I was a fisheries observer on a 50m Spanish trawler working near the Grand Banks (nr where Titanic reportedly went down) June-Sept 2001. Recording what the lads caught, location, how much etc for NAFO (North Atlantic Fisheries Organisation). They were looking for Greenland halibut. They couldn't fish there without being observed to try and preserve the stock after the relatively recent collapse of the cod industry through over fishing. We left from Vigo empty, took 10-12 days to steam across. It was a tough experience even as just an observer. They towed for 12 hours in 1100-1400m water, it took over an hour to haul the net to the surface. They used two nets, straight after the first net was hauled up they sent the next net one over the side before processing the catch. The organisation/team work required to perform that task safely was extremely difficult and challenging. Crew standing within 5m of an open stern under blinding float lights often in driving rain, on a moving platform routinely at night. It was like watching an F1 pit crew working in slow motion. Any slip over the side and the chances of recovery in 4C water before death was slim at best. Add to that thick fog for days, like living inside a ping pong ball for 3 days at a time, followed by the most amazing sun set ever seen. Being in a situation where i was largely ignored by a Spanish speaking crew who didn't like me recording their catch, not having communication for home (2001), changed me. I needed a few weeks back on land, seeing random people, being able to move around unrestrictedly, able to interact normally again. But reasonably good money, tax free and i got 3 days holiday in St Johns so can't complain. Got back 2 days before 9/11..
i am 72 years old and i just fell in love with Scintilla Maris . she is just beautiful in every way . every detail is perfect and the amount of work and effort that went in to fitting her out must have been monumental. she is just awesome in every way . she is truly the best that money can buy. i guess i can dream.
That new technology on that older ship blew my mind, there was no skimping back on anything. I see some ppl saying it looks plain, but they have no clue about the quality of tech, and steel trawlers seaworthiness. This ship/yacht is like a blank canvas with everything else being thought of at the highest quality, not fancy carbon, or fiberglass and glass ice chandeliers. This is actually a real ship, tried and proven already, all the bells and whistles are on the important parts, the nav, and other systems.
I really appreciate that you include deck plans in your videos. I can pause the video, zoom, in and look at the amazing naval architecture involved. I wish more yacht channels did this. Thanks for another fantastic viideo.
Ok, THIS is absolutely AMAZING. This is the most incredible yacht I have ever seen in my life . Just mind blowing! It’s a tad odd looking from the outside but that interior, wheelhouse and engine room just blew me away. Thanks for the tour of lovely yacht!
yeah I'm really curious who looked at an old trawler and thought "I'm gonna turn that into a mobile luxury condo" I also loved the nice touch of the model of the ship from when it was still a fishing trawler
I didn’t think that this boat would ever look like this after watching the first video but was I wrong! This is beautiful and well thought out. The craftsmanship is amazing 😊
Good looking vessel. I particularly like the glass skylights though I rely on Damen to ensure that they are safe and leak proof. I am sorry that the crew quarters remain doubles even though permitted by IMO. I would have hoped that they could have found space for 4 extra singles. As a former crew member singles are definitely preferable. The bridge is remarkable. The automation is excellent. I was shocked by the range difference under Tier 3. I don’t understand why such a difference. My itinerary would sail from Europe to Newfoundland to the Caribbean to Panama to Galapagos to Peru to Easter island to Tahiti to Vanuatu to Papua New Guinea to Phuket to Sri Lanka to Goa to Mombasa to Djibouti to Suez to Santorini to Malta to Ibiza to Puerto Banus to Gibraltar to Azores to New York.
So much more impressive and rewarding than billionaire party yachts (floating obscenities). A vessel like this can be repurposed over and over and serve many roles and have a long service life.
I have been waiting and waiting for this one, and I have to say thank you for following through and posting a video of the finished product as promised. There's a lot of TH-camrs that will post vids at the beginning of a build and leave us all hanging.... much appreciated. This boat is definitely something special and it's most definitely a maze on the inside, but it also is a machine that will take it's lucky owners and guests to the end of the earth and back again in safety and comfort. It's also way out of my price range! Thanks again, and keep the vids coming and I'll keep watching!
This video came across my feed. I’m so glad it did. Your yacht is breathtakingly beautiful. It has that futuristic vintage look. Beautiful lines. You are taking a ship That was already a beauty and making her glamorous.
The skylights are a cool thought but someone could be walking on deck and see straight into the cabins.. and when the crew has to sleep during the day they’ll need to cover them or something. They should’ve done some built in shades for them or at least made them a frosted glass.
You like your non " cocktail" yacht visits. Form and function yacht. That galley and dinning room is special. The form and function of her is also comfortable and with safety in mind as in the all of the ships areas.
Absolutely stunning! And unbelievable, definitely prefer rebuild to new ( Authenticity )and this rebuild is definitely as good as it gets, the skylights are amazing especially the big one under the circular table top. Could go on forever but thank you for sharing this one. WoW!
Yeah, I really have no words and I have been in control and command centers of offshore production and drilling platforms. What an awesome vessel. Congrats to the owner.
Youve just become my favorite TH-cam binge. These vessels are just dreams, and are inspiring thoughts for the future. Loving the commentary and your passion for them. One of these days...perhaps we'll connect
She's beautiful. Looks like she'd take a LOT of crew to manage, but if you can afford to keep nine or ten people on full time staff just to keep your boat running, she'd be a load of fun. Only thing I can think of that I would change if she were my boat (and presuming that I could afford her) would be to knock out that master stall shower and put in a good deep bathtub instead. With the amount of fresh water that watermaker can produce, it would be plausible to use properly; and it's my personal ultimate luxury/comfort item. I like the lack of opulence in the rooms. I've always felt that I would be a little uncomfortable with lavish luxury... I prefer physical comforts and quiet unobtrusiveness, and that's what I see in the design on this boat. I can certainly imagine people who would look at it in consternation for that, and wonder where all the bells and whistles are; but I would enjoy it just the way it is. Well, except for that bathtub. 🛁
John, very impressive refit. Unbelievable bridge setup. The only bridge I've been on that was more impressive was on NCL cruise ship M/V Seaward back in 1989 while working on board as a subcontractor. I was on the bridge 3 times while working on the teak decks.
A superb account of this magnificent trawler/superyacht, delivered with the excellence that we have learned to accept as normal from YachtBuoy. Thank you.
It was good you have filmed this video on a sunny day. I can’t imagine being onboard with choppy seas or in a gale storm, but that’s what this ship is purposed for.
Well thought out, planned and engineered conversion. Again, another world-class yacht by the Dutch. Anytime, anywhere journey. Let's head to Patagonia and Antarctica. Then, to Hobart, Tasmania.
Its always neat to see these old girls get a makeover and a new life. I particularly like the oceangoing tug conversions, they're built to withstand anything, but we forget how tough, heavy, sturdy and beamy trawlers are as well. What I'm surprised at is the lack of luxury in the guest cabins. They're very bland, and the boat has an air of being built for work, which, while its first life was only work, with all the money I'm sure went into the refit, I'd think they could've spent a little more for some color in the rooms, the all white and gray makes it feel like a prison cell.
Beautiful ship, I'm no naval architect but those cut away/recessed bulwarks with boarding access port and stbd. don't make a lot of sense to me, very little freeboard and in any kind of sea state I'd imagine a hindrance to the vessel, just looks wrong. Like I said I'm no expert but if something doesn't look right it normally isn't, very odd to me to compromise the freeboard and hydrodynamics of the hull with a gimmick of convenience on what is otherwise apparently a very sea capable vessel, in a big, confused seastate with breaking swells I'd prefer as much freeboard as possible. PS I haven't seen the previous video on the modifications and refit, maybe I should?? Bridge is exceptionally well equipped, but that counts for nothing IMO with those oddities just above the waterline
I agree about the hull modification. What struck me instantly was to think of how inviting it would be a few armed Somalians types for a spot of tea and financial discussion.
Those recesses bring the gross tonnage under 500 GT so saves a lot of rules to apply to and they make great access for ribs if you noticed the way the bullwarks are constructed these recesses don't compromise the seaworthiness
This Boat is more than a Dream. The Helm is like a mini USS Enterprise, Lol. Are you kidding me,The capability of this boat is so awesome,To have it as a private vessel, Man oh Man. I would not ever leave that boat.lol. Fantastic Video.thank you Sir. Well done. haha.I made that comment and then resumed watching and You said the same thing.. The Enterprise.Lol
Truely unique! As a retired Naval Officer, this is one of the nicest yachts I've seen ... such a great conversion, and that Pilot House, jaw dropping!!
It is so heart-warming to see these old hard-working seagoing ships retire into a life of luxury who still have the stamina to shame youngsters in any seas
Ok, I have to say that although I’m impressed with the design and build, it would have to be a particular person to buy a vessel like this ; it’s not for everyone. Like its original design, it’s utilitarian, I wouldn’t say it’s beautiful. I’m glad I stumbled across your TH-cam channel as I’m interested in all things nautical. Keep on keepin on.
Some people have their ships built to impress other people. Only using the ship to party… And some want a real ship! That can get you a real nautical experience!
Absolutely excellent video as usual. Now. I have never seen anything like this before. Incredibly beautiful and with the bridge straight out of Star Trek, this is beyond next level. Thank you very much for another super informative video.
I'm impressed by the wheelhouse and the quality of the overall build seems impressive. I know this was designed by the owner with his tastes in mind but as an overall package I couldn't do it. For an explorer vessel who may be in remote areas for long periods of time the crew area needs to be better. They should each have their own sleeping space with no sharing. The interior of this vessel gives off a Naval ship vibe in the crew and guest spaces. I'm not interested in super high end luxury but I would expect to have at least a mid range accommodations for me and guests. It's great that the owner wanted to repurpose an existing hull but for my money I would start with a new build.
After having spent 4 years at sea with the US Navy - noting that this trawler has only a 9 meter beam - I would like to see her in some open ocean footage. And I would like to hear from some of her crew that have tended to customers on board. I truly loved my time on the ocean.
Beautiful ship. However, how does one block off the skylights in the sleeping cabins? I would not be very comfortable in my cabin knowing anyone above on deck could look right down on me in some state of disrobement.
Great reporting and video recording. This is a real boat. You go into it and it is a boat, it spells adventure, marine life, expedition, exploration. It does not look like a luxury penthouse many other motor boats look like. This boat would feel comfortable in Monaco but also in North Atlantic or Cape Horn. Well dune, keep it up. Subscribed.
WOW... when I first saw the greasy mess this was & what the owners envisioned all those moons ago for this trawler, I saw the possibilities & couldnt wait to see the final product... i am blown away, the engineering alone is nothing short of a masterpiece... obviously we all would've gone a dif route on the cabins & dining area, but that galley is gorgeous & the decking is perfect, luv those cut outs that step down to water lvl, ingenious... but what truly is mind-blowing, is that bridge, epic in every sense, I have no doubt theyre star trek fans, only a fan could envision such a setup... cant wait to see what they add over time to increase its functions & desired wants... they say money cant but happiness, but it sure can buy you a boat... 😎
I enjoy the trawler conversions. Is anyone aware of a former Naval vessel (Corvette, Frigate, Destroyer - recognizing that the ship classification often depended upon size, tonnage, armament, and intended usage) converted into a yacht? I would enjoy seeing videos of such a finished conversion.
This Trawler is very impressive and the attention to detail is very impressive as well. But I would like to see the state of the decks and that open ended kitchen area at the Bow after a few heavy storms with huge waves crashing over the Bow area washing it in sea water. That’s why fishing Trawlers are built with no fancy wooden decking.
Here’s my video that I made during my last visit a few months ago: EXCLUSIVE Look At A 46-METRE STEEL TRAWLER Yacht Project! th-cam.com/video/Ly6tuzgB0Pk/w-d-xo.html
Epic boat , just done the outside tour . As for the galley . haute cuisine is fine , regular food is good too ! For charter , for most scary , fuel and crew ?
Wow dream vessel I love the boarding area at the midship talk about covenant for tender launches and swimming and scuba diving and she looks like she could take some ruff seas with her fishing background and high bow
i love it! that is my dream boat. and i think that line from the movie Jaws where he says: we're going to need a bigger boat! .. this is what they should have had!
Wow!!!! Forget about chartering her. I want her for myself period!!!! I would hire the best crew I could pack my things and off I'd go to see the world. Thanks for sharing
Amazing job and they have really thought out how to repropose what was a trawler. The problem that is inescapable is that it looks like a trawler, and you can never disguise that fact. This means when you consider the money spent, there will always be other large yacht owners who will look at this and sneer in distain . You can never get away from the fact it was a trawler, and that in itself presents a problem at this kind of price . As an ‘explorer’ vessel, it is limited to a certain commercial use, but it is very Impressive. Never underestimate the power of snobbery though…
Thanks for watching! Don't forget to check out my website: yacht-buoy.com/

Totally inspires confidence in its seafaring ability. Now with the right captain I don’t think I’d live on land again. Beautiful and capable. Wow
You took the words right out of my mouth ... Yes she sure is a beautifully done vessel & worthy of admiration.
I really appreciate that you include deck plans in your videos. I can pause the video, zoom, in and look at the amazing naval architecture involved. I wish more yacht channels did this. Thanks for another fantastic viideo.

Great to see old boats been repurposed rather then being scrapped

@@YachtBuoy Wow, canned responses, too... lazy?
I love how capable this ship remains. You could take this into almost any sea state and hold there safely.
Except near Yemen, those stairs on the side are like a pirates dream

Having seen Damen’s impeccable craftsmanship I would bet my TH-cam channel on the watertight integrity of those skylights in all conditions 🫡
That would be a great trip!
Wheelhouse is nothing better. Amazing engine room. This build left nothing to consider missing… wow
So much more impressive and rewarding than billionaire party yachts (floating obscenities). A vessel like this can be repurposed over and over and serve many roles and have a long service life.
Those low-level side access points remind me of a feature on some coast guard vessels, that makes it easier to fish people out of the water.

They probably have shades for them
In high latitudes it's 24 hrs of sunlight so good quality sleep would be a challenge without black out blinds for some of us.
Well I saw her today and what a mighty impressive looking ship she is
That is the cleanest engine room I have seen in a while, damn!
I don't know why, but i like this kind of boat design rather than sleek clean line luxurious boat.
This kind of boat look so much fun to sail with.
Absolutely!
Would be interesting to know the cost of acquisition + refit vs. what it would have cost to new-build a ship of similar capabilities and capacity.
Look at what Bering produce and then compare that with the US$21 million being asked for this.
You like your non " cocktail" yacht visits. Form and function yacht.

That is absolutely GORGEOUS!
💯%
They do this a lot now with all those crawlers available. They are 2 more being built in Amsterdam and 1 in Harlingen.
What a wheelhouse!
That master is incredable use of space and light. Great video by the way.
Thanks!
The bridge is so cool, almost like a modern warship 👍🏼👏
The wheelhouse also reminds me of Star Trek, what a place that is. My first thought was Star Trek.
What a great conversion. Well worth the wait I would imagine.

I would be curious to see what it looked like before it was rebuilt, the Dutch are great engineers and this fine vessel is a great example of that.
Here’s my video that I made during my last visit a few months ago: EXCLUSIVE Look At A 46-METRE STEEL TRAWLER Yacht Project!

Woo that bridge set up is awesome

😍
i am a fisherman and i bet this would make an great seaboat !!!
Wow!!!! Forget about chartering her. I want her for myself period!!!! I would hire the best crew I could pack my things and off I'd go to see the world. Thanks for sharing

That is one amazing looking boat, great job. I really love that wheelhouse.
Glad you like it!
Ah, yes the Magnificent !
I remember Her.
Walked around Stellendamm and saw this, while building
Amazing job and they have really thought out how to repropose what was a trawler.
The problem that is inescapable is that it looks like a trawler, and you can never disguise that fact.
This means when you consider the money spent, there will always be other large yacht owners who will look at this and sneer in distain .
You can never get away from the fact it was a trawler, and that in itself presents a problem at this kind of price .
As an ‘explorer’ vessel, it is limited to a certain commercial use, but it is very
Impressive.
Never underestimate the power of snobbery though…
A range of 9000nm. That's insane! With that much space, why isn't there a sail? I could envision one.
I've been on this vessel when she was original and I guess I prefer fishing beamtrawlers over trawler yachts apparently
The port and starboard amidships boarding areas are taking me a while to get used to.
