It was also wise to keep the show a minimal-budget affair, instead of trying to make it a huge thing with a studio space and an entire cast of actors and special effects artists.

Absolutely agree. And yet people still find things to complain and hate about. This episode feels like one from 8 years ago which is already instantly rewatchable. I do appreciate even the small inclusion of different camera angles like this; nothing too crazy, but really gives it a bit of life. We are so lucky he keeps giving us this content!
The SNES version of The Rocketeer is actually a port of a DOS game. There is also a game that is loosely based on The Rocketeer. It is called Rocket Ranger.
I saw THE ROCKETEER movie in theaters when I was a small child. I even had a Rocketeer action figure. I never got to play the game. From the looks of it, I dodged a bullet 😆

I understand that your love of filmmaking has influenced a lot of your recent AVGN episodes, but sometimes, this traditional template feels like home. Episodes like this one are the ones I watch on repeat late at night. This feels like old school AVGN.
13:41 - even better, I think someone should make a mod for doom where it just swaps doom the guy's screen and the gameplay screen with each other. We'd have a giant animated doom guy's face and small gameplay.
I remember renting the SNES version. We figured out the thing with the little screen pretty quick, and we had a turbo controller so all the shooting and flying sections were way easier. But we couldn't get past this next bit where a guy above you was dropping bombs and you had to dodge past them. The character just moved so slow that it seemed impossible.
Anyone else notice how often James cites Contra when describing how a game should be made?? If he did a series about how great Contra was that would be so rad.

This felt like a classic episode. There was a nice calm backstory to the game at the beginning. Just hearing James explain stuff is satisfying. Then it slowly ramps up with more anger throughout. It doesn’t even bother me if most of the shots are just of the gameplay and the couch. For me, that’s where the heart of AVGN is.
I still can’t believe what a icon the AVGN is on TH-cam. The channel’s been around long enough to where the series has become timeless and synonyms with TH-cam. I wouldn’t be surprised if many video game review channels took inspiration from his reviews.
I've been an AVGN fan since day one. Recently I've felt that episodes we're getting more into being movie productions than the episodic review/ranting that we know and love. This episode brought back the satisfaction I felt in the early days. Thank you James and I look forward to your next endeavor.
I actually played this game when it was new, of course I had THE POWER, which helped me finish the game. Wasn't that bad actually, but I almost didn't remember the SNES version. Overall, this episode had me rolling! Cheers James!

Honestly, that plane race minigame had so little to do with anything, that I thought the start of the SNES segment was some sort of skit about putting in the wrong game.
I just finished rewatching all of the old classics, and I gotta say, you still got it James! This was a fun episode that felt classic in all the right ways. Keep on doing what you do best! You brought me so much joy in my life!
This gets me thinking about how game developer conferences often have fascinating "post-mortem" presentations by some developer of a popular/successful game to reflect on the process. It'd be entertaining if we instead marched the devs of games like these onto a stage to explain themselves.

Honestly, that plane race minigame had so little to do with anything, that I thought the start of the SNES segment was some sort of skit about putting in the wrong game.

This gets me thinking about how game developer conferences often have fascinating "post-mortem" presentations by some developer of a popular/successful game to reflect on the process. It'd be entertaining if we instead marched the devs of games like these onto a stage to explain themselves.
