I had just bought the first car, hadn't even paid the first payment. 9 days after accident I had, I went back to the dealer that sold me the first car and with no down payment, I was able to get another vehicle. But now Geico is threatening to let me go if I don't let door dashing go.
It cones as a shock actually. It seems that if door dash, Lyft, uber and all the other delivery service that hire independent contractors go as a full company, then how would that be Okay? Wouldn't it be the same thing? Would the Insurance conpanies do it differently? Who would be responsible for our insurance then? Would it be us? Or the company we worked for? What about all the Pizza joints that have delivery service? How do they do it? The employee drives their own vehicle... I think all these vehicle insurance companies who say they won't insure anyone that is a people or food delivery person is not doing a good thing at all. I just don't know what to do. Though, I have cut back on my driving to only work 4 hours a day. If they make me quit door dash, then my car goes back to the dealer. That's all there is to it.

Great vid, but still have a few questions. If you rent a car from Hertz to do doordash, do you need to purchase additional insurance from a company because you'll be conducting business in the car? Does Hertz take your doordash use into account when you rent from them, or do you rent from hertz through doordash? Or are you just doing a typical car rental on your own, but using the car for doordash?

thanks for the very useful info here ... fact however is, if i'm not mistaken, Hertz no longer rents cars for long term to Doordash drivers ... or at least, not all of their outlets do that anymore ... (do they?) and their rates now (2 years after this video was published here) are also higher ...
another fact: a monthly payment of around $500 for buying a car (preferably new, or not too old at least) is about $20 / day, give or take ... while if we pay an average of @200 / week for a rental car, then it's going to cost about 50% or more, higher ...
of course, as mentioned here in this video, most if not all extra expenses to do with a rental car is covered by the rental company, while we'd have to pay for the expenses of our own car ourselves ... but since working for Doordash is a contract / self-employed job, then we can get deductions on the tax we pay at the end of the year ...
there are other pros and cons to this already very well talked about in the video, but one important thing that Doordash Driver has hinted at is the fact that if we don't have good credit, then it's unlikely we could qualify for buying a car from a reputable dealership ... so, ...
but the fact of the matter is, car rental companies rarely provide us with the type of car we want, let alone specific year/models of a the brands we prefer ... and even if they do, as said in this video too, it's unlikely we can keep it 'forever' ...
the above are both a bad as well as a good thing of course ... but what someone like me is after, is a hybrid or maybe even a full-electric small car ... do rental companies provide us with one of those kinds? and if they do, would they let us keep renting that (or a similar) one all the time?
once a few years ago, while working for Doordash, i did manage to rent a hybrid from a rental car company ... i wasn't supposed to pay for it because the guy who hit my own car was responsible for the costs ... but the hybrid car, (which was also too long and big for Doordash-ing btw!) although relatively new and fine with a great GPS system, also suffered from technical issues: whenever the car switched from the gas engine to the electric motor, the car shook noticeably and always gave me the feeling that something really bad and serious might happen! when i confronted the rental car company, i was treated rudely!
    so, ...

glad you included that stuff at the end. Its so easy to get turned into a problem real quick. paying 1000 bucks a month for a car payment is massive and like you said you need to be making about 1000 a week to really make it worth it.
When I tried doing this, every car I got was "new" but its worth a mention at least in my area, every car was not what you'd expect from a rental car company, its like all the cars that have too many miles to get rented out anymore. The one I had the longest already had 80k miles on it and the inside was in rough shape, and it was only a model year old, or 2 actual years old.

Way too much. Flywheels and clutches are about $200 in parts, starter is $60 to $80 with core charge, and oil change is $25. The labor time to do the starter is less than an hour and the clutch is about 3 to 4 hours. Your job should have cost you about $600 to $700 at most. You need to buy parts from Advance Auto Parts online with 20% discount and then find a local garage mechanic that can be trusted to work on your car. Usually garage mechanics charge $50 per hour labor whereas professionals will charge you $100 per hour. Finding a garage mechanic and buying your own parts will save you many hundreds of Dollars every year on repairs.

For me renting a car, if I have the spare money, benefits me using for uber x, eats and doordash. In addition I'd use it for long distance travel. Having to drive out of town every weekend for travel soccer, it's nice knowing I'm not responsible for the maintenance

Has the doordash dasher app been doing strange things the past 2 days for anyone else? Or is it just the North TX area? App dropped a double order that my husband had yesterday he got to the restaurant & the delivery had just disappeared. Similar thing with me today where I accepted a delivery got directions was headed that way & got notified that I missed a delivery opportunity & my order had dropped. My completion rate took a hit. Called door dash they said the order was canceled on the customer end but tbat shouldn't have dropped my completion rate 🤔

Don’t do rentals because of the tax problem. You can’t claim the mileage deductible on a rental because thats only for personal vehicles. So if you do the math, it does not make sense financially to pay $1k a month for a rental then twice as much in taxes due to not being able to claim the mileage deductible. You’re better off buying a $10k car every year, in that case at least you can claim the mileage deductible and claim the cost of the entire car as a deductible as well, you’ll save thousands taking that route.

So this is a added information for anyone say you rent a car from a rental place you pay the 200 and something plus the damage liability which then comes out to say $400 and something ...( I think it’s $25 a day for the damage liability) I am renting now from a rental place omg it’s good and bad soooo like he said you must and I repeat you MUST budget that car rental in so I have to make at least 800 and something or 1000 to be comfortable ... gas for your car rental and other grown people bills 💸

Want maintenance free and much cheaper? Go buy a used 2017 Chevy Bolt for 15-18k on a 5 year note for ~330 a month if you have good credit. No more maintenance on a vehicle and no gas either. A full charge of 240 miles, 0-60 in about 6 seconds, and every 1,000 miles comes out to about $20 in electricity. For $200 a week that is the same as paying a note on a 40k car.

@@michaelhuebner6843 - Depends on the car and your resources. All I drive are Geo Metros. Can still get many of the parts for them, the engine can be rebuilt with it still in the car without having to remove it or lifted out by hand since they are light enough, no special dealer level tools required, great on gas, and tasks that take all day on a modern vehicle can be done in a few hours on them because they were built before the age of engineered obsolescence run amok. You can change your own oil on them and don't even need to jack the car up to do it. Has a simple spin on can oil filter right on the front of the engine you can easily reach.
I'm not a dasher but if I was I'd be using Metros exclusively. When the engine or transmission gave out on one of them, I'd sideline it and use another one until I had the time to fix it and just rotate between them.
Cost of fuel, maintenance, insurance, and tires would be absolutely rock bottom. You can't possibly get any cheaper than that and they will run for hundreds of thousands of miles if you take care of them.
Key is being able to maintain them yourself or have a good friend that can help. They're probably the easiest car to work on you can still find on the roads today made in the last 25 years.
