Ice Lake, Silverton, Colorado. Ice Lake Trail.

  • Ice Lake has to be one of the most spectacular destinations for the hiker that wants an experience to remember. The hike takes you through the forest and crosses some beautiful streams and cascades. The high alpine meadows full of wildflowers is another big benefit for those interested in photography. However there is little that can compare to the final destination of Ice Lake. If you are looking for a fantastic setting at the end of the rainbow this is it.
I think it might be wise to be prepared and go prepared for this walk. It is difficult and strenuous. The steep sections are just below and then above Lower Ice Lake Basin. The weather can move in from a direction where it may not be seen until it is on top of you, be ready for it. When we went the flies were horrible.
All in all this is one of the best hikes I have ever done, it made me think of Cananda.

@I love Crosby It depends on how many stops for views, pics, and food. But 6 or 7 hours is a good planning factor. I also always do the connection trail from Ice Lake over to Island Lake when I go up there. It is about 25 min over to Island Lake. And from Island Lake, there is it's own trail that heads downhill and eventually connects to the Ice Lake trail that you had walked up. That is a great option as that trail is not near as crowded as the Ice Lake trail. Also, I recommend you do Ice Lake , then Island Lake. When you are looking at a map, that trail that goes to Island Lake first is a continuous climb. At least when you go to Ice Lake first, the trail plateaus off every now and then, providing a short recovery time.

    • @campingalan
      @campingalan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@I love Crosby and one other thing....if you make it over to Island Lake, there is also an option to climb Swamp Grant Pass (just about any pic of Island Lake on the internet shows a reddish scree wall to the right side of the island. And on that scree wall you can see a trail that rises from right to left. That is Swamp Grant Pass). That trail is on the Hardrock 100 course. Up on the pass is a plaque remembering Joel Zucker. Joel had finished the Hardrock 100 some years ago and passed away shortly after. Also up there, the views are fabulous. That Swamp Grant Pass addition will add about an hour to your day.

I live part time in Ouray (just north of here) and have been to Ice Lake many times, and have camped along Mineral Creek rd. I must say I've not encountered issues with flies or any kind of bug around here. If you make it to Ice Lake its work the extra distance to hike around the ridge to Island Lake or a little past Ice Lake to Fuller Lake. On a good year the wild flowers in Ice Lake Basin are as good as it gets anywhere..

    Dana,
Thank you for sharing your video. It was truly inspiring to watch.
It reminded me of my youth when I trekked most of the Long Trail in Vermont and many hikes along the Appalachian trails in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
It also inspired me to a point where I think I may have a few hike left in me. Not exactly sure where or when that will occur, however I need to go on record as saying it is at least 30 lbs. away!
So, first things first. It appears that writing this comment, I have set a goal to lose that weight in a public forum. Because of who I am, I will need to make it happen.
It has to be one step at a time, just like every trail that I have ever hiked has taught me.
If the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step, I must extend my sincere thank you to you for getting me started. At least today I am thanking you. Tomorrow I may be cursing you, but that will simply be a temporary set back.
Commitment to keeping oneself moving forward with a positive attitude is it the ultimate reward for taking the risk. And life is about taking risks.
The End of the Trail is ahead, but I do not yet see it. Thanks for getting me back on track.

Hi Bob. Thank you for the note. I am turning 62 this month and time is flying. In truth my videos do not show the aftermath or the pain during these little trips. I feel so much better when I keep moving. My back is a mess, joints hurt like the dickens but it's worse when I sit on my duff. So I keep moving along. The things I get to see and the people I have met along the way have helped with the motivation. Often when I get up to go to these places I just plain don't feel like it. But when I stand on the summit of a peak, have a snack at Ice Lake, ponder the ancient people that lived in a cliff dwelling deep in a canyon I quickly come to my senses and start planning the next adventure. Like you said so well, one step at a time. In the end it feels good and is worth it. Keep at it. If I can do it anyone can. Thank you for watching. Keep in touch. Dana

Thank you, Dana. I will be in the Uinta's at the end of September and my first hike will be up to a Lake about 2 1/2 miles up from Spirit Lake, UT which is at 10,200 ft. It has been on my list to hike in there for a few years, but the Tiger Trout fishing at Spirit Lake is go great that I cannot seem to get myself off the darn lake!

Awesome video. I did the trail last year a few weeks after hiking uncompahgre (a 14er around there). Just a word of caution, treat the trail like you would a 14er because afternoon storms can get dangerous especially since weather is concealed like he mentioned and a good part of the trail is above tree line. I found it much more challenging than the 14er I did (uncompahgre peak), but the best trail I have ever hiked.

Here is the coordinate of about where you park. I have not done it but plan to. Copy paste this into Google maps and check it out. 37.814058, -107.776934. Take the road up the switch backs before you get to the campground / trailhead. I understand there are no parking signs so you must pull off the road to park.

Research Grizzly country and don't go there Black and brown bears that may bother you are going to be around more traveled areas: they have experience of hikers smelling like food DONT EAT IN YOUR TENT Don't smell like food (like cleaning residual chocolate off your fingers on your ants) If you are really concerned then cam to eat then move on to an overnite site Hang a bear bag I have seen many bears here in Manitou going through the trashcans and never in the backcountry except a beautiful cinnamon colored bear at a campground in Idaho Do however steer clear of range cattle Contact local forest service area office and ask about bear sightings Sorry that my keyboard does not work fully and leaves thing out Have fun it is really pretty safe out there
