Hi Jon, Ah no dude, I really enjoyed watching your show, and re-watching episodes for this video made me realize you put in some very clever writing into it. Much better than the "Shouting = Funny" rubbish Machinima later put on. Just a shame we never really spoke back in the day, but if you ever fancy adding me to Skype or anything, would love to have a chat sometime! :) But yeah Machinima managed to cover up the screw up really well, but firing staff immediately afterwards was obviously going to doom the secret.

Another part of what made the Irate Gamer bigger on YT was that YT also starting to remove James Rolfe's videos, specifically the early AVGN episodes around 2007ish for some reason which IIRC is one of the biggest factors that led to AVGN being a timed exclusive on Gametrailers/ScrewAttack and thus moving away from YT during the time. As of now, all but one of the AVGN episodes are officially uploaded onto YT, and we all know why the Atari Porn episode will never be on YT.

Larry Bundy Jr. is an amazing anomaly. He some how manages to create content that reveals many hidden things that many could only find after sifting through hours or days of research, not on the internet alone, and many being second-hand recountings, such as from Driv3rGate. Not only that, but somehow he finds the time to comment and reply on videos found all around TH-cam, and with 200k Subscribers to boot, and has been doing this since the dawn of TH-cam. He isn't just a celebrity or a content creator, he's one of us, and I find that absolutely fantastic.
Thanks matey, I just try and stand out from everyone else, I think putting well researched videos at the cost of consistency is worth it in the long run.

I remember that claim and was baffled. Some even said AVGN was the knockoff of Irate Gamer cuz Chris Bores was on YT longer. They didn't even bother to check that AVGN was doing videos in 2004 and 2006 with Screwattack 🤦🏻♂️

I think this video has suddenly gotten more relevant in the past month or so, with Machinma deleting a lot of content they had on their channel. With a lot of things I used to watch religiously as a kid suddenly gone.

I actually met Chris Bores once before his TH-cam days. He was dating an ex-girlfriend at the time. At that point, he was just making public access movie review shows, music videos for friends, etc. He spent almost the entire time in his room working on his projects. He eventually came out hours later once she was showing me some of his videos, but then disappeared again. She eventually left him because he paid her almost no attention, choosing to just focus on his videos day in and day out. He was making DVDs of TV shows without official releases such as The Snorks and canceled one season long CW reality shows and selling them on eBay. As many probably know, he continued ripping off other popular videos by making a Ghost Hunters knockoff, where he then reviewed his own show on IMDB giving it glowing reviews. The dude just loves himself and the attention.

It baffles me how many content creators can't handle their success, in spite of their self-acclaimed professionalism. As if they locked themselves out of real life situations that would learn them a lesson or two about not being naive. Clearly this means there's a general lack of self-confidence, wisdom through life experience and some sort of education on how to deal with virtual fame. Listen kids, if you have a goose that lays you golden eggs, you don't sell the goose. You sell the eggs. And politeness brings you a lot further in life than being painfully sincere.
Irate Gamer once did one of my favorite obscure NES games. He couldn't figure out how to play it (it's not that hard) and then went on a huge rant about how short the game was... Because he thought the first level (of seven) was the entire game.

"Advertiser friendly." Could someone please describe what the heck this even means? There's advertisers that advertise on youtube that also advertise in 'R' rated movies. You know, ones that have plenty of blood, gore, violent and the occasional sex scene. Why is the internet suddenly have to be a bastion of 'G' rated content yet movies are A'OK? You can stream in porn as fast as your router can handle it but for some reason advertisers are upset about content on TH-cam. Just ticks me off the entire reaction to it has been jack-booted thug response instead of reasonable compromise.

While that's a good point, it seems like advertisers didn't have as much control of where their content could go in the early years, and even now, advertisers can't pick which exact video/channel they want to advertise on. So a Pro Wrestling Organization may want their videos next to "violent content", but can't choose that otherwise it won't just be wrestling, it'll be ISIS beheadings. Now, when applying that here, TH-camr probably felt more comfortable building their own star in the Irate Gamer, but clearly didn't do the research into WHY he was getting all those views. -Matt
"Advertiser unfriendly" is a really fancy way of saying "independent creator who isn't a good little puppet in our sydicate." The entire advertiser friendly/unfriendly thing boils down to three things: Ideology (Google and TH-cam are run by a bunch of extremely social authoritarian radical ideologues), connections and money. Notice how regardless of any other factors, your major mainstream news networks never have their ads pulled, even networks like Fox News, despite the fact that just reporting on the news breaks a ton of TH-cam's content guidelines. The entire system is meant to create a sort of aristocracy, basically an "upper class" of insiders who get special privileges, without looking like that's what they're actually doing. Either because they've got money, they've got connections or they promote the desired politics. Even TH-camrs like Pewdiepie are seen by TH-cam itself as competition for their giant corporate partners. It's complete and total bullshit, and it's why we desperately need a new TH-cam to wipe out this one.
2007 is exactly when I remember people having the debate of "Who is better, Nostalgia Critic, AVGN, or Irate Gamer" with everyone always coming to the conclusion AVGN and Nostalgia Critic were good but Irate Gamer sucked.
I remember those days. That's actually how I learned about the Nostalgia Critic and Irate Gamer. I watched one review of Irate Gamer's - Contra - and about three minutes in, all I could think was "wow, try hard much?" Then I started hearing about his pissy backlash-ish attitude towards people who called him out on stuff, and I just had no interest in going back to him. Also, there was this "feud" he was in with AVGN, but I only ever heard his side of it. As far as I know, AVGN had no clue what was going on. Nostalgia Critic was a different story, but I eventually dropped him too. AVGN is the only one I've stuck with since I first heard about him - going back to when his Top Gun review first came out. He hasn't disappointed yet. Hell, I remember when he used to be called the Angry Nintendo Nerd.
I wouldn't blame Pewdiepie for that, it's on Machinima to know what they provide and whether or not that might conflict with potential sponsors. Entirely their fault for putting all their eggs in one basket without making sure that both partners understood one another.

James Rolfe is still around because he's not a one-trick-pony. AVGN helped to put him on the map, but he was already doing movie reviews and other stuff in his website.
TH-cam's biggest problem is their continuous attempts to control who succeeds and who doesn't to the point of trying to replace producers they don't like with similar ones they do.
I remember old TH-cam... It's a shame how a lot of the old channels I used to watch disappeared into the aether without a trace, videos and all. I hate nostalgia unfulfilled.
Suppose if you ever did a Part 2 to this, Classic Game Room has to be on it. Stupid decisions (and greed) turned him from one of the better quality game reviewers of his time to.... reviewing comics, pens, and... erasers and uploading primarily to... TikTok, a completely wrong video platform for such content.
Technically, CGR was doing comic reviews long before they stopped doing video game reviews. Even having a channel dedicated to it. Though, I admit the older comic reviews were better than the recent ones. They weren't as short either.

I actually used to watch your old tv show back in the day! I can't remember the name of the channel it was on, but I remember it being really low budget and crappy, however that sort-of gave it an amateurish 'early TH-cam' vibe to it (before TH-cam was even a thing) so it was kinda cool to see on tv. It felt almost 'punk', like a do-it-yourself kind of tv. It was also the first and only dedicated gaming channel on cable at that time, so I watched it quite a lot. Most of the shows on there were pretty crap, but yours always stood out head and shoulders above the rest as easily the best show on there. I didn't discover this channel till *years* later, and as soon as I heard your voice I was like, "Oh my god, that's Guru Larry!" and it was! Subscribed immediately and I've been watching this channel for years now lol.

Sure were! CGR was my very first 'gaming-related' subscription when I had just started getting into TH-cam; I never missed an episode & super respected them because they really knew their stuff and presented it well. Dammit ...now I'm getting all misty-eyed.
I can actually understand why Gamelife got so much popularity. Their videos have somewhat of a right-at-home feel. Like, home movies. Their rise and fall story sounds like something you'd see in a movie.

Ironically, I actually watched the Irate Gamer before I watched AVGN. It was just by chance that I happened to come upon one of the IG's videos and only later on did I find out about AVGN's much superior content (though I can't remember if that was also chance or if it was because of IG - it's been awhile).
I'm sure you're aware Larry, but for those who aren't, Chris has been uploading new Irate Gamer content recently, and surprise-surprise, he did a Q&A podcast with his fans. At the very least, it's nice for Chris to finally come out and interact with his fan base, and I recall on a blog somewhere, Larry, that you offered tips on how Chris could improve his work. One of them was about engaging with his fans. I'm not sure if Chris might have actually taken some of your advice after this long, but I'll let you make of it for yourself.

It's ironic that TH-cam is worried about what's "advertiser friendly" when we had that "Food You Want to Fork" ad campaign playing in a lot of TH-cam videos. I'm not just trying to be funny, those are real ads. TH-cam should just have an age rating system if they are worried about the children that much.

I actually met Chris Bores once before his TH-cam days. He was dating an ex-girlfriend at the time. At that point, he was just making public access movie review shows, music videos for friends, etc. He spent almost the entire time in his room working on his projects. He eventually came out hours later once she was showing me some of his videos, but then disappeared again. She eventually left him because he paid her almost no attention, choosing to just focus on his videos day in and day out. He was making DVDs of TV shows without official releases such as The Snorks and canceled one season long CW reality shows and selling them on eBay. As many probably know, he continued ripping off other popular videos by making a Ghost Hunters knockoff, where he then reviewed his own show on IMDB giving it glowing reviews. The dude just loves himself and the attention.

It baffles me how many content creators can't handle their success, in spite of their self-acclaimed professionalism. As if they locked themselves out of real life situations that would learn them a lesson or two about not being naive.

Could someone please describe what the heck this even means? There's advertisers that advertise on youtube that also advertise in 'R' rated movies. You know, ones that have plenty of blood, gore, violent and the occasional sex scene. Why is the internet suddenly have to be a bastion of 'G' rated content yet movies are A'OK?
You can stream in porn as fast as your router can handle it but for some reason advertisers are upset about content on TH-cam. Just ticks me off the entire reaction to it has been jack-booted thug response instead of reasonable compromise.

While that's a good point, it seems like advertisers didn't have as much control of where their content could go in the early years, and even now, advertisers can't pick which exact video/channel they want to advertise on. So a Pro Wrestling Organization may want their videos next to "violent content", but can't choose that otherwise it won't just be wrestling, it'll be ISIS beheadings.
Now, when applying that here, TH-camr probably felt more comfortable building their own star in the Irate Gamer, but clearly didn't do the research into WHY he was getting all those views. -Matt
"Advertiser unfriendly" is a really fancy way of saying "independent creator who isn't a good little puppet in our sydicate."
The entire advertiser friendly/unfriendly thing boils down to three things: Ideology (Google and TH-cam are run by a bunch of extremely social authoritarian radical ideologues), connections and money. Notice how regardless of any other factors, your major mainstream news networks never have their ads pulled, even networks like Fox News, despite the fact that just reporting on the news breaks a ton of TH-cam's content guidelines.
The entire system is meant to create a sort of aristocracy, basically an "upper class" of insiders who get special privileges, without looking like that's what they're actually doing. Either because they've got money, they've got connections or they promote the desired politics. Even TH-camrs like Pewdiepie are seen by TH-cam itself as competition for their giant corporate partners.
It's complete and total bullshit, and it's why we desperately need a new TH-cam to wipe out this one.
These channels rose and fell, but Guru Larry is forever.

I remember those days. That's actually how I learned about the Nostalgia Critic and Irate Gamer. I watched one review of Irate Gamer's - Contra - and about three minutes in, all I could think was "wow, try hard much?" Then I started hearing about his pissy backlash-ish attitude towards people who called him out on stuff, and I just had no interest in going back to him. Also, there was this "feud" he was in with AVGN, but I only ever heard his side of it. As far as I know, AVGN had no clue what was going on. Nostalgia Critic was a different story, but I eventually dropped him too.
AVGN is the only one I've stuck with since I first heard about him - going back to when his Top Gun review first came out. He hasn't disappointed yet. Hell, I remember when he used to be called the Angry Nintendo Nerd.
I wouldn't blame Pewdiepie for that, it's on Machinima to know what they provide and whether or not that might conflict with potential sponsors. Entirely their fault for putting all their eggs in one basket without making sure that both partners understood one another.
ValensBellator I would also put it on Levi's for both not establishing any sort of morality clauses and not doing their research.

It's a shame how a lot of the old channels I used to watch disappeared into the aether without a trace, videos and all. I hate nostalgia unfulfilled.
Suppose if you ever did a Part 2 to this, Classic Game Room has to be on it. Stupid decisions (and greed) turned him from one of the better quality game reviewers of his time to.... reviewing comics, pens, and... erasers and uploading primarily to... TikTok, a completely wrong video platform for such content.
Looking back, CGR was never all that good, but it's important for being one of the first game review web series. I thought the guy stopped...

Technically, CGR was doing comic reviews long before they stopped doing video game reviews. Even having a channel dedicated to it. Though, I admit the older comic reviews were better than the recent ones. They weren't as short either.

I'm surprised you didn't mention Manchinema's other controversy, their secret partnership with Microsoft and paying partners to endorse the XB1. They got into trouble with the FTC over that stunt.

I actually used to watch your old tv show back in the day! I can't remember the name of the channel it was on, but I remember it being really low budget and crappy, however that sort-of gave it an amateurish 'early TH-cam' vibe to it (before TH-cam was even a thing) so it was kinda cool to see on tv. It felt almost 'punk', like a do-it-yourself kind of tv. It was also the first and only dedicated gaming channel on cable at that time, so I watched it quite a lot. Most of the shows on there were pretty crap, but yours always stood out head and shoulders above the rest as easily the best show on there.
I didn't discover this channel till *years* later, and as soon as I heard your voice I was like, "Oh my god, that's Guru Larry!" and it was! Subscribed immediately and I've been watching this channel for years now lol.
Classic Game Room was legendary back in his day.

Sure were! CGR was my very first 'gaming-related' subscription when I had just started getting into TH-cam; I never missed an episode & super respected them because they really knew their stuff and presented it well. Dammit ...now I'm getting all misty-eyed.

Ironically, I actually watched the Irate Gamer before I watched AVGN. It was just by chance that I happened to come upon one of the IG's videos and only later on did I find out about AVGN's much superior content (though I can't remember if that was also chance or if it was because of IG - it's been awhile).
I'm sure you're aware Larry, but for those who aren't, Chris has been uploading new Irate Gamer content recently, and surprise-surprise, he did a Q&A podcast with his fans. At the very least, it's nice for Chris to finally come out and interact with his fan base, and I recall on a blog somewhere, Larry, that you offered tips on how Chris could improve his work. One of them was about engaging with his fans.
I'm not sure if Chris might have actually taken some of your advice after this long, but I'll let you make of it for yourself.
