Eric, my game was in serious decline for a month. Nothing was working. Went on a two week vacation and then caught your video when I returned. One practice session yesterday at the range and then shot the best round of the year today, by far. This was just what I needed!
@cogornogolf hi Eric - great video! I struggle with arm tension specifically with my driver. Would any of your tips change for the driver? How about the feeling of the chest turn? Could be a hack to better shallow the driver to lead with the chest feeling. Excited to try it out
Beginner golfer here. I’ve swung a club a few times before buying my first set but never knew how to actually swing well in technical terms. I’ve started watching your videos and already feel like I’ve improved so much. I know the improvement is never ending in golf, but this is definitely a great start! Thank you for doing what you do!
Love to hear that!! Welcome to the game--hope you continue to enjoy it! Lots of patience but incredibly rewarding when you get it right :) Appreciate the support!
Eric, I appreciate all your videos but I think this one has helped me the most. I took this to the course and noticed an immediate improvement. I have always struggled with getting too quick in transition and just chalked it up to bad timing. This lesson helped me get on track immediately. Thanks!
Great advice, Eric. As a by-product of relaxing hand and arms, I note that a ball getting hit with full arm extension is always a more powerful shot than one where the arms and hands feel tight...and tend to pull back towards the body. I started noticing that pullback with my driver...and the resulting shots that feel off and thin....and with tendency to spin in unwanted ways. Relaxing and setting up with full arm extension makes a world of difference with all clubs.
Another great video - I’ve been working with my pro on the same thing. The problem for me is that while I’ve become pretty efficient on short irons, using this for driver does not come easy. A whole new person comes in to possess my body when that long club appears. Nonetheless, thank you for your continuing help via TH-cam!
Great video. This is my struggle i catch myself gripping the club witha death grip sometimes and have to remind myself to relax. So going to try this in my practice tomorrow. Thanks for all the great vids!! Cheers ✌️
Same for Driver? I once Heard grip pressure should match holding a small bird. This reiterates that concept. Now if i can just do it every shot. 😮. Good stuff.
Haha yeah I would TRY and FEEL this with all clubs and see what kind of results you get. If those feels help roll with it....if not find out whats causing the issues and hammer those!
I experienced the effortless power of a golf swing only several times in my lifetime. What I felt was the weight of the club catapulting the ball down the fairway with the effortless power you speak of. That feeling has escaped me ever since. The kinetic sequence that creates the centrifugal force is a very fleeting motion. Your demonstration of the grip pressure, arm hang and trunk/shoulder rotation is very essential in creating an effortless swing. Do you think you begin your forward swing by focusing on your upper body unwinding before your lower body which you stated in your hands, arms, upper body demonstration? I believe the kinetic change starts from the ground up but perhaps it doesn’t. Centrifugal force is a hard thing to teach and even more elusive, at least for me. I enjoy your instructional videos. Thanks,Jim
Thanks Jim! It for sure starts from the ground up when measured.....BUT.....what CAUSES that? You could say that the INTENT from your brain to SWING YOUR ARMS.......MAKES......that lower body sequence start. Just like swinging a bat or throwing a ball.....our brains intent is to hit the ball (swing the bat) or throw the ball (arm) and that INTENT creates the reaction of the body motion (ground up)
I agree that the thought from the brain initiates any movement your body makes. I think focusing on certain parts of the body can influence a person’s natural eye hand coordination. Your demonstration of simplifying the hands, arms and turning /rotating of the upper body is a great approach for all levels of ability. Thanks, jim
Totally agree with everything said in this video! Unfortunately there are some instructors saying "let the arms dominate and the body react", in essence reverse sequencing and casting. I don't pay attention to them, but they are very stubborn with their "facts".
Fantastic tip of the day Eric. Was fighting the pulls and the closed face and it dawned on me that I had increased my squeeze pressure. Put on golf clothes and flew to the range and "bingo". Nice square face and much improved strike. Thanks
This is an excellent segment Eric. What do you feel is the importance of keeping your hands in front of the chest throughout the swing? What is your definition of connection?
Thank you!! been working on grip pressure. Finding good results from a lighter grip and soft arms and shoulders. Brendon on Be Better Golf recently posted a couple of videos with an individual who developed a system to measure grip pressure. He has measured various golfers from amateurs to pros and claims that high level golfers increase grip pressure during transition and decrease it before and through impact. Thoughts?
Awesome stuff Eric. Any tips for trying to maintain a ‘straight’ left arm whilst keeping them feeling dead weight? I find as I try to release a tense left arm, my arm starts to bend.
For sure----check this one Trevor and I did on that exact thing while keeping effortless here: th-cam.com/video/fRVO2vVOtOg/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUXRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIGVmZm9ydGxlc3M%3D
Decades ago, once and once only I had that type of swing for one round of golf, my ball went farther and had so much more energy after the round I wanted to play another 18, but after that day I didn't realize what I had done, so I went back to a more tense swing, distance suffered. Mentally it's hard for many people realize that less can be more in anything including golf, so you have to believe in the process and execute. STAY FOCUSED at EVERY SHOT. Golf is more mental than physical IMO
Question = how important is staying "tall" at setup during all this? Cause many/most are either bending over too much OR bending their knees too much .... worse .. both ... and the importance of using the length of your body to achieve this effortless swing in any rhythm is extremely important... .i'm hoping you do a video about this = not crowding the plate/ground too much .... love your videos as always ... one of the best ;)
Thanks Gunnar! For sure I think thats PART of it.... In reality EVERYTHING matters :) Setup posture, grip, arm structure, swing plane, wrist angles, arm rotation, etc etc lol.....just cant go over them all each vid But for the posture I like this one to start that would pair well: th-cam.com/video/sFApkC1N-L4/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUmRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIHdoeSBhbWF0ZXVycyBlYXJseSBleHRlbmQ%3D
Is all this the same for the Driver & long irons? My practice swing feels great but my actual swing gets tense and a mess and balls go right and off the toe. Thanks!
Yeah, I would TRY and FEEL this with all clubs and see what kind of results you get. If those feels help roll with it....if not find out whats causing the issues and hammer those!
This is definitely a key concept for power, release and low point control but very difficult to do as the sensation is of " loss of control " The grip generally tenses up at the top of the backswing as this is where you feel the weight of the club the most and the " need" to control comes in.
This is going to get implanted immediately. I know that I play the best when I’m swinging “freely”. This is going to help when I begin to feel stiff and ridged.
Especially in the recent hot and humid weather, I was a little wary of relaxing too much....lol....as my hands and glove were getting sweaty....and I had the fear of the club slipping from my hands. Happened once...but | was really exagerating whip....lol.
So I notice your grip with irons, left hand crease neutral, pointing straight up and right hand stronger and crease pointing to back shoulder.. But in driver lessons, u have stronger right and left so creases aim to back shoulder So more neutral for irons and stronger for driver?
Whenever I feel like I’ve “warmed up” after 5 or so holes, the change is that THIS feel takes over. Trying like hell to start with it from the first tee..
Struggling with turning over the trail arm and getting that “finish position” feels like I’m just going to pull/snap hook as the right hand feels dominant at impact and afterwards. (RH)
Hey! Some of this depends on your GRIP....if your right hand grip is turned STRONGER (clockwise) that would make sense that you would feel that......you may need to FEEL like you "hold it off" more through the ball Try this one: th-cam.com/video/XiGbh1SyBXY/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUdRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIHJpZ2h0IGFybSB3aW5kb3c%3D
I love your videos, but I'm confused about something with this one. I don't get how I'm supposed to have hands and arms relaxed, but also focus on doing all the other things I"m supposed to do (not release the club early; not flip; etc.).
Thanks for the kind words Brenk! I would say you likely wouldn't be thinking about that all at once....I would find your top 1-2 priorities with a coach and hammer those home!
It would interesting to actually measure tour pros grip pressure throughout the swing. I have to believe it increases at impact, I mean, it has to, right?? 😅
Oh for sure!! No way to ACTUALLY not increase but its just a FEEL to be aware of it and not OVERDO it is how I would look at it. No way to hit a ball and not increase........but REAL vs FEEL important here imo
I start out my rounds with not much tension in my grip. But, by the middle of my round I have a death grip on the club. It's a result of unexpected miss hits. I get a lot of surprise shots from hell...
The one piece of this puzzle I still struggle with is wrist cock. Tension seems to limit your wrists. It's harder to hit ball first. But relaxed wrists have no control. Your video seems to show no purposeful cocking of the wrists.
Thats correct Try this one for the details on wrist hinge/timing/feels/effects: th-cam.com/video/GzfQXuuO-ts/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUTRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIGhpbmdlIA%3D%3D
It was once described to me that from a tension point of view, every swing should feel like a smooth 3/4 wedge. As a strangler of the golf club, I can’t do it. But hope springs eternal.
By actual, precise, estimated count, I have watched 4,976 golf videos. This is the best I've ever seen. Great job, Eric!
Lol :) Appreciate ya Art!

@@CogornoGolf Follow-up after a month. Most consistent I've ever been. Down in low 80s, a few times into the 70s. Thanks again!
I truly believe when the wheels fall off, it's best to take a break. Forcing yourself engrains bad habits in my humble opinion.
I am 77 and just took up golf in my 50’s. This video was the best game changer. First day I took the new method to the course I was amazed. Thanks
