  • Band-Maid is a Japanese rock band formed in 2013. They gained international attention for their unique concept of combining the maid costume imagery with hard rock music. The band consists of members Miku Kobato (vocals, guitar), Saiki Atsumi (vocals), Kanami Tōno (guitar), Misa (bass), and Akane Hirose (drums). Each member adopts a maid persona as part of their stage presence, which has become a trademark of the band.

While it's a departure from their normal hard rock sound, the Maid's can take any song, even one in collaboration with another artist (Mike Einziger of Incubus) and put their own unique Band-Maid take on it. The die-hard Band-Maid "hard rock" fans need to give them credit for doing things outside their comfort zone and exploring other tempos and sounds. The members of the group are so talented that they can do those things confidently and with excellence. That's Band-Maid in a nutshell.

As a Maidiac, I love mostly everything the Maids do. "Bestie" is their colab with Mike Einziger of Icubus. When Kanami described writing it she said - "When I arranged, er, more like composed it..." she alluded to the riffs that Mikey-san handed off to her. Akane said she dialed it back to gentler percussion: toms instead of double bass. Everyone including Misa and Kobato are a little subdued and Kanami, while performing her usual subtext riffs behind the vocals goes with simpler than usual riffs on the solo work. I find "Bestie" fits well within Band-Maids 'Off Label' songs like "About Us", "Memorable", "Page", and "Smile". Yes, these songs are more 'Pop' than metal, but that isn't a bad thing.
I am always amused at the reactions of the Metal-Headbanger "purists" who soil their pants whenever Band-Maid dial it back, do a gentle ballad, or (GASP!) go acoustic. They don't seem to appreciate the fact that Band-Maid is all about stretching boundaries, and not just in the direction of hard rock. Sure. They can rock as hard as any band out there, but Band-Maid isn't a one-trick-pony: their talents stacks cover a very wide territory. Pay attention to their backing tracks: Kanami's orchestrations are magnificent and very cinematic and all the band member contribute to the backing tracks.

Nice review. It’s a shame people don’t like a certain song because they change up the style. I’ve heard other reactors say they don’t like a certain song because it’s not hard hitting rock. I can’t imagine myself being locked into a certain style of music. The amount of music I’d be missing out on.
This was a collaboration with Mike from Incubus. Band Maid style shines through. “Besties” could be played on stations in the states.

Bestie, in the vein of other great mid-tempo Band-Maid songs like Daydreaming, About Us, Memorable, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, Wonderland, Awkward, Start Over, Mirage, At the Drop of a Hat and Smile, was co-written by Michael Einziger of Incubus. MISA's playing and bass tone are setting new standards... and Akane's drumming is so in-the-pocket and distinguishable... and Kanami's solo is Daydreaming masterful! The recording and mix are as enjoyable as the song and beautiful MV! And Miku’s English lyrics are heartfelt. Is Band-Maid a band of fashion-forward, trend-setting Besties? 💞 Thx, Mikey, Band-Maid and Glenn & Adrian!
FYI - The Maids just released a "Making of Bestie" on their websites where they explain the song and look of their awesome MV.

New album coming in the summer, probably late summer. They've been working on it a while. Looks like this song will make the album (according to Miku) but most likely as a change of pace. From the hints the Maids have dropped, there will be a lot of "intense" songs. This band never really takes off. They've been playing a few (sold-out-packed) shows , too.
TW collaboration: Hard to know what they're planning but the two bands have been spending time together for the last few days. I'm going to guess if they're planning anything, it's probably something on stage. Kanami said two days ago that she's working on something secret that she can't talk about yet. Of course, that could mean almost anything.

To answer some of your questions: Yes, the band is expected to drop a new album this summer. This song was written by Miku most likely about the love she has for her bandmates. Saiki made the costume decision for this music video. And, I think maybe some fans may not dig this track because it pales in comparison to their recent bangers like Shambles, Hate, Don't You Tell Me and Unleash. But I think it's just fine and I don't think people recognize the band's challenge on this song isn't from the music but rather singing in a language that isn't your first language.

While there is certainly too much gate-keeping and closed-mindedness about music, I suspect that a lot of what seems that way is simply because we don't all actually hear every aspect of music. People who seem overly focused on speed, technique, and intensity may just not even be aware of other things that are going on in a track that others pick up on and enjoy, and the reverse can be just as true. Someone who's colorblind, for example, is going to enjoy or dislike a painting based on factors besides color - which means they're probably not going to like a painting where the use of color is the main point. There are also deaf people who really like music - but an especially clever, unique chord selection is pointless to them.
But while some people may just be neurologically unable to hear certain aspects, many of us don't hear them just because we initially learned from music that emphasized other aspects. The nice thing is that we can still develop the ability to hear at least some of what we're missing out on; it just takes familiarity and being an active listener. And guidance can help: I see lots of comments from non-musicians thanking more analytical reactors for helping them discover that music they like has elements they weren't even aware of before.

Done as a collaboration with Mike from Incubus. It's a nice song and well done but too ordinary for me, it doesn't sound like the Band Maid I know. Too restrained. I do like the short Kanami solo a lot.

  • @MusicMike747

You called me out in your intro. Official Maidiac who is unimpressed with this track.
I stipulate that the Maids are so doggone talented and have developed their own sounds to where they can make almost anything sound decent. (Like Van Halen. “Dancing in the Streets” anyone?)
My opinion is that’s what we have here. The lyrics here are simplistic and corny. I much prefer Saiki singing in Japanese with a couple English words for effect.
Kanami’s guitar tone is great. She finally cuts through. But there’s no riff. There’s nothing she does to latch on to.
I’m glad they didn’t wear their Maid Armor. Keep this as a quirky side project for shites and giggles.
Band Maid can do slow jams or alternative styles! “About Us” is fecking brilliant! “Wonderland.” “Sayonakidori” acoustic. “Endless Story.” But “Bestie” doesn’t hold up next to these.

I think this is an excellent rendition of a softer, more American style rock, designed to attract a new group of fans. Realistically, you can only get so many fans doing just rock and roll nowadays. Consider the Boston Pops Orchestra. Did their part in trying to get young people interested in classical music back when rock was king.
