Two recommendations I would strongly encourage before going further. First, replace that rear main seal on the engine. Second, at the very least, replace the tappet cover gasket on the side of the block. They are notorious for leaking. If the budget allows, look into buying a billet tappet cover which will use a much better seal design. Those are two major leaks you don't want and are easy to fix at this stage.
@@WaldosWorld - I am doing a 12v Cummins/Eaton Fuller into a '94 suburban project and so I need to ask the same set of questions. What is the model number for the Eaton gearbox you are using. What are the part numbers for the; bellhousing flywheel pressure plate clutch disc TO bearing etc. etc. Did you have to fab up your own clutch linkage? What bits and pieces did you use? I am not able to do the work myself so I finally managed to find a shop that has agreed to do the motor swap. However, when I mentioned grafting on a 10spd Eaton gbox to the 12v, everyone looked at me like I was deranged. I had to send your videos to the mechanic. So, if you could share the part numbers I would be most grateful.
I'm 4 years late but was about to post the same thing. Billet covers are nice but for a low dollar fix you can RTV the stock cover in place. The problem is that the stock gasket pushes out at high rpm when the crankcase pressure gets high. Gluing it on fixes this. I've done it on 2 600+ HP builds and haven't had an issue.
Sure hope you make a video of the mating and the rest of the driveline in detail including how you hooked up the clutch and anything else needed to shift the transmission. It sure would help us considering there are no videos on youtube showing anything like it as of this date
I love watching all of your vids. The Volkswagen would be cool too. The beauty of those ISB engines is that they were used in medium duty trucks and so it’s easy to upgrade as long as you have room in your donor vehicle at firewall and transmission tunnel. You could fit a 10 speed transmission to that engine even
Thanks, Pete! Yeah, I think I lucked out finding this medium duty transmission with all of the necessary parts for the swap for such a good price...it seems like it's hard to find a 5.9 Cummins with a manual in a medium duty truck, but there are a few out there!
Waldo's World unfortunately they all went automatic years ago but slowly coming back in the heavy haulers. I’m a huge fan of the 8LL and 18 speed transmissions.
Great video Waldo. Personally I am not a VW guy but that's just me. The C3500HD drew me to the channel. Can you talk about why you are constantly in the dirt all the time? Do you not have a concrete slab or driveway or even just a piece of plywood? I have never pulled a motor on dirt, its always been in a driveway or garage, seems like a challenge.
Thanks, Carl! I have a dirt driveway and no concrete slabs (yet). It makes life difficult for now, but I plan on pouring a concrete slab in the barn so I have a place to work.
Remember working on the old NTC 855 Cummins when you puleed the fly wheel housing and replaced it you had to set up a dial indicator on the end of the crank and dial it in center before you torgued the bolts if not it would tesr up the transmission and the engine both it was close tolerance only +/- .0002 to .0005 ive sat under a truck up to an hour getting it as close to .0002 as i could posdibly get ....just so i knew it wasnt gonna fly all to hell within 25 to 30 miles if it lasted that long i got so good at it even the older mechanics would ask me to dial it in for them ...but most of the time we done an inframe instead of a block out overhaul
That's a good point you brought up. It prompted me to check the service manual to see if it required checking runout, but luckily, it seems like it's not necessary for this application
Think I would of changed the 2 core/freeze plugs on the back of the block and rear main seal it’s all apart and then your ready to do the paint the engine Also get some 3/4 plywood sheets to put your engine hoist on makes life easier your fighting with yourself all the time

I wish I knew a way to swap a manual transmission into my Titan XD with the 5.0 Cummins. I could figure the rest out, i just need a flywheel and bellhousing adaptor. A good tuner could do the ECU programming. I could find the clutch pedal, slave cylinder and clutch master cylinder myself and fabricate a bracket to mount it.
Im just now watching this. 1st screw long bolts into the flywheel to use as handles for the installation of the flywheel. 2nd never reuse flywheel bolts. 3rd why didn't you replace the rear main while you had it apart? The flywheel is a Cummins 3977281 and the clutch is an Eaton 107621-7. As for the flywheel housing, just do a search for "5.9 Cummins SAE 2 flywheel housing" (assuming the trans you end up using has an SAE 2 bellhousing) and you should find some results
I would like to say that I love your project and I was thinking about doing the same thing to another Chevrolet truck! But I was thinking about using a Power Stroke engine. I didn’t even know if the same transmission as yours would be able to bolt up the Power Stroke? Can you help me out with the information if it’s possible to work?
Thank you! You could probably make it work, but you would need an adapter to mate the Power Stroke flywheel housing to the Eaton bellhousing. You might be able to find something on the Interwebz since the Eaton uses an industry standard SAE 2 bellhousing
Great mechanical content. I have a 06 Ford F350 Powerstroke 6.0L with the 6 Speed manual trans. I have an eaton Fuller 9 speed transmission (from a donor semi truck) that i would like to swap into my Ford F350 Duallie. Any pointers/ suggestions. Thank you
Wow, a 2006 with a manual? That must be rare! As for the swap, I bet it'll be a very tight fit. You'll probably need to plan on doing a body lift, but it'll be a very cool truck when you're done. Good luck!
What kind of truck did you get the fly wheel and fly wheel housing from I am in the process of doing a Eaton fuller 6 speed swap myself my transmission came off a 7.3 powerstroke in a f750 and I’m having trouble finding answers
Waldo, I dont know if this has changed but man, you seriously need a better surface to work on. You are making life so difficult using casters on dirt. Pour a concrete slab somewhere, its not that difficult and you could do a vid series of the journey. Even pave your garage or something, anything other than dirt. Still great vids, I'm enjoying them slot.
If the transmission has an SAE #2 bellhousing, then it will fit the flywheel housing that I have, though the flywheel housing that comes on Dodge trucks is different
A few sheets of plywood on the ground would make life easier. For that matter a 3klbs/square inch pad 10 inch thick pad isn't that expensive. You could eventually install a two post car hoist. Maybe that could be another series.
I may have missed it, but why didn't you stick with the NV4500. I have a 94 GMC K3500 dually with 6.5l and NV4500 trans. By the way, great content and very well made vids, keep them coming.
Thanks! Mainly because the NV4500 that I have doesn't have a speed sensor or a parking brake (this application requires both). I stumbled upon this Eaton for a good price on eBay and it solved those problems, plus I thought it would make the project a bit more interesting 👌
