 year wait from Fusion and multiple unofficial cancellations.

Ngl the whole twist with her being a Metroid makes me realise her stealing the powers of the bosses makes sense now. It’d be cool if she could do that stuff to like, regualr enemies for a bit aswell like Kirby’s copy ability but it only lasts for a few attacks

An X parasite travelled all the way down to the bottom left of the map, infected Kraid, returned to it's normal form, then killed Berdly right then and there, then tried to kill the one person responsible for doming him in the first place.

I absolutely love MercurySteams Power Suit Variants. Compared to Other M where we got the Varia suit with a purple glow the Gravity Suit in Dread and Samus Returns is so amazing. And then to top it off they add a new suit which is even better. Bravo MercurySteam.

Man, the fact that we got the Other M Varia Suit design but not this guy in Smash Ultimate is among the great tragedies of our time. If only Dread had come to us a little sooner.

The second phase where he's flying feels like a reskinned Ridley fight in a good way.
The ending is so sudden. What was up with that Silent Cloak X? Did his memories make the X want to help her? It had such a sad smile before it let itself be absorbed by Samus. I guess those memories came with some powerful emotions. I guess we'll have to wait until the next game before we get to know what happened right there. Hopefully we don't have to wait another 19 years. :')
He had the ability to control the Metroid species, he appears to have not been fully taken over by the X-Parasite, when he fused with Samus I'm guessing she gained his ability to have some amount of control over the Metroid species and was able to revert back to her normal form (or more normal at least). The implication there would be that she would have the ability to activate that Metroid form at will after these events, but who knows.
Quiet Robe was of the clan that could control metroids, and the natural predator to the X, so it’s believed Quiets DNA overcame the parasites control, which is why the X that came from him and went into Samus changed her back to normal. Raven Beaks DNA provoked the metroid genes inside her cuz he was of the Chozo Warrior clan, the metroids nemesis, so the closer he was physically to her the faster her tranformation, hence why she went postal and annihilated him.
Since Quiet Robe was a Thoha, absorbing his genes probably fully suppressed the Metroid genes. Keep in mind that the Thoha genes she had given to her as a child were enough to slow herself becoming a Metroid
It is entirely in the X's interest to revert Samus back to her normal form, since this Super Saiyan Metroid thing is certainly a problem for them. The scene is clearly intentionally vague for interpretation though.

for me, RB fight is perfect balance in gameplay and sequence, such a great work from MercurySteam.
This fight is hard as fuck, Idk what the hell you guys are all smoking. I've steamrolled this entire game and hit an absolute brick wall with RB. I know you know he's way too hard.
@@holleringsmith3837 He's definitely difficult, but once you get his patterns down you can beat him without losing health. I personally found him easier than other bosses like Kraid or Flappy Bird wannabe once I got the patterns down.
Make sure to use the flash shift and space jump liberally to avoid his melees and close the distance when he does his "Star Wars Movie Poster" pose.

I love this ending so much, both because of how powerful and badass it is and because of the implications for the rest of the series.
Now that Samus is a full-on metroid, will the galactic federation start hunting her? What if they're right to do so? What if her motivations are corrupt thanks to the awakened metroid DNA? The way she leapt at Raven Beak at 8:25 and desperately held out her hand when he grabbed her seems like more than an attempt to defeat him, it seems like a biological urge to drain his energy.
The next Metroid game is going to be very interesting.
Raven Beak is also a Mawkin which the game establishes that it puts the Metroid into a killer instinct state. Also Samus was also on the brink of being, at best, unconscious. I like the idea that part of that desperate attack was instincts and biology at work though. I'm definitely excited for the next game.
A shame they offed Raven beak so abruptly, he was the first new Metroid big bad that really worked. Makes me wonder who’s going to hunt Samus after (fingers crossed the Chozo survived somehow)
I really hope they make a game that takes place right after Dread, not a game with its own plot standing alone
You know it's funny, I had my suspicions over Adam since the beginning of this game and I am glad I called it.....
But you wanna know why?.....it's because Adam stopped referring to Samus as "Lady".... When Samus was inside her ship he still referred to her as Lady, but as soon as she accessed Adam on ZDR that was it.....
Remember that in fusion he would always end his briefings with "any objections lady?" If Raven Beak was able to control the EMMI'S since the very beginning, whose to say he wouldn't be able to do the same to Adam?..... Samus found out a little too late, hacked Adam was just guiding her to become stronger.....
The way that he doesn’t even flinch upon tearing off his own wing is genuinely more terrifying than any E.M.M.I. encounter I had in this game
Who else noticed that this is Kraid's model at the end? So that X is the one that found Kraid's molten corpse?
What a cool fucking villain. Shame we’ll probably only see him this once but that makes him even better.

@@C_XVR I don't think additional help from the X-cure counts as another time. Otherwise Fusion would make that counter explode so many times over.
This boss is so cool, and its so much fun to find out his patterns. I just wish there were more bosses like him in the game because its genuinely one of if not the best bosses in metroid
