Rogue One was an example of what could be done with the Star Wars IP. It was well written, fitted canon, has a mixed cast, “strong female lead”… and it was good.

that was vaguest of vaguiness, because good ol' george didnt know with what source material he would want to go with, search legends and how many times the death star plans got stolen.
ofc they massacared my boy Kyle Katarn.
but somewhere out there, there is another universe where Kyle Katarn stole the Death Star plans and built up the new Jedi Order with Master Luke Skywalker.

Tarkin was, in fact, effects over another actor to create the illusion that it actually was Peter Cushing. Cushing was 64 when A New Hope came out in 1977 and passed away in 1994. He would have been over 100 when Rogue One came out.

    • @MostViewedTop40
      @MostViewedTop40 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +39

So interesting to see her reaction. I was so surprised when she didn't realise Tarkin was visual effects. Just goes to show uncanny valley can be about what you know, as well as what you see. I think it's actually a very good attempt at a CG human. There is something a little off, but it's very good.

    • @WinstonSmith19847
      @WinstonSmith19847 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

Yes the actor they used looks quite similar to Cushing already which made the transition much easier. I think he might be the same actor they put in prosthetic makeup for that scene at the end of Revenge of the Sith but they filmed him from a distance in that scene so it worked.

    • @johnplaysgames3120
      @johnplaysgames3120 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

@@MostViewedTop40 I think seeing the effect partially comes down to whether you know Tarkin is CG going into it (as you said) and partially from what kind/size of screen you're watching it on. I remember seeing it in theaters and the effect being really noticeable (though very well done, obvs) but then seeing it later on a TV at home and thinking it looked a lot better than I remembered.
As always with these characters, it's the subtle mouth movements that give it away. As good as the lip sync is, there's some very subtle movement of muscle there that doesn't quite look natural and still feels animated. That and a little bit too much (or just not quite right) gloss on the eyeballs. I also saw a comparison video where they demonstrated that part of the reason it feels "wrong" is due to the lighting. In "New Hope," all the lighting was flat. In this one, he's much more in light and shadow and that makes his face look different than you remember.
The effect that really doesn't hold up at all (imo) is Leia at the end. The tell on that one is the same one that makes so many video game characters look so wrong: There's no depth to the mouth. It looks like a projection onto a flat surface. Honestly, they would've been better off just doing a DeepFake for Leia because it would've been more believable (in fact, I saw a video a while ago where Corridor Crew or someone did that very thing and it def looked a lot better).
Either way, I'm not complaining. We've come a loooooong way from the distracting stop-motion FX of Terminator and Robocop and I'm here for it.

I really like the way Chirrut channels the force. He's not a jedi and can't use it like a jedi can, but he is clearly force sensitive. Instead of using it to flip around or throw a lightsaber or lift a starship, he instead lets if flow through him and creates literal miracles. He can fight despite being blind, he can shoot a TIE fighter out of the air, he can walk through a hail of gunfire and not get hit.
Chirrut calmly walking through a war zone is one of the most awe inspiring uses of the force I've seen since Yoda lifted the X-Wing out of the swamp on Dagobah.

@@dhavaram8064No, a few hours is very reasonable if not more. In the end of Rogue One they manage to escape being boarded and jump into lightspeed, but in the beginning of A New Hope they get chased down and boarded AGAIN because that time vader & stormtroopers made it onto the ship, in Rogue One they didnt make it on in time. It is highly unlikely that they escape, jump into lightspeed and then get chased down and boarded AGAIN with no time between. The movies look like they transition smoothly but unfortunately its just coincidentally similar scenes in the end and beginning.
The empire also couldnt track through lightspeed back then so time must have passed in order for them to locate Leia’s ship and board for the second time

But HOURS makes Episode 4 seem way more desperate and makes Leia seem way more brassy "I'm a member of the Imperial Senate on a diplomatic mission to Alderaan." What BALLS on her....just lying to Vader's face like that...20 minutes after he saw her ship jump to hyperspace. What a great addition to the Star Wars saga.

@vin9791 incorrect. They are immediately preparing the escape pods - even as they are escaping to Hyperspace - and Leia is wearing the exact same clothes as ANH.

And yes the empire CAN track through hyperspace. Rian Johnson completely screws this up in The Last Jedi. Do you even remember how the Empire found Yavin 4?!?!? They tracked the Falcon through Hyperspace!

This was the first of the a Star Wars Story based movies and it did well in 2016 but when the fanbase collectively boycotted Solo: A Star Wars Story in 2018 as a direct response to how Disney was handling the Star Wars franchise after what they chose to do to Luke Skywalker in Episode VIII The Last Jedi in 2017, Disney said they were cancelling all future star wars story movies and other projects due to "oversaturation" or too much Star Wars content.. when it was really they weren't taking responsibility for extremely poor decisions in handling the Star Wars franchise.

    • @TheRoyalFino
      @TheRoyalFino 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@TIMMAYY7 This isn't exactly true. They released a new SW movie every year from 2015-2019 and the major swing in what they were doing that changed everything was Disney+ launching and the pandemic creating a boom period for streaming. They turned Obi-Wan Kenobi, originally a movie, into a mini-series. They had movies in development with several filmmakers that didn't get off the ground (some of which due to the Pandemic). They are currently planning to release 2 Star Wars movies in 2026 (that likely won't stick but maybe it does), so clearly they didn't think 1 movie per year was too much. They just ran out of projects that were ready.

They don't know how to. Which they have clearly shown in everything not touched by Gilroy. This is his writing, as is the Andor series. And they are just not the same as the other stories Disney shat out. They actually add something of worth, like Legends used to. Everything else is either plagued by mediocrity (Filoni/Favreau) or actively mocks George's legacy (Headland/Harold).

“Wouldn’t the actor who played Tarkin be much older now?”. Actually, much deader…
Peter Cushing passed away decades before this film, so an actor of similar stature was used with Mr. Cushing’s face digitally pasted onto his.
Similar tech has been used to ‘de-age’ actors for flashback scenes in other movies (like a flashback scene in ‘X-Men 3’ featuring younger versions of Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen).
Carrie Fisher was much older at the time of this film (but still alive at least) and looked much different than her younger self. No amount of traditional makeup would have worked to recreate her look from ‘A New Hope’. So again, another actor was used with Carrie Fishers face pasted on.

Grand Moff Tarkin was played by legendary British actor Peter Cushing, who died in 1994. But they found a head mold from prosthetics made for the film TOP SECRET! and were able to CGI him over a stand in. An actor with facial prosthetics played him briefly in Episode 3.
Darth Maul surviving and the first appearance of Saw Guerra (Forrest Whitaker) were in the animated Clone Wars series. Great show.
Not sure if you also noticed that Yavin IV (planet) was the Rebel Base in the original film (Episode 4). Bail Organa (Jimmy Smits), Princess Leia's foster father and Mon Mothma, the founder of the Rebellion from Episode 6 and 3 was the lady there.
The lava planet where we see Vader is Mustafar, where Obi Wan fought Anakin and left him to die.
The Rogue Squadron is the name of the X-wing group that is prominent in episodes 4-6.
Cassian Andor has his own prequel series on D+.
"I've got a bad feeling about this" is a line used in most Star Wars films as a running gag.
They used cut dialogue from the X-wing pilots from Episode 4 in the battle in this film to help tie the two films together, as they are distinctly remembered voices.
The plot of Rogue One is recapped in the opening crawl of the original film - Episode 4 -
"It is a period of civil war.

Mon Mothma was a Senator of the Loyalist Committee, in Episode 3, and appears in Episode 4 and 6. While on Yavin 4, when you see R2D2 and C3PO, there is a loudspeaker announcement for a General Syndulla, a call for the character Hera Syndulla of Rebels animated series. You also see the Ghost, the ship she pilots in Rebels, as well as Chopper, her Droid. Many familiar faces like Red and Gold Leader from New Hope. And you have Saw from the Clone Wars and Rebels.

You could have missed A New Hope and the crawl of Empire would at least bring you up to speed on the current situation of the new movie. The same could be said for Return of the Jedi. An opening crawl could only have enhanced Rogue One. But they were trying something “different”. Nevermind that other great sci-fi movies like Blade Runner and Terminator had a few words at the beginning to explain a few ideas. They had to be “different”. 😂

I think it's interesting that Forest Whitaker plays Saw Guerrera who was a character created for the animated tv series The Clone Wars. It's rare that an original cartoon character becomes a live action character and succeeds so well. Harley Quinn would be another example.

If you are planning on branching out into the tv shows (didn’t think you would since everything on this channel has been movies), might I suggest a bit of Clone Wars animated series? Lucas was still involved at that point. It takes some time to really get going, but some of the stories are the best modern Star Wars…and it gives a lot of needs info for more recent shows and movies. It fills the gap between episodes 2 and 3. Some of the critical storylines are Ahsoka Tano, Darth Maul (end of Solo…alive and running a crime syndicate), Mandalore (home of Mandalorians (as in the TV show…you can watch the first season of that show without the backstory…but season 2 will make little sense), evolution of Anakin’s drift to the dark side, Clones all have individual personalities and backstories. Finally, the 4 episode finale is one of the best Star Wars stories ever told. Disney released a list of 20 episodes that it suggested watching before the final season and I think that list hits most of the critical plot points (and are some of the best shows of the series). Each episode is under 30 minutes, so 20 episodes isn’t that bad (and it’s mostly geared for adults, despite be a Cartoon Network animated series). Here’s the list if you are interested:
    1x01: Ambush
    1x05: Rookies
    2x05: Landing at Point Rain
    2x06: Weapons Factory
    2x07: Legacy of Terror
    2x08: Brain Invaders
    2x12: The Mandalore Plot
    2x13: Voyage of Temptation
    3x02: Arc Troopers
    4x21: Brothers
    4x22: Revenge
    5x06: The Gathering
    5x01: Revival
    5x14: Eminence
    5x15: Shades of Reason
    5x16: The Lawless
    5x17: Sabotage
5x18: The Jedi Who Knew Too Much
    5x19: To Catch a Jedi
    5x20: The Wrong Jedi
    …and season 7 episodes 9-12.

My favorite parts from a special on the making of this film was they brought in a gal to do the final retouching of CGI Peter Cushing and she said, "Why are they being so picky on this poor old actor?" She didn't realize she was retouching a CGI. Leia was also CGI, and when Carrie saw the last scene she remarked, "I don't remember filming that last shot." I liked also that they used Blue Squadron all getting killed, so there's no Blue Squadron in Star Wars when they attack the death star, and Red 5 is killed here, thus Luke takes the empty Red 5 spot.

    • @Calamity_Jack

No disrespect meant to anyone, but I find that surprising. I immediately spotted the CGI faces when I saw them, especially Carrie Fischer's, which I thought looked quite bad in the movie. Cushing's face was relatively better, but again, I very quickly recognized it was CGI. Maybe it was just me, though.

I saw this in a theater on a Saturday in Columbia, SC. Afterwards, I was in the men’s bathroom crying my eyes out because I loved it that much. Everything about it felt like it was part of the original trilogy and especially Episode 4. I loved how they used the clip from Episode 4 of the X-Wing pilots reporting in before the attack on the Death Star for the attack on Jetta. It was soo good. But the scene with Vader at the end was beyond words. It was like watching Jason Voorhees at work. That final shot with him warching the Rebels escape with the start of the Imperial March gave me goosebumps.
A couple of years ago, REELZ did a show about Star Wars where they talked about that scene. After Star Wars took off, Vader became very marketable and was used in commercials and what not. The thought was that he was no longer that scary individual he had been. In order to make it true to his initial character, the writers realized they needed a scene were he was that terrifying villain he had been especially since it was just before Episode 4. They did just that.

Great reaction Coby like always. This was such a great movie, hands down one of my favorites to watch. I get tears every time near the end. The thing I love about the name "Rogue One" as a retcon, is that after Luke and Wedge etc blow up the Death Star the remains of their squadron are renamed to "Rogue Squadron", you see in Empire Strikes Back that their callsigns are "Rogue Two" and "Rogue Leader". So retroactively, it's like the squad that took down the Death Star were named in honour of the squad that died to get them the plans that made it possible.
That Vader hallway scene is iconic in two ways. One being, that up until this moment. The sheer ferocity of Darth Vader was only whispered about. How ferocious he was in battle. But those fifteen minutes did everything we wanted. He took the Rebels apart. And the look of terror in their eyes said it all. This is Darth Vader. Dark Lord of the Sith.
Love Alan Tudyk as K2S0. Anthony Daniels was so uncomfortable in the C-3PO costume & jokingly cursed Alan. After Rogue One's premiere. Tudyk later said that a "Fu*k you" from Daniels was one of the highest compliments he had ever received.
There are some fun-facts, This movie had a pretty extensive amount of reshoots and while the film is amazing there were a few things cut out that I think would have made the film even better! One of the things that I wish hadn’t been cut out was Moroff’s (The tall white furry creature that is from gigoran species that we see when they are taking the pilot to see Saw Gerrera) from presence on Scarif. Moroff is one of Saw Gerrera’s Partisans and a behind-the-scenes photo seems to show the character on Scarif. It would have been so cool to see him and possibly other Partisans fighting alongside the Rebellion. Keep up the good work.

This is 19 years after Revenge of the Sith. The beginning is 6 years after.
The black armored troopers are specially trained ones called Death Troopers. They also received surgical enhancements
Cassian shot his contact because he wasn’t gonna be able to escape with his messed up arm. He would’ve been captured and likely tortured for information. You can’t stay clean in a war.
Wait, so were you thinking Leia was gonna be a major part of the movie? I suppose that’s an understandable assumption
Saw Gerrera is actually a Clone Wars character. He was quite younger. Been fighting for a while.
Chirrut is more attuned to the Force than most but not enough to be classified as force sensitive. He can’t use it like a jedi, no mind tricks, no telekinesis, etc. He mastered a martial art that allegedly allowed its users to alter their heart rate and oxygen intake, giving them almost supernatural abilities.
The Tarkin actor is new, but they recreated Peter Cushing’s face over his with motion capture CGI. AI effects have barely started being used in movies recently, and hopefully they stop being used, or at least in a way that still allows work for real people.
On top of not having much of himself left, Saw also probably would’ve slowed them down, and he wouldn’t want to do that. And he recognizes that he’s kind of become a monster.
Indeed James Earl Jones returned to voice Vader again, which is always great. He sounds different due to age.
The name Rogue One was in Legends material as an alternate call sign for Rogue Leader of Rogue Squadron, but I don’t recall it being said in the original trilogy. Retroactively in Canon, Rogue Squadron/Group from the original trilogy was named after the crew, and Luke ordered that the designation of Rogue One be retired in their honor. Thus they used Rogue Leader instead.
A reference to 3PO? Wait, have you never clocked that someone always says “I have a bad feeling about this”?
    • -I don’t think 3PO has ever said it in the films- 3PO does say it in Return of the Jedi but it’s not an iconic line specific to him
The “mustardy” 😂 colored troopers are new. They’re called shore troopers, or coastal defender stormtroopers
Gold Leader’s appearance was actually upscaled unused footage from New Hope
They also CGId Leia’s face. It wasn’t Carrie herself. Though she was shown the scene prior to her passing, and she liked it
