I feel like the amount of work you did in just this video is more work than I've done in my entire life. I never could have figured this kind of crap out. Amazing that you can do this.
I have never had a shift solenoid fail on me and could hardly find anyone who has had this problem so I figured I would do a detailed video on it. I kinda enjoyed this fix.
How and the crap did you manage to get that much fluid out of there with the hand pump? I just went through this twice. First time I thought I had a clogged filter due to loosing 1st gear. So the second time around I just loosened the bolts to where I could tilt the pan far enough to get the hose in from the hand pump. But I found out I have a metal stop where the dipstick comes into the pan. I had the same code as you. After testing, B solenoid was totally shot. No ohm reading at all, no clicking with the 9v battery trick.
@@johnnyshell2839 I've seen this afew times in the shop you should splice in to the ground wire in the harness going to the transmission and run it to the battery ground if this solves your issues you will need to run the wire to the ground on the em and solder the connection and cover with heat shrink. Bad grounds on these 4160e units make them do things not in any manual you have ever read. 3rd gear is the give away that you have a ground issue, it's not electrial. The ground wire in the plug is pin "E" it is located to the front on the truck when the plug is in the transmission the wire is white remove the cover on the top of the plug and you will see the letters for each wire, splice into "E" and run up to the battery
You made a great video. My 2001 pathfinder got stuck in 3rd this morning when I first cranked it up drove it 5 minutes reverse worked fluid was full then I turned it off started it back and it went back to working fine
Thanks. It could still be the shift solenoid as well. Running it in reverse might have heated the fluid up around it enough to get it to start working. Either way you found a way to get it working again so you can drive it a bit more before having to service it.
@@PostalRedneck yeah I have really low idle sometimes when I start it cold if the choke doesn't come on. if adjust the throttle it's really high when the choke comes on. Maybe it just didn't have enough battery power that day. I have ran it about 3more days and had no problems.
Yeah thats good news and scary at the same time. I would be worried about getting stranded again. Im happy mine acted up where it did and when it did. I just got done doing a gambler 500 event and was all the way on the other side of the state the day before.
Finding the problem is the hard part. Getting new parts and installing them without knowing if the parts replaced were bad to begin with is not a good way to fix a vehicle.
Aw shit you were at tip of the mitt too? I thought it was absolutely awesome this year, so much more and better off road driving than the Detroit gambler. Good thing you didnt have any issues on the gambler, I had a cv joint break on my 4x4 safari van (I had the "stock" height one, i know there was a guy with a lifted astro, wish I would have gotten the chance to talk to him.) But the cv wasnt completely broken apart so I drove it 300 miles back home with the cv sounding like a meat grinder, hell I'm still driving it while waiting on parts to be delivered. A trick that I did with transmissions with no drain plug is disconnect a cooler line and put a hose on it into a bucket then start the car and let the transmission pump all the fluid out into the bucket, this is best done with 2 people because that fluid can really shoot out of there
Yeah the Detroit Gambler is not that fun. I skipped it this year. Tip of the mitt is way better. I did get quite lucky that it didnt break on me during the event. I carry an extra used cv shaft as they are a week point in most off road vehicles. Glad to hear you made it home what how bad it sounds it was. I have done a few transmission flushes doing that trick with removing the cooler line and sticking it into a bucket. Its not a bad way to do it if you have hose laying around to use.
Mines feels like it’s in 3rd gear all the time when I put it in drive but if I manually shift it from 1st to 3rd it shifts do you think the solenoids could be the problem ? I have code p0758 It’s a 06 Silverado
Same thing mine was doing. I would have to say you are going to have to replace the solenoid. I would recommend doing both at once as you are already in there.
Have it scanned and if the same codes come up more than likely you have the same issue. This unfortunately is not horribly common but it does happen. One simple thing you could check to see if the plug to the trans fell off somehow. If a transmission is unplugged it will be stuck in 3rd as well. Good luck.
Truck had Park, Reverse, Neutral and 3rd. Didn't matter if you put the shifter in 1st, 2nd, 3rd or drive it would take off in 3rd gear until you got up to a fast enough speed for 4th gear then it would shift into 4th. You could drive the truck the way it was but taking off from a stop was very slow going and the truck was not happy. Im guessing if you had to stop and take off a lot you would burn up your trans quit quick but you would be fine on the highway once you got it going.
Hey awesome vid, did a ls swap into my obs and damn if its going from 1st 2nd 3rd just fine but then stays in 3rd unless I put it in reverse or park (p key off that is) other than that it stays in third. I can manually shift to 2nd but not first. Im leanin to replacing these what do u think?
Hwy i had a question mine is having this issue as well its an 07 with the 4l60 and it shifts all the way up to third gear but wont shift oast that but its not throwing any codes
My blazer is doing the same thing, same code, but wha does the 3-2 down shift solenoid have anything to do with the transmission not shifting out of 3rd and into 4th gear? I guess I'll have to replace this particular solenoid.
The 2-3 solenoid has to be powered on for 1st and 2nd gear. I guess when the computer asks for it to come on and the computer dont see it shift it puts it into limp mode and just holds 3rd. If I remember right (its been awhile) I could manually shift from 1st to 2nd and then to 3rd but could not get it to go into 4th.
Thanks for the detailed info! I keep getting the P0758 code on my 2005 Denali. I tested both the A and B solenoid and they both read around 22 ohms. I randomly lose first and fourth gear but it's not consistent and the CEL will come on and go off on its own. Sometimes I can drive a hundred miles with no issues. Other times the transmission will start acting up within 5 miles down the road. Any idea what I should look at next?
my 2001 Suburban 4x4 just today started not wanting to upshift, no SES, no codes that I can see. I've already had intermittent service 4WD, and was going to get to that, unfortunately today when I went to go see neighbor it was in 4Low, and after the offroad portion ended of my run ended and I got to pavement I noticed high rpm's, drove to Post Office trying to Isolate symptoms other than the transfer case not shifting, it was DRAMATICALLY HANGING IN GEAR BETWEEN SHIFTS, and would only upshift after coasting, but mostly hanging in 1st too long and 2nd too long, not sure if it was getting into 3rd and4th at all, kind of hard when in 4Lo. Any clues as to where I should start?
I have always noticed with my truck in 4low that the shift points all seem to drag out and dont want to shift as well some times. I would try to get it into high range and see if the problem continues. The computer has all different shift points and rpms it shifts at when in low range.
@@PostalRedneck I have the Tow/Haul package, and I was pleasantly surprised when i tried it, to feel like the good old days when we put B & M Shift kits in autos for the tighter shifting! Getting all the data needed these days to do Point to Point troubleshooting is sometimes challenging.
I would try to address the 4x4 problem first if its getting stuck in 4 low. Im not one for throwing parts at a vehicle either. If the 4x4 button is not lighting up and blinking when selecting what you want typically its the 4x4 switch that is bad. If you select a drive type and it blinks but nothing happens then its probably the 4x4 actuator motor. As for it not shifting into gears the 4L60E is a problematic transmission that has plagued the chevy community for years with weird problems. I would check the fluid and see if its dark or smells burnt. If either is the case it probably needs a good rebuild and flush.
@@PostalRedneck what would help me now is if you had the wiring pinouts for my TCCM, 4 button dash switch, and the Shift motor connectors. with that I can isolate where the electrons have encountered a hurdle to big to jump!

The main thing I would tell you to do to prolong the life of a 4L60E is to get a better trans cooler. These tend to get hot and that is what usually takes them out.
