    The northern lights were so beautiful and I still can’t believe it happened. They were pretty at around 1030pm but at 230am they damn near stopped my heart. I was in the middle of nowhere in Limestone…East Tennessee. You can’t see a damn thing out there in the dark. Looking up at those pillars were more beautiful than the eclipse in 2017 and I never thought I’d see something more beautiful in nature than the eclipse. I didn’t get home from taking pictures until after 4am. I’m so bummed it’s not a regular occurrence here.

    Nice one , the Buckeye still delivers some beautiful spots. Little idea for the trekking poles : try to diy the " Osprey system " . Make a metalwireloop between the big meshpocket on the back and the side pocket on the left side. Fix a big enough rubberband on the left shoulderstrap by looping it around the strap. Make a litle hook out of the first metalwire to fix on to the rubberband and voilà . Put the points of the trekkingpoles trough the loop , turn the rubberband around the poles (just under the grips ) and fix it on itself with the the hook.

      I’ve thought about that. I never used that when I used to use an Ather before they started throwing too much additional crap features on their packs for the retailers. Just haven’t seen a way to make the part to hold the tips in place on my Catalyst

      @@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes Just a piece of metalwire (green fencewire ! ) ,you can try to fix it by passing it trough the mesh or make some loops at the end and sew it to the pockets. You have to have a look at it before fixing if it wil work : maybe it needs to be fixed only on the side pocket , depends of the width of your pack.On one of my packs it is fixed between the pockets, on the other its on the side of the sidepocket only .Had to sew a little myself to hold the elastic band on the shoulderstrap in place .The hardest thing is plying the little hook around the rubberband (fine plyers needed ) .With some luck maybe you could find a handy trailangel on your trip . 😃

    If not chemophobic, use permethrin on your shoes/boots and pants and purchase insectshield high top socks (plus maybe shirts) and you won’t have to worry about ticks. I live on 27 acres that is loaded with chiggers and lone star ticks and black legged ticks and this is the only way I can enjoy being outside. A game changer for me.

    Tar Hollow also has a nice backpacking loop (17.6 miles) called the Logan trail. It has much steeper grades than the Buckeye trail which is great for training for trail races. I ran it in 2 hours and 55 minutes a few years ago.

    Looking ahead I notice the route goes right through Cincinnati, St. Louis, and KC. While seeing big cities on a cross-America hike is kind of a neat idea, it seems like it add considerable challenges in terms of logistics, safety, and aesthetics.

    • @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes

      I actually think it’s kind of unique walking through the cities unless you’re in a bad area. Logistically it hasn’t been too bad of an issue so far. I mean, big cities usually have hotels so you can always plan to just duck inside like I did in Parkersburg. There was apparently one of the cart guys who was robbed in that city though.

    Those rural areas reminded me that crop dusting season is coming. Times might be different now with GMO crops but I wouldn't be surprised if you see them flying over the fields. You don't want that spray landing on your camp so I would advise against camping next to commercial fields if possible. This would include a rural church surrounded by corn and soybeans.

    Also, what is your recommendation for rain gear on AT thru hike.?

    • @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes

      I have a topic video on rain gear. I just need to finish editing it and post it. But the short version if I was doing it again, I would bring the umbrella, some sort of rain jacket, possibly the frog tog or else my BD StormLine Stretch. I’m using now. The ULA rain skirt. And the showa termes rain gloves. Just keep in mind it will likly get rainy to the point where just walking around in your underwear is the best option. Also make sure you can keep your pack dry. Rain covers for packs are a waste of time. Bag the inside with a yard bag / trash bag. My Ultra Catalyst has also proven mostly waterproof

      I have never been a big fan of the action cameras for slower paced activities like this. The fish I warping just drives me nuts. That’s why I use the phone when we did the Mississippi.

    How do thru-hikers find trail angels? Is there an app or website you guys check?

    • @ripvanrevs

      For the Buckeye Trail you can either get on the face book site or contact a section supervisor and they will help you get in touch with people.

    • @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes

      The Hiking America maps have some of them listed. The ADT Society state coordinators have put me in contact with some. There are usually individual Facebook groups for sections of trail. And often people reach out because they watch me on TH-cam.

    I've noticed you record a lot of roadside chickens. I'm guessing those aren't really a thing in SoCal

    • @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes

      I try and get some shots of whatever animals I’m walking by. I know plenty of people with chickens in Southern California but they don’t let them out to roam like that. That’s just called feeding your pet coyote.

  • @johnwilbur7707

    So would you recommend to get water off trail as much as possible?

    • @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes

      In general in non wilderness areas I’m wary of getting water from bigger streams where there is likly to be a fair amount of pesticides and such. Also anything near a road since a lot of trash and oils tend to end up in it. I look for smaller flows coming off hills fed by springs or rainwater. On this trail I’ve generally just been asking folks if I can fill my bottles during the roadwalks. I’ve probably only filtered maybe a dozen times so far. It is helpful to have the filter along though

    • @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes

      Please note that my above answer is specific to the American discovery Trail, and trails like that. You mentioned the Appalachian Trail when you asked about rain gear and there you are filtering pretty much 100% of the time. Except for one small section where there’s an old uranium mine the water sources are completely safe with filtering

    • @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes

      @@johnwilbur7707 the American discovery Trail is a very different style of trail. For most people I would recommend sticking to the more traditional through hiking trails since then you don’t have all the worries on water or where to camp. And there are a lot of really cool ones out there.
