You have me encouraged to keep at it. I have two small books like that with very nice WC paper. I can see how I could go back to some old entries and do better. Thanks Betty. Happy 🎨
Just what I needed after a long day of driving through crazy traffic - a fresh Betty video! I jump on here almost daily hoping to find a new video from you! Thank you for your generosity in sharing your process and your inspiration. Another beautiful piece!
OMG Betty! As always I come away from watching your videos so satisfied and inspired. Your work small or large is consistently beautiful. Thank you for sharing your talent and process.
I was having a bit of an off day when I saw this video, and watching your sketchbook process really turned my mood around. I LOVE the color palette of this piece-though I love all greens. Thank you for sharing and brightening my day ❤️.

Absolutely love your art betty and your calm soothing voice. Have watched you several years now and your videos are not only educational but so very enjoyable because of your calm soothing narration and teaching ability. Thank you for all your beautiful art, god bless you betty !
Limited palette is on the cards today! I love the little sketch book idea. It often feels comfortable to have something less imposing facing me! I also am a fan of the paper concertinas! Thank you for all your inspiring videos! 🌼🎨
I only discovered your art and channel yesterday but I'm already so inspired. I hope you don't mind I'm dipping my toes into abstract art following your "flower garden" recipe. It's a bit like your process - having something to follow, to have that safety net/springboard to experimentation. I can't wait to discover my own style, preferences, and takeaways. And can't wait to make my way through your whole video archive!
This is just wonderful! I recently discovered you & your work & I am hooked. You've given me a fabulous gift & motivated me to move forward. Thank you!!
I've been parched. I needed one of your videos to quench me. Such a joy to watch you paint. The colors are great. Take care it seems we are not out of the woods yet with the Delta showing up.
Hi again. I also paint abstract flowers quite often, using all kinds of paper, but I seem to like using thin, shiny magazine pages the most (old calendars also one of my favorites). Once there is a good layer of paint down (I just pour paint on & spread with a knife, dry, add more, until it feels kinda like leather). It's amazing how much of a beating it will take - erasing, scrubbing on, scrubbing off, scratching, burnishing til the paint is shiny, etc. Probably not archival, but I'm probably not good enough for that to matter, lol! And plastic lasts forever anyway. In answer to your question, I have found that for me, using the least amount of colors possible is the best way to quickly end up with a painting to be proud of without a lot of brain draining color matching decisions. I don't want to think too hard, just want to get at it, lol! I have a question of my own. Do you always cover the whole page, or do you create more "open" paintings as well? Hope you know what I mean by that... I've been trying to do this myself, and so far no luck, I just go wild with the paint cuz it's so fun! Oops, verbal diarrhea, hope you don't mind......
You're funny, Yope! Sounds like you have a process that you really enjoy! I agree with you that plastic lasts forever (however, I varnish to ensure that the colors stay bright). I think I know what you mean by an open painting. Well, I'm thinking two different things: 1) not painting all the way to the edges (which I love to do) and leaving more open space; 2) have more areas of just color without mark making (which I don't do). I hope one of those two answers your question!
@@BettyFranksArt Haha, I have a penchant for doing the opposite of "normal", I guess eccentricity has its place in my life! Your art is inspiring, thank you.
Thanks, Libby! The small sketchbook is the perfect size! I don't change the plastic. I recently added this table so the plastic will remain for a few years.
Thank you Betty, I love your work and your explanations, it is all very inspiring. Tell me, what is the advantage of a "china marker", as opposed to crayons, or charcoal?
Thanks, Marguerite! You always ask good questions! There's no advantage. I like to use a variety of tools. Each one creates a slightly different type of mark. Thank you!
In my past a good majority of my work was with limited colors. I noticed people like them. So pink, black white. Purple n blue were my hot sellers. It matched their decor they said. Oh I had bought me a little house and I had painted over the wood paneling and it made me nuts it was so ugly. I got out of bed at midnight and painted a mural of a pink lake black trees with a deer and lots of shrubs to cover the wall It sold my house , but I had to throw in my pink Chamille bedspread.lololo
Betty do you ever sell your art from your journal. Im interested in a smaller piece of yours. Please tell me how to view what you currently have available. Thank you
Thank you so much for asking! I don't sell the ones from my art journal. Those are just for me. Right now, I don't have any small pieces available. My small art on paper is popular and is only available to the folks on my email list. Have you joined? If not, here's the link: www.bettyfranksart.com/email-sign-up I'll have more art on paper available after I return from my trip to Croatia in September/October. Mostly likely I'll have them all ready to go in early to mid-November.
New subscriber here. I am so new to art as well - and really do watercolor with maybe some mark making in other mediums. However, there are not really any channels doing abstract WATERCOLOR. So I have to get my abstract fix from acrylic demonstrations. Do you mind if I ask why you put all of those marks down and then seem to cover them all with acrylic paint? Maybe it's something that doesn't come across on screen. And again - I am new so I am just trying to learn. Thank you!
Hi Barbara! Welcome to my channel! I'm so happy you found me. It's true that there aren't a lot of artists doing abstracts using watercolor. I tried with watercolor, but I just couldn't build up the layers and keep the colors bright. I put down marks in the beginning because it's my way to loosen up and get into the groove of creating. It also helps me concur the white page staring back at me! Thanks so much for watching!
@@BettyFranksArt Ohhhhh.....I totally get it now (why you start with marks even if they get covered up later on)! What a great idea of how to just JUMP IN!! I love it. And maybe that might be why there are so few people doing abstract watercolor. LOL. I am such a beginner...I have worlds to learn. Thank you for taking the time to respond.
Hi Michelle! Paints absorb right into non-gessoed surfaces. I prefer my paint to glide over the paper so that's why I love to put down a layer of gesso first. However, this sketchbook can handle all the paint with out a layer of gesso. I tried that, too!
You have me encouraged to keep at it. I have two small books like that with very nice WC paper. I can see how I could go back to some old entries and do better. Thanks Betty. Happy 🎨
