  • Hailing from Japan and formed in 2013, Band-Maid has carved a unique niche in the music scene. Their sound blends the traditional aesthetics of Japan with a modern hard rock and heavy metal punch. The band, consisting of Miku Kobato on vocals and rhythm guitar, Kanami Tōno on lead guitar, Saiki on vocals, Akane on drums, and Misa on bass, has captured international attention with their electrifying performances and infectious energy.
"Real Existence," comes from their 2015 mini-album, "New Beginning."

If you want to know more of our Maids, there is no better place than Ohrenje's documentary series.

Saiki is the youngest, she's 30, Akane is the oldest in human years at 32. Miku is 810 (and doesn't age - always 810), because well, it's Miku, and she's a small pigeon. Po!

Some clues as to how early this mv is in Band-Maid years, 1-Tiny Hat on Akane 2-Kobato still with her Rickenbacker guitar 3-Kanami with her Addictone guitar 4-MISA with her 4 string Fender Jazz Bass.

If you like BAND-MAID's songs and become a fan of theirs, you'll want to know their story. They were an unknown band when they formed, and they struggled and had a miraculous event that led them to what they are today. I recommend Ohrenje documentary. It's worth a watch, and you'll love BAND-MAID even more.

The song that really MADE this band. It was their first real "Holy F*ck" song, and it showed us where they were really going with their music.

A thing about the maid outfits, guys: as Fans and Maidiacs know, Miku -- the 2nd guitarist, lyricist, founder and who worked at a maid cafe -- wanted to show that everyday working "Kawaii" girls dressed as maids in high heels while having fun and smiling could rock as hard as any guy band sweating it up in their hip, poor tortured artists "outfits"... and by showing that contrast (the Gap), it would generate interest, which it so successfully has done! It also represents Woman Power (Equality), which is an important theme with the Maids.
Now they show up as Maids for all band business and interviews, etc. and have created a long-lasting, unmistakable, visual band brand. Very cleaver, Miku. Your diabolical plan for world domination is working, Po! Of course, none of this would work if their music and stage performance wasn't at such a remarkably high level. Band-Maid is considered by many of their fans and Maidiacs to be the best hard rock band in the world - maid outfits and all!

Keep that Band Maid train a’ rollin’ !!
The first three tracks from 2015’s “New Beginning” album: “Thrill,” “Freezer,” “Real Existence.” The Band Maid rocket launched.
The live version of this song actually used to be THE recommended first reaction recommendation. Since the Maids constantly outdo themselves, it became “Domination,” and now most recently it’s “Hate”
I’m gonna throw money at you in an attempt to bribe you into staying in the Tiny Hat Era. “The non-fiction days,” OMV
I’m curious to see what influences you hear in one of my all time favorite early Maid songs 🔥

You also mention freezer in that batch, one of my all time favorites.
Unfortunately there is only the studio track with no video to listen to, but totally worth a listen! Or if you want to go a little off the board, there is an excellent fan cover of it that you could react to… it’s really excellently done.

@@nussekuddenxxx6564 Hopefully we’ll hear from a native Japanese speaker to help. I learned that Japanese vowels always make the same sounds, so ‘e’ is always ‘eh’ and the letter ‘i’ gets the ‘ee’ sound. Where’s Flugelhorn man from Japan, little help?

@@MusicMike747 Yes, I would not know, but that is how I heard them saying it. "Ey" is a very English sound. Let's wait for a Japanese to settle this.

@@BeckMax “eh” is closest to native Japanese, true. It’s just sometimes hard for beginners to understand. Our stress on the syllables (with caps) is also wrong, but it’s a start 🤷🏻

It's great to see that you guys are still reacting to BAND-MAID. There's enough great stuff on their official channel to keep you guys busy for a while. No worries there. One of the best things about these ladies is that they are always working to improve themselves. I don't think they will ever reach the point where they think that they've learned everything there is to learn about their craft. There is no drama or ego involved and they are still the best of friends even after a decade together. Fun fact: The all girl Japanese band Scandal holds the Guinness world record for a female band having the original lineup for the longest time at 17 years. 😁
Pronunciations (To the best of my knowledge):
    Saiki: Sigh-kee (Psyche) :Lead singer
    Miku: Mee-koo :Rhythm Guitar/Vocals
    Kanami: Kah-nah-mee :Lead Guitar
    MISA: Mee-sah :Bass
    Akane: Ah-kah-nee :Drums

The maid outfits are evolving but think of the outfits this way:
    Hostess - Saiki - Spanish Suit - singer 1A
    Waitstaff - Miku - French Maid - singer 1B - rhythm guitar
Waitstaff - Kanami - French Maid - lead guitar
Barkeep - Misa - Ninja Maid - bass
Chef - Akane - Pageboy Maid - drums
Please note that it's been pointed out that Akane loves to eat and Misa loves to drink so there will be no food or booze left at this particular restaurant.
Also you can tell the age of the videos by the outfits and the instruments they are using. As for improvements I would say it's more of a confidence thing.
For some real fun watch these videos together - same song different versions

This is and always will be one of their hardest banging songs. Their early songs are really good, though they may not have been written by the band at that time, they still had to perform them and put their future signature on them.
    Band-Maid Is:
Akane Hirose (Ah-kah-nee or Ah-kah-nay) -Drums, Nickname: “Ah-chan” and "Gorilla" because she eats lots of bananas for her stamina and is a BEAST on drums. Lost her little hat back in 2018....a sad day indeed.
MISA (Mee-sah) - Bass Guitar, Nickname: "The Barefoot Assassin" MISA always performs barefoot as she states she likes to feel the music through her feet, and "kills" everything she plays.
Kanami Tono (Kah-nah-mee) - Lead Guitar/Genius Songwriter Nickname: "Mincho" “Kanamincho” ……Miku’s guitar Sensei.
Miku Kobato (Mee-koo) - Band-Maid Spokesperson/Rhythm Guitar/Lyricist/Founder/Backing Vocals/Lead Vocals…hardest working girl in music. Nickname: "Little Pigeon" (Miku’s surname means “Little Pigeon”) ....po! Getting caught up in Band-Maid means going down the “Pigeon Hole”…….. no rabbits here.
Saiki Atsumi (Sy-kee) -Lead Vocals Nickname: "The Princess" “Si-chan”. Saiki may be called The Princess but Miku is The Queen…..also Saiki is Kanami’s “crush”.

    Pronunciation guide:
Lead singer: Saiki (Sigh - key)
Rhythm guitar: Miku (Me - koo)
Lead guitar: Kanami (kah - nah - me)
    Bass: Misa (Me - sah)
Drums: Akane (ah - kahn - ney)
Not perfect, but nobody will complain. Youll have an American accent basically.

Real Existence Live was my first introduction to Band-Maid. I loved Saiki's live vocal, by that time, only Miku and Kanami were wearing maid uniform, Akane was half-maid, half-gorilla? and Saiki and Misa were Goth sisters.
Then I watched Thrill mv and the vocal sounded too clean and kind of sterile and flat, so I went through Wagakki Band phase - another great band, you should check them out.
Anyway, I've decided to give Band-Maid another chance, and it was Moratoriam or Onset. (Live) and I fell hard for them. That night, I checked out all their official videos and reactions, and went on binging their catalogue.
4 years later, there's still not a day goes by without listening to Band-Maid. 👍

one band that was doing that around this time was DESTROSE. that was the original band of drummer haruna and bassist miho who formed LOVEBITES in late 2016. DESTROSE had disbanded in 2015 right around the time this video dropped. they were considered one of the best early girl's metal bands from japan and were kind of groundbreaking when they first formed. if you want to check out DESTROSE here is a link for their song 'maze. and you get to see haruna and miho while they were still almost babies ! great band : th-cam.com/video/vgWwXA8WmOQ/w-d-xo.html
