    South Wales to Liverpool and back, 329 miles, 62kWh at 187Wh/mi last week in my 23 model 3 long range rear wheel drive. Genuine 400 mile range. Driving to speed limits and with the traffic.
    No need for supercharging on 95% of my journeys.

      ⁠@@decimal1815I think I’d have to try it before deciding. I think the process of indicating when leaving roundabouts might be a challenge with the buttons not being where you’d expect.

      They could of made a ‘stalk’ that didn’t move with capacitive buttons.... cos it’s the moving parts that cost money.... I assume they developed it for the us with no roundabouts... I’d need to try it to know but it seems utterly stupid... I’m slightly surprised it’s legal here

      @@decimal1815 Depends on the driver. Are they open to change? It’s all about muscle memory. With the new steering wheel it has the ridge to split the top (left indicator) and bottom (right indicator). When turning, one just needs to find that ridge. We all know when the steering wheel is upside down so we should know which direction the indicators are when flipped. If driving with two hands, it should be a lot of easier for people. Practice makes perfect.

    Thanks, very interesting comparison. My EV, not a Tesla, the heat pump was about an extra £1000, when I did the calculations it would be at least a 10 year payback for the electricity saved, obviously if you are high mileage and need every mile of range then it is probably a reasonable return. If it is standard then you get it anyway.
    I accept that there are other benefits, maybe faster heat up times, and maybe better battery conditioning, if you really worry about the range then get the smaller and more aerodynamic wheels.

    V3 chargers and power sharing: Out of Spec had a video yesterday that talked about the cabinet capacity and cross cabinet power sharing. You only get full 250 kw if the overall site is not fully occupied. At busy sites power can’t be shared enough and each cabinet has to limit the power to each plug.

    Interesting comparison Richard. A few on here are commenting about different road conditions, tyre pressures, rain, sun etc effecting your test figures. Well, that’s real world for you and that’s what it’s all about. What the test does show is that Tesla’s are the most efficient EV’s available. German manufacturers don’t get close, and their cars, for me anyway, are inefficient and expensive.

    V3 supercharges do still share power but they way it works is rather brilliant! V3 have a 350kW cabinet that supports 4 V3 dispensers. So hearing that you might think that means if 4 cars on using all 4 dispensers they are limited to 87.5kW. But then those 350kW chargers can share with each other as well. So a V3 site that had 2 charger cabinets and 8 dispensers can share the 700kW to any dispenser that needs it. So only a very full V3 site with many cars at a low state of charge will see lower charging speeds.

    It is important to note that their efficiency is helped tremendously by the slower speeds in the UK. On one leg of the trip they averaged 50 mph. In places in the US the flow of traffic is typically closer to 70+ mph or even much faster than that. Efficiency really deteriorates tremendously above 70 mph. Therefore, the efficiencies they are seeing are much better than you would see at much higher speeds.

    We've just done a 700+ mile trip to, around, and back from North Wales, averaging 3.6miles per Kwh in my MYLR.

    Thanks for this comparison. Very useful when considering a second-hand. Could you do a video describing your experience in the 97,000 mile car? I saw you replaced the seat sensor recently for a very reasonable cost but apart from tyres and wiper blades, what else might one expect over practically 100,000m or 162,000km? As my daughter is considering a second-hand Model 3, it would be great if you found time to share. Cheers.

      Really really maintenance free and reliable though it’s unreal. Car is still awesome, rattle free and also just smashed other cars at a track day recently

      I did 125000km in the past 3.5 years driving around whole Europe (M3 AWD 2020 with boost, no heatpump). From Switzerland to Portugal (10x), from Gibraltar to Northsweden (Kiruna) etc.. I had one service around 65000 for 800 CHF (consider swiss salaries) for a precaution check. Changed wipers, some breakfluid and windshield washerfluid, AC filter, wheels and breaks cleaning and reset. Another at 100'000km for 1100 CHF more or less the same stuff done and checked, including frunk motor swap (frunk did not open anymore), otherwise it would have been more or less the same price.
      I have an excel sheet comparing my old fiat punto and a comparable AMG and BMW M3 (same power, but cost more) and I can tell you that I already saved 15000-26000 CHF. In comparison with the Fiat I save every 13km 1 CHF, compared with the AMG / BMW M I save every 7km 1 CHF.
      and yes, I payed 55'000 CHF for the car but I still can resell it for over 30k at least.

      @@RuffyUzumakii7 Many thanks, that's most helpful. That's some driving indeed! As we live on a smaller island in the west of Europe, we don't tend to do such long trips. A ferry trip to northern France takes nearly 24 hours. When you traveled to the Iberian peninsula, how was access to charging facilities? Tesla maps don't show as many chargers south of the Alps or the Pyrenees.

      @@connclissmann6514 unfortunately my answer two days ago over the bellbutton was not posted :( I saw your comment and try to answer again.
      Spain is indeed lacking charging stations, that's why i fully relly on superchargers (SUC). Other charging stations usually do not work, some of them are even standing around new and still wrapped in plastic. It's a shame but I always got around with SUC and normal house plugs. Every app I used there did normally not work 90% of the time. german Mobility+, portuguese MIIO, swiss swisscharge.
      Portugal on the other hand always had a gread charging network. You get easily around with MIIO, everything just works fine and you will normaly always find something in any village. Unfortunately a stupid law three years ago blocked the new creation of new SUC locations (they have to be integrated in the mobi.e network). That is why you will find 2 ready to use SUC in Portugal (supercharge.info) since 2020 but they can not be used. And as long as this is not solved, new SUC stations won't be created. Don't be afraid to use MIIO.

    Rain 🌧️ and more specifically standing water affects efficiency tremendously. You have to push the standing water out of the way with your tires. The drag it produces on the car is way more than drag from the air. The faster you go the much more that standing water will affect your efficiency too. I did a trip recently where we had flooding on the interstate for the first 160 miles of the trip. I averaged 280 wh/mi in my 2022 Model 3 Performance. Then on the way back I had no wind and no rain on the road. I averaged 207 wh/mi for 220+ miles. I have the new 235/45/18 Hankook iON EVO AS tires and they are incredibly efficient. The Highland Model 3 won’t have these tires in the 18” size wheels. There is a new e.Primacy that is similar. That is what the Highland will have.

    Really interesting video. Without trolling through previous tests, I would guess that the warmer/drier the weather [within reason - battery kindness temps] the closer the non-heat pump M3 would get to the heat pump M3 ? Everything else being the same, of course.
    Is Gints really the better driver ? 😇

    Another great video. Interesting to see the impact of a heat pump and the large wheels. It would be very interesting to see the difference between heat pump and non-heat pump cars in the winter when it is really cold. Will the difference be more?

      @@slavko321 Yes, it was cheap too , it was made for fleets only, got it in August for 39.5k € brand new in France (after the 5k€ discount from the French gov). Only colour choice was black or white. Don't need the AWD capability.

    Would be nice to connect scan my Tesla a actually check consumsion and used energy as Tesla show rounded number. And argument with ryzen is nonsense it will be difference in few W it is as charging two extra phones. What may be reason is that early Tesla LR got rear motor same with performance version. Would be nice to check (it should have sticker / code)

      They don’t stain easily at all. Just wipe with damp cloth to clean, same as the black

My car is a twin motor with a 78kWh battery, and I'm lucky to get 220 miles in the summer and 160--180 in the winter (WLTP 301). My daily commute is 50% local roads 30/40 mph and 50% national speed limit.

    In the first 2 cars you are comparing charge percentages and how quick they get to a percentage, however doesnt 1 of the cars have a bigger battery and will therefore take longer to get to a percentage of maximum charge?

    The heat pump only makes a difference when heating is needed.
    Wet/rain requires alot more heating (heat transfer number much higher in the rain).
    Consequently the test you have done exaggerates the differences (though UK is very rainy).
    At those low speeds I easily get 260 miles in my 2019 LR awd.

      At normal speeds (50% fwy 70mph / 50% city) I get >300 miles from a 60kWh LFP RWD, in ideal conditions 350 miles.

    It’s a bit jarring comparing time/distance in % when the batteries have different capacity, but the message, laboured though it is, is still good.
    I wonder what your tyre pressures were. Just did a return trip London/Aberdeen in a 21 M3LR and noticeable differences between 2.8 and 3.0 bar.

      1000/kwh
      So if kWh is 212, then 1000 / 212 = 4.717kw / mile
      Or in this case, 1000 / 278 = 3.597kw / mile

    The older car charges "faster" because it has a smaller battery. It's like you have two cups, one small and one large. If you were pouring water into both cups at the same rate, the smaller cup would fill up sooner/faster. Same principle applies to both batteries of different capacities.

      But you don't charge a Tesla with cups of water. 🙂 As mentioned in the video, the older car was taking on power at a faster absolute *rate* (higher power) than the newer car, so your analogy isn't perfect in this case.

      the battery is slightly smaller, it has nothing to do with that. he charged from over a 25% lower SOC of charge. The reality is that charging time below 40% SOC just doesnt matter much (regardless of size). So arriving with 40% or 5% is very similar.

      That's nothing to do with the battery size.
      2019 take higher charging speed and also higher speed for longer time.
      Charging time.
      2019 model take 20 min from 10-80%, 2022 model takes 27 min.
      That's a huge difference.

      @@kingprone7846 He was charging from 13% SOC in the older car. Remember, charging isn't linear, the lower the SOC the faster it charges up to 80% and then it levels off, taking a lot longer to charge from 80% to 100%. I believe the other newer car was charging from 40%. Rewatch the video.

    Highland seriously looks like a big step back to me even though you can expect a slightly better range and probably slightly more comfort. No steering wheel stalks so you need to indicate with buttons and change the drive gear with the screen - awful, Tesla vision instead of reliable parking sensors which you have demonstrated is just not a good switch. I think one of these Model 3 second hands would be a better drive for a long time to come. Hopefully the stalks get put back. I just can't see that working out in the long run at all. Too much of a change for the average / non Tesla fanatic driver. Beyond stupid. Also the screen in the backseat is not useful for most drivers. Better if they had used that sized screen behind the steering wheel for a speedometer!

      The interesting thing is that reviews from people who have actually driven the Highland (rather than just pontificate online), suggest that stalkless driving is easy and you quickly become used to it.
      Many of us find that not having USS is not the end of the world, we can in fact drive safely without them.
      The rear screen isn't really supposed to be useful for drivers - it is there for rear passengers. Cannot see why it would be better placed in front of the driver - we already have an excellent whopping great screen in front of us!

      @@edwardhackett-jones8126 Both are safety hazards to say the least. Buttons on one side of the steering wheel which can be in any direction on a roundabout and you are supposed to keep your hands in the same location during a turn. Roads or hardly straight in the UK. The other is obvious; lack of instrument cluster.

      @@AndrewKeyz if it were indeed a safety risk, do you really think the regulators in every country that Tesla are selling these in, would be happy to sign them off? And after all, Tesla rates safety as one of their highest priorities, and continues to demonstrate that in their crash testing results and their remarkable onboard systems.
      Amazing to think that the Mini (both pre and post BMW purchase) has had centrally mounted gauges since the 1960’s, and one doesn’t here grumbling about safety there…. Plenty of cars have and have had such an arrangement, and never a problem. Who knew?!

      @@edwardhackett-jones8126I think he means the rear screen is not useful for rear passengers. I have to agree. Who can look at it without straining their neck ?
      Also, about the turn signals. In EU we have a lot of small and tight traffic circles. All reviews shows that the turn signal buttons doesnt work well here. We have a bunch of “Highlands” in my area and I have yet to see one use the turn signal in those traffic circles.

      @@tafl-9198 I’m in the UK. We have our fair share of mini roundabouts. I had no difficulty signalling accurately when I took a new 3 for an extended test drive.
      I’m a former driving instructor - I’m boringly fastidious about signals.

    If you do buy a used Tesla or other EV always, always get a battery report. Tesla cars have this feature in the service section. Many used ex lease cars might have been super charged which might have degraded the battery. especially if they have high mileage I would never buy an EV again and would lease one so you don't have to worry about the battery. In 5 to 10 years there will be a lot of EV's out there with battery issues or pending battery issues. I only charge on AC and NEVER rapid or Super charge. Also keeping my car as I got it NEW and value has dropped like a BMW, Audi or Mercedes ice car.

    The Teslas don’t seen to cope up here i the Nordics. I don’t have one myself but TH-camrs here are so negative about comfort, noise levels and other stuff. Maybe roads are just smoother over there?

      Not in the UK. Tarmac is often rough and a bit bumpy. In Ireland too.

      My negatives against model 3 are the ride, the noise levels, seats and headlights. But whilst none of those are the best, they’re still within realms of what’s acceptable and everything else is just so good. Their efficiency and charging plus the software are phenomenal.

      @@RSEV I have to try one I guess :) I liked the ID.3 because it was really quiet and good hardware-wise (this was the updated one with the better interior) but not sure about the software; on my short drive I didn’t touch it :). Thanks to you all at RSEV for the brilliant YT channel!

      E6 motorway on west coast in Sweden is worse than UK motorways in my experience yes. I’ve driven it plenty in my former Long Range Model 3 2019. The pre face lift was measured at 66 dB at 50 mph, and down to 63 dB on the Highland in Norway. That is a massive difference in perceived noise levels. Tesla staff I have spoken to who have driven it, say it’s on par with an Audi e-tron. Not sure about that, taking delivery soon so will see!

      Long-ish drives are rare for me in any case, three-four times /year visiting my parents along the Finnish west coast 350 km one way. The odd summer road trip, friends in Helsingfors stuff like that. Not enough Superchargers is the issue in Finland, but it's the same with the charging network oveall so not Tesla specific. You definitely still have to compromise according to "a better route planner".

      @@dabulls1g Sure, but the overall reception in the press and by the large public of the face lifted TM3 was very positive. Especially in relation to the redesign of the exterior (even a sense of relief in some opinions).

      A huge amount of people don't buy cars based on their looks. Having an app and charging experience that works reliably and excellently is far more of a priority for example.
