      @Neo Varley Downes It is the nature of sports that today's greats are greater in absolute terms because they stand on the shoulders of giants. The truly great ones take the innovations of the past and improve on them. I agree with everything you say until the very end. I have never seen anyone but Messi to consistently getting past so many players attacking him at the same time. And I've seen the old reels, and watched Maradonna, Platini, Rummenigge and other greats play entire matches. They were my idols. But nobody holds a candle to the dribbling of Messi.

      @@robeltonicholas2350 I would add to it the fact that those greats hadn’t face an indestructible mountain of man like chiellini , or ramos , or that freak called van dijk , and the list goes on to show that there is an art to defending that was evidently lacking in the past .

    • @azharpinara2128
      @azharpinara2128 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Neo Varley Downes just like you say it’s impossible to compare player from different era then why are you judging that messi is not greater than garrincha,maradona,cruyff and best it’s your opinion people can say i like this or that but you are saying like you would love to play on this pitch and your granny would do whatever you said if a player did something than his name will be remembered for the decades or centuries whatever and by your logic if messi the best player of this generation is not much worthy of the appreciation he is getting for his dribbles and play than the other footballer of the last couple of decades would be nothing in yours i guess they are nothing in your eyes and like you are saying you would be better than most of todays player there are lot of things to be taken into consideration when talking about the goat debate just like the way you said messi can’t play in those era of 60,70 or 80 or wouldn’t be great in those era then how could you say that best garrincha maradona or whatever player would be able to play in this generation different generation have their different advantage like older generation they might be tougher and i also think that people of older generation are physically and mentally stronger but that also apply to individuals if that time defending was that good that why those defender are not very well known to todays generation like we heard the name of pele maradona garrincha cruyff best rummenigee van basten why are not so many defenders are well known the only defender name is known in todays people eye is franz beckenbauer even if we agree that time defending was tough than i this decade man marking of a player is much better than the older generation because today every single movement a player does on the pitch can be captured or recorded and a coach or player take a note of that and understand the style of a player and plan accordingly even after that in this generation teams and coaches have tried many times to stop messi and failed many time even his dribbling style is not fancy and not as skilful as other greats of last 2 decades likes of dinho,neymar,r9 iniesta zidane he doesn’t copy anyone he uses his very simple dribbling move by keeping the ball closest to the feet like no one does and if you watch honestly you will be agreed on that most of the footballer or expert says that the ball is so close to his feet like it is glued to his feet cruyff said about him he will be the player with the most ballon dor in the history 5,6,7 now he has 7 its now just about 7 ballon dor he is the football goat and is said by someone who watch pele and maradona play and talking about the pitch of that time so uncle if you play on a carpet pitch then your ability is judge more carefully because the pitch is flat its up to you how you move the ball the way you will treat the ball then the ball will respond accordingly. And who knows how messi would have played if born in 1960,70 or 80 or whatever era who know how maradona would have played in todays anyone can judge but nobody can guarantee you who would have been better if could able to swap their generation the first thing you said that we can’t compare player from different generation so you or anyone can say that messi would not be able to play that great in those era so leave it as it is if a player is greater in older generation than their must be a reason same goes to this generation if a player is greater in this generation than also must be a reason if people take’s your logic into consideration than if messi is not better than garrincha cruyff best and you said even your granny can play on todays pitch and also you can play than in your opinion all the players of last 2 decades who played on better pitches are all trash. Many people said pele and their brazilian colleagues play in their backyard defender were very bad that doesn’t changed that fact that he isn’t one of the goat playing for whole life in brazil doesn’t make his less yes he had one of the greatest int team of all time i know garrincha was also from that era but did everyone from his brazil teams scored the amount of goals pele scored why people bring his name into debate because he has done something which not everyone in his team did and garrincha mostly talk about when there is a debate of dribbling than he must have been great in dibbling and people talk about messi when there is a debate on dribbling so there must be a reason you can’t say pitch is good thats why he is able to beat player after player and people talk about messi when there is a debate on goals and assists. People also talk about messi when there is a debate on passing and playmaking when talking about dribbling you said about pitche what about passing just watch his passing and playmaking his weight on the pass curl on the passing he won the best playmaker award 4 times thats not a coincidence and not only for simple passing just watch him play and one last thing messi is always talk about when there is a goat debate and in my opinion he along with his fellow country mate are two greatest football player of all time messi&maradona two Argentinian left footed geniuses .

      @azharpinara2128 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Neo Varley Downes you first said in your first comment that i don’t like to compare player from different but after that you start comparing player from different era you didn’t say this is better than that but you did compare them indirectly by saying todays pitches are carpet and talk about rules regulations and so on and will you give as a fact that messi wouldn’t be able to do as much in old era which he has done in this era no one can give that kind of a statement as a fact because nobody knows what cruyff best pele maradona or whatever player would have done in this era they will be as good as messi or not and you also said that oh my gran could do what has done on todays fact as if playing on todays surface is that easy and yes you did judge players from different era i read every single word you say and its not only me who just commenting about a player there are many players from those era and specially great players and expert said about messi that he is better than pele maradona and even player from pele and maradona era who see pele and maradona play have said that messi is better than pele and maradona and when you talk about stats you gave me the example of gerd muller messi break his record for most goals in a calendar year and also messi is not only a goal scorer because gerd muller was a pure striker and messi has more goals and way more assists than gerd muller infact most assists in the history of football and not only that you can watch him play watch his footage dribbling passing playmaking goal scoring just check his passing videos and his vision he is a forward right winger yet his passing is equal to the best of the best midfielder his playmaking his vision is one of the best in history people say xavi or iniesta was there for him but he was the one who complete that trio messi,xavi and iniesta and he is different from other player because what xavi and iniesta could do he can also do that and he has done it and prove it he can play tiki taka with them he can play tiki taka with ney and suarez or dani alves he can pass or playmake like xavi and iniesta and also xavi and could dribble and they were great in tight possession but messi was better in dribbling and tight possessions xavi and iniesta can not score so much goals like him but he did score many the thing is what xavi and iniesta have done he did that as well and he is still doing and he is even better but what messi has done they didn’t and can’t do and yet he broke the record for the most goals in a calendar year infact from feb 2012 to feb 2013 he scored 100 goals for club and country he scored 91 goals and provide 30+ assists but did gerd muller have provide that many assists apart from his 85 goals in a calender year you just need to watch him play or if you have watched him play from last 6 or seven forget about before that if you just have watched his last 6,7 years than you probably known that how good he is and yes I would say in my opinion but most of the old players coaches expert also said the same that he is the goat gary linekar have played him but he said messi is as good as maradona if not better van basten have said about messi that if someone say ronaldo is better than messi then they don’t know anything about football because football is much more than goal scoring football is joy and messi is joy to watch not only in my eyes there are many nobody will chant your name in every match nobody will bow down you in everymatch unless you have done something which is extraordinary i have never seen people chanting a player name in every match not only for his scoring for his dribbling his passing vision playmaking and i also forgot about his free kick ability he has many abilities and in those ability he is with the best of the best and also i am not a biased fan i watch r9,cr7,dinho, maradona and many players nobody is as complete player as messi because he is joy goal scorer passer playmaker set piece taker but after watching maradona i also started to admire him for me he is just same as messi but his career is cut short because of the issues outside the field but his dribbling passing vision also same as messi his finishing ability was also great but he played mostly bit deeper than messi in ss or amf role but his finishing was also very good and i forgot one thing which you said about rules if you talk about rules and pitches than the older era has also big advantage because na var and before no replay and i know that beckenbauer was dmf but he was best known for central defender his passing range was good

    I was taken to my first professional game by my father in 1964 ( Chelsea 0 v Man Utd 2 ) and the greatest dribbler I have seen since then was George Best. He had incredible balance and seemed to be able to glide over the "glue pot" muddy pitches of the day ( unlike the bowling green pristine pitches modern players benefit from ) and had to contend with vicious tackles from behind. A true genius. Whether you can say any of these players were the best of "All Time" is a bit superfluous as there is very little or no footage of football players from the early part of the 20th century up to the 1950's. Players such as Stanley Matthews were heralded as "the Wizard of the dribble". Better to say they were the best of their time.

    • @Wanbon1
      @Wanbon1 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I thought exactly the exact thing as you, I,ve played on heavy puggy pitches no comparison , on top of that the ball weighed a ton being wet and muddy best was the best in my opinion , puts these prima Donna,s to shame, and as you said absolutely hacked to pieces but didn,t go down at the first chance..

    • @straypass
      @straypass ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I remember the heavy footballs which when wet doubled in weight ( no wonder a lot of those older ex players suffered dementia ) . I played semi pro in the late 60's early 70's and was a forward. The legacy from that is I have had one full knee replacement and another expected and shins show the holes from the over the top tackles with metal studs. Men were men no rolling about feigning injury in those days @@Wanbon1

    • @ntambua_mbombo_official
      @ntambua_mbombo_official ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Are you talking about rough tackles? Do you know many awful tackles did Pelé, Maradona and Messi endured? Pitches were bad for defenders as well. When you have to defend on a pot holed pitch with the ball bumping into holes and changing detection it's not easy to defend. Sometimes you can get injured just by the pitch. So don't try to find excuses for Best because Pelé, Garrincha played in the same conditions.
      Today players like Messi are studied using technology, how he carries the ball, how he moves and so forth, it's not easy to surprise people who have been studying your playing style for years.

    • @straypass
      @straypass ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Not sure where you are coming from in your summation about defenders and "pot holed " pitches I would just like to emphasise that Pele thought George Best was the greatest player he ever saw ( George Best was the greatest footballer I ever saw and played the game more like a Brazilian than a European. It is one of football's biggest disappointments that our paths never crossed when we were at our peak.) It's just a matter of fact that up to recent times when grass and pitch technology greatly improved (along with the footballs used ) that in Britain and Northern Europe which suffer from heavy rainfall, frost and snow during the
      winter months often pitches were a sea of mud how footballers of that era ( attackers and defenders) managed to play any decent football was a tribute to them . I would also point out that Pele and Garrincha played all their club football in Brazil apart from Pele having a short stint with New York Cosmos before he retired. I wonder how they would have coped having to play in wet, freezing cold Manchester in the middle of February in the 50's and 60's and being hacked from behind by the likes of Norman Hunter and Ron "Chopper" Harris ?@@ntambua_mbombo_official

Maradona played on pitches that looked like they'd suffered an artillery strike, he played against some of the greatest all time defenders in their prime, and he played in some of the most aggressive defensive leagues in the world like the Argentine Primera División, and Seri A in the 80s, where tackles from behind were allowed and defenders got away with shirt pulling and hacking down dribblers like it was going out of fashion, yet despite all that, I've still not seen a player dribble as well as Maradona in his prime-and yes that includes Messi. i think R9 deserves 1st position if we talk about dribbling skills, his movements are very natural and elegant, his elastico and step over are also special and incredibly fast as he can change between left or right foot while dribbling the ball because he can do dribble not only with his right foot but also with left foot, and lastly he was a nightmare for the big name defenders and goal keepers at that time with the fact that he made 88 goals by rounding the goal keepers and gave people who watched him play the feeling of joy everytime he touched the ball in the field

      @@crackerzoom8424exactly. Messi was the most efficient, the most proficient. He also had strong longevity. Other fans say the others are better when their prime lasted only about 3-10 years. From the age of 19 till today even at 37, Messi has haunted defenders. They say defenders of those days were brutal, but forget how many times many defenders tried to break Messi's legs but failed miserably. They just can't quit the nostalgia and admit. Messi was the best player at tight spaces too, and they call it just running. He wasn't about showing off skills, he was about piercing through players like knife in butter and he did it for more than 15 years consistently.

      Every era has its difficulties. Current defenders are way better (in every aspect, and by far) than Maradona's era. More technical, more physically apt, better prepared physically and mentally. Also modern defensive tactics are also way way better than Maradona's era, don't get confused. On the other hand, like you mention, in Maradona's era tackling was I think at the height of its brutality (hence the rule changes) because defensive tactics had evolved and defenders started to be better prepared (you couldn't just throw some bully at the position anymore). Defending was now considered the base for a good attack (this is why people confuse with "this era defending was the hardest one", which is totally WRONG). Also the pitches were much worse, making ball control more difficult.

    • @paschoalopoulos
      @paschoalopoulos 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      @@m0skit0 it is very common to see those arguments - someone shone in harder conditions or, reversely, that a current player would've been god in the older days - but none of that really makes sense, for me.
      Maradona played the best players of the world, at his time. people say "oh, If Maradona played today, etc...", please stop there. If Maradona played today, he would have eaten different food. He would likely be taller, stronger, faster and more resistant. He would've trained his fundamentals with even more sophisticated resources, and so he would be an even more refined player. Defenders would be better, still, they would be up against an even more absurd development of Maradona. The same goes for Pele, Garrincha (imagine this one having big sponsors fighting his alcoholism).
      The reverse of this thought is also true. "If Cristiano Ronaldo played in the 60's..."... Well, maybe he would be 1,70m tall and not the role-model for a fitness diet. Most likely, on the eve of a big game, he would be drinking beer, eating barbecue and smoking cigarettes...

    I find this video very accurate if we consider the different eras in
    which the players have played. The only thing I disagree with is the
    fourth position for Luis Nazario da Lima, who I think should be at the
    top of the ranking (perhaps the first place is contested with Messi).
    Ronaldo may have been inferior to the other players on the list in other
    aspects, but the effectiveness of his dribbling, the consistency with which he was
    able to get himself in front of the goalkeeper in any situation, making
    legends like Baresi, Nesta, Maldini and the cream of Serie A's golden
    era powerless, still remains a mystery to me

      exactly, I would say what separates Ronaldo's dribbling from the rest, is that he had this unique style where he always ran at the defenders and somehow went through them. Other players always go around defenders, but Ronaldo seemed to go through them with sheer speed and effective skill moves
