I have always had a great admiration for this player, since his Fiorentina era (I'm italian and AC Milan supporter), I don't need to tell you how happy I was when we buyed him...
I remember of him not only for his incredible technic, power, speed, skills, elegance, class, vision of the game and great goals...but also for his calm, his education, his fair play, his respect for the others and his professionalism...
I don't remember him having ever an argue, or fighting, or getting a yellow or a red card for bad behaviour or something like that.
I don't care if he has been underrated or not...the only thing I know is that he has always been an example to follow in my life, a serious man with a good personality!

100% agree. I'm a portuguese Benfica fan because of two players, João Vieira Pinto and Rui Costa. But Rui...is what you wrote. Class, calm, education, fair-play and respect. I'm wish I could have saw the best years of him at Benfica (the early 90's). The Maestro, for life.

Rui Costa's most impressive trait was his shooting from an almost standing position. I remember that very vividly. He could unleash a thunderous shot just about from anywhere over the opponents' half, without having to get any galloping behind the shot or even a couple of steps at times.

My favourite player ever. I was fortunate enough to see him live a few times. I watched most of Benfica, Fiorentina, Milan and Portugal matches throughout the years because of his football. One of the smartest to have ever played the game. He conducted himself with fair play and respect for the opposition. He ALWAYS found a way to fool defenders and facilitate the decision of his teammates, allowing them time and space to continue or finish the play he had created. He was an architect of the game. Sometimes I wished he had scored more goals, but he was the king of assists and put the team above all interests -- A stellar football legend ⚽❤️

Sou um portista orgulhoso de o ser, mas não tenho pejo em dizer que Rui Costa é o meu jogador preferido de sempre. À frente de Figo e Ronaldo (atenção: preferido não quer dizer que o considere melhor que estes 2 últimos). Adorava vê-lo jogar. Pura classe, talento, magia, visão de jogo, passe, dribles, tudo. Para mim estava ao nível de Zidane e acima do Deco (grande lenda do meu FCP e enormíssimo número 10 também).

@Mário Gama Eu não estou de acordo. De facto ele não era um portento de força, mas Rui Costa tinha uma visão e inteligência de jogo e uma técnica que compensavam a sua falta de força. Ele dava-se mesmo ao luxo de se aventurar em posições de um extremo e cruzar como um figo ou Beckham. Penso que ele não dava hipóteses às defesas contrárias, porque ele sabia precisamente e perfeitamente como, onde e a quem deixar a bola. Sorte tiveram o Benfica, Fiorentina e AC Milan:) o meu Porto teve direito a Deco, Lucho, James Rodriguez, Herrera e Oliver Torres que eram bem bons.. kkkk

Such an underrated player. If he was in Real Madrid or Barcelona he would be remembered today as one of the best by much more people. Still, one of the best 10´s I´ve seen playing the game and I haven´t seen a player like him in the field for many many years.

Seria A was so iconic, Rui Costa, Zidane, Veron, Totti, Del Piero, Maldini, even Ronaldo played there in the 90s.
Him and Paulo Sousa are close to the most underrated players in history. Paulo Sousa won champions league one season, then moved to another club in another league and won it with that club. Sadly blighted by injuries after that.
great comment... few ppl know how incredible Paulo Sousa was. This comes from a die hard Benfica fan that saw Paulo leave Benfica for rival Sporting. But one thing is to hate the guy another is to speak football language. If not for the injuries, Paulo would be one of the best 6 that ever played the game. What made him one of the best 6 were 2 simple skills, positioning and passing. He just didnt need to run, he was always one step ahead of everyone in the field. Anyway, still hate the guy, he's a fucking cunt :)
Rui Costa was one of the smoothest natural players of all time. His shooting, ball control and passing skills was from another planet. He would glide around players like a ballet dancer. His ball control and shooting technique was special.

very. Everyone is remembering Eusebio, Figo, or Ronaldo, and - while I haven't watched Eusebio playing because I wasn't born at that time - I did watch Figo and Penaldo close enough to be able to say that Portugal's best player of all times and the real number 10 has been Rui Costa, not anyone else. His ease of controlling the ball, or finding breaches in the enemy defenses and creating scoring opportunities out of nothing is out of this world. Actually, you can see in this clip what I mean. The OP did a great job at compiling the best of Rui, and you can see how easy it is for him to dribble 2,3, even 4 players at a time and make that perfect pass for Shevchenko and Inzaghi. Truly a magician on the pitch.

fully agree with you. Rui is the only Portuguese player that I really like, and ever liked. Granted, I haven't seen Eusebio play because I wasn't born at the time he has been at the peak of his career, but after Eusebio I have watched all of Portugal's greatest: Figo, Couto, Penaldo, Rui, etc. And of all these - otherwise big names - Rui has been the closest you can get to a football magician. I'm so glad that I've watched him play for Milan in an age when I have been a die-hard Milan fan, and so sad that Berlusconi couldn't find a way for both him and Pirlo to play. I don't remember if this is true or not, but if I remember correctly this is the reason he has left Milan (because Pirlo would take his place into the starting XI), and it's understandable for a player like Rui to feel offended by benching him. Too bad we couldn't see both him and Pirlo on the pitch. What a time that would have been! :)

Very true. I had a couple of spells living in Italy in the late 90s and early 2000s, so saw him in the flesh playing for Fiorentina and Milan. What a player... there were three I remember watching in that era and thinking "I would pay the entrance fee alone to watch him play...", Rui Costa, Ronaldo and Zidane. He really is up there with the best of them.
As an Englishman abroad, I used to think he was a mix of the best of Glen Hoddle and Chris Waddle... those of you in the know will recognise that as a huge compliment. Great vision, sublime skill, mesmeric dribbling, surgical passing, spectacular finishing....

I was very little but I remember when he played against Benfica in Lisbon. Benfica lost that match. He scored and started crying and the whole stadium was cheering him on we never forget our own you can find that on TH-cam he was playing for Fiorentina at the time. He's the reason I always like Fiorentina and AC Milan

i miss rui costa and figo on the national team. those two resurrected the portuguese national team. they brought back pride, confidence and belief that we could win in the fans. without them, there would be no cr7 or the other great players we have now.

Rui Costa may have just been the very best of the modern era in the Trequartista role. A generational once in a while talent. Didn't win a Ballon d'Or or FIFA WPOTY award yeah...but, in a vacuum, on several accounts, was more proficient then a Modríc, Zidane, Kaká, Ronaldinho, Nedved, Baggio, or Platini, in that specialist role.
As a youth soccer coach also, I can tell you that you can't teach kids the vision, work rate, footwork, timing, and instincts that Rui Costa had in soccer academies. You can only teach them how to bring it all together and apply it with the grit and pace required to be successful at the competitive and pro levels. This stuff is developed in unstructured environments without refs, schemes etc. where the beautiful game truly flourishes...

Personally I think Messi and Ronaldo would be able to succeed in 90s. Ronaldo is an better Inzaghi. And well Messi is the closed we can get to a modern day 90s number 10. But they’d need to change certain aspects of there game to truly be on top in the 90s in my opinion.
