  • I was blowing up transmissions in my Dodge from hauling too heavy so I decided to take a tractor trailer transmission and put it in my truck. The transmission is a FRO-14210c which is about 250lbs heavier than the NV5600 that was in it. The truck also had s475/superB compounds, P-pumped 24v, propane injection, auto leveling air ride, 17.5” commercial rims and tires, track bars, manual front end lockout, fuel sump, and probably some more things I can’t remember. Here is a post on Cummins Forum for more pictures and info www.cumminsforum.com/forum/98.... #cummins #cumminsnation #dodgeram

    If you could make a "conversion kit" for this swap thatd be so damn awesome. Floating gears and not worrying about blowing a transmission with extra power torque. Great talent good job.

    Dude I dreamt of doing this to my 05 3500, I haul for a living and went through 3 nv5600s in a year and a half, loved the truck and manual transmission but not the headache of the trans, I’d of kept it if I could have done this conversion, incredible job 👍👍

    • @irionmotorsports
      @irionmotorsports  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks man. I always thought those nv5600's were some of the toughest transmissions until I blew 3 of them up. They just don't seem to hold up if you're towing heavy and I don't like the way they shift either.

    Would love a video on it if the new owner would bring it back . Particularly interested in the propane injection I've been wondering about doing that. Curious to see how you laid it out and what your experiences with it were

    • @irionmotorsports
      @irionmotorsports  ปีที่แล้ว

      It worked well. I made a plywood box for the bed of the truck and put 2 30lb cylinders in it. It probably added 50+hp when it came on, and helped with egt's and fuel milage. I have a propane filling station so I was getting it at $1.80 per gallon at the time. It was just a Nash Fuel kit off of ebay.

    I cannot believe how many NV5600's you blew up ! I know you're putting out a bit more HP than stock, but I tow heavy shit around every day in hilly VT and got 200,000 out of my stock Cummins 3500 without ever having a problem with the transmission. I can't believe the NP 205 never gave you trouble with the extra HP if the NV5600 couldn't handle it.

    • @irionmotorsports
      @irionmotorsports  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, it was the combination of the extra hp and weight. I was regularly exceeding 25k, sometimes as high as 30k. You could do that with a stock truck without issues, but when you add 200-300 hp it doesn't hold up. The np 205 is the toughest transfer case that ever came stock in a vehicle. I run one in my race car too, and I've never had a single issue with them.

    I’m sure by now you have already made your oil pan, but my first thought was that you should do a dry sump oiling system.

    • @irionmotorsports
      @irionmotorsports  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's something that I considered, but there's not much of an advantage in this case and lots of downside. This motor puts out more hp than I need, so I don't need the little bit that I would gain from a dry sump. The weight difference would be negligible. The biggest downside is adding a number of high probability failure points to my car. I would have to a scavenge pump with a belt drive to the bottom of my motor where mud and rocks could get in. If that belt gets destroyed I'm done. There's also a whole bunch more hoses and fittings that can fail. The whole point of using a Cummins in the first place is the simplicity and durability. Also, I'm a cheap SOB.

    Hey I'm very interested in following you 8m planning a swap to Eaton in my 2004 ram with the 48re I have had lots of heat issues with them hauling hay 40k lbs is just to much for the trans the rest of the truck handles fine I'm a rancher haul hay twice a month no other choice than a day cab or a swap. This is a great interest. I am running compounds as well.

    • @irionmotorsports
      @irionmotorsports  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Nice, good luck man. If you're hauling that much and putting and eaton in, you might want to take a look at your rear end while you're at it. I blew mine out about 200 miles from home. New bearings and a backlash adjustment would have saved me a lot of time and a ring and pinion set.

    Could a 3" body lift have eliminated the need to construct a new transmission hump?

    • @irionmotorsports
      @irionmotorsports  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It might work. The biggest issue is the width. The top corners on the transmission might hit on the edges of the transmission tunnel. I know there was a guy that put a body lift on his truck to put a roadranger in, but I don't know if it was 3" or 4".

    • @irionmotorsports
      @irionmotorsports  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There was no way to put a clutch brake in since I used the dodge clutch which is a push style. I just dealt with it. It's not hard to get used to. I would rarely stop at lights. Just put it in first and let it creep. It also didn't take quite as long to slow down as a big truck. Probably to smaller lighter clutch disks helped.

    someone recently told me that a 10 speed would fit into a dodge. I had no idea. I have an 89 dodge 1/2 ton. im wanting to swap it to a cummins as well as a manual trans. Now im not sure if i would actually swap in a 10 speed, but I would like to learn more about it because I never knew you could. what all would ya have to do to have a 10 spd manual or a 9 spd manual fit into a 1/2 ton?

    • @irionmotorsports
      @irionmotorsports  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't know where to start man. A 1500 can't handle that. The suspension can't handle the weight and the axles can't handle the torque. There's a reason why they only put the cummins in a 2500. There's a smaller 10 speed that fits a little bit better, but it's still a lot of work and leaves you without 4X4. Also, it only handles 600lbft of torque, which is not enough if you do any performance upgrades. Easiest thing to do is to just get a 2500 that's already set up. If you're really attached to that truck you could buy a 2500 for parts, build that truck the way you want and then drop the 1500 body on, but that would be a huge amount of work.

    • @brandonpropterhoc
      @brandonpropterhoc 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@irionmotorsports im gonna throw the 4bt in the truck because of the weight. Plus it is a bit more fuel efficient than the 6bt. I was just curious about a 9 or 10 speed manual transmission. Someone told me there is a "smaller 9 speed" that only weights about 250. Just wanted to get your perspective

    • @irionmotorsports
      @irionmotorsports  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Gotcha, that makes more sense. I wouldn't bother with a 9 or10 speed personally. I don't think 250lbs is accurate, and that's the weight without a transfer case. My 6sp nv5600 stock dodge transmission was over 300lbs. You could find a zf 5 or equivalent tranny that probably weighs around 150lbs without the t-case. Also, if you want 4x4 it's a huge amount of work. You really want to keep that thing light. The 4bt is pretty underpowered. You can get more power out of them, but not without really taxing the motor and blowing head gaskets. I had one in a van with o rings and head studs and it loved to blow gaskets. I wouldn't put a 4 bt in a vehicle that weighs more than 4k, 4.5k at most. I guess the question is why? Just because you can? If you want to build it just because, then go for it. I don't want to dissuade you from doing someting crazy just for the hell of it. However, if you're looking for something that is more functional and easy to drive on a regular basis, put the lightest, smallest tranny in that will handle the power. Have you considered an automatic with a manual valve body? I have one in my race car and it's awesome.
