Okay they are obviously adding a tremendous amount of reverb effect to the raw sound of this microphone. And of course this is something that most classical guitar recordings have, it's what I do, and it's sounds very nice. However this is not the sound that you are going to get straight out of the mic even with a fantastic guitarist like Brandon Acker. It's probably also not the sound of this room because it's obviously a big wide hall type reverb. I think would be better if you explained and demonstrated what the recorded sound is straight out of the mic and with and without the reverb effect and whatever else EQ and compression etc that's been done to the signal.

Great playing as usual Brandon!! Interesting to hear the different tones from the mic placement.

My Lord!!!! that´s so beautiful and the sound is great!... I´ve found quite difficult to capture the actual sound of a classical guitar... because it never sounds like it... I always get that cardboard tissue box with rubber band strings sound!

Great playing and interesting examples of the effect of mic placement. I see you also play the lute, would you position the mic in about the same position and at the same distance when recording this instrument as you did here? Thank you for any comments.

Hi! Our Market Development Specialist Yuri recommends the following “I tend to follow similar spot microphone techniques for recording lute, except that I strictly use positions that point towards the body of the instrument rather than where the body meets the neck (as I did with guitar). If you watch Brandon play lute, you can see that with the renaissance lute, his right hand is closer to the rosette, but with the baroque lute, he plays a little closer to the bridge - so generally, you want to find a spot where the mic is pointing at the instrument and getting good projected sound and not pointing directly at his hand. As far as distance, I would start with the same idea, maybe about a foot or more away, and then adjust to taste. The distance is really subjective and depends on a lot of things, including the player, strings, room, and repertoire, so it’s always best to hear it for yourself and then adjust.”

Thank you very much for this, it is very helpful. As I am playing both Renaissance and Baroque lutes with gut strings I want to hear the sound texture but not amplify any effects of finger contact. I will have to experiment with different positions bearing that point in mind. Thank you again!

Wonderful demonstration! I have a question though. Does this microphone only record in the app that comes with it, or can you use an iPhone DAW like BandLab to record with it?

Hi! We recommend you contact the App manufacturer to verify their app does support USB mics. Also, the MV88+ is generally not compatible with recording on Android devices, although it may work with the Shure MOTIV Audio and Video apps on certain devices and operating systems with additional cables or adapters. You can confirm device compatibility here: www.shure.com/en-US/motiv-compatibility

What long cable are you using from the mic to the phone? I find that the one included in the kit is really short. And another reviewer reported that using an extension, triggers a "not detected device" error in the app.

Hi! The Shure AMV-LTG is a 1 meter (3 foot) long Lighting to USB Micro cable, which may be used with the MV88+. Shure has not tested any third-party cables and can't guarantee they will work for your particular situation. Only cables sold by Shure are officially supported.

So can you set the setting of the mic on the app, and then will the mic remember the settings when you are not using the app?

    • @shurecreators

Correct! The most recent settings from the app are stored in the device.
