Totally agree ! Miss Battle has a beautiful voice. Velvety is the word that I also say. I have never seen her personally, only in videos, but since the first time I saw her ( 1985, Coronation Mass, St. Peter's Basilica ) , I fell in love with her. I watched the TV broadcast ( is that the correct word ? ) here in México. th-cam.com/video/64ckkiz33cU/w-d-xo.html
Miss Battle gives us a superb soprano rendition of this belovéd song, and it is one of my favorite offerings. The other is that of Bryn Terfel, whose gloriously rich and mellifluous bass-baritone voice is perfectly suited to this piece, just as is Muss Battle's crystal clear and bright soprano voice. .
The soprano voice is a wonderous instrument, in all of its many variations. I have enjoyed the performances of such legendary artists as Shirley Verrett, Barbara Hendricks, and the incomparable Jessye Norman for years. But I must say that Ms Kathleen Battle is my favorite. Her wonderous tone, and the palpable joy that she exudes in all her performances is truly extraordinary. And her physical beauty is stunning. For me, she is the greatest soprano of all time.
Gently done, with just the piano as the only instrumental lead, adding to the overall serenity of this well know of Handel's works. Kathleen Battle has a voice of remarkable quality making a super combination of joy to the ear.
Handel must have written this glorious music for the exquisitely beautiful voice of Kathleen Battle. This is a most enjoyable listening experience. Thanks to Handel and Ms. Battle. I love the beauty and simplicity of this performance,
Una voce inconfondibile, un vibrato personalissimo, una intonazione impeccabile, una eleganza riconosciuta, un orecchio musicale di gran classe, una esecuzione da artista di gran talento. Ha sempre avuto la mia ammirazione.
+Mark Savin She was so good. I got cross with her for the way she destroyed her opera career with her overweening sense of self-importance. Hmpf!! But, by golly, she can sing so beautifully! :)
Why, why, why do you people find it necessary to be constantly critical of Kathleen Battle ONLY? Go to any Callas video and no mention is made of her consistently unprofessional drunken diva fits, tantrums and conflicts with fellow cast members, musicians and conductors the world over. She is only celebrated and praised, yet in reality was a complete and total "arse"!
ChagoWilson Look at the way Madame Caballe upstaged Corelli in the finale of Don Carlos after she was fed up with his tantrums in rehearsal. The two were meant to finish on a long high note, and when he stopped, she didn't and held it for about 20 seconds.
Wonderful...sublime...If God is music...this is probably what he would sound like. Thanks for posting. I focus on the music and pay no attention to the religious connotations that are obvious. Just a musical masterpiece and nothing else matters...
Quite right, probably the setting was intelligently chosen to reflect that! Vermeer (a near contemporary of Handel) often used musical references in his subjects. The style of window and direction of the limpid light is very Vermeer. Also the purity of the singer with her contemporary but demure white gown....not to mention her stunning voice and delivery. Brava, Kathleen Battle!
This is really beautiful in just about every way. The ornaments are expressive, musical and thoroughly tasteful. I was constantly shocked and delighted from the beginning right to the end. Compare the quality and taste of this with the offensive vulgarity of a 'pop' singer.

This song was the the favourite piece of music for Karen Blixen (Out of Africa). It reminded her of her big love, who died back in Africa, Denys Finch Hatton, and it was the last piece of music, Baroness Blixen ever heard in her life, when she went to sleep for the last time, in Rungstedlund back in Denmark in 1962.

Amanda Graves - I was sitting here crying and recalling the Kathleen Battle concert to which I took my mother - a classicly trained Coloratura Soprano and pianist. I just passed the second anniversary of her death. Mom's voice was so beautiful, like Kathleen's, who is described as BOTH a Coloratura and a Lyric Soprano. I am not well educated in music and had to learn about Lyrics. They are described as able to hit highest notes, also, but they sing tenderly and gently. I believe Mom was both, too, and that is why I associate her voice with Kathleen's. I recall her telling me that a good Soprano has no vibrato and hits the highest notes softly.
lepauvrehomme I think that tenors usually sing this as the role of Jupiter in Semele is written for a tenor. Baritones often sing this in recital or in competition ( I have). I've never heard a woman sing this before, but I guess it happens and Ms. Battle has always been a favorite of mine.
Yes, women sing this piece. My Daughter just won a first for this piece today. The lady who graded her said there are only a handful who can do this and she was one of them.
Kathleen Battle's voice is so velvety and gentle to the hearing ear. No rough cutting or shrill tones. A pure delight to listen to her.
@@robertcecilmorgan-wilde Agree with you both guys. This is simply sublime
'The hearing ear'?
An interesting concept.
I'm rather pleased my seeing eye spotted that.

Kathleen Battle is one of the finest soprano voices of all time
AH-greed!
Coloratura excellence
When angels sing, it's so serene ❤️ ❤️ and beautiful.
I love the way this has been filmed like a Vermeer painting - my favourite artist, combined with one of my favourite classical singers. Superbe!
This singing is so beautiful and elegant. Sung by a poised, elegant woman.
The legato and text are immaculate. I love her variations.
Exquisite radiance and beautiful clarity of the English language and the timbre of her voice! Remarkable singing!!
Learned this at school in the sixties!
It has brought back wonderful memories. I am now 72 years old. It is amazing how I remember the lyrics😊.
75 now and feel the same way. Out of the blue I remembered a line and looked it up. Truly wonderful.
Best version ever of this piece, and I have heard many singers, men and women... she is the best to me...
I love her voice so much, so gentle, pure and clean

Sublime. Amazing. The greatest soprano ever
A beautiful rendition of this wonderful aria , well done Kathleen !
Such a wonderful voice with flawless technique
Awesome. I listen to it over and over. What an exquisite voice Kathleen and the piano playing also!
A beautiful rendition, particularly the vibrato, and with the minimum of accompaniment too!
Gently done, with just the piano as the only instrumental lead, adding to the overall serenity of this well know of Handel's works. Kathleen Battle has a voice of remarkable quality making a super combination of joy to the ear.
The ever delicate Kathleen Battle! Has never put a foot wrong and I dare anyone to give me a more divine Soprano.

No. He wrote it to be performed by a tenor.
Just beautiful! Love her ornamentation.
Exquisite! Sophisticated! Sublime! made more magical with that window on a Dutch Republic 'painted' setting. Glorious!
Just absolutely wonderful Ms Battle, thank you.
Una voce inconfondibile, un vibrato personalissimo, una intonazione impeccabile, una eleganza riconosciuta, un orecchio musicale di gran classe, una esecuzione da artista di gran talento. Ha sempre avuto la mia ammirazione.
Truly gorgeous singing. Kathleen Battle is one my favorite sopranos!

Lost for words ..........................utterly beautiful.
Isn't it lovely how she looks like a little Vermeer painting in this performance? It's the perfect match for that light, creamy timbre.
Quite right, probably the setting was intelligently chosen to reflect that! Vermeer (a near contemporary of Handel) often used musical references in his subjects. I remember when I sounded like this...singing this very song. People, if you don't use it, you'll lose it. #memories #Late1980s

With what version are you more familiar? I was only acquainted with countertenors singing this air.

Chris B It has nothing to do with technical ability, it has everything to do with the fact that the role of Jupiter is written for a man, not a woman.
The piece itself isn't difficult for a woman ! It's just unusual because it was initially written for boys !
Amazing thanks for sharing 😊👏
