So I genuinely love Hazbin Hotel's take on Lucifer he's very likeable. But I also realized another reason is because he is a great example of depression as a disorder forgetful, prone to hyperfixation, difficulty reaching out to others despite desperately desiring interpersonal connection, and a fear to do the things one tends to be passionate about.
Most people simply don't understand that lucifer is not pure evil. He wanted to do good for humanity but his intentions lead to chaos wich he only realised after being in hell for a while, hazbin got this really well presented. He was an angel sent to hell, he was not a demon, not a villian, he simply is the most powerful in hell giving him his position even if he doesn't enjoy ruling hell.

He gave humanity free will to express their creativity, but that free will could also be turned to darker impulses. In this universe, the angels are actually more evil than Lucifer. They banished him to hell and surrounded him with nothing but examples of humanity that had taken his gift and perverted it and then they treated him to a front seat show of murdering the people he thought to inspire every year. As far as punishments go, it's as Old Testament as it gets. Also explains his depression. Being confronted with the consequences of your failure every day and banished from your home and friends and anything nice forever tends to get a brother down.
Note how Alastor never flexed his power with Lucifer. Man knows he can’t beat him in a straight fight, so he needles him with word shanks to get under his skin. Also, it was mentioned in the first episode that Lucifer made a deal with them to spare the hellborn from the extermination, and if ya look closely, man still has his ring on

Alastor reads people extremely well, and detected Lucifers (fairly obvious) obvious insecurity about being good father. He knows Lucifer is far more powerful, but he also sense Lucifer is similar to Charlie -- not really evil and thus unlikely to do Alastor harm as long as he does not pose a threat (in the evil, violent sense). Seeing the strained father/daughter relationship, Alastor has two goals here: getting under Lucifer's skin, and reinforcing his bond with Charlie (he seeks to be a "power behind the throne" type character). If Mimsy had not interrupted so abruptly, the conflict would likely have escalated to the point Lucifer would attack Alastor resulting in Charlie getting between them, defending Alastor from her own father. Thus Alastor would successfully drive a wedge between father and daughter, derailing their reconciliation, and increase Charlies reliance on him (Alastor). So it's a good thing Mimsy came along when she did.
Depressed by his own failures, he kept his daughter at a distance. When she reaches out to him years later, he at first tries to buy her affection only to learn that all she ever wanted from him was to know who he was, which was what he was most terrified to show her. Simply beautiful writing.

honestly, the edit of this episode solidified that he is my favorite character too. I really, really struggled to find things to cut because I wanted every shot with him in it.
I think Alastor's ultimate goal is to be the new King of Hell. I think it's the reason he's been trying to appease Charlie to begin with, and he will ultimately find a way to kill Lucifer by the end. He wants to be the new Lucifer, which makes sense, because he's far more like the stereotypical depiction of the Devil.
Yeah I think he’s using charlie to his advantage-he’s banking on the fact that Lucifer wants to fix his relationship with his daughter and as a result won’t do anything to Alastor because it would upset Charlie
Something that’s really sad with Lucifer here is how he’s been cooped up in his house for months, not keeping track of how much time has passed. This is crazy accurate to people who have severe depression- time can lose all meaning, the world going on while you’re stuck in a singular routine/headspace. He still clearly loves and cares for Charlie, but, bless him. Man couldn’t see past his own trauma with Heaven, and Sinners, to initially even give her dream a chance.
100% this. You lose track of time, the world, and your loved ones. While somewhat played for laughs, this is one of the most accurate depictions of functional depression I’ve seen in a long time.
I love the detail during the last song when it flips to Charlie he sees all the spears pointing at her, his eyes widen in fear, and he swings her around into the shadows so the light is only hitting his back.
As for Alastor's writer's notes, because she has some for all the characters; he was a New Orleans Radio star who learned the importance of smiling in any situation from his mother. This gave him an immovable will, and he went on to become a radio host and also serial killer after his mother died because he killed anyone who compromised his show. That led him to hell, and he started off very ambitious because sinners retain memories and personality. 2 other hints are from when he knows how to cook Jumbalia from his mom and how Mimzy is his friend in the past life and they wear New Orleans attire.
I am so glad they made Lucifer such a caring dad. Sure he's kind of a doofus who isn't exactly good at this, but he is legit trying and does truly love Charlie. Also Hearing Alastor use profanity is GOLD. That’s how you know he’s really upset because nobody really gets to him.
My theory for the ducks is that he was fixated on the moment Charlie first laid eyes on one of his creations, the part where she sneaked in while he was working, and so he held on to that memory of her smile despite being estranged for a long time. There's also that line he sings, "I've missed that smile."
I'm guessing that Alastor feels threatened by Lucifer's involvement as he would make him redundant in a lot of ways. Right now Alastor has Charlie's confidence, and that's a valuable asset to him (note how concerned Vox was about Alastor's proximity to Charlie, especially the threat of him managing to make a deal with her). I reckon Alastor is playing an angle to set himself up as an invaluable confidant to the heir to the throne of Hell and Lucifer's presence could undo everything he'd worked to establish up to that point. It's why I think he sent Mimzy packing; it was less about caring about the hotel and more about him not wanting a wild-card present that could throw his plans for a loop. I know a lot of people want to believe Alastor has a heart underneath it all, but I'm just not buying it. Serial killers tend to be master-class manipulators and very socially adept.
A few things with Alastor here- he has always said he came to the hotel to watch people fail. While I don’t disagree with that, him saying “It’s time I remind everyone _why I am HERE_ .” then proceeding to PROTECT the place, even telling Mimzy, an old acquaintance, that she can’t be around because he “can’t have” danger there. Charlie’s mom is certainly the likely choice to have Alastor’s contract.
Alastor seems to have an interest in protecting the hotel location, and in grooming Charlie to be a powerful and active demon. But we don't know which of those goals is down to marching orders, and which is his own personal motivation.
Take note that Charlie says that she and Lucifer have never been close, but, that really just seems to be her interpretation of it. Because Lucifer said she has not called him in years. There's definitely a split between the two, but, it's not for the reason Charlie thinks. When you think about it, it makes sense that Lucifer has little sympathy for the Sinners. On Earth, evil people have to keep it on the low. But once these people arrive in Hell, they are in an environment that _encourages them to be monsters._ No social stigma, no fear of law enforcement. So, from that angle, why would the biggest degenerates of humanity ever want to change?
The “ more than anything “ and the whole interaction in this episode hit a lot of us in the “ daddy issues “ . I cried with this song , and I mean I cried like a baby .

The look on your face during the song "More Than Anything" when Lucifer sang "ill support your dream, whatever lies in store", how your face lit up like a Christmas tree, i can tell the meaning of that particular lyric is something that resonates with you personally. In fact, among most reactions ive seen with this episode among the female reactors, i can tell that there is like this deep longing for all females to hear those exact words from the men in their lives that, lets face it, in real life, woman definitely dont see or hear that kind of sentiment from men very much.
Alastor i kinda a powerfreak who wants to be above everyone else. With other deamons it's simple , he flexes his power since he is stronger. However with Lucifer it's not possible , so what he does he find something else where he has an advantage ... his connection with Charlie , which is stronger than Lucifer's , so he uses that to be superior.
Exactly. Alastor does not want anybody influencing Charlie other than himself. And who is a greater threat to that than her own father who she has unresolved issues with? When we first met Alastor in the pilot, he took up all the space in the room with his big personality and the implied threats through his reputation. But with Lucifer in the room, that just doesn't work. Alastor cannot charm him, he can't threaten him, he can't impress him. And with all that taken away, Alastor turns into another regular demon. People behave differently depending on the company that they are in. And Alastor was super on edge this entire episode, from the fake "fatherly" concern he had toward Charlie to going Godzilla on weak demons just to prove to anyone watching that he wasn't a small fry.
Something really important abt Charlie and Lucifer's relationship is that Charlie acts like her dad never wants to talk to her or see her or anything, but we quickly learn than *she's* the one whos not reciprocating. She mentions that he calls to chat, asks for favors, checks on her, etc., even if its not that often, but Lucifer says straight up that Charlie hasn't called him in *forever*, its always him reaching out first. And its not that he doesn't want to have a relationship with her, but he's scared and depressed, while she thinks he just doesn't care for her.
Chances are, the theory that Alistor is bound to Lilith is true. We won't know for sure until the show reveals more. We do have a track record with other Viv's productions; much is hinted at early on if not shown on screen in some way via background or set details. And we haven't seen anything that was theorized by the audience to be flipped completely around without a massive retcon, such as Vaggie and Charlie meeting in high school.
I noticed that during Hell’s Great Dad when Alastor is singing about being Charlie’s dad his colors were inverted. So you could say he wasn’t showing his true colors.
Lucifer was trying to keep Charlie out of the spotlight - possibly for her whole life because he doesn't want her on heavens radar. He literally pulls her out of it at the start of their song. Then at the end he tosses her up into a proper spotlight, and catches her when she comes down from it. Its all just done so beautifully

Ya Stolas is a great dad who adores his daughter. Most of the issues with their relationship either stem from the terrible relation with Stella, or from Octavia just generally being a teenager.
Yeah, I thought about that later, and admittedly, I was mostly thinking about Buckzo, Crimson, and Paimon. Stolas is kind of similar to Luci here though, in that, though he loves his daughter a lot, he does tend to let his own BS get in the way of his relationship with her. Not saying that's a bad thing (well it is, but not narratively), or that it's totally unrealistic that two dads across a 'shared' universe would share the same trait. But yeah, ultimately, I had sort of forgotten about Stolas and Blitz even being dads at all at the time I was recording. I remembered in the edit, but by then it was too late, lol.
My read on Alastor in this episode is that he sees two threats to his position at Charlie's side: Mimzy, who cares too little and could endanger the hotel And Lucifer, who cares too much and could replace him if he gets too involved Most likely, he sees Charlie as a rising star. Someone that the rest of hell underestimates (like him in the backstory we heard) but who will eventually have incredible power, maybe even more than Lucifer someday. And Alastor desperately wants to remain by her side as a trusted advisor until then so that he can use that power for his own benefit Big Jafar vibes
Alastor has been playing psychological games every time he makes a move. In order to make someone agree he lets them have a bit but not enough to succeed so they make a deal. Its a psychological tactic to make people open up but he does it as many people as he can but by disguising kindness with a sample of his power he gets leverage of their desires.
Have you noticed that Alastor did nor show his true colors (literally!) when singing that he feels Charlie as a daughter? And it is only him, not Charlie or her dad.

I grew up a total daddy’s girl, he used to talk all the time about anything! I always loved listening to him (like Charlie) but then he lost both his parents within a year/ other bad things happened to him, after and now he isn’t the same. We don’t really talk anymore and this song makes me cry every time I watch it. It hits hard because this show is just that well done.

FINALLY!!! Someone else who loves Mimzy! I really hope she and Alastor can reconnect once he's off the leash. They seem like genuine friends and I think he only sent her away bc, as he said, he can't have the Hotel in joepardy, and I think it's bc it's related to him being on a leash.
He became obsessed with ducks because the first time he showed her one she smiled. He was obsessed with making her the perfect duck, which is why they are everywhere. And explains how he says missed her smile.
Alastor's such an interesting character. Both this and the season's finale are the best examples of showing an anti-villain going through a bit of growth while also reminding us he's an antagonist. It's clear his intentions are to turn Charlie against her father in this episode, but he still tells Mimzy to hit the road unless she wants a chance at redemption, implying that he's warmed up to Charlie's wacky hotel experiment a little bit. And in the finale, he admits to Niffty that seeing Charlie's plan to help "wayward souls find connection" actually pay off in some way has touched him a little, but losing the fight with Adam caused him to remind himself on why he's here and made him more determined than ever to get out of his little deal and takeover hell. I'm so curious to see what they go with his character from here.

I knew I’d love Lucifer when I found out (even before the show came out) he was voiced by Jeremy Jordan. He voiced another character I adored in the Tangled show and I hoped he would be as quirky and goofy as him. I was not disappointed Lucifer couldn’t let Angel Dust have my heart for even a full episode lol
Alastor is a psychopath. I even compared him to the psychopathy checklist. In life, he was a serial killer who was killed while burying a body, after being mistaken for a deer by a hunter (it's something from the q&a's). Alastor feels threatened because he's not used to not being the powerful person in the room. So to regain control of the situation, he engaged in a manipulation tactic known as social engineering, which is commonly used by psychopaths, and that he's actually used before, wherein he identifies an emotional weakness and attacks it.
Vivziepop is using 7th Deadly Sins with this source of information material. Just like that in her hell you have 7th rings which are one under another and pride ring is on top has 9 cycles 1. Pentagram city, 2.Imp city; ... The fact that Alastor’s eye was twitching when Lucifer was hugging Charlie, it just sends me to view it as a hint of envy or jealousy. I feel like Alastor has a little bit of genuine care for them
Possible reasons for Alastor: A. Lucifer insulted Alastor and work on the hotel in the song, so is pushing back. B. Lucifer insinuating that they need help downplaying Alastor's abilities and doing things that would replace him. C. Charlie is powerful with daddy issues, Alastor might want to fill that powerful male roll that Lucifer left vacant and become a trusted figure, Lucifer returning threatens this so Alastor reminds Charlie that Lucifer wasn't there for her like he was, attempting to cement his position by her side. Actual answer: Lucifer is far more powerful than him and that makes him uncomfortable, so he flexes the one thing he has over him, a relationship with his daughter.
Probably just my own personal projection, but in my head I took that scene where Lilith took Charlie away from him as when she left Lucifer. Yet again, the only thing Lucifer cared about is taken away from him. So Lucifer just shut himself off from Charlie to save himself from losing her all over again even though he clear wanted nothing more than to be in her life. You take enough hits, eventually you just can't take anymore
Hmmm, I think the only entity in Hell that we're seen so far that has "impacted" Alastor was Zestial -- his eyes reflected an emotion (fear, unease, surprise of an unpleasant sort) when Zestial first showed up and greeted him. All of the rest of his interactions with his fellow Overloard were congenial -- charming (in the Alastor way), but aloof and redirecting. He didn't seem fazed for long, but it there, however briefly. As for who holds Alastor's leash? The logical answer -- as in every single story beat supports the hypothesis -- is Lilith. Mayyybe he's there because whomever owns his soul cracked the whip and said -- go forth, and make sure the princess of Hell (and by extension her interests) are seen to; to keep her (or at least the Hotel and what it represents) safe... OR maybe he's there for a more self interested reason: something concerning Charlie (likely Charlie herself) gives him an edge, and out, and trump card (because Alastor is good at cards, or gambling, otherwise Husker wouldn't have lost his freedom in a game of chance) to leverage against his owner. I know she doesn't USE it, but Charlie IS the princess of Hell. Her dad is Lucifer, a fallen Seraphim and the King of Hell, and her mom is Lilith, the first woman (an equal to Adam? -- or so the story goes), and the organizer, patron and Queen of Hell. This goes to my thinking on what Alastor was doing taking the attitude he did with Lucifer -- an interloper, and potential threat to his manipulation/control over Charlie. So, needling Lucifer killed two demons with one stone. It pissed off Lucifer (who repeatedly insulted him -- that's been shown to be one of Alastor's triggers), and furthered his goals of cementing himself as Charlie's strongest, most loyal supporter. Also, if the eye twitches were any indication of emotional response, Alastor didn't want Lucifer there from the start. If he can get rid of Lucifer, Alastor's the only voice whispering in Charlie's ear. So to speak. Or it may be a combination of the two. Maybe he HAS to protect Hazbin, or Charlie (thought he stated point blank to Mimzy the hotel was what he was protecting, not Charlie; still could have been omitting, because why would you tell a potential liability all your weak points) , but is still keeping Charlie "in his back pocket" as a means to an end. Through deception either to his owner or Charlie or both. Just thoughts. Maybe the picture, or the parameters, will become clearer as the series continues. My headcannon is about this "rivary" is Luc is the main powerhouse. But Al is not who he said in the whole session... I have a pretty sure brainbug he not the radio... But the control demon who sold his soul to someone and lost most of his power. He could be a same level of power as Stolas...
The Demons of Hell will show their true revealed forms when they get angry or lose emotional control, much like Alastor turns into his Wendigo form when he gets Angry and the angrier he gets the more the form manifests. This is what you saw happen with Charlie when she started laughing maniacally and grew big red horns. Also Lucifer does have a Deal with Heaven and it's mentioned in the First Episode when Charlie is speaking with Adam and Lute. Lute states that Charlie is Lucky that Lucifer made Charlie and the Hellborn exempt from an exorcist's blade, this is due to the Deal Lucifer has with Heaven and the Angels. The deal is that Lucifer will not interfere in their purges so long as the exorcists ONLY target Sinners, because they had their chance to do good, but that the Hellborn were for the most part never given that chance. Alastor is trying to play Charlie's 'Dad' because he knows it will piss off Lucifer.......

Lots of comments already nailed this but yeah Alastor is literally threatened by Lucifer. He's a control freak that cannot handle being disregarded. Even with sinners he considers beneath him he makes a point to hit them in their insecurities (such as deliberately never remembering Pentious, who just wants people to acknowledge him). He LOVES being in close with Charlie because she's the third most powerful person in hell but she's too sweet to use it. By getting in with her, nobody can mess with him period - EXCEPT for Lucifer. You can just see how he can't STAND that. The second he picked up on Lucifer's insecurity as a father, he pounced on that and rubbed Lucifer's face in it.
Alastor loves to push buttons, He like to wach them powerless, it is entertaining for him. Now, he knows Lucifer could outright obliteratehim, but at the same time, he can see how much Charlie means to him. So what does he do? He pushes the 'Dad' buttons, saying'looky here hotshot, I've been helping your little girl and now you're being replaced. You are obsolete!' and he knows that any actual attck on him byLucifer would result in Charlie seing it as an attack on the Hotel she has worked so hard to build. Her dad shows up and starts banishing her staff to the shadow realm - Not a good look. So he knows as long as he is helping Charlie, Lucifer is reduced to petty one-ups because he can't outright do anything to Alastor. and that thought amuses him greatly. The King himself cannot touch him.
More Than Anything is such a beautiful song, It's become my favorite of the series even in a season full of great ones. I love this vision of Lucifer as a broken idealist, litterally crippled by depression and yet still doing what he can to protect and support his daughter even as he struggles. I am hoping though that Lilith is more than just a big bad, I think it would be more interesting if her motives were also good even if to achieve her goals required she make the terrible choice to leave her family. It wasn't actually a change in Alastor, he's been this way the whole season. Alastor's calculating and manipulative and intelligent, but he's also a petty bitch. Every time someone brushes him off or tries to put themselves over him he gets irritated. The mans ego is the size of Hell itself. He can't physically overpower Lucifer. so instead he's flexing how he's inserted himself into Charlie's good graces in a way that allows him to outright insult Lucifer to his face and still have his own daughter defend him. He clocked Lucifer's parental insecurity immediately at the start and used that to wound him, put himself over him, and it's even more effective because it's not even wrong; motives aside Alastor has been there while Lucifer hasn't been. As funny as it is, that pettiness is also an interesting flaw for a Chess Master villain archetype like Alastor to have.
Alastor loves being the centre of the room, loves being the most powerful and attention grabbing. Lucifer being here cancels all of that out and Alastor knows he can’t do shit about it because Lucifer could smite him before blinking as Lucifer is the most powerful being in hell and their undisputed king surrounded by a bunch of greedy overlords and yet has never been overthrown. So Alastor attack’s Lucifer’s position as a father because it's the only thing he thinks he can leverage Lucifer over- his bond with Charlie…
My personal headcanon is that charlie was used as a hostage against lucifer ones. Maybe when she was a baby. And thats what broke him, he had to choose between all his people and his daughter. Seeing how his part of the song is all about charlie means more than anything else to him. With lilith being depicted as the one thriving in hell, this choice might also be the reason the parted ways. But thats all just speculations.
i theorize that Alastor's plan was to get charlie and lucifer to make up all along, but just went about it in his petty, weird way. He did the whole thing about "having a bond with her" just so it can make lucifer realize that he hasn't been here since the start of her dream and yet he has, and that if he doesn't step up now, someone can very easily take charlie away from him
I have a theory that Alastor hate fathers that abandoned their children. Maybe because of his past (maybe abandoned by his father and has to live hell alongside with his mother) which resulted to him becoming a psychotic murderer.

I think what got under Alastor's skin was he assumed Lucifer was this imposing intimidating all powerful ruler. And shows up as this short not serious goof ball. He thought this is the guy im supposed to respect and compete against?

I think that Alastor’s deal will be with Eve and not Lilith, his motivation in the song I think her wants Charlie dependant on him/build trust. That way he can get her to make a deal with her to help him get out of his deal. Lucifer, Lilith and Charlie are the most powerful so having favours from them is in his best interest.

So strange that the same backstory they tell for Alastor in the Pilot, they only retell as far as in Episode 5 in the series. Like, having seen the Pilot I could not imagine only knowing all this "appeared in Hell already strong, broadcasted his kills" thing about him by Episode 5 and being confused about him this long.

So I genuinely love Hazbin Hotel's take on Lucifer he's very likeable. But I also realized another reason is because he is a great example of depression as a disorder forgetful, prone to hyperfixation, difficulty reaching out to others despite desperately desiring interpersonal connection, and a fear to do the things one tends to be passionate about.
Most people simply don't understand that lucifer is not pure evil.
He wanted to do good for humanity but his intentions lead to chaos wich he only realised after being in hell for a while, hazbin got this really well presented.
He was an angel sent to hell, he was not a demon, not a villian, he simply is the most powerful in hell giving him his position even if he doesn't enjoy ruling hell.

Alastor reads people extremely well, and detected Lucifers (fairly obvious) obvious insecurity about being good father. He knows Lucifer is far more powerful, but he also sense Lucifer is similar to Charlie -- not really evil and thus unlikely to do Alastor harm as long as he does not pose a threat (in the evil, violent sense). Seeing the strained father/daughter relationship, Alastor has two goals here: getting under Lucifer's skin, and reinforcing his bond with Charlie (he seeks to be a "power behind the throne" type character). If Mimsy had not interrupted so abruptly, the conflict would likely have escalated to the point Lucifer would attack Alastor resulting in Charlie getting between them, defending Alastor from her own father. Thus Alastor would successfully drive a wedge between father and daughter, derailing their reconciliation, and increase Charlies reliance on him (Alastor). So it's a good thing Mimsy came along when she did.
Depressed by his own failures, he kept his daughter at a distance. When she reaches out to him years later, he at first tries to buy her affection only to learn that all she ever wanted from him was to know who he was, which was what he was most terrified to show her. Simply beautiful writing.

honestly, the edit of this episode solidified that he is my favorite character too. I really, really struggled to find things to cut because I wanted every shot with him in it.

Alastor's not trying to be Charlie's father figure. He's deliberately pissing off Lucifer.
I think Alastor's ultimate goal is to be the new King of Hell. I think it's the reason he's been trying to appease Charlie to begin with, and he will ultimately find a way to kill Lucifer by the end. He wants to be the new Lucifer, which makes sense, because he's far more like the stereotypical depiction of the Devil.

Something that’s really sad with Lucifer here is how he’s been cooped up in his house for months, not keeping track of how much time has passed. This is crazy accurate to people who have severe depression- time can lose all meaning, the world going on while you’re stuck in a singular routine/headspace. He still clearly loves and cares for Charlie, but, bless him. Man couldn’t see past his own trauma with Heaven, and Sinners, to initially even give her dream a chance.
100% this. You lose track of time, the world, and your loved ones. While somewhat played for laughs, this is one of the most accurate depictions of functional depression I’ve seen in a long time.
I love the detail during the last song when it flips to Charlie he sees all the spears pointing at her, his eyes widen in fear, and he swings her around into the shadows so the light is only hitting his back.
As for Alastor's writer's notes, because she has some for all the characters; he was a New Orleans Radio star who learned the importance of smiling in any situation from his mother. This gave him an immovable will, and he went on to become a radio host and also serial killer after his mother died because he killed anyone who compromised his show. That led him to hell, and he started off very ambitious because sinners retain memories and personality. 2 other hints are from when he knows how to cook Jumbalia from his mom and how Mimzy is his friend in the past life and they wear New Orleans attire.
I am so glad they made Lucifer such a caring dad. Sure he's kind of a doofus who isn't exactly good at this, but he is legit trying and does truly love Charlie. Also Hearing Alastor use profanity is GOLD. That’s how you know he’s really upset because nobody really gets to him.
My theory for the ducks is that he was fixated on the moment Charlie first laid eyes on one of his creations, the part where she sneaked in while he was working, and so he held on to that memory of her smile despite being estranged for a long time. There's also that line he sings, "I've missed that smile."

That memory most likely turned into slight desperate insnanity when he was left alone with his thoughts and regrets for way too long.
I'm guessing that Alastor feels threatened by Lucifer's involvement as he would make him redundant in a lot of ways. Right now Alastor has Charlie's confidence, and that's a valuable asset to him (note how concerned Vox was about Alastor's proximity to Charlie, especially the threat of him managing to make a deal with her). I reckon Alastor is playing an angle to set himself up as an invaluable confidant to the heir to the throne of Hell and Lucifer's presence could undo everything he'd worked to establish up to that point. It's why I think he sent Mimzy packing; it was less about caring about the hotel and more about him not wanting a wild-card present that could throw his plans for a loop. I know a lot of people want to believe Alastor has a heart underneath it all, but I'm just not buying it. Serial killers tend to be master-class manipulators and very socially adept.
A few things with Alastor here- he has always said he came to the hotel to watch people fail. While I don’t disagree with that, him saying “It’s time I remind everyone _why I am HERE_ .” then proceeding to PROTECT the place, even telling Mimzy, an old acquaintance, that she can’t be around because he “can’t have” danger there. Charlie’s mom is certainly the likely choice to have Alastor’s contract.
Alastor seems to have an interest in protecting the hotel location, and in grooming Charlie to be a powerful and active demon. But we don't know which of those goals is down to marching orders, and which is his own personal motivation.
Take note that Charlie says that she and Lucifer have never been close, but, that really just seems to be her interpretation of it. Because Lucifer said she has not called him in years. There's definitely a split between the two, but, it's not for the reason Charlie thinks.
When you think about it, it makes sense that Lucifer has little sympathy for the Sinners. On Earth, evil people have to keep it on the low. But once these people arrive in Hell, they are in an environment that _encourages them to be monsters._ No social stigma, no fear of law enforcement. So, from that angle, why would the biggest degenerates of humanity ever want to change?

The look on your face during the song "More Than Anything" when Lucifer sang "ill support your dream, whatever lies in store", how your face lit up like a Christmas tree, i can tell the meaning of that particular lyric is something that resonates with you personally. In fact, among most reactions ive seen with this episode among the female reactors, i can tell that there is like this deep longing for all females to hear those exact words from the men in their lives that, lets face it, in real life, woman definitely dont see or hear that kind of sentiment from men very much.

Exactly. Alastor does not want anybody influencing Charlie other than himself. And who is a greater threat to that than her own father who she has unresolved issues with?
When we first met Alastor in the pilot, he took up all the space in the room with his big personality and the implied threats through his reputation. But with Lucifer in the room, that just doesn't work. Alastor cannot charm him, he can't threaten him, he can't impress him. And with all that taken away, Alastor turns into another regular demon.
People behave differently depending on the company that they are in. And Alastor was super on edge this entire episode, from the fake "fatherly" concern he had toward Charlie to going Godzilla on weak demons just to prove to anyone watching that he wasn't a small fry.

Something really important abt Charlie and Lucifer's relationship is that Charlie acts like her dad never wants to talk to her or see her or anything, but we quickly learn than *she's* the one whos not reciprocating. She mentions that he calls to chat, asks for favors, checks on her, etc., even if its not that often, but Lucifer says straight up that Charlie hasn't called him in *forever*, its always him reaching out first.
And its not that he doesn't want to have a relationship with her, but he's scared and depressed, while she thinks he just doesn't care for her.
Chances are, the theory that Alistor is bound to Lilith is true. We won't know for sure until the show reveals more. We do have a track record with other Viv's productions; much is hinted at early on if not shown on screen in some way via background or set details. And we haven't seen anything that was theorized by the audience to be flipped completely around without a massive retcon, such as Vaggie and Charlie meeting in high school.
I noticed that during Hell’s Great Dad when Alastor is singing about being Charlie’s dad his colors were inverted. So you could say he wasn’t showing his true colors.
Lucifer was trying to keep Charlie out of the spotlight - possibly for her whole life because he doesn't want her on heavens radar. He literally pulls her out of it at the start of their song. Then at the end he tosses her up into a proper spotlight, and catches her when she comes down from it. Its all just done so beautifully

Ya Stolas is a great dad who adores his daughter. Most of the issues with their relationship either stem from the terrible relation with Stella, or from Octavia just generally being a teenager.
Yeah, I thought about that later, and admittedly, I was mostly thinking about Buckzo, Crimson, and Paimon. Stolas is kind of similar to Luci here though, in that, though he loves his daughter a lot, he does tend to let his own BS get in the way of his relationship with her. Not saying that's a bad thing (well it is, but not narratively), or that it's totally unrealistic that two dads across a 'shared' universe would share the same trait. But yeah, ultimately, I had sort of forgotten about Stolas and Blitz even being dads at all at the time I was recording. I remembered in the edit, but by then it was too late, lol.

My read on Alastor in this episode is that he sees two threats to his position at Charlie's side:
Mimzy, who cares too little and could endanger the hotel
And Lucifer, who cares too much and could replace him if he gets too involved
Most likely, he sees Charlie as a rising star. Someone that the rest of hell underestimates (like him in the backstory we heard) but who will eventually have incredible power, maybe even more than Lucifer someday. And Alastor desperately wants to remain by her side as a trusted advisor until then so that he can use that power for his own benefit

Alastor has been playing psychological games every time he makes a move. In order to make someone agree he lets them have a bit but not enough to succeed so they make a deal. Its a psychological tactic to make people open up but he does it as many people as he can but by disguising kindness with a sample of his power he gets leverage of their desires.

I grew up a total daddy’s girl, he used to talk all the time about anything! I always loved listening to him (like Charlie) but then he lost both his parents within a year/ other bad things happened to him, after and now he isn’t the same. FINALLY!!! Someone else who loves Mimzy! I really hope she and Alastor can reconnect once he's off the leash. They seem like genuine friends and I think he only sent her away bc, as he said, he can't have the Hotel in joepardy, and I think it's bc it's related to him being on a leash.
He became obsessed with ducks because the first time he showed her one she smiled. He was obsessed with making her the perfect duck, which is why they are everywhere. And explains how he says missed her smile.
Alastor's such an interesting character. Both this and the season's finale are the best examples of showing an anti-villain going through a bit of growth while also reminding us he's an antagonist. It's clear his intentions are to turn Charlie against her father in this episode, but he still tells Mimzy to hit the road unless she wants a chance at redemption, implying that he's warmed up to Charlie's wacky hotel experiment a little bit.
And in the finale, he admits to Niffty that seeing Charlie's plan to help "wayward souls find connection" actually pay off in some way has touched him a little, but losing the fight with Adam caused him to remind himself on why he's here and made him more determined than ever to get out of his little deal and takeover hell. I'm so curious to see what they go with his character from here.

Alastor is a psychopath. I even compared him to the psychopathy checklist. In life, he was a serial killer who was killed while burying a body, after being mistaken for a deer by a hunter (it's something from the q&a's). Alastor feels threatened because he's not used to not being the powerful person in the room. So to regain control of the situation, he engaged in a manipulation tactic known as social engineering, which is commonly used by psychopaths, and that he's actually used before, wherein he identifies an emotional weakness and attacks it.

A. Lucifer insulted Alastor and work on the hotel in the song, so is pushing back.
B. Lucifer insinuating that they need help downplaying Alastor's abilities and doing things that would replace him.
C. Charlie is powerful with daddy issues, Alastor might want to fill that powerful male roll that Lucifer left vacant and become a trusted figure, Lucifer returning threatens this so Alastor reminds Charlie that Lucifer wasn't there for her like he was, attempting to cement his position by her side.

Actual answer: Lucifer is far more powerful than him and that makes him uncomfortable, so he flexes the one thing he has over him, a relationship with his daughter.
Probably just my own personal projection, but in my head I took that scene where Lilith took Charlie away from him as when she left Lucifer. Yet again, the only thing Lucifer cared about is taken away from him. So Lucifer just shut himself off from Charlie to save himself from losing her all over again even though he clear wanted nothing more than to be in her life. You take enough hits, eventually you just can't take anymore

Hmmm, I think the only entity in Hell that we're seen so far that has "impacted" Alastor was Zestial -- his eyes reflected an emotion (fear, unease, surprise of an unpleasant sort) when Zestial first showed up and greeted him. All of the rest of his interactions with his fellow Overloard were congenial -- charming (in the Alastor way), but aloof and redirecting. He didn't seem fazed for long, but it there, however briefly.
As for who holds Alastor's leash? The logical answer -- as in every single story beat supports the hypothesis -- is Lilith. Mayyybe he's there because whomever owns his soul cracked the whip and said -- go forth, and make sure the princess of Hell (and by extension her interests) are seen to; to keep her (or at least the Hotel and what it represents) safe... OR maybe he's there for a more self interested reason: something concerning Charlie (likely Charlie herself) gives him an edge, and out, and trump card (because Alastor is good at cards, or gambling, otherwise Husker wouldn't have lost his freedom in a game of chance) to leverage against his owner. I know she doesn't USE it, but Charlie IS the princess of Hell. Her dad is Lucifer, a fallen Seraphim and the King of Hell, and her mom is Lilith, the first woman (an equal to Adam? -- or so the story goes), and the organizer, patron and Queen of Hell.
This goes to my thinking on what Alastor was doing taking the attitude he did with Lucifer -- an interloper, and potential threat to his manipulation/control over Charlie. So, needling Lucifer killed two demons with one stone. It pissed off Lucifer (who repeatedly insulted him -- that's been shown to be one of Alastor's triggers), and furthered his goals of cementing himself as Charlie's strongest, most loyal supporter. Also, if the eye twitches were any indication of emotional response, Alastor didn't want Lucifer there from the start. If he can get rid of Lucifer, Alastor's the only voice whispering in Charlie's ear. So to speak.
Or it may be a combination of the two. Maybe he HAS to protect Hazbin, or Charlie (thought he stated point blank to Mimzy the hotel was what he was protecting, not Charlie; still could have been omitting, because why would you tell a potential liability all your weak points) , but is still keeping Charlie "in his back pocket" as a means to an end. Through deception either to his owner or Charlie or both.
Just thoughts. Maybe the picture, or the parameters, will become clearer as the series continues.

My headcannon is about this "rivary" is Luc is the main powerhouse. But Al is not who he said in the whole session... I have a pretty sure brainbug he not the radio... But the control demon who sold his soul to someone and lost most of his power. He could be a same level of power as Stolas...
The Demons of Hell will show their true revealed forms when they get angry or lose emotional control, much like Alastor turns into his Wendigo form when he gets Angry and the angrier he gets the more the form manifests. This is what you saw happen with Charlie when she started laughing maniacally and grew big red horns.
Also Lucifer does have a Deal with Heaven and it's mentioned in the First Episode when Charlie is speaking with Adam and Lute. Lute states that Charlie is Lucky that Lucifer made Charlie and the Hellborn exempt from an exorcist's blade, this is due to the Deal Lucifer has with Heaven and the Angels. The deal is that Lucifer will not interfere in their purges so long as the exorcists ONLY target Sinners, because they had their chance to do good, but that the Hellborn were for the most part never given that chance.
Alastor is trying to play Charlie's 'Dad' because he knows it will piss off Lucifer.......

Lots of comments already nailed this but yeah Alastor is literally threatened by Lucifer. He's a control freak that cannot handle being disregarded. Even with sinners he considers beneath him he makes a point to hit them in their insecurities (such as deliberately never remembering Pentious, who just wants people to acknowledge him). He LOVES being in close with Charlie because she's the third most powerful person in hell but she's too sweet to use it. By getting in with her, nobody can mess with him period - EXCEPT for Lucifer. You can just see how he can't STAND that. The second he picked up on Lucifer's insecurity as a father, he pounced on that and rubbed Lucifer's face in it.
Alastor loves to push buttons, He like to wach them powerless, it is entertaining for him. Now, he knows Lucifer could outright obliteratehim, but at the same time, he can see how much Charlie means to him. So what does he do? He pushes the 'Dad' buttons, saying'looky here hotshot, I've been helping your little girl and now you're being replaced. You are obsolete!' and he knows that any actual attck on him byLucifer would result in Charlie seing it as an attack on the Hotel she has worked so hard to build. Her dad shows up and starts banishing her staff to the shadow realm - Not a good look.
So he knows as long as he is helping Charlie, Lucifer is reduced to petty one-ups because he can't outright do anything to Alastor.
and that thought amuses him greatly. The King himself cannot touch him.
More Than Anything is such a beautiful song, It's become my favorite of the series even in a season full of great ones. I love this vision of Lucifer as a broken idealist, litterally crippled by depression and yet still doing what he can to protect and support his daughter even as he struggles. I am hoping though that Lilith is more than just a big bad, I think it would be more interesting if her motives were also good even if to achieve her goals required she make the terrible choice to leave her family.
It wasn't actually a change in Alastor, he's been this way the whole season. Alastor's calculating and manipulative and intelligent, but he's also a petty bitch. Every time someone brushes him off or tries to put themselves over him he gets irritated. The mans ego is the size of Hell itself. He can't physically overpower Lucifer. so instead he's flexing how he's inserted himself into Charlie's good graces in a way that allows him to outright insult Lucifer to his face and still have his own daughter defend him. He clocked Lucifer's parental insecurity immediately at the start and used that to wound him, put himself over him, and it's even more effective because it's not even wrong; motives aside Alastor has been there while Lucifer hasn't been. As funny as it is, that pettiness is also an interesting flaw for a Chess Master villain archetype like Alastor to have.
Alastor loves being the centre of the room, loves being the most powerful and attention grabbing. Lucifer being here cancels all of that out and Alastor knows he can’t do shit about it because Lucifer could smite him before blinking as Lucifer is the most powerful being in hell and their undisputed king surrounded by a bunch of greedy overlords and yet has never been overthrown.
So Alastor attack’s Lucifer’s position as a father because it's the only thing he thinks he can leverage Lucifer over- his bond with Charlie…
My personal headcanon is that charlie was used as a hostage against lucifer ones. Maybe when she was a baby. And thats what broke him, he had to choose between all his people and his daughter. Seeing how his part of the song is all about charlie means more than anything else to him. With lilith being depicted as the one thriving in hell, this choice might also be the reason the parted ways. But thats all just speculations.
i theorize that Alastor's plan was to get charlie and lucifer to make up all along, but just went about it in his petty, weird way. He did the whole thing about "having a bond with her" just so it can make lucifer realize that he hasn't been here since the start of her dream and yet he has, and that if he doesn't step up now, someone can very easily take charlie away from him
I have a theory that Alastor hate fathers that abandoned their children. Maybe because of his past (maybe abandoned by his father and has to live hell alongside with his mother) which resulted to him becoming a psychotic murderer.
so with alastor - 2 of my thoughts:
rivalry with lucifer - my gut says it’s a power play of sorts. someone else in the comments said he knows he can’t beat lucifer with just raw power so it was an emotional attack. also al likes to be powerful; knowing lucifer is the most powerful might have probably made lucifer feel like a threat of sorts lol like, with vox, al can brush him off. but the king of hell who doesn’t know who al is? yeah al took that personally lmao
him defending the hotel - he obviously has his ulterior motives. i just thought he doesn’t want anything to ruin his plans. but i also think there is definitely a connection between him and lilith since they were gone around the same amount of time indeed. i guess we’ll have to see!
its the power dynamics. Alastor know he is not as powerful Lucifer. but he always want to be in control and be in charge. so he use his connections with her as leverage. because comparing to Lucifer, she has more connections with Alastor than her dad at the moment

I think your theory with Alastor is spot on, I hate how people hero worship him and paint him up like he's a super power when it's far more obvious he's a greedy scumbag that was probably jaded by his weakness and wanted all the power right away so he struck a deal.
I think what got under Alastor's skin was he assumed Lucifer was this imposing intimidating all powerful ruler. And shows up as this short not serious goof ball. He thought this is the guy im supposed to respect and compete against?

I really hope Lilith isn't bad :/ I don't want another Stella, that would be boring. It looks like Charlie and Lucifer still love Lilith and they looked very happy on those photos, so I'm theorizing that she loves them too and had a good reason to leave, she probably has a bigger plan that required her being away from them for a while, or something/someone is forcing her to stay away.
Fairly convinced that Alastor is well under this "seven years" onus, and that it's likely his Lilith leash chafing him.

I think that Alastor’s deal will be with Eve and not Lilith, his motivation in the song I think her wants Charlie dependant on him/build trust. That way he can get her to make a deal with her to help him get out of his deal.
Lucifer, Lilith and Charlie are the most powerful so having favours from them is in his best interest.

I think Lilith is going to be a bad person Charlie said that she thrives in hell. Also the symbolism of Lucifer shielding Charlie from the angles by putting her in the darkness. Which I take that there’s something she been kept in the dark about.

So strange that the same backstory they tell for Alastor in the Pilot, they only retell as far as in Episode 5 in the series. Like, having seen the Pilot I could not imagine only knowing all this "appeared in Hell already strong, broadcasted his kills" thing about him by Episode 5 and being confused about him this long.
