I walked into a museum and saw an exquisite Renaissance or Medieval painting of a beautiful woman. The painting magically came to life and began to sing. My GOODNESS, this is breathtaking!
Mariana Ramos amen 🙌🏻 I’m performing this piece this semester and perhaps on my recital. This is one of the hardest pieces I’ve had technically! I can only hope I’m doing it justice.
Can you imagine how much practice (and divine gift) it takes to pull off this kind of perfection? Not only does the vocal delivery have to be perfect, but so do her facial expressions, movement of torso (including breathing), position of hands, style of hair, and draping of clothing. And the music, backdrop, and lighting. Just goes to show that you can create, for viewers, the impression of a masterpiece within minutes.
This is absolutely insane. The sublime rubato use she has is incrediblllllle. Especially how she slides in between notes and barely lands on time. It’s like walking on eggshells the whole time. What a beautiful rendition. My favorite is still from Ian Bostridge, but this is definitely a close second along with Marilyn Horne.
There has never been a more beautiful sound. I heard her live a few times. It was shocking how well her voice carried in the house. I wouldnt expect her velvet sound to be as present as it was. But trust me she was as at home in opera as in lieder.
Ian Bostridge, interesting comparison with her in terms of technique, and I would add ethereality of tone. Like the quality of anahata, the fourth chakra. It means "unstruck," and refers to the idea that the vibration, as if music were love, is set in motion spontaneously with nothing physical needed to strike or pluck or breathe to initiate the sound.
I wonder whose decision it was not to show the accompanist? The piano part is just as important as the vocal line in creating the magic of this beautiful song. With the support of great singers such as Fischer-Dieskau, Schwarzkopf and de los Angeles, pianist Gerald Moore fought to have the accompanist's role appreciated as equal to that of the singer. Yet here, years after the victory had seemingly been won, we're back to the bad old days with the singer hogging all the glory and the accompanist metaphorically hidden behind a flower pot.
+Suzanne Harrison As much as I completely agree with you, this is likely the fault of the video editor. Unfortunately, the fact of the matter is the attention will always be more on the soloist. Technically, too, the piano part IS an accompanying hence supporting part to the voice, so it's not really "equal." Let's just enjoy this great music and not make such a fuss. :P
The introduction is unusually slow and one fears a perfunctory interpretation but Battle floats in with utter conviction. Extremely pleasant listening, though Ameling, Fischer-Dieskau and Fleming find more depth and shade in the song. Still, this brings a worthwhile gloss to a many-faceted song.

This song is VERY technically challenging, yet she makes it sound completely effortless. Absolutely gorgeous.

I am doing this song as an 8th grader for Solo & Ensemble this year. Hopefully I can get it right.
Yes! And yet that's why it's so beautiful: it sounds so simple.

Hard to think of a more soulful and accomplished vocal performance - and just an incredible song
Heil'ge Nacht, du sinkest nieder!

Rufen, wenn der Tag erwacht:
Kehre wieder heil'ge Nacht,

My goodness! I have never seen and heard such perfection!
She did a superb recording of this piece and others in a CD of Schubert lieder with James Levine at the piano, for DG records. Absolutely stunning.
Larry was Battle’s primary accompanist, along with many other of the world’s leading singers. A beautiful, amazing musician.

SUBLIME
EXCELLENT ONLY EXCEENT

I used to wonder how the same nation could produce such great beauty and such great evil, until I dared to look into my own heart: end of the mystery!

Very likely it is James Levine
It's very challenging to play that soft and with that much emotion I'm disappointed they did not include the pianist as well
yes, and mostly in these art songs where both parts are on an equal standing, it's not voice plus accompaniment, but two instruments interacting
It looks like one of those PBS/BBC type setups where they had one camera nailed to the floor.
Nacht und Träume (Schubert) arr. Cello & Piano
love me Kathleen Battle....when is this from???
1986

Could you be any more pompous or pretentious?
Easily. I also do superficiality and dulled critical faculties.
Very heartening to hear that you were only pretending to be pompous and pretentious, and have other facets to your facetiousness.
Curious as to why it's "unusually slow" when all Fleming recordings I can find take the same pace?
one fears a perfunctory interpretation, does one? I would hate to be stuck next to you at dinner party
Schubert schreibt: "Sehr langsam"...
