  • Markelle Fultz diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome. What exactly is thoracic outlet syndrome?
    I'm a resident doctor with a passion for sports medicine and these videos are intended to help non medical audiences get a better understanding of what goes on in the world of sports medicine. This video is a description of thoracic outlet syndrome in easy to understand terms. Nothing in this video is suggestive of what I think might have happened to Markelle, simply an explanation of the condition he was diagnosed with. Enjoy!
    Timeline:
    1:24 - what is thoracic outlet syndrome
    3:50 - diagnosis and symptoms of thoracic outlet syndrome
    4:40 - causes
    5:15 - Treatment approach

    He was complaining about numbness in his arm and that lead to rumors of nerve damage from a motorcycle accident.
    This sounds like a misdiagnosis and a medical staff that was passing the buck by saying it was in his head.
    I have thoracic outlet syndrome and my symptoms flare when I sneeze...it feels like a "stinger" down my arm. Its extremely painful, but only last for a minute or 2.
    I was also diagnosed with a muscle imbalance for years...now as silly and stupid as this sounds I just have to watch my posture if I feel like I have to sneeze.

    • @Byronic19134
      @Byronic19134 5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      The staff def wasn't passing the buck its a very uncommon condition and Fultz is technically physically able to do everything and pass a physical to be medically cleared. Some of it may be Fultz not telling the doctors exactly whats going on trying to tough it out and suck it up.

    Hey man, I wanted to find this video to comment and say thank you so much. My wife (gf at the time) is a former D1 athlete and was experiencing similar symptoms that puzzled doctors at the time. You posted this video pre-pandemic when her symptoms were really bad. I showed her this video back then and she was like “omg that’s what I have.” It took us a while to get referrals to see specialists for such a specific condition based off a TH-cam video, but we finally got an appt with a renowned doc in Boston to get treatment. Doc confirmed it was TOS and recommended a relatively simple surgery to release the pec muscle. It’s been a very long and gradual recovery, but she is way better now! Who knows how long she would’ve went without a proper diagnosis had you not posted this video! Can’t thank you enough.

    Thanks for shedding some light on this uncommon condition! I remember hearing about this with Markelle! I actually got an unprovoked DVT from venous TOS while running a half marathon- my whole arm swelled up. I had to be on blood thinners to prevent more blood clots until I has a first rib resection. I've heard conservative management is usually successful with neurogenic TOS, like with Markelle Fultz, but usually the rib has to come out with venous TOS.

    Great video, I recall this diagnosis when I worked for a physiatrist MD in PT Dept. My friend Royal Jacobs does amazing Releaseology in CA, exactly what Markelle could use.

    This video really helped me understand what exactly people were talking about in reference to Markelle’s injury. Hopefully he will come back from therapy and all that and play like the 1st round draft pick we were hoping to see in the NBA!
