You could say that sponge knew the princess was dead all along, and dreading the reality, his crushing guilt was expressed as a morbid fantasy world. It all makes sense, since the player gets to see princess bleach lying prone but she gets swallowed by the physical representation of death right in front of sponge, as though he watched her die before his eyes somehow. He struggles with this manifestation of death that consumed his beloved, dealing with it. It comes back though, on a vine shroom somewhere high up. When sponge wins the battle, he doesn't win anything, he's just sad and tired after his long psychological journey.
