I was towing a new enclosed trailer with my 97 k1500 last evening. Smaller 6x12. 15 minutes in I smelled something hot, cel came on and I pulled over. Was the 1870 code and I think one misfire & o2 sensor. ATF was everywhere dumping underneath but couldn’t tell from where. Now I’m investigating as I limped it to a gas station, my buddy towed my trailer and I made it 45 min back home driving normal. I had to put 3 quarts in at the gas station and it didn’t leak at all after. I’m wondering if the trans got hot, slipped and line pressures caused it to blow out. Found your video and see my truck doesn’t have the update. I’ve been having harsh 1-2, 2-3 up shifts but only when cold. If I restarted after driving awhile, it would return to normal. Fingers crossed this is it
We had a friend's Dodge do that while pulling trailers it was actually getting hot and puking out of the vent tube only while pulling heavy trailers it was a 4x4 the Overflow was actually on the transfer case which he was in two-wheel drive

Hi I have a 1997 Tahoe. It has the same shifting problem. I was going to do the jumper wire update but the J-1 blue connector already has a cable? Although I noticed that the service number on the computer is not the updated VCM.
I’m curious about something, I have a 97 k1500 with harsh 1-2 & 2-3 shifts. Replaced the accumulator and is better but still seems to intermittently shift a little rough. I’m looking into this ground upgrade wire but according to the TSB, the only years effected were 1996 and the repair started after 2/14/96. It states that the corrected VCMs have the 16244210 number which mine does not have but I would assume that would be for the 1996s post repair. Then in 1997 they had new and corrected VCMs wiring. I guess my question is, how do I know for sure if the 1997 models are still effected or not?
According to the bulletin they are not. You can measure the resistance of the solenoids to see if they are out of spec and replace as needed. That's what I would do if I were you boss
What year did they correct the problem ? I have a '99 K1500 Suburban. The numbers are not what's in your vid. The connectors look different too. Truck has 180k on the original 4L60E. Thoughts ?
I was having problems shifting 1-2 (hard shift) on my 96 c1500 and I updated the wiring and it shifts perfect,👍 thanks again for this information. I hope this could help someone out.
Great video but i have a question. I had a 4l60e transmission built that installed in my vehicle. It goes in reverse and forward but seems like it takes off in 2nd gear and will not shift out at all. Will the vcm be that problem aswell??
I need help for . My 96 caprice. I have no restrictions tune, 8k rpm etc. Stock trans. Lines and fluids OK. The trans goes in to reverse. Some times the trans go in to d after I play with shift it and disconnect the battery. Then back to that mode.
I just replaced my busted radiator 2 weeks ago and now my truck will not go forward or in 3rd or 2nd or 1st not even in 4 wheel drive but it will move in reverse. What am I dilling with now.
I have a 1998 is the VCM issue still prevalent? I have a p1870 threw in a tcc valve oversized o rings didn’t help any so I replaced the solenoids didn’t help, then I just gave up, maybe the wiring issue, also maybe could do a mod to help this any?
I also was told that the speed sensor or oxygen sensor might do that too so like I said I change the oxygen sensor and I replace the speed sensor and still no overdrive
@@YLegalRacing hard to go down any road without a functional transmission. Sorry you experienced that. My 4l60 in awd safari is probably on its way out but I changed fluid filter and solenoids but still revs to nowhere when it tries to downshift. Hoping it’s a torque converter clutch or lockup solenoid it does seem like it could be something electrical, but that’s hopeful. Skeptical of sending it to a trans shop
I just bought it and owner said he put a transmission in cuz 3rd went in and put another one in drove and shifted perfectly normal and just randomly quick

I have a 97 tahoe 4wd with the 4l60e and had the transmission rebuilt ($1,500...yea I know) but transmission still wasn't fixed, so I took it back and supposedly they rebuilt it again, and wouldn't ya know as soon as warranty expired it started slipping between 1st and 2nd AGAIN.

Do you happen to know where the vcm is located on a 1998 gmc sanoma, just replaced the trans and it’s throwing up a p0748 code and it’s not running thru the gears
Ey man i little help I have a 2000 gmc sierra I bought and previous owner replaced engine and transmission from a suburban 4l60e the transmission it came with just didn’t shift at all and was stalling hard replaced transmission and problem still pretty much almos the is shifting at high rpm and don’t go to third sometimes just don’t run at all , turn the engine off and on and start working again for a few more miles I would accept any advice please thanks!
If he replaced it with a used unit it's a toss up right there. You can't tell the condition of used units. Also, it's possible that when they replaced it they didn't blow out the cooler lines. That can cause metal to reenter the replaced transmission and cause premature failure again.
Yes he replaced it with used transmission and engine from a close year suburban but I mean I just feel it may be the transmission and replaced it with a rebuilt and still the same but im afraid of replacing it again and have the same problem
Ok your wording is off, so a new rebuilt unit was installed?? If so incorrect fluid, shade tree shops, improper install can all be factors. A rebuilt one usually go for 1200-1600ish

Thanks!!! Had a customer with a similar problem and after he got a rebuild he never had the issue again. Not many things in the 4l60e that can be fixed individually. Either of works or if doesn't
Just saw this in a customer's 99 Corvette ended up being a Miss adjusted neutral safety switch wouldn't always throw a code for the switch problem but when he was acting up as soon as you put it in reverse it would shut off readjusting a neutral safety switch on the transmission fixed all the issues
Hey man, thanks for the info. I have a 94’ k1500 and I’m on my third transmission in about 5 years.. last time I lost 3rd and 4th gear, now this time it’s slipping randomly in 1st and reverse. @@YLegalRacing Transmisson has been rebuilt a few months ago or so the mechanic claims but when the check engine light comes on, the shift solenoids codes come up and someone said the ignition switch can cause that. I don't know, this has been a headache. I was also told that the 4l60 came from the factory with a little slippage, basically they were designed like that and that you have to take it easy on the gas but when my transmission was first rebuilt 10 years ago, I don't know what that guy did but my truck felt like a sports car kinda like permanently being in tow/haul mode and no slippage. I wanted to take it back to that guy but couldn't find his shop so I went to someone new. Thanks for your help.
Hey question would this help the problem to my 1996 chevy 1500 my problem is that on al the gears like drive and reverse it won’t go it just stays it’s like if it’s in neutral for all gears would this fix the problem???
I have a 2003 Chevy s10 with the 4.3 and there was alot of rust in the radiator so I replace the radiator and one year later tranny started slip a little so I just replaced the tranny fluid and filter also put Lucas trans slip to see how it goes. The new radiator I purchased when I bought the truck now has some rust , I didn’t think of blowing out the lines with compressed air. Any other tips will help me . Thank you
Gotta run a solvent or straight up soap in your cooling system for a bit to flush out all your rust. You probably got build up everywhere. I'd run a cleaner through it a few times then add coolant when your done
On my 96 suburban my vcm service # is 16244210 which is supposed to be the corrected vcm so i should be good correct? Or do i still need to do this? Truck was produced 05/96'
I've done a transmission flush on it what's the proper amount of transmission fluid in it I did the transmission filter and a 2-3 shift solenoid I also did the exhaust oxygen sensor included now and then the temperature gauge will drop to zero and the speedometer dropped to zero like it has a bad ground but it will continue to drive first and second gear are really good the clutches definitely grab and both gears and I have reverse all I'm getting on the code reader is a p1886 I have no idea but if you could help it would be appreciated thanks
Ive got a 99 tahoe 4L60e has a code P0785, running in OD it seems stuck in 3rd no down shifts, no OD. I can place it in 2Nd gear and then I can shift up to 3rd, but it won't shift back down to 2nd..seem to never see 1st or 4th gear. Any thoughts?
So on my old transmission I would turn off the truck and then turn it on and it would go forward and after a couple seconds it’s like if it was in neutral and now I replaced it with a new transmission and it was shifting hood everything was ok and now it’s doing the same thing which is making me think that my other transmission is still good I literally just finished changing the transmission any idea of what it could be?

ok so i have a 99 suburban and when i put it in drive it just revs up no pull it only pulls in rev 1st and second. i broke the spider gears in rear end and replaced and now it has this issue. first i thought it was shift linkage needed adjustment cause for some reason the guy unhooked it to change spider gears idk i need help... ?????

Why didn't you leave the transmission cooler connected to the lines and use a can of kooler kleen to flush it out? Air isn't enough, also you want to clean the inside of the cooler aswell it'll hold alot of gunk
I have a 2005 Chevy Silverado 1500 4x4 and the transmission was rebuilt in 2018 by AAMCO, the the original owner now I have it for 2 years and it just started leaking at the servo cover?? I’m looking into this ground upgrade wire but according to the TSB, the only years effected were 1996 and the repair started after 2/14/96. It states that the corrected VCMs have the 16244210 number which mine does not have but I would assume that would be for the 1996s post repair. Then in 1997 they had new and corrected VCMs wiring. I guess my question is, how do I know for sure if the 1997 models are still effected or not?
According to the bulletin they are not. You can measure the resistance of the solenoids to see if they are out of spec and replace as needed. That's what I would do if I were you boss
@@YLegalRacing got it thank you for the quick reply! I will check it out!

What year did they correct the problem ?
I have a '99 K1500 Suburban. The numbers are not what's in your vid. The connectors look different too.
Truck has 180k on the original 4L60E.
Thoughts ?
Should be the corrected ones, bulletin came out in 96. You should be golden! 👍🏼
I was having problems shifting 1-2 (hard shift) on my 96 c1500 and I updated the wiring and it shifts perfect,👍 thanks again for this information. I hope this could help someone out.
😎 my guy glad to hear!
The hard 1-2 shift can also be caused by the 1-2 accumulator. Use a sonex pin less kit to fix it. Works great. I have four OBS trucks with the 4L60E.
Great video but i have a question. I had a 4l60e transmission built that installed in my vehicle. It goes in reverse and forward but seems like it takes off in 2nd gear and will not shift out at all. Will the vcm be that problem aswell??
Pfffffffft got me on that one buddy. Need some real diag, have you checked fluid color and codes?
I jus got a 97 tahoe and the reverse makes a god awful noice n it trys to lose power in between 55-65 but will snap outta it if i yive it some gas
Probably your rear diff making noise and maybe needs a tune up
I need help for . My 96 caprice. I have no restrictions tune, 8k rpm etc. Stock trans. Lines and fluids OK. The trans goes in to reverse. Some times the trans go in to d after I play with shift it and disconnect the battery. Then back to that mode.
Sounds like the stock trans wasn't happy about 8k rpms
Trans may be alright. Maybe a electronic issue or a tune issue..
I just replaced my busted radiator 2 weeks ago and now my truck will not go forward or in 3rd or 2nd or 1st not even in 4 wheel drive but it will move in reverse. What am I dilling with now.
Gotta make sure you fill the trans fluid, you may have been low on fluid and the radiator trans cooler emptied it enough to make the trans not happy
Is there a part number for this jumper wire?
Harbor freight
I have a 1998 is the VCM issue still prevalent? I have a p1870 threw in a tcc valve oversized o rings didn’t help any so I replaced the solenoids didn’t help, then I just gave up, maybe the wiring issue, also maybe could do a mod to help this any?
I'd say it's deeper than that, gotta have it looked at at this point.
I also was told that the speed sensor or oxygen sensor might do that too so like I said I change the oxygen sensor and I replace the speed sensor and still no overdrive
It's probably the trans, my tip here is a preventative tip, it won't fix an already shot trans
Does the VCM control the engine and the transmission? Or is it a ECM and TCM separate?
They are together. Engine and transmission control are all done in one module
@@YLegalRacingwhat's the vcm? And the TCM and ecm are the same module? In the 2005 Tahoe? These are all questions !!
I rebuild my transmission twice.drives fine for a week then just 1st and second gear work.93 chevy silverado. What could be the problem?
I have a 1997 Silverado 4x4 the transmission blew ! I had it rebuild and now the transmission is shuttering again like before it blew!
Ps. With less then 4000 miles on the rebuild
Gotta go to a reputable builder....
I had the same issue, went through 2 monster transmissions, then went 4l80e with a local builder
How did the monster trans work out
Got rid of it and never looked back.....worst decision ever
@@YLegalRacing that’s what I’ve heard thanks for spreading the word
@KollynJ I would never go down that road again
@@YLegalRacing hard to go down any road without a functional transmission. Sorry you experienced that. My 4l60 in awd safari is probably on its way out but I changed fluid filter and solenoids but still revs to nowhere when it tries to downshift. Hoping it’s a torque converter clutch or lockup solenoid it does seem like it could be something electrical, but that’s hopeful. Skeptical of sending it to a trans shop
I know this video is old but I have a question. GM said the part is discontinued, and I can’t find it on eBay. What should I do?
Do a 411 swap

I know this an old video. I have had my 4l60e rebuilt twice already and lost third gear both times within 200 miles. Could that be the problem?
Potentially! Gotta check the ecm numbers, if it's a shift flare then yes it could %100 be the issue. You'll run through transmission every time

Hi, Excellent vidio do you know if there is any interaction with the computer and 4L60E when placed in reverse my 94 C4 corvette stalls when computer is in closed loop will not repeat when computer is in open loop
That's good to know, my car doesn't have an adjustment
Hey man, thanks for the info. I have a 94’ k1500 and I’m on my third transmission in about 5 years.. last time I lost 3rd and 4th gear, now this time it’s slipping randomly in 1st and reverse. Gotta get a good trans builder is what it sounds like
My trans shifts but there's a 2-3 flare. Someone recommended getting a corvette servo. What do you think of that?
Flares are no good, check for codes, if none check fluid, if it's darker than burnt steak at a local sketch diner it's toast. Servo may fix it temporarily but it's a bandaid
You should just bypass the radiator and add another trans oil cooler
I actually did do that. It's in a later video
