    Unlike Model S, the RWD Model 3 is more efficient than dual motor.

    • @MorganTrvolt
      @MorganTrvolt 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Makes sense, as there where never a rwd ms with the rear motor of the d alone. It used the older and less efficient first iteration.

    • @m.c8038
      @m.c8038 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      So it's better to get the regular RWD model 3 long range, rather than the dual motor long range?
      And also, do these have a JAKE BRAKE like a Prius? Where it will regenerate the battery if you put it in that mode if you're going down a hill (also slowing you down without pushing on the brake)?

    • @lemongavine
      @lemongavine 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mac Viking RWD Model 3 is better for range. As a matter of fact, Tesla just recently revised the range rating to 325 miles on the RWD. The AWD is still 320 miles even though the battery is the same as the RWD. And yes, the Model 3 has Regenerative braking to charge the battery when slowing down or traveling downhill.

    Hi,
    After few months with a M3 LR AWD, i have noticed the following concerning efficiency:
    - The efficiency is always better in highway and straight driving --> I only get 150wh/km (241wh/mile) and lower in straight driving conditions like highways (at 110km/h, 70m/h)
    - The acceleration is what is really causing peak consumption, so when you are in traffic, it will consume more, since you accelerate and break a lot of times.

    • @milanpaczai9043
      @milanpaczai9043 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      In my opininion this is because the overheating occurs in some other components apart from the battery while regening

    • @hihorlf
      @hihorlf 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @magiva I think it got regen limited because the batteries got to cold. My guess is that letting the car run down the hill in neutral caused the batteries to cool. In the Model 3 the batteries are heated by the heat given off by the motors. There is no separate heating element like in the S and X to heat the batteries. It’s all done by the fluid for the batteries running around the motors. There is no overheating going on there.

    • @mskz06
      @mskz06 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Either due to battery SOC being high or batteries being too cold or combination of those factors. Regen is too low to overheat M3 motor.

    • @timr.6864
      @timr.6864 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      In Model S you can regen with ~70 kW at 95% SoC. On a Supercharger you would only get about 30kW charging speed.
      This high regenerative braking at high SoC is possible but not for to long I guess.

    I believe the tires, not the wheels, have the biggest impact on efficiency, hence the difference vs the Performance model. It appears for maximum efficiency, you want to run the hardest and skinniest tire you can (think BMW i3 type). The Model 3 appears to have been designed for way larger rubber just looking at the spacious rear fender tub area. It's speculation that during testing Tesla found a softer, more aggressive 275 width tire just caused range to plummet, hence the specially designed 50psi 235 width tire they finally settled on.
    I think Tesla arrived at a nice compromise. Those green tires still allow for decent handling and braking while maintaining good efficiency. For those wishing to change to wider aftermarket tires and wheels, be prepared for quite a range drop.

    • @pepstein
      @pepstein 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. Especially the 20" wheels, because they come with summer performance tires, whereas the 18" and 19" come with grand touring all season tires. Troy shows 13% more range for performance dual motor with 18" aero wheels than the same car with 20" wheels. And he shows exactly the same range for performance and non-performance dual motor cars equipped with 18" aero wheels: teslike.com/range

    • @aussie2uGA
      @aussie2uGA 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Peter Epstein Thats a great chart you linked! I use the 80-20 charge rule and have staggered sized tires on my dual motor LR. I see about 200mi of range at 80mph. That’s just about right according to his chart.

    I live in UAE which has hot weather and I pre ordered tesla model 3 long range with 19“ wheels
    I drive 300 km total to work and back 5 days a week. I can drive in that highway 120km/h to 160km/h
    Can the Tesla handle it with one charge if I want to drive the car to work ?
    What is the recommended speed to go and back home safely?
    Can I travel 300 km with 90% change and back home with at least 15% ?

    The trucks are going slow because that is their speed limit on that slope, it isn’t because the engine is struggling.

  • @Ewoodster
    @Ewoodster 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Interesting result, you managed to reach the WLTP figures. But it baffles me how slowly you have to go to get there. Absolutely not a feasible speed for highway driving here in Germany. Every truck would tailgate you. I estimate that the range would be around 300 to 350 km at around 140 km/h. Still impressive for an electric car.

    Why would you go Neutral in downhill ? Even if the regen is limited, you can still get some juice back on these massive hills ...

      Doesn’t neutral defeat regen? Why put it in neutral going downhill? I bet even more range if left “in gear” so regen can replenish some energy.

      @m.c8038 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@semotech That's what I was wondering. I remember driving a 2007 Prius and it had the 'B' (Jake Brake) option on the shifter, so as you're going down the hill, you can put it in that B mode (instead of D mode) and it would regenerate the battery (while slowing you down slightly as you're going down the hill).

      @tHoM0r 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@semotech if you don't need to slow down, coasting is a more efficient transfer of potential energy into kinetic energy compared to Regen charging the battery with it's 60 percent efficiency

      I swapped out my aero wheels and green tires for aftermarket and can confirm it does make a big difference in efficiency. I believe it's the tire that contributes the most to high efficiency.

    • @pepstein

      Yeah, it's mostly the tires, and some from the aero caps. Troy shows the performance version has no range penalty if equipped with 18" wheels: teslike.com/range

      @@m.c8038 when they introduced the Performance Model 3 you could get it with 18" aero wheels. It had the smaller brakes that the lower trims use. But now you can only get the Performance Model 3 with 20" wheels and the larger brakes.
      These larger brakes prevent you from fitting Tesla's 18" wheels. Other companies offer smaller wheels that clear the big brake calipers, but they don't have the aerodynamics of the stock 18" wheels.

      @@pepstein Got another question. I live in a region where there is no snow, it's always above 32 degrees F (it's warm all year long) and I'm also looking at using this to do Ride-sharing (Uber) as a part time thing. Would this be good in stop and go traffic in the city or will I not get the amount of mileage as he did in this video driving on the highway? Someone stated that this dual motor AWD LR Tesla 3 wasn't even the most efficient (even though it got over 330+ miles going through mountains, wind, snow, etc.. in the video above), so is the RWD LR even more efficient than this? Already at the mileage he was able to get on this dual motor Tesla 3, it would be enough for me. I drive Part time for Uber on weekends, in a 2007 Prius and unless I do 12 to 14 hour shifts, I rarely ever break 350 miles total for the night. So when I saw this video last night I knew it was capable of my needs, just wondering if the single motor RWD LR will get me more mileage than even this dual motor one!

    I wish I could get that kind of range in my m3 (dual motor, non-p with 19’s). I can’t get my consumption below 300 wh/mi (10k miles, almost all highway, 70mph) but i do drive faster than you were going.

      Karen Pease - that would be a fair statement had someone at Tesla informed me of the range penalty when I ordered or picked up the vehicle... I only ordered the 19” wheels because I didn’t want hub caps - if I had known about the range penalty or that there were pretty decent rims under the aero covers I probably would have chosen the 18s
