- I set out to explore some more areas of the forest
Before setting up for a Tarp and Bivy Camp.
Trying a new system for the first time, NO SLEEPING BAG !
I found that the idea is sound for maybe the Spring and Autumn but I encountered a few issues with the temperature down to 2/3 degrees

Another great camp. Your videos are very relaxing to watch, and I also enjoy hearing the way Brits talk. “Mooching about” seems to mean wandering around, but here in the States “mooching” is slang for taking advantage of people and getting their goods for free. 😃 I also didn’t realize you had Uncle Ben’s rice over there. I slept out at -11’c in thermal underwear and new Carinthia Defence 4 bag. In a tent. Was plenty warm enough. No hat, gloves or socks.
Great experiment my concern would be condensation in the Bivi
I know you said none, but wet down loses all insulation.

I didn’t suffer any condensation, the worry could be, if I did the down clothes would be wet and then no good for keeping me warm, it was an interesting experiment as was yours.
I may well do it again in the spring

Yes you can camp with minimal kit, I like, and choose the basic approach, but it shows people you don’t need to spend loads

Trousers are Rab Argon so very good but not as thick as the jacket, it will be a perfect set up for the spring and autumn with a lighter down jacket and for this weather with a light sleeping bag, so still weight and space saved over lugging the Ascent 1100,
in this weather I will only save 900 grams but it all helps

Hi Dave thanks for watching, yes it’s a great idea for spring and autumn when I am carrying a thinner down jacket I can add the trousers and leave the bag behind, my legs just made it last night thanks to the warmers, it was 2 degrees at its coldest

Spot on Adrian 👍, good little hidden spot that, great set up with the tarp, I was thinking about just taking my lightweight quilt out, it’s got a footbox bit, like you I wear down jacket and trousers, so already fairly warm, nice one mate, look forward to see the next one, atb Mick 👍

Hi and thanks for watching, it was an interesting test, if it wasn’t for the hand warmers I put in my trousers I would have failed ! So it’s going to be good for the spring and autumn for sure, but my next camp will be the same but with the summer sleeping bag.

Really enjoyed the video, perhaps your air mat dosent have a good R rating, so cold was coming through the mat, even with the foam mat underneath ,just a thought, good health and safe travels, cheers craig
Hi and thanks for watching, true my mat is the 3r not the 5r version but it’s fine with a sleeping bag, this test was to replace the bag with down clothes, it was interesting to say the least but will try again in warmer weather and certainly in the cold with a lighter bag

Very interesting. Maybe a elephants foot (half length) sleeping bag or down trousers with more down? Which down trousers are you using?

Hi Graham, glad you enjoyed it, I also found the ruins of a hillside house, hence Damian’s interest, yes good experience was had, but I now know it’s for spring and autumn !!!! It was hard to warm the legs up !!!!

I wonder if some insulated gaiters would have solved the problem around your ankles?
Hi and thanks for watching, good thought I had clean gaiters as well ! I will be using this method in the spring and autumn, and again in the cold but with a lighter sleeping bag still saving weight, so it was an interesting test

I always try to use my warm clothing as part of my sleep system adrian. as you know our sleeping bags should be rated so we can sleep in it with no clothing on.ive never done it lol.my mate used to.
Hi and thanks for watching, I have been lucky then as I only wear thermal top and bottoms, in a sleeping bag, mind the Rab 1100 is really good, but as you say the ratings !!! I would say my Rab 400 good for +5 up and the 1100 down to -3/5 max
So looking forwards to trying just clothes in the spring

Looks so close to our landscape in northern New England! Tarps are the only way to go. I have to burn wood when I get out, its a fault of mine! So small chairs for me (at 61 yrs old & 6'4"/76cm) makes it a pain feeding wood but what can ya do??

Hi from the uk, that’s a managed forest, we are lucky to have it just up the road, my nearest hills are the Cheviots, barren and windy , I will be back soon, just enjoying the forest before the midges !!

Thinking outside the box 👍. Can I ask how you like the dd 2x2 compared to the 3x3?
Hi and thanks for watching, with my style of bivy camping it’s much better as I can pitch it at 45 degrees and sleep under it with just the leg end out of the tarp, easier to set up if it’s windy, it’s just a shame it’s not a super light version, the super light tarp s is 2.8 x 1.5 so can’t get under as good and the 2.8 is a bit long

@@northumberlandmountainhopper thank you for the response, I didn’t even realise a 2x2 was a dd option!, in all the years it’s the first I’ve come across it. Would love to see a video with you comparing the tarps you have including the magic carpets. I can see the benefits of a 2x2 for sure as the 3x3 can sometimes be on the larger size depending on the purpose it’s being used for 👍

@@northumberlandmountainhopper Hi Adrian, I need to wander in a bit further and see the sheepfold with a stone structure inside. Might have been where the shepherd slept?.. I wonder what I'd find with a metal detector?.. there are a few ruins dotted around the forest in various states of decay. Stay safe and warm, ATB.
