Only problem with Black/White is that the story takes up a very large portion of the game, so the playtime is extremely bloated and not as good for speeding through. They are my favorite games, though.
A pokemon I would recommend starting with: Moxie Krookodile. This thing tears through 90% of the game like butter. You can use Bite to sweep until you get Dig before Elesa, then this thing really takes off learning Crunch and Earthquake by level up. It deals with like every gym decently well, Though Lenora or Burgh might give you some problems earlier on. The former being threatening because of intimidate + Watchog with retaliate, and the latter bc of STAB Razor Leaf + quad resist for ground on Leavanny. But you can still hit both neutrally and you'll be set up to +2 against Leavanny. Lenora is just plain threatening in general, so there's no getting around her easily without a rock, steel, or fighting type. Outside of that though I would be remiss to find an issue up until Marshall, who is tricky bc of supereffective moves and Sawk's Sturdy. you can minimize that risk though by facing all three other 3 free E4 members first for EXP. This thing leads well against N or Ghetsis too, being strong against both lead mons then getting the moxie boost to sweep afterwards.
"imagine if I had a little more speed, like 50" Scott, you still have the Mewtwo run to do don't worry! Slowbro is truly the goat of gen 1. In any playthrough it is very useful with that amazing move pool and bulk. Also it's one of the few checks to Mewtwo in Ubers, when Mewtwo lacks Thunderbolt of course. It's one of the most consistent and has an "easy" time achieving great results!
Seeing Slowbro in action makes me excited because it shows that even Pokémon with low base Speed can achieve amazing results. It makes me wonder what other slow Pokémon can make it to such great results.

I’m glad your voice is feeling better Scott! In regards to your streaming, what if you did primarily fun runs? The back ports would be great options since they’re outside the regular series. Politoed, Slowking, Magmortar, Tangrowth, etc could be options and even serve as another series if you wanted to do a ranking there. Or you could have a stream ranking with that had a new twist (speed run no TM/HM) in Blue, Red, Gold, Silver, etc. Another option, you could learn new games on stream as unofficial results and have the community vote which mons you learn the game with. So proud of Slowbro! The upper tiers are getting quite crowded. Oh, and Exeggutor's run sounds like it's gonna be a lot of fun (for us to watch). Shame about its level-up moves, hopefully it gets a decent growth rate at least? :) :)
My favorite doing so well brings me so much joy! Even with some of the worst confusion luck I've seen in an lp, it did so well. Really shows that speed might be good, but amnesia is even better!
As someone influenced highly by visual stimuli, I very, VERY highly apreciate your warning (red tiles), just putting it out. I very much wish more youtubers would be as considerate as you are, I really apreciate it. Thank you.
I couldn't help but notice the accuracy seemed to be calculating correctly on your setup during the Sabrina fight. Was that a fix you made in post? Also, I love how Lorelei had a secret hidden Machamp in the first run with Slowbro.
If each of the "Weezing Duo" have two Weezings, shouldn't that be the "'Weezing Duo', Duo", or if you count them together, the "Weezing Quartet"? Though I suppose if you count the trainers, they could be the "Weezing Sextet". Slowbro is my favorite Pokémon so have a little tip. Love the dopey slow boy! Happy holidays, Scott!
I do not mind at all if you are commenting over a streamed run, even if there are more mistakes. Kinda adds to the story and shows that it isn't braindead easy to play these games this way or anything. Id rather get a first playthough as a steamed run than to not see a certain pokemon. Love the vids either way impressed by Slowbro's performance
Amazing how Bruno has evolved from an Elite Four member, to a Hiker, to retiring and giving his Machamp to Lorelei! Also if visuals and photosensitivity has been an issue, would you consider changing the visual filter? Depending on your software you could change the colors to be dulled down a bit for the Pokémon Mansion. Since it's required in every run it might be something worth considering.
~28:15 -- RE: emulators, yeah, I got about halfway with my overlay, ran into a bug and decided to switch emulators to BizHawk because it gives easy hooks for resets (hard and soft) as well as memory breakpoints and register manipulation (0 DVs guarenteed) in memory breakpoints. I got as far as finishing porting the parser for the old GameHook file formats to the new plugin, then my PC died (power port came unsoddered and since I didn't want to ship it to "Texas" for a Month each way I decided to buy a new one and have been setting everything back up...)
Re: turning off encounters: maybe the best way to deal with this is to make those areas have an auto Repel on. That way slow Pokemon still take a penalty. Even if it is RNG.
it's so awesome watching you progress in your skill becoming a solo runner. tho there was something charming about you making really bad decisions with your runs
Slowbro is amazing in Gen 1 competitive. It can go 50/50 in the Mewtwo matchup with the right build, and part of what makes it work is the low speed. It doesn't care about losing speed to paralysis, so it can stay in after Resting, unlike other mons that want to switch out to reset their speed.
@@skeetermania3202 Iirc, Mewtwo can't crit one shot Slowbro, and if Mewtwo is boosting that means you have time to boost. Psychic, Thunderbolt, Recover and Amnesia means Mewtwo is permanently paralyzed and gets outsped by your Mewtwo. If they have Rest instead of Recover, that gives you the switch, let's Slowbro Rest or lets you go for Special drops then reapply Paralysis when they wake up. And all of that is ignoring that running Thunderbolt for Slowbro undermines your mirror match, where you really want to try to fish for Freeze with Ice Beam or Special drops with Psychic. Tobybro only has a 50/50, but what do you have that is better?
Shouldn’t leave encounters off because the encounters would force you to waste pp and could effect way to much in the out coming time. The rock tunnels encounters are just part of gen 1 it’s the only part of the cave that’s memorable. Beside the moonstone and exit being point of no return.
Scott minor UI note. I really like the watery blue background of the new UI, but a minor pet peeve is that in the bottom left 1/3rd of the screen below the video, a few streaks of the blue water stick out, and are an eyesore. If it’s possible to tighten that up just the slightest bit, I think it would lead to a better viewing experience. Thanks for all the great videos this December!
I think the problem with "Swift" is in the translation of the move itself. In japanese it is translated to "speed star" - in my own language, german, it is called "Sternschauer" and it says that the user shoots starlike projectiles at a high speed at the opponent.
I think the best idea is streaming something different. It can be pokemon or it can be whatever, it would be very sad for some people not seeing this runs on yt due to schedule or time differences PD: thanks for giving us your time this way, keep going champ!
We definitely need to update bulbapedia. Until today, at the 6:13 mark, I had no idea that *Zubat* learned _Leech Seed_ . How I never knew that and used that awesome strategy with the OG bat pokemon, is beyond me.
It's so funny that you uploaded this today. I did a random starter solo run yesterday playing Crystal and also got Slowbro lol It's very good. Made it all the way to Red without needless grinding 😁
Bukkake is the first thing that I want you inside you to me about it was that I don't know keep 😂so you don't have a good night lol I hope so so much for your time with me today and I don't want to miss you again and hope you have a urh3 hours is your stomach is a book
I enjoy the emerald and fire red content but man it just hits different when youre back in yellow! Slowbro was a beast, knew he'd be good due to amnesia, but thought his speed would hold him back a bit more than it did. Im pumped for Exeggutor, just such a shame its lack of a learnset due to being a stone evo will probably hold it back.
Slowbroooooooooo, love the little slow bugger Regarding the streaming: first, maybe they are best suited to learn the new games with a greater audience. And you will also learn to better stream and interact over time. Second, I would really like watching your streams, but a longer time between announcement and actual stream would be great. Like 30-60 minutes in advance. That way we can all prepare ourselves and make room for your content ❤
Exegutor is gonna have a real rough time of it, Not only is brock gonna roadblock it hard, All the zubats in both caves are gonna shred it and its gonna struggle against the many poison types, It might be the only psychic type bar Abra and its own pr-evo to hit d or lower, It might make up some time in the late game but Blaine, Lorelei and Agatha are all dicey could go either way fights, Lance could even be an issue if his garbage ai decides to be competent
I think that first playthroughs while streaming is the way to go. It seems like you really enjoy it, your quality of play suffering won't be too bad for the ranking, and then you'll obscure the optimized result for when the actual video comes out so folks will want to watch it for that, even if they skip to that part of the video.
The move Swift's english name got nothing to do with the speed of the Pokemon using it. It's simply about the stars being shot moving so fast, thus the guaranteed hit accuracy. The original name translates to speed stars iirc.
The other day i had a pokemon get 12 special defence drops in a row with earth power, and i misswd thunder wave twice. And last year it took 142 encounters to find a dratini in dragons den which also has a 10 percent chance.
You're right the red and white tiles are awful. That said, after the mention that it's safe to look again, there are a few more raticates later on, as well as blaine's gym. I don't know if it's an oops, or if you have a reason for treating those different. In case it's an accident I thought I'd mention it. love the vids
The fact that Slowbro would rank even higher if it hadn't been for that very unfortunate reset is astonishing. I'm sure it'll get that reset-free playthrough one day.
Slowbro really did put in an impressive performance! Amnesia should never be discounted (which makes me wonder how well Pokemon Stadium Prize Psyduck with Amnesia will perform...) Always glad to see Oak set up for the win...! And then fumble at the last moment.
Love the video! Since amnesia is so good it makes me wonder how Poliwhirl will do compared to Poliwrath. 🤔 Also Poliwhirl is my favorite gen 1 Pokemon. Hope to see this soon!
For the Mt. Moon encounter methodology, have there been considerations for instating a Repel-effect in place of wholly turning encounters off? A sort of compromise for expectations of the area on-cart, but could also be a detriment in the opposite direct of Slowbro's problem, where low-level performers are hindered in ways apart from fast-leveling or grind-heavy 'mons.
That would be a neat mod: The Elite Four + Champion having full six-member teams, comprised by listing their rosters in order and assigning them respectively, making up for the champion's empty slots by his alternative rosters.
Slowbro out here zooming! Not with its speed stat of course but the end time. Great performance! Scott, will you be doing backports of Alolan, Galarian and Paldean forms? It'd be interesting how they stack up compared to the regular versions
Scott, if you backport Slowking, this would swap its defense with its special, but retaining all remaining stats. Do you think this would improve the run or make little difference? I don't even think it gains any additional moves you can take advantage of that would be worth a damn. This would be interesting.
Your comment about the red and white tiles reminded me of something. I recently watched Cyber Soldier Porygon, the episode of the anime that infamously triggered seizures in many viewers and caused the show to be placed on hiatus. (By the way, the scene at the end where Pikachu zaps the incoming missiles isn't the only instance of the flashing red and blue lights, it's just the longest. There are a few other, shorter instances earlier in the episode.) The site I watched it on also added to the end of the episode a small PSA by, if I remember correctly, a Pokémon Company spokesperson, where she explained that the seizures the episode caused were specifically because of the rapidly flashing lights, and that such issues were easily preventable by being careful with rapidly flashing lights, stripe or spiral patterns, and the color red. The "red" part especially intrigued me, because I had previously seen another of your videos where you pointed out the sensory issues posed by the red and white tiles in Cinnabar Mansion and the Gym.
Removing random encounters makes sense for getting objective times. Sure it benefits the slow pokemon more, but theoretically the fast pokemon could get an encounter every other step and the slow pokemon could go an entire floor without an encounter. Best to remove RNG where you can.
It's a good thing you streamed the first run, otherwise Slowbro's overwhelming power would have crushed it and made a second playthrough irrelevant. Clearly needed the nerf tbh.
The following is my opinion in case it is useful for feedback. Obviously you do you. I do think removing thing like encounters from the game fundementally moves your times away from which pokemon are fastest at completing pokemon yellow into which pokemon are quickest at completing your rom hack/alternate game. I don't consider there being much difference between removing encounters and removing other mechanics you don't like - accuracy is frustrating so why not remove sand attack? But I think most fundementally it means that runs from this channel are not comparable to other speed runs/challenge runners. It also means that runs from before this change are also incomparable. So in short I find this decision to be a frustrating one. I find the comment that it is 'unfair' on slow pokemon to be quite unconvincing. Although I awknowledge I'm not the one benefiting from the removal of editing.
6:13 Zubat wih Leech Seed. Happens to the best of us Scott
With Swift it's clearly the star projectiles going fast, not the Pokémon.
In Japanese it is Speed Star after all
Exactly. It’s launching projectiles, not zipping around the battlefield
He said prior, that normaly fast Pokemon get it, and slower can't learn it.
True, but generally speaking it does seem to be faster Pokemon who learn it. I bet if you got the average speed of all Pokemon and compared it to the average speed of Pokemon that learn Swift it would be the latter that's higher.
I reckon it'll be the same with Faint Attack, Aerial Ace, Shock Wave too. But Magical Leaf and Shadow Punch I think are mostly learnt by slower Pokemon.
I think the Pokémon goes really fast and the stars fly off of them and hit the other Pokémon

Amazing that Slowbro achieved such an incredible time even though it had to fight Lorelei's secret Machamp.

There is also the fact that in japanese its pretty much called Speed Star.
Even its english description is basically : Shoots starshaped Rays/Beams that are so fast they cant be evaded.

What might be more fun is to use streams to learn new games. Regarding the streaming: first, maybe they are best suited to learn the new games with a greater audience.
Well the first elite 4 member must had needed extra muscle to make up for the hiker being absent today 😂
Hay-yo, what a bro.
He's going fast by playing slow.
My other favorite Gen 1 Mon, Scott you’re too nice to me this weekend
Wow, too big surprises! Hypno and slow bro never what I thought
35:02 wait where did Lorelei's Machamp go? 😅
Can’t wait for Alakazam!
Don’t think he’ll get close to the best times, but I’m excited to see!😃
The clutch Gyarados leer at the end though!
Slowbro out here zooming! Not with its speed stat of course but the end time. Great performance!
Scott, will you be doing backports of Alolan, Galarian and Paldean forms? It'd be interesting how they stack up compared to the regular versions
Slowbro is really good! I remember Pokémon Challenges finishing nuzlockes fornBlue Kaizo and Emerald Kaizo with Slowbro
25:45 I think that might be the funniest Bruno burn yet
The chainsmokers - like the band, nickname for the two bikers
Fastbro! Faster than Gengar even; very impressive!
I love your Live Streams - You can live do your Live Streams for Rerank Pokemon ^^
Removing random encounters makes sense for getting objective times. Sure it benefits the slow pokemon more, but theoretically the fast pokemon could get an encounter every other step and the slow pokemon could go an entire floor without an encounter. Best to remove RNG where you can.
Slowbruh is my type of pokemon cause I too have the same exact face when watching videos I enjoy.
Exeggutor is going to be a rough one. If you can get it under 3 hours, i salute you. Also, i agree the emulator is pretty great.
Scot:rival is even easier in this fight because my moveset is fantastic
Also scot:spams bublebeam
It's a good thing you streamed the first run, otherwise Slowbro's overwhelming power would have crushed it and made a second playthrough irrelevant. Clearly needed the nerf tbh.
Caught that twelve-frame "Nice!"!
35:35 The crap you mean substitute? You didn’t even use mimic on that run? Lol
I like that you stop encounters on certain routes. Can you buy repels before Mt Moon?
Not in Gen 1. In Fire Red, you can
The following is my opinion in case it is useful for feedback.
Slowbro was my number 3 used pokemon in rby. Right behind venusaur and kadabra.
