We need to keep in mind that this whole thing came together because of Miko Kobatos vision. She went out there looking for these musicians . She had a very clear vision of what she wanted, she noticed that the music needed a different kind of vocal than what she could offer and it was then that she decides to open audition for a Lead vocalist and found that in Saiki . She’s the true visionary of the band. There is no Band Maid if she wouldn’t have put it together. To me that’s BOSS, she gave up the front seat for the better of the band. Humble and a leader. They all contribute immensely but these girls owe her a lot.

@Evren G.Nez great point and true. What did happen though was Kobato sprung the Maid Cafés employees uniform on Saiki at the very last second when Saiki couldn't back out. Saiki has said many times l am the only normal person in the band and if l had known that the Maid Cafés outfit and a pigeon were involved, referring to Kobato, with this band l never would have joined. That's not to say that Saiki is very happy to be a member and has been for some time. Only that while she loves Miku Kobato can get on her nerves once in awhile. Best regards.
If I go out of my way to seek a singer to see if she fits in the band . I’m headhunting her for an audition,even if she was part of the same agency. Saiki didn’t have it in the bag. She was close but ultimately needed to fit . If not she would have replaced Saiki with whoever was next on the audition list. I’ve been following since the first album. Know the history and transitions very well .
All true, but also one of those, right time, right place, lightning in a bottle situations. She was super lucky to find Kanami first, which led to the others, and suddenly your band is a legend in the making.

Yeah, you'll say that again. This is a band that is definitely on an upward trajectory.
The best part about the drum solo in this video, outside of it being freaking awesome, is the gigantic, face splitting, 'I'm about to lose it!" ear to ear smile on Akane's face. With some bands, you can tell that they're there to "do the job". Some will even have a little fun here and there during the performance. With BAND MAID, you can tell that they are enjoying the living hell out of being on stage, just as much, if not more, than the people in the audience.

The first time I saw them live I was in the front row and Kanami did a solo like right in front of me. I was blessed haha

Holy shit, dude! Finally someone else acknowledges how far In Flames fell! In my opinion, they had a real adventurous, experimental streak in them in the beginning. Harmonizing their guitars with cellos and violins?! They were stupendous up to Colony, then went down faster than Metallica post-...And Justice for All. See? People who know good music recognize Band Maid for their musical depth and prowess.💪🏻🤘🏻
Edit: Miku and Kanami keep their eyes on each other as they have a history of pranking each other during Freedom, like sneaking up and flipping each other’s skirts!🤣
Miku doesn't really have the vocal presence that Saiki has, but she harmonizes with Saiki almost flawlessly. Good examples of this are the chorus of One and Only, and the closing part of Secret My Lips.
Miku has two very brief solo vocal parts in Daydreaming that really elevate the song and are genuinely beautiful, so there's that also.
Also I strongly recommend that you check Rinne out if you want to hear this band at their most riff-heavy. I'm a fence-sitter when it comes to Band-Maid's newest album, but that song is a fucking monster.
Saiki has the vocal power, but she sometimes has to put a lot of effort into the high notes. Miku's voice has less power, but her range is a lot broader (both high and low) and she sings all her notes effortlessly. Perfect for harmonizing.
One and Only and Secret My Lips are great examples of Miku singing harmony, especially the live version of One and Only.
They love what they do so much. Their joy and happiness is contagious and brings a smile to your face. Akane's drumming is marvelous.
The drum solo and the transition to the following guitar solo are an extra to this live version. The energy, liveliness, the fun they have, absolutely exceptional. Rock On!

Apart from the obvious, Akane's solo and MISA's amazing bass line, the best thing about this performance is the amount of fun they're having. The best hard rock band!

Have to hand it to Miku. She was the one who thought her voice wasn't strong enough to sing the types of songs she wanted the band to play that's why they recruited Saiki. This version is great. Love Akane's drum solo. There used to be this song from their Zepp show on YT. In that one Miku got to shine 2x on lead vocals. Once at same spot as this one and then towards the end Saiki goes a bit into audience to sing and gets kidnapped by that audience so Miku took over on lead vocals and brought it home.
FYI Miku prior to starting Band-Maid was in a Japanese pop-idol group called Lil Cumin.

I love how effortless they make it look - and they are fooling around onstage while doing it, playing hengao games with Akane - and talking about Akane - the sheer JOY she seems to have while playing - that whole solo section she was just having a BLAST while drumming at a level most other musicians can only dream of.... she treats it almost casually, she's just THAT GOOD... Amazing...
On the commentary on the DBD Seiki asks Akane why she smiles so much.

@@powbobs And one of the main reasons why they are so good. They are just out there having a blast, and when the band is having fun, the audience has fun. So nice to see a band just having a good time. I feel like its been forever since I saw that.
They are wearing the same outfits from the last video you watched....because it's the same concert..... ;o) Their maid costumes have changed over the years, however. This is the latest iteration of the maid costumes, and are "bigger" and "frillier" than previous ones.

Akane and Misa, the way they play reminds me a lot of The Who rhythm section Entwisle and Moon where the two of them seems like they’re playing their own jam but it all fits and on time!

John Entwistle is the person I first thought of when I first heard Band-Maid and Misa, 'cause you may think he's/she's standing there playing anchor notes but they're really riffing all over the place. Similarly John McVie and Chris Squire.
@@wepprop I've been listening to music for over 50 years including rock, jazz, punk, alternative...and Misa is one of the greatest bassists like, yeah as you say, John Entwistle and Chris Squire, who always drives the band and the music on and on!
Saiki has the power, but Miku really has the range.
Miku sings either high or low harmony, depending on what they decide the song requires.
From what I've noticed, Miku usually takes the high split.

Miku has about 4 different backing voices, including one I call The Froggy. She uses all 4 of them during the Shibuya Line Cube Choose Me performance. The Froggy, The Miku, The Cutey, and an extraordinary high voice.💪🏻🤘🏻
Another great review. Band Maid are such incredible musicians but the also now how to put on a show and have so much fun doing it. Part of that showmanship is setting Akane up for the drum solo by having Saiki singing in front of the drum riser to bring the crowds attention squarely upon Akane... then she delivers in an epic way. Next year on February 11, 2021 when they play at the famous Budokan Arena in Tokyo in front of 15,000+ fans I hope they make another concert DVD like they did for this show.

Freedom is like one of their early song and probably one of their favourite to play at live its no wonder they have kinda 'perfected' but the best part is they always add something new to their performance
also adding part about their custom, they usually come up with new design every year or so around the same time when single/album is announced iirc

When Miku was putting this band together it was always in her plan to find a strong vocalist . She was in a previous 3 pc who did some single and clip and knew it had to have a harder edged vocalist. Yep agree with you on all your comments on riffs, change ups, transitions. And of course drum solo and Kaname, the genius composer, with all her great arrangement. This band is a 1 in a million chemistry combo.
Miku has a couple of song she sings lead on, mainly *TIME* and the other is *ROCK IN ME* check those out if you're interested to hear what they sound like when Saiki's on her breaktime.
My favorite song where miku sang is yarugu and freezer.

Great reaction and thanks for jumping on this new release. As I understand it, this song is the most played song in their live shows and one that they have a lot of fun with. The joy that they display in this video is just infectious, you can tell that they love what they're doing.

That part when Miku sing is a mockin' section for Kanami, lol. You know, couple years ago when they performed "FREEDOM" on stage, when it's Miku's part, She mess up the lyric and Kanami noticed. So she just immediately turned on Miku's and told her while lughing so hard. For the lyricist itself forgot about the lyric, it's hillarious 😂.
So, Kanami always messing up with Miku on this song, and this part whatever they did it on stage.
Now, she's just sitting on lyric monitor so Miku could hardly saw it while judging Miku's singing and playing that guitar. Damn this girls, lol 😂.
Especially since this is their very favorite song to play at live shows. If I'm not mistaken, they've played it at every one they've done so far. So that sorta frequency should REALLY have cemented it into Miku's memory. But hey, people get nervous sometimes and flub whatever they're doing lol. It really can happen when someone least expects it, and can fuck up something you've otherwise successfully done well over a hundred times.
Still though, I liked how they played it off and have since then made it into kind of an inside-joke amongst themselves and fans who know why Kanami and Miku are staring at each other like that during her singing bit.

The question is whether or not you have to restart "Dice," because many are not ready for it when it starts. They actually say "I wasn't ready for that."
This concert was the unveiling of the new outfits for each of them.
They have so much energy! And they just have fun on stage and that makes it twice as good, which I didn't think possible!
I just love your reactions! You should meet them in person. I spoke to them in English in Dallas. They had no idea what I was saying. They would just smile. It was great!
As for their outfits, early on they all wore outfits like Miku & Kanami currently wear. But Misa and Saiki never were comfortable in them. So, when they started personalizing their outfits, both dumped most of the maid look. Misa also usually ditches her shoes, and thus is ‘the Barefoot Assassin Maid’. Akane switched to shorts, probably to make drumming easier, and ditched her little hat latter because it was too much of a hassle.
She said it hurt her head and Miku took it away.
And with you the extraordinary songwriter Kanami Tono, Absolute Queen of Riffs. Each song can easily teach you four or five different riffs (with their corresponding rhythm guitar variant), little gems that last just long enough to make it more valuable. Other composers would kill to use only one of these wonders per song and this girl gives them away with her hands full.
An epic drum solo, followed by Kanami flexing a bit, followed by flawless, nearly _a cappella_ vocals for some seconds 😮
These five women are so good, it's ridiculous.
And the best thing is the obvious fun they are having when making music together ... Akane's *huge* grin during her solo is memorable.
You gotta love their sound engineers, too ... every instrument is clearly defined and perfectly balanced, which allows us to admire Misa's fantastic bassline throughout the performance.
Can't wait to see them live, hopefully next year.

About Miku and her voice - dunno if someone mentioned it before, but when they are greeting the fans, speaking between songs and doing the ending ment, she usually uses a very "cute-pitched" maid voice and tacks on "-po" to a lot of the sentences. In Japanese, this is the sound a pigeon makes (like a soundword), she likes pigeons a lot, and her stage name literally translates to "little pigeon". ^^ It's really so cute! I saw them live once, and they are truly amazing! If you want to see them in traditional Geisha robes, check out her "alter-ego" Band Maiko's video of Secret Maiko Lips (could make it a double feature with the original Secret My Lips)
It is a little deeper than that. Miku actually rents a little space in her head to an 810 year old pigeon who is Kobato. The indomitable young woman is Miku. Kobato inspires as a muse and looks out for Miku and company like a guardian angel. Miku also firmly believes in magic. During "magic time" she is casting a spell to simply ensure a flawless performance that would please all the masters and princesses in the audience. Regards.

The music and the original arrangement wasn't written by any of the band-members.
This is one of their earlier songs where most of the songs that the band (mainly Kanami) has written were rejected (by the management, producer, etc).
Same type deal with Arcadia Girl. Another great tune.
It's kind of sad when management steps in and take decisions about their creative output. I think these girls could manage without them by now.

I don’t think I can say freedom is a better song than domination. Up until now my fave live performance was their feb 14 domination. But after seeing this...this might be the better live performance. They always have fun on stage but this was a whole other level. Besides her crazy drum solo, akane’s kissy face to saiki when she was singing to her killed me
One thing that is very visual in this video, but you can see in other vids, is when Miku’s solo came, Kanami took a knee to put more attention to her. I’ve seen all (save Akane, of course) do that, letting the audience pay attention to the current soloist.
They are just enjoying what they are doing and having fun.

I love his reaction to Akane's drum solo and then Kanami's guitar bit right after it! That was pretty much my reaction to it, too. That solo literally turned her into my favorite drummer in any band.
I also find it funny how, in literally EVERY reaction video people make about this performance, they ALWAYS go back and watch the drum solo again. LOL they just HAVE to play it twice. It DEMANDS to be heard again.
Also, Miku's brief singing bit is kind of adorable, isn't it? She sounds just a TINY bit nervous doing it, and while that normally would work to undermine it - ESPECIALLY if it were a guy doing it, in which case it might even undermine the whole rest of the song, in Miku's case it just makes it endearing (I mean, she's kawaii as a button, so it's not at all hard to be endeared to her haha).

I've noticed with both comments and reaction channels that kanami often gets overlooked. I don't see this as a bad thing. She's like the spirit of the band, being the one that composes the music and all

They change outfits every so often. This tour showed this new outfit which shows a more " mature" look
Well, Kanami IS the Riff Queen.
They are the same outfits because it's the same show as Domination :) That said, these are newer outfits than ... a few months back (That show may have been the debut of the new outfits. Not sure). It's about the 3rd set that I'm aware of. Kanami and Saiki's skirts both got longer - which is probably a good thing since they spend so much time near the edge of the stage lol. Kanami also got a little "fluffier" especially on the back. Miku though REALLY went full fluffy! Really embracing the pigeon hehe. Early-mid Band-Maid featured Akane's Tiny Hat. Sadly, she had to set it aside because it had to be attached so firmly to her head to keep from flying off, that it hurt. So while sad (and it is missed by all), it's understandable. That's all I am aware of and it's just from watching a LOT of videos of them. They are a fantastic band, and imo the best straight-up rock band out - anywhere.

Yeah man, great reaction. The only thing missing from this awesome performance & the Okyuji Tour 2017 version was... Saiki didn't do her Buzz Lightyear impression of (FALLING WITH STYLE) into the crowd & exiting minus her heels. Kudos.

Band-maid understand the importance of space and silence in a song that most band do not.
The only other Metal/rock bands that use it as well are Iron Maiden (Almost positive that's a big influence, hell they use the same typeface...) and Nightwish.
The verse that Miku sings in this song is not meant to be melodic, it is meant to sound more like talking than singing. The reason she's more "cute" in this instance is because Kanami was making her laugh and she was trying to keep it together. For a better feel of Miku's singing capabilities listen to her solo parts in Thrill. She has an excellent singing voice with good range, she just doesn't have Saiki's contralto voice, or her vocal training and power. Saiki's breath control is insane.
Exactly right. Miku is there to compliment Saiki's voice and they fit together flawlessly.

What you mentioned about Transition riffs is kinda a Kanami trademark.Surprised you picked up on that. She has a tendency to do it more often in more recent songs. What's crazy is that those riffs could theoretically build entire different songs, but, she apparently thinks it is more important to use it wherever she believes it has the greatest effect. Two songs off of my head that have this is Blooming and The Dragon Cries off the latest album Conqueror. I mean the riffs she uses are short, but spectacular and seem to really set off the parts before and after. Another is sort of at the beginning of Puzzle, a great song off their album Just Bring It! So it is something that she knows what she is doing. Another reactor commented that they are very brave to use so much good stuff in one song, even when the song would still be good without the little things they do to make it great. I totally agree with that.

Hey man tries to listen to Band Maid - Reincarnation I think it's one of the most insane musical compositions of Maid, and Kanami gets over it.

this is from the tour finale. the costumes are the winter versions of their maid costumes. I personally think Kanami was messing with Miku(sitting in front of the lyric monitor when it was Miku's turn @probably why they were laughing). Akane's solo was added as was the bridge to Kanami's regular solo in this song. fan-service for the live version :)
Did you notice that MISA is singing on mic too? BTW, Akane, Senri Kawaguchi, and Rina Suzuki are the three best drummers in Japan. Also, Miku is their lyricist.

MISA!!!! MISA!!!! MISA!!!!!! Awesome video. It's a long A for Ahhh kan eh, not a short A. This was Akane's time to shine on the drums. The best drum solo I have seen in a long time. She a Gorilla on the drums. If she' not a top 5 drummer then that list needs to be updated. Like usual all 5 ladies are have a great time performing and with each other on stage. The are living the dream and appreciate every moment as if it's their last. Their concerts are like this from start to finish.
she has her own song, ROCK IN ME... she usually sings it when Saiki is taking a rest half way through the gig.
I found the comment about riffs v power chords interesting, as it seems that's the way metal has gone in general, becoming more intense at the expense of melody, almost like there's a need to get as far away from pop as possible. I've heard people say that Akane isn't as good as some metal drummers, because she doesn't play as fast, hammering out several hundred beats per minute. I think if Ace of Spades came out now, many people would say it's not metal. But that's just my take. Actual big fans of metal might disagree.
My favorite Band-Maid song is the song I'm listening to at that time, there is no bad Band-Maid songs.
If/when you ever get around to watching Puzzle, I think you should do a double reaction video of it and the live acoustic version of it. I think you'll definitely be blown away by Saiki's vocal ability with that one.
Remember, Akane almost had to quit playing due to a back injury...apparently, she has recovered. BTW, does anybody know if Akane wears a back brace? I would hate to see her go down the same injury path as Yui in Babymetal.
Miku's the "boss"; she controls uniforms, and everything else--dont's mess with the 800+ years old pigeon! MISA and Saiki drew a line in the sand, but for the most part yield to Miku's designs. She nixed the little hat the drummer used to wear...I liked the way that hat moved...Saiki's roots are Goth...
The little hat was supposed to be Misa’s. She didn’t take it well and threw it at Akane and here we are.

Miku actually has 2 solo songs that they perform along with the instrumentals to give Saiki a break in shows. They're called TIME and Rock in Me, and I really prefer the latter, but they're both lighter rock songs. Also, this song is one of their older ones before they wrote all of their own music, though I will say that both of the solos and a lot of the riffing in the background was altered for the live show from the studio version.

Have you ever seen a drummer having so much fun?
The bass and lead riffs are very quiet in this video. They are much much more forward in the Summer Sonic video. It was an entire concert set and one of the best all around recordings I had found. No shame in watching other reactions of the other video from Summer Sonic. I'd almost do that with most of their songs if you could and maybe just give us your thoughts in another Band-Maid video.
This song is an early one and written for them by songwriters hired by the label. Domination was written by the band.
slight correction Miku did write the lyrics for Freedom.

Both that video, "Domination", and this one are from the same show at Line Cube Shibuya, Feb. 14, 2020. That said, yes they do usually wear the same outfits for a whole tour. Miku (rhythm guitar/vocals) designs their outfits and regularly gives the band costume "upgrades", often coinciding with a new big tour. Miku and Saiki's (main vocals) outfits especially have become more elaborate over the years and MISA's (bass) has become more befitting of "The Barefoot Assassin" (MISA's nickname). Akane (drums) started with a dress like the others but switched to 'battle-shorts' about 2 1/2 years ago. Kanami's (main guitar) outfit seems to stick to a simpler "humble" theme over the years.
I think the drummer may be my bias she's just too damn cute when she goes off
