- SLOWBRO! The Hermit Crab Pokemon!....Even though its clearly a Hippo but I won’t judge. Slowbro evolves via a shellder biting its tail which brings its mind back to reality which is otherwise filled with psychic energy. Join False Swipe Gaming and find out with this brief overview of the competitive History of Slowbro!

DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
To the people asking why I don't cover Smogon Singles for Gens 1 and 2: It wouldn't really be a history video if I covered those because online Smogon gen 1 meta to my knowledge wasn't actually played until late 2000s. I wanted to cover tournaments/competitive battling that was actually played during the early years of Pokemon (late 90s).
To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for Gens 3-5 and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

Slowbro/poke facts!
-Slowpoke’s tails are apparently delicious, hence why Shellders like to bite on them!
-Slowbro was created before Slowpoke
-In early development of Red/Green, Slowpoke was called Yaddohogera. Hogera is essentially gibberish, so Slowpoke’s name was just to show that it was connected to Slowbro
-Slowking was found dead in an alleyway on March 3rd, 2004
Wait? Found dead?!?!?
>Found dead

The cause of death was a Full Restore overdose

love for the bro man, the one and only.
def my favorite pokemon from gen 1
Normal types couldn't be paralyzed by Body Slam? I don't think I'll ever run out of weird things to learn about Gen 1.
I think the community learned that fact a but recently aswell.
I think I tested this around 3-4 years ago based on a hunch I had as a child. In general: Pokémon couldn't be affected by statuses of moves which had a type in common with them so no thunder(bolt) paralysis on electric-type Pokémon or freeze on ice-types.
Thunder wave still works on electric types in gen 1 stadium
Thunder wave works on every non-ground type pokemon in cartridge gen 1 games too. Pokemon are only immune to the secondary status effect of damaging attacks of their type. So electric pokemon can't be paralyzed by Thunderbolt, but they can be paralyzed by Thunder wave since it doesn't deal damage and the paralysis isn't a secondary effect.
Here is a weird one I learned recently. If you use the normal type attack wrap on a ghost it doesn't affect it but the wrap happens... It also doesn't deal damage but can waste a ton of turns. Potential for fire or poison dmg. Dank strats
Funny part is that the Shellder part was going to in the Gold beta, but was scraped.
aww
Indeed, it was named 'Turban' and was a pure water type, and was the mutated shelder that you see on Slowbros tail but as it's own off of Slowbro Pokemon. How you would get one is unknown, although I have always imagned that the Slowpoke tail item might have had something to do with it. Trade a shellder holding a slowpoketail or level it up holding it/use it on one and ta da, your shellder has evolved into Turban. Via them, you know, biting into a cut off slowpoke tail. Just a theory, but makes perfect sense right?
Feel like they should add that cuz mantine exist
@@mpg272727 Actually it's Water/Ground, not only pure water (either that or Water/Ice, the types differentiate between Pokemon Clover and Super Gold/Spaceworld Demo)
“Apparently if shellder gets thrown off, slowbro turns back into slowpoke; a tactic we won’t be covering in this video” had me dyin
I can't be the only one who thought Slowbro evolved into Slowking as a kid, right?
DBZ Macky I was the kid who wished that was the case, but knew otherwise.
I did as well
yup.....ur not alone,my freind.
Wait... it doesn't? Is Slowking a standalone?
Tripticket it evolves from slowpoke. Slowpoke can evolve in slowbro and slowking. I thaught that he evolved from slowbro as well until a month ago
Thank you for this awesome video! Slowbro is my favorite Pokemon due to a funny and ridiculous story. My cousin and I when we were 7 and 8 years old were completing the Pokemon red and blue in our respective Gameboy for the first time. The only Pokemon we needed to finally complete the game was Slowbro, because we managed to get mew with the hack exploit that an older kid taught us. We watched in the anime that Slowpoke evolved into Slowbro with a Shellder bite so we started to exchange my slowpoke and his shellder through our link cable and when the two little guys come across for a few seconds in our screens we started to smash the game boy buttons at the same time trying all possible combinations. We were about to give up when we thought, eh, maybe they need to be a little stronger, then when we exchange them they will do the weird polymerization thing. So I started to level up my Slowpoke and he did the same with the shellder cancelling the evolution to Cloyster each level up. Suddenly my Slowpoke reached lv 37 and it finally became a Slowbro. We felt so silly but also we felt so happy when we achieved our last Pokedex data hahahahah That was my favorite summer and since then I've been using Slowbro and also later Slowking in every Pokemon game. I miss the days when internet was not that big so we had to search info in the Pokemon magazines and the rumours and myths drove us crazy to try new things to search all the pokemons. Thanks for reading this, I really enjoyed this video a lot ! Greetings from Spain

I love that 3d fainting animation.
It's like slowbro had to consult the shellder.

I just realized that if they ever bring Mega Evolutions back they’re gonna have to give one to Galarian Slowbro
It be cool if it were offensive instead of defensive.
Mr.strong Ok yeah it’d have a big gun or like more weapons
Imagine if it was just his feet.

Why are you replying to a totally unrelated thread instead of just making a new comment...
my favourite thing about slowpoke is that it never technically evolves, even when slowbro mega evolves, the pokedex admits that its only the shelder mega evolving.
Great. Next ur gonna tell me my life was a lie
And now, it gets Teleport with Regenerator, making it a bulky beast in the NatDex metagame and it's probably gonna be crazy good once the DLC comes out.

I have an idea for your channel, False Swipe
Rather than covering Pokémon (or types), you could cover certain roles, for example:
-Bulky Waters
-Leads
-Late game sweepers
Cover why they were (un)important, why and how they were played, how they were dealt with, and which Pokémon came and went in terms of being good at the role.
I give this idea my full support.
beunjoris no
I just don't like it
this deserves a pin!
beunjoris I think this should be covered after some Pokémon are covered. People like these vids, so I think they could be created in tandem
This is why I love Slowbro (Paul). Since the beginning, the meta always favored fast Pokemon while cursing just as good slower Pokémon to be useless. Slowbro however breaks this trope and whips ass in every meta.
Paul......I understand that reference
Mines named Bobby and he is always a given in my team
I love running flamethrower/Fireblast on Slowbro as either a check for grass types or a troll move nobody's expecting. Thanks for the video, Slowbro was better AND worse than I expected it to be, very informative!
This is definitely one that needs a remake. especially with how slowbro's doing in gen 8.
Slowbro also needs to be mention in Gen 1 Ubers as one of the Best Mewtwo checks not running Thunderbolt and a decent Mew check

How good was Raichu ACTUALLY? Pikachu's evolution needs some love too ya know...

Exactly mediocre.
why use Eviolite-Porygon when you can use Eviolite-Porygon2?
I Am A Duck YESSSSSSSSSS
Slowbro is likely due for an update on his career in the competitive scene since Slowbro did get a new galarian form which made the pink dope a psychic/poison type. And could see how slowpoke and slowking have done within their respective careers in the competitive scene, which would complete the whole circle of the slowpoke family line.
"Buuuut that was if you really wanted to run a physical Slowbro." Better call Pimpnite.
How GOOD was Wynaut and Wobbuffet ACTUALLY?
I'm gonna keep asking for this. Its competitive history is so interesting.
esspecially its place in the smogon meta, which has been quite diverse over the years...
From Uber to pu
Well....wynaut, am i right? Hehe
wobbuffet is very op if you know how to use wobbuffet he can one hit pretty much everything using counter and mirror coat
Wobbuffet went from awful without shadow tag to way op with shadow tag to great but predictable with team preview to awful without shadow tag again (its still good in ubers with shadow tag).

I wish you focused more on the tier the pokemon is actually in. For Slowbro in UU focusing on the UU metagame rather than the OU one would be cool
What about the BAN tier
@@isayrandomthings680 you mean Borderline/BL? It's not a true meta it's just a banlist of pokémon too strong for the tier under OU,UU,RU etc
Or if you mean Ubers where all the broken Legends & Megas are then sure than we got videos of them already
Nowadays, he does.
How GOOD was Sneasel/Weavile ACTUALLY?
I can do an abridged version right now if you want.
GSC: Crappy movepool, bad typing (weak against 5 types and quad weak to fighting), no STAB (35 base sp. attack will do nothing to anything), and bad defenses. It's fucking cool though, it just begs for swords dance (which it didn't have lol). It's countered by anything that has a super effective move against it (shoutouts to Machamp). It's not even worthwhile in UnderUsed.
RSE: It has a better movepool (though that's not saying much), but much of what applies in GSC applies here. It can actually kill stuff now, most notable all psychic and ghosts types that aren't Alakazam and Starmie. With Swords Dance and Choice Band under its belt, it became a very potent threat in UnderUsed. Notable checks include most Intimidators, Blastoise, Meganium, Golem, and Sudowoodo in UnderUsed. I couldn't find anything for OU sorry.
DPP: Sneasel evolves. Yay. And it's pretty good too. Weavile is most known for it being a fucking good physical attacker. With the Physical/Special Split happening, this thing actually has STAB now. Yay. it could kill a lot of things, a lot of things could kill it. It was even used as an attacking lead to fuck over Aero and Azelf. It's movepool isn't stellar, but hey, it's good. Very good. It's OverUsed, for God's sake. Common counters include steel types (shoutouts to Scizor), bulky shit (Gyarados is a good example), and Machamp. Especially Machamp.
BW: Well then. Fighting types are everywhere. This isn't going to be good. It dropped to UnderUsed, but surprisingly, this thing still had some traction in OU, ranking B tier on the Smogon Gen 5 OU viability tier list, which is amazing for a meta filled with fighting pokemon. It's defenses don't help it though, being frail as fuck still (70/65/85 defense total is not that good) It was mainly used as a physical attacker, using pursuit to stand out from Mamoswine. To avoid it this being a page an a half long, it OHKO'ed shit, shit OHKO'ed it, its countered shit, shit countered it. Very much of a double-edged sword. In UnderUsed, it gets a bit more traction, but not much more, as Machamp still exists. In OU, notable counters are Vappy, Chansey, Skarmory, Forretress, Wish Jirachi, and Keldeo. In UU, notable counters are most bulky waters, bulky steel types, and Choice Scarf users that outspeed it (most notably Victini, Chandelure, Rotom H, Heracross, and Darmanitan).
XY: This thing's back in OU. This'll be fun. It basically did the same shit it did since DPP, but now there's a gazillion fucking fairy types running around everywhere killing every goddamn dark and dragon type around. Same shit with it killing, same shit with it being killed, you get the point. Notable checks include Clefable, bulky waters, bulky steels, most any fighting type, and shit with priority moves. Weavile is still frail as fuck, so most anything that's faster than it is a threat.
So yeah this thing was pretty goddamn good.
How GOOD was "THE ROCK" Type ACTUALLY?
IT DOESN'T MATTER how good rock-type was!
The Poke'Saurus still great offensively, but defensively, refer to the musical genre.
Hey could you do videos comparing Alola forms with their original forms. Which one is better
obviously, alolan marowak is better than kanto marowak
It really depends on how we use these Kanto or Alolan Pokemon
@@thegreatrowlet6073 why? its just as slow and a lot more weaknesses.
Huh relevant comment
@@Genesis23OPB the typing lets it have some great match ups against common meta threats, it has a different and more useful movepool than the regular form and its a better trickroom abuser, it can be offensive while also providing some utility to the team with stealth rocks too, so thats why.
Slowbro has always been one of my favorite pokemon ever.
I feel like Slow twins will need a remake since in gen 8 they both play differently and have Galar forms

Do Typhlosion, Meganium, and Feraligatr before moving on to Generation 3! You should always do the generations starters final evolutions before moving on to the next generation!
TheNorth15 Meh... Meganium had an odd stat distribution, Typholsion didn’t have a great moveset, but Feraligatr was only alright. Starters are either really good or really bad competitively. The only starters that made a good difference in the meats are Charizard Y, Blaziken, Swampert, Infernape, Serperior, and Greninja.
All of the johto starters had crap stats and abilities.
Slowbro needs a reboot.
I can't be the only one guys
How GOOD was Metagross ACTUALLY?
Cetaceously good. That would be FSG's shortest video. It's just....damn good lol
Woof Master Arf good.... since it first appeared....
Mega metagross with tough claws can sweep a team with bullet punch. I have done it
Spoilers: really fucking good.
It's good: high base attack (135 atk, 130 def, 90 spd), good type combination (8 resistances + 1 immunity), access to some great moves (Meteor marsh, earthquake) and clear body is a nice addition to keep its stat high. The only barrier keeping it from dominated meta back then was mediocre base hp and speed (also lack of good psychic STAB)
later version it gain bullet punch and zen headbutt which solve some of its problem. Hammer arm is a thing for dark and other steel-type pokémon
And then, the mega evolution. Tbh, it not that impressive, speed is the most important thing metagross get, from 70 to 110 mean it can start sweeping now. Tough claw boost all of its STAB, too (and almost all of it attacking moves). It HP is abyssal for a mega evolution as it still 80. Steel-type now neutral to dark and ghost open up two more weaknesses for metagross, both are specialize in special moves.
Imo metagross is one of the more balanced pokémon with clear strenth and weakness for check and counter
Would be fun to get a follow-up to this video with Galarian Slowbro when that settles in. I hope it'll do well, but I have no idea.
Mega slowbro wearing the shelder that bit its tail seems to have the same defense as cloyster 👀
At first Slowbro's mega evolution is somewhat strange but given how the slowpoke line basically revolves around how Shellder becomes a spiky shell-like creature whenever it attaches to slowpoke, suppose it makes sense. Although Galarian slowbro and slowking seem to have a slightly different relationship than slowpoke that reside outside of the Galar region.

Snowy Inferno Yes, apart from Slowbro, I have been asking from Magneton/zone from the beginning
Agreed let's go
I used Magnezone in my White 2 run and it pretty much became the MVP of my team.
Your analyses are very interesting. Keep up the good work!
Mega Slowbro was a monster, calm mind boosting, and slack off would completely wall teams with shell armor
Magneton/Magnazone, my friend! It'd be SHOCKING to us if you did them.
Considering how often you talk about this mon, do Weezing
Woo Hyun Kang Yeah!
How about Golem next?
Amnesia and it can learn Body Slam. It's attack is not bad, and you can teach it swords dance. This was an original OP. Amnesia boosted two stats because they combined Sp. Att. and Sp. Def. into Special. So Amnesia boost meant it took much less damage from special attacks, which were few and far between in Gen. 1 games, and raised it's power to use strong moves, like Surf or Hydro Pump, Psychic, Giga Drain and Ice Beam or Blizzard.
I did use a Slowbro for my playthrough in Pokemon Sun and he was one of my best members. He had Surf and Psychic for high powered STAB, Ice Beam for the Grass, and Yawn for tanks or to heal. All in all, while being a tank in most cases, he is a great offense pokemon. I named him Larry at first but changed it to Patrick Star.
Slowbro is not much of a worse name than talonflame. Both are more creative than slowpoke I guess.
Please do gardevoir or vaporeon next!
Midnight Smiles Gardevoir is unlikely for now, but Vaporeon and Jolteon are the only other early good Eeveelutions
Flareon was never that good, Pure grass is a bad type for a physical attacker that got really good stab but not much else, and Glaceon. Pure Ice, bad type, not good moves, terrible stat distribution with no speed to back up its Sp Att, and no HP to back up its defenses.
Jesus Renteria can’t believe I missed that lol. Imma keep it up because why should I change it at this point? Meant to say Fire
