    DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
    Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
    To the people asking why I don't cover Smogon Singles for Gens 1 and 2: It wouldn't really be a history video if I covered those because online Smogon gen 1 meta to my knowledge wasn't actually played until late 2000s. I wanted to cover tournaments/competitive battling that was actually played during the early years of Pokemon (late 90s).
    To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for Gens 3-5 and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
    For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

    I remember back in the days of Diamond and Pearl I wanted a crobat in the worse kind of way and I couldn't figure out how to evolve it. So one day, I left all my pokemon behind but me and Golbat and I walked into the distant mountains. For one real life week I trained that Golbat armed with nothing but a bunch of potions and by the end of that week, seeing that Golbat evolve was one of the most beautiful evolutions I had ever seen

      I remember I heard some guy on TH-cam say that Crobat was a good Pokemon so in my platinum run, I caught a Lvl. 5 Zubat, and with Leech Life, Super Sonic, and sheer will power, I got it up to Lvl. 10, gave up, and just caught a Golbat later in my playthrough.

    As someone who was part of the suspect test, Crobat wasn't really banned for being unpredictable in 4th gen UU. It was banned because the set Brave Bird/Taunt/U-Turn/Roost was weirdly unbeatable. Crobat's 4x resistances to Fighting, Grass, and Bug and immunity to Ground and Toxic meant it had no trouble finding chances to switch in, and once it did, it just put a stop to whatever you were doing. Support Pokemon get taunted, defensive Pokemon were a chance to heal, and frail attackers got the Bird, which all worked because nothing was faster than Crobat. The set doesn't look like much, but it was super oppressive to play against.

    There was actually a reason why the sleep talk set was decent (albiet gimicky) in gen 3. In gen 3, when put to sleep, there's a sleep counter that is set imidiately when induced and the counter goes down every turn you stay asleep, but there's a weird glitch that happens with sleep talk in gen 3. If, let's say, the sleep status was going to put crobat to sleep for 4 turns, if you use sleep talk and then switch out, the counter resets. This means if you sleep talk for 3 turns, switch out, switch back in, you can still sleep talk for 3 more turns until you wake up. This also applies to rest as well, which is why Rest/Talk was still a viable option after gen 2, and why these sets pretty much died off after gen 2 and 3. But anyways, This is why this gimmick set exists. You are guaranteed to whirlwind a set amount of times every time Crobat switches in for the rest of the battle given Crobat doesn't faint or accedently wake up. The gamble here was you don't know how many turns your opponent put you to sleep for, so if u wake up on accident before switching, then crobat is essentially useless, which is why it was never used seriously. This is also why some choice band users had sleep talk in gen 3, like Herracross.

      KnightofFunnyJunk I'm no programmer, but I'm sure the way they programmed sleep in this game had something to do with the pokemon not attacking. Like maybe there's a counter that updates for sleeping party pokemon and it will only update if they don't attack or something. It's probably not bad programming, just an oversight within it.

      Another thing that I feel like should have been talked about what Hypnosis on Crobat in gen 4. In Diamond, Pearl, and PBR, Hypnosis was, for whatever reason 70% accurate as opposed to 60% in every other generation or games. This was fixed in Platinum and HG/SS (to my knowledge the only fix between the gen ever) but in D/P meta, crobat had a nitch as being the fastest hypnosis user in the game, temporarily giving it enough usage to be OU in the early days of DP. Infact, if you played on console, if the host player is on D/P and playing vs Platinum, it uses the 70% accuracy, but ofc all simulators use the Pt accuracy. Anyways, it was such an important change that really depleted any sort of usage from crobat, as prior to the change, the Nasty Plot set was a force to be reckoned with, and just standard Physical variants could set something to sleep and get switch initiative with U turn as the opponent switched their sleeping pokemon. It honestly was a shame that it was removed for crobats sake, then again I wouldn't want to deal with 70% hypnosis from a gengar either, so I guess it was a good fix.

There's nothing to be ashamed of being a UU, RU or NU Pokemon if you excel in there. If I could wish for anything, it's that GF could create specific OU niches for every Pokemon out there. But that's the realm for a creative and inspired trainer!!

    Do Typhlosion, Meganium, and Feraligatr before moving on to Generation 3! You should always do the generations starters final evolutions before moving on to the next generation!

    • @viscero6448
      @viscero6448 7 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Feraligatr is UU/RU/NU
      Meganium is BL/UU/NU/PU
      Typhlosion is BL/RU/NU
      To be honest, none of the Gen 2 starters were remotely close to being viable for competitive . They were simply outclassed by every pokemon of their type and of their role. They all have low speed, terrible move pools, and have generally less to offer than most common pokemon.
      Feraligatr is easily replaced by other Water sweepers like Gyarados, Meganium by Venusaur in its own generation, Tangrowth, Gourgeist, and Quilladin in others, Typhlosion by Charizard, Delphox, Magmortar.
      Gen 2 starters were probably the weakest starters to have in any generation.

    • @Zendvious
      @Zendvious 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      gen 2 starters where like gen 1 starters, but worse, much worse

    • @TheNorth15
      @TheNorth15 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      +Marcelo Marcelo
      Nope not really. They all had good strengths and weaknesses. You had the incredibly strong but predictable Typhlosion with it's limited moveset. You had the overpowered sheer force/dragon dance Feraligatr paired with a life orb that loses it's recoil effects. Than there's Meganium, which can either be used as a cleric support or a sword dancing tank that is kind of the sticky glue that holds the team together. Meganium is probably the weakest on the offensive side but is certainly not useless thanks to it's strong access of support moves.
      On the other hand, I think we can all agree that all three starters definitely need a huge update to there movepool. Or at least give them a signature move to work with.

    • @oles9196
      @oles9196 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Gen 2 Starters have potential but their stats and movepools are not good.
      Im not the mainstream guy who just hates them cauz of bad tiers and honestly I love to use Meganium and Typhlosion.
      I hate Feraligatr cauz its only strengh is that it can ice punch Grass Types but there arent much Water types that cant use Ice moves anyway.
      The Problem about the rest is the same as the one of Golbat cauz they are alll real allrounders but they break themself because of it.
      Meganium has good coverage (Earthquake and ancient power) but it isnt physical and it isnt special and its moves are very mixed too. So you cant really play a Physical or special Meganium. And all allrounders are bad for EV training cauz you have to cover many stats and you arent allowed to max just 2 to have outstanding stats. You can play eviolite Bayleef but than it loses important coverage and you can play assault vest on it for more bulk and better Ev training or you can make it just bulky with EVs and give it left-overs to put set ups and toxic on it.
      Typhlosion has the same EV and stat problems and its very mixed too.

    • @TheNorth15
      @TheNorth15 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I don't know about you guys but here's my ideas for some Mega Evolutions to improve the Johto starters.
      Mega Meganium - Grass/Fairy type - Multiscale - Fairy type is a no brainer and Meganium is meant to be tanky so Multiscale would be perfect. Maybe a increase of Attack/Sp. Attack from 80 to a 100.
      Mega Typhlosion - Fire/Psychic type - Magic Guard - Psychic type, for those who don't know this, is possibly Typhlosion's second most recognizable related type because of two things. Typhlosion is one of the few non-psychic type Pokemon that has access to extrasensory and Typhlosion actually has a Psychic regional variant long before Alolan variants showed up. It's called Delta Species from the Pokemon TCG and Typhlosion's alternate typing was Psychic. Plus Psychic/Fire typing sounds pretty badass other than Delphox.
      Mega Feraligatr - Water/Dark type - Sheer Force - Feraligatr already works well with sheer force, so he doesn't actually need any further improvements except maybe bulk.

    Crobat really needs an buff in its base 90 attack stat. It's been a while since I played the Battle Frontier, but Crobat really helped me out. Its base 130 speed stat came in handy. Plus it has STAB Aerial Ace and it's immune to Toxic. It's hard to believe that it's roughly the same size as Hydreigon.

    If Crobat had a good 20 more points in its attack stat it would actually be pretty awesome given its versatility. I love fast Pokemon and Crobat became one of my favorites in gen 6 and beyond because it can learn some good moves and having a fast poison-type comes in handy with all the fairies running rampant. I especially like that in gen 7 they buffed Leech Life which gives it a great move to kill Dark and Psychic types with while also giving it a bit of sustain.

      b99b12 Delibird only works for Spikes + Destiny Bond.

    • @Salnax
      @Salnax 7 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      For shits and giggles:
      Delibird first showed up in Gen 2, where everyone immediately laughed at it. Its typing was poor, its Defenses were laughable, its offenses were lacking, and even TMs couldn't do much. It would have been completely useless if it didn't have access to Spikes and Rapid Spin, thanks to an event and breeding respectively. The best strategy it had was starting with Spikes, following up with Toxic, and then using Thief to swipe the enemy's Leftovers. Ice Beam is the best offensive option it has, and it could also use Hidden Power for a Flying STAB move. Rapid Spin was not a bad idea, since Delibird was the only user of Rapid Spin that wasn't hurt by Spikes, but neither set was that great. Besides, plenty of mons could shrug off Ice Beam due to their typing or at least tank it before obliterating Delibird. So Delibird ended up in Underused.
      In Generation 3, Delibird lost the ability to use Spikes, which was a big problem for it. Fortunately, it got the abilities Hustle and Vital Spirit. Of the two, Hustle was more frequently used, since its power boost was sorely needed. Hustle also worked well with the new Aerial Ace, since it ignored the Accuracy loss. Ice Beam was still valuable, and was worth using thanks to its typing and tolerable Special Attack. Quick Attack gave it a way to counter Endeavor users, Focus Punch gave it a decent way of punishing switches, and Rapid Spin was still an option. It might have kept its place in Underused if it could still use Spikes, but was instead demoted to Never Used, though it sometimes saw service in UU.
      Gen 4 was the time when things went from bad to worse for Delibird. Not only did Stealth Rock take half of its HP, it also made it useless as a Rapid Spinner. The Aerial Ace and Hustle combo was still essential. Since Ice moves included both physical and special options, Ice Beam was replaced with Ice Punch and Ice Shard, so it could invest its EVs and nature entirely into Physical offense. Ice Shard also made Quick Attack obsolete as a priority move, thanks to STAB. Focus Punch (or Brick Break) and Seed Bomb could help it counter the Rock/Steel bulky Water types that would otherwise devastate it. But in all honesty, it was firmly rooted in Never used.
      Generation 5 didn't help much. Even that new Hidden Ability Insomnia was almost the same thing as Vital Spirit.It was still relying on the same mix of Hustle, Aerial Ace, Ice Shard, Ice Punch, and Focus Punch that it relied on last generation. But honestly, nothing was improving. Never Used
      In Generation 6, Delibird finally got some good news, in that it had access to Spikes once again, along with Rapid Spin. It could lead and get off one or two layers of Spikes. It also got its grubby little hands on Destiny Bond, which could be used as an unwelcome surprise. Freeze Dry gave it a way of dealing with Water types, many of which would normally be used to Defog Spikes. Icy Wind could be used to lower speed and better set up Destiny Bond. All of this new stuff was good, but it wasn't enough to reverse the past couple of gens of damage. Besides, Delibird had loads of counters still out there. Faster Pokemon kept it from using more than one layer of Spikes, Taunt users prevented Spikes from being used, priority moves could negate its relatively decent speed, and users of Rapid Spin and Defog made it worthless as a Spikes user. Delibird was stuck in PU.
      So how good was Delibird? It wasn't. Though it had a bit of promise for two generations, thanks to Spikes and Rapid Spin, it has always had a limited movepool, and the metagame changed in ways that hurt Delibird quicker than it could keep up. The sad part is that if it got access to its Generation 6 tricks earlier on, it might have found a niche. But even then, the existence of Stealth Rock crippled it, both in terms of removing a load of HP and making its ability to Rapid Spin Spikes obsolete.

    I had always said that Golbat/Crobat was a better Flying Type than it was a Poison Type, but I hadn't realized just how flexible it was overall! And this is coming from me, who someone swept his friend's team with a Golbat in ORAS once and then took it to the E4 as a Crobat!

      Yeah for these videos where the unevolved Pokemon ends up being viable in lower tiers with eviolite a quick mention would be pretty nice.

    • @qwilliams1539
      @qwilliams1539 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed, it should have been mentioned. Even if it was just something like: Golbat got Eviolite in Gen 5, but do to its terrible offensive capabilities, just imagine the supportive Crobat set, but 1 tier lower.

      +Qwilliams he did crobat due to him bieng better than golbat and he did it in his chansey and blissey video he said he will only do one of them depending which one did better in a certian generarion

    • @qwilliams1539
      @qwilliams1539 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good catch. Completely forgot that. Chansey and Blissey were both done because they both were excellent at their stalling job. Makes sense why he only did Rhyperior starting in gen 4 for that video.

    Whenever i play a game with Crobat and Skarmory, I'm always stuck tossing a coin as to which i will keep as my flying pokemon. Both are so good. But its not a good idea to have both. Haha

    Personally I prefer Golbat. You don't see many eviolite pokemon with usable speed (or a reliable recovery move). I play mine as a poison Mandibuzz - toxic, roost, taunt, full speed investment, etc.

      It is a pretty good pokémon but nobody used it in competitive battling. It is like Crobat, it is outclassed both as a special as a physical sweeper. The only REALLY good thing it has is it's ability serene grace. And it's sort of good defensive stats. And it's f**king good movepool.
