A terrifying situation and life changing circumstances for many Greek families. My heart goes to them. They are at the pit of hell and still trying to cope and help tourists on the island. That crying German man, tearing up over not having milk for his kids is low key pathetic. The locals are losing their homes, gardens, livelihoods and he is breaking down over a little discomfort at the airport. Priorities not checked, obviously.
Agree, people here have lost everything, he can go back to his normal life in a few days, without any worries. People show no compassion. I am in rhodes for 2 months, and I know, they did everything they possibly could...
I can't really garner up a huge amount of sympathy to be honest. After a few days of discomfort in a safe place, all these people will go back to their lives having lost a few days of a holiday that is essentially a luxury and this will just be a horrible memory they look back on. I'm more concerned about those living on the island who have lost everything. Homes, cars, their business and livlihoods, all devoured by flames and there is no walking away for them. There are no repatriation flights to rescue them from their inescapable reality.

The guy has been through a traumatic incident and, while he is safe, he's still dealing with the stress of trying to get home but not being meaningfully assisted or informed. He's probably emotionally exhausted, hence the crying. This is one clip from an interview that was probably several minutes long. Let's not assume this guy is throwing himself a pity party when it's entirely possible that he's grieving for the locals as well as expressing frustration about his own situation.

Apparently, any help that the tourists got, came ONLY from the local residents: many invited as many people as they could into their homes, for something to eat and a place to sleep, until they were ready to fly back home... Athough some comments here are harsh towards the German tourist's complaints, I will agree with him, because it is a reported fact that there was no emergency mechanism implemented... ...the holiday booking agencies, the airport, the Rhodes authorities and the greek government had to take action right away.... ...about 18 thousand tourists had to flee for their lives all at once, but the fires started a couple of days ago... anybody in authority had enough time to plan, act and provide - if they could only think about it and wanted to... ...reports from the firefighters inform us that there was only one helicopter hovering the burning area that day and only up to 5:00 pm... ....there is documented proof of arson (videos and reports of arrests)... not only in Rhodes, but other parts of Greece as well... ...and not only this summer, but the previous ones... ...very sad...
People did their best to help those in need and most people appreciated those effords and where thankful for what they got. Evacuation situations are not royal service in a 5-star Hotel. He had all the arrangements for the flight back made. He had a home to go back to, a family. Why so ungrateful?
I was there in April into May - in Mitsis Village Hotel and Spa near Kiotori. I visited Lardos and Lindos. The best place Ive ever been. The people were wonderful. I will definitely go back one day. God Bless all those affected, home and tourists.

This ia awful. I am truly devastated for the people of Rodos (Rhodes) and it is great to see the Greek people helping so much. Been there many times en route to other islands. Diagoras Airport are doing their best as this is unpresedented times. Saying prayers for everyone.
They should take any flights just to get out. Hope the govt from the mainland arrive soon. The local government should develop a contingency plan and implement the next time around like storms, flooding, earthquake and wildfires. The government should invest in fire fighting machinery, airplanes.
For such fires to happen you need 2 things: an arsonist (or a dumb guy throwing his cigarette butt) AND a very dry vegetation (an arsonist would have little success on a wet vegetation !). The dry vegetation comes from recent heat and drought, hence, if you accept looking at reality, global warming (created by the excess of CO2 human activities generate).

By the way, in social media you can see and read that german tourist help the greeks with her own hands aggainst the fire with towels, waterbottles and shovel to beat the fire. Maybe its not enough, but many tourists not flee. They stay there and help. Help homowners, firefighters and hotel stuff.

I live on the west coast of Vancouver Island, and it should've rained most of the fall and into spring! It has barely rained here, and we are in a stage 5 drought! A drought in a rain forest! Global warming is a fact! You would do well to educate yourself about what's happening!

This ia awful. I am truly devastated for the people of Rodos (Rhodes) and it is great to see the Greek people helping so much. Been there many times en route to other islands. Diagoras Airport are doing their best as this is unpresedented times. Saying prayers for everyone.

Not wild fires as they have been proven to be set by people
For such fires to happen you need 2 things: an arsonist (or a dumb guy throwing his cigarette butt) AND a very dry vegetation (an arsonist would have little success on a wet vegetation !).
The dry vegetation comes from recent heat and drought, hence, if you accept looking at reality, global warming (created by the excess of CO2 human activities generate).
