I drove a 1978 diesel from new to 153,000 miles. I am watching you as I plan on doing exactly what you are doing if I can ever find a 1978 two door now. I am disappointed you gave up on the welding. I understand why you did, but still I was rooting for you. Do you think you could have (with enough extra money) bought a suitable welder and taught yourself how to weld it. At worst, bought the same parts your welder is telling you and installed them yourself?

Nice job until now. I didn’t saw in the video if you put the screws in plastic zip bags for each component to be easy at the end.

Good luck with your project. If it's any consolation my project is even worse.. But haven't given up yet :)

I almost gave up on the project because reality hit me hard that I don't have the time, tools and skills to weld in the new metal parts... But at least this way i know that the metalwork will be done with proper tools and knowhow !

The thing with cheap welders is that they're just too high powered and it's too easy to just blow through the metal. You need one with the least amperage you can get, around 30A if possible. I know because I bought a cheap one too and have regretted it! Good luck though, I think all that welding for 700 is good value if it's decent.
