    I wouldn’t be surprised if Atari “losing” the Mario Bros source code was short for saying “we sold the desk the source code was in when we liquidated all our assets after the crash, and the source code was in it. When the guy who bought the desk offered to give the code back to us, we ignored him.” By the way, while this may not have happened with Mario Bros, it is a completely true story for several Atari titles and is the reason the source for so many classic Atari arcade and 2600 games are lost forever. The executives making these decisions had no understanding of the value of what they were giving away, they thought the desks were of more value.

      I felt bad for Nintendo having to be draconian to third-party developers especially in the case of localization after Atari's anarchy in the American video game business. I'm happy Nintendo of America is still around today. I just have to say, for the record, if someone wants to play Afterburner (II) today, the hands-down best version is the Sega 3D Classics port for 3DS. Not only is it arcade-perfect as an adaptation, and adds in some nice bonus extras and options, but the 3D effect is absolutely STUNNING. Not just Afterburner II, but all the "super scaler" ports to 3DS. They're the best versions of those games that exist.

    • @Crunkman2k
      @Crunkman2k 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    How about another "Games cancelled for stupid reasons?"
    I know people have suggested Fez 2 (though tbh, the fans kinda deserved it after bashing him for being gay)
    Scalebound is another I've heard.
    I heard about the sequel to the Afro Samurai game being a trilogy, but only made it one episode with terrible reception and sales.
    Chrono Break, the third game in the Chrono series.
    and of course let's not forget Prey 2

    • @Crunkman2k
      @Crunkman2k 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Square never actually started work on Chrono Break - they just put in a trademark for the name, far as I remember, and then C&D Chrono Resurrection because they had "plans for the series going forward"... which amounted to a DS port of Trigger.
      Granted it's a damn good port, especially with the extra features, or if you lack a Wii/Wii U to get the game on VC and don't want to sell a kidney for a SNES cart, but still. Kinda sounds similar to what happened with Another Metroid 2 Remake - Nintendo trademarked "Metroid: Dread" years before, then C&D AM2R because of Samus Returns.

    What about GTA: San Andreas for the PS2?
    When the game first was released, it included an unfinished sex game in the game code. It was normally unaccessable, but modders on the PC version discovered the sex minigame and released a mod that made it playable. This sparked national outrage here in the US. The PC version immediately got the sales killing Adults Only rating. Later, it was discovered that the sex minigame code was also hidden away in the PS2 version, which was also slammed with a Adult Only Rating. All major retailers refused to put an adult only version of the game themselves. The PC version got the illicit code removed via a patch, but the PS2 discs were recalled from stores. Rockstar quickly put out another version that had the minigame completely removed from the code entirely, which was given a sales friendly M rating.
    So, in your words, "RERLEASED BECAUSE THE ORIGINAL VERSION INCLUDED UNFINISHED VIRTUAL SEX."

      To be pedantic, GTA San Andreas on PS2 wasn't actually a port, it was the original version of the game. The PC and Xbox versions were released later on, this was back when Rockstar had a timed exclusivity deal with Sony, so those GTA games were originally built around the PS2 and then ported to other platforms. As it's not a port, it technically wouldn't fit on this list, it would be more of a recall to patch the original game in an era before online connectivity was universal on consoles.

    • @NickCapricorn

    What really surprised me here is that somebody went ahead and made a tape drive for the Atari 2600. I mean, it was the early days of home video game development, but that was a peculiar decision even considering that context.
