This is Mattress87 from the RWP forums. Here's one theory: Taj may have been booted out of the playable roster either when or shortly after Diddy was added and the game was retitled from Pro-AM 64 to Diddy Kong Racing, to keep the roster at an even ten. At this point, Drumstick was likely moved from being a starting character to a secret one to fill Taj's vacancy. Looking at the order of various playable character models in the ROM, Diddy is often one of the last two characters along with T.T., which could mean one of the two replaced Taj. Unused assets show that Drumstick existed early on, so it's likely he wasn't originally transformed into a frog at the start of the game. The only thing that doesn't add up for this theory is the fact that this instrument channel exists in the Character Select music sequence alongside the ones used by Diddy and T.T. Internal labels for sound effects indicate the developers planned for 12 playable characters at some point, but sounds for the last two entries have been replaced with random sounds used by other things in the game. Before anyone asks who the 12th character would be, there's zero evidence in the N64 version (the labels are generic and numbered 1 through 12), but Wizpig exists as a second new secret character in addition to Taj in the DS version...
@samthebfg This was found by using an emulator to change the tracks that were playing. Each character's song has a track number like 0030, 0040, etc. Matress87 found that one track number was never used, and activated it. This is what he found.
@remektheyoshifan103 I use a program called HexWorkshop to do data edits, such as swapping Diddy's model, as seen here. The music was found by Mattress87, when he found the data that controlled what parts of a song to play.
@aggie1138 Mattress87 was messing around with codes to change music channels. While he was testing the code on the character select, he found this. That image is a modified version of the game to switch Diddy in the character select with Taj.
@vhayes8886 Kinda like the time I replaced music in Metroid Prime Hunters with Mario Kart music, and the opening scene before the video was playing Yoshi Circuit music. I should get back into hacking the DS version of DKR...
I love silly little Mysteries like this. I love Diddy Kong Racing, my fav racer ever, bar none! How was this music found? Would of loved to have seen Donkey Kong Racing on the Gamecube but Rare leaving for Microsoft changed all that.
Everyone thinks this would have been for Taj, but do you want my opinion? If by some miracle we get a new Diddy Kong Racing game with Banjo and Conker returning and for whatever reason Shantae makes a guest appearance (which would actually be funny now that I think about it), I can see this as her "character select" theme.
Not to question the video song source. But could it been possible for the songs to be saved in a MIDI format and the sounds used for the song could be applied for any song in the game?
It is possible to export midi from the game using tools made by Subdrag, if I remember correctly. That isn't what this is though, and sorting the instruments correctly from the hundreds in the game would have been nightmarish.

They probably had to cut Taj as a playable character since he's playable in the remake for the DS.
