It's not gonna pass emission in the EU, so only for MotoGP.
CP4 for MT10 is prolly still going to be there since it's designed for more low end torque. But they discontinued the CP4 for the R1 since high revs can't pass the emissions anymore.
I think this is the end of 1000cc 4 in line high revving engines, farewell screaming supersports.

Not sure how a V4 R1 would fail euro5+ if it’s a ground up design. They’d also price it the same to compete with the RSV4 (which also starts around 19K). I’m still waiting on CFMoto to bring out its v4 and undercut everyone.

I think a lot of people misunderstand the R9. The fact that they gave it a completely new chassis on top of adding suspension and brakes that are above even the level of an R6, says a lot about how serious they are. If they were going for a watered-down sportbike for the road, they would have simply slapped fairings on an MT09 like they did with the R7. This is absolutely intended to replace the R6 in most of the classes it races in, and some of those have already been confirmed.
At the same time, the CP3 engine makes it way more attractive to the masses, most of which spend >90% of their time on public roads and not the track. Boatloads of torque at any RPM, slightly more relaxed ergonomics (which can easily be adjusted back to R6-levels btw) and even things like cruise control are all going to help soften the blow of riding a supersport on the road and should help lure in a lot of people who would otherwise not be in the market for one.
Lastly, the CP3 has tons of potential. I suspect simply plucking it from the parts bin allowed them to hit that aggresive price point (also, 117hp is plenty for the road), but in race-spec, it shouldn't be hard to get 140-160hp out of that engine.
I think Yamaha has a real winner on their hands here, this bike has the potential to breathe some new life into the supersport class. I get that 10 more hp would have been nice, but I think Yamaha is rightfully more interested in keeping the price down and selling a lot of them.

    R9 vs. R6
117.3hp@10000rpm vs. 116.7hp@14500rpm (less stress on the engine and a lot less manic riding style)
93Nm@7000rpm vs. 61.7Nm@10500rpm (less stress on the engine and a lot less manic riding style)
11.5:1 CR vs. 13.1:1 CR (less stress on the engine and possibly more fuel options)
830mm vs. 850mm (easier to live with for anyone under 6ft)
195kg vs. 190kg (not ideal, but is that difference going to affect your riding in any substantive way...?)
more state-of-the-art electronics than one can wrap their head around vs. primitive ABS and intrusive TC (smoothness vs. choppiness)
cheaper adjusted to inflation vs. more expensive adjusted to inflation (more people can buy, ride and track it)
But I've already heard 4 journalists and 3 different publications claiming it won't hold a candle to the venerable R6. Without riding it.

Quick heads up. The frames on this may be a bit on the weak side if the higher than normal gen3/4 MT09 frame failures are anything to go by.
The frame is not similar to the old R1's rectangular hollw section, its a new monocoque type basically C section type beams with diagonal ribbing inside. Lighter and maybe stiffer but not as strong overall.
The frame breakages usually result from people fitting single mounting point sliders... so if you are going to get one and fit sliders, make sure its a double/triple mounting point type.... if such a thing is even possible on a faired bike?
