    The A320 has zero wow factor. It's definitely a Honda Accord or a Toyota Camry. Good, solid aircraft, but nothing to get excited about. Speaking of getting excited....the decor in the Perth business lounge was beautiful. It's wonderful to see you flying again.

      Then you have its cousin the A321 being used for trans Atlantic flights, which used to be the domain of 747's, L10-11's and DC-10s. How times change.

    Thanks Paul for another lively, informative description of an aviation trip, this time in a Qantas A320, with video footage of culinary delights in the departure lounge, through to the spooling up of engines on take off, to the flying over of agricultural land with green and yellow fields (canola flowering) below and then descending into Kalgoorlie over a goldmine which yielded 14 tonnes of gold last year. Fascinating and interesting, well done. The joys of flying!

    Paul. as a Western Australian, you have my express permission to make as many jokes about us as you like. We deserve it! And yes, the FIFO phenomenon is an odd one. It's strange having such a large percentage of your city donning high vis vests and migrating back and forth every few weeks. It brings in the money and Canberra loves that about us. But those FIFO employees tend to burn out after a few years, owing huge amounts to banks as they need to finance loans they took out when they were earning insane amounts of money.

    • @PaulStewartAviation
      @PaulStewartAviation  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers. Yeah I'm a little nervous about making Perth jokes. I've found they tend to have a bit of a complex and are easily offended.
      And what you say is true about the FIFOs. Sometimes they take our massive loans once they realise how much money they'll make but after a few years the fifo lifestyle is just not sustainable.

    • @AlonsoRules
      @AlonsoRules 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      FIFO is brutal on the mind and when you have kids, they only see you 50% of the time

    • @PaulStewartAviation
      @PaulStewartAviation  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AlonsoRules oh absolutely. I see them at work. With a huge income it's tempting to get a huge mortgage and live a lavish lifestyle but it certainly takes an emotional toll. Then you get the 'garden handcuffs' and can't stop working so hard because you've got 3Mil worth of mortgages...etc

    • @blakejohnno5623
      @blakejohnno5623 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not entirely true, many FIFO organizations are moving away from traditional FIFO rosters for rosters that achieve a work/life balance. I am on a 4/3 (days) roster which is fantastic, I could do this for many years. Most staff I work with do 8/6, another very friendly roster. The mining organizations have realized burnout and worker retention is critical to ongoing operations. We are lucky with the current resource boom, however risks of lower commodity prices have been offset by organizations paying realistic wages, not the astronomically high wages we saw in the last IO boom.

    So interesting facts for you Paul - these aircraft used to operate in JQ livery with JQ crew back in ~2014-2015 using JQ crew who were MEL based and would do 3 day stints in WA for FIFO flights. These ended up being replaced for a couple of years with B738s until Network Aviation had their own flight crew trained to operate the A320s. They were then repainted in QFLink livery and transferred out of the JQ fleet to Network for the FIFO runs.
    I've done many of these in both the JQ and QFLink livery to various mines and countless F100s (as I think I mentioned to you on FB haha).

    • @PaulStewartAviation
      @PaulStewartAviation  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting! I'm only now learning about all of these different subsidiaries within QF. All to minimise tax and crew entitlements I'm assuming?

    • @jozdemir
      @jozdemir 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t believe so, up until 2011 Network Aviation was an independent charter airline and then Qantas purchased them, similar to how VA purchased Skywest to form VARA.
      So the F100s and A320s that run around in QFLink livery across WA are all operated by Network Aviation, but as a fully owned subsidiary of QF, as opposed to say Alliance that runs QF services under wet lease.

    Awesome flight & review Paul, I wonder if it's only me but I enjoy flights more when it's turbulant, had an awesome flight from Perth to Alice Springs back in 2008 after the Red Bull Air Race, we hit massive sink just after rotating & the plane dropped 50 feet then levelled out, pegged the throttles and zoomed up after regaining speed, the whole 4 hour flight was crazy dodging thunder storms all the way & I loved it! That was on a 737 which I love. I think maybe I like the Turbulence because I learnt to fly in Gliders so you feel every bump ha ha. Cheers for another great video!

      Sadly it’s been a while since I’ve visited last but that’s what I can remember of any significance in Kal :)
      I went to Goldfields Baptist College which sits right under the flight path for the smaller runway. Man, the days I used to Avgeek during lunchtime watching the RFDS come in with the PC-12 and PC-12NG, the Super King Air B200C’s plus Qantas with their lunch time departures with a B717-200 or B737-800 :)
      The last time I saw A320’s land in Kal was when SkyWest was still around with 1 A320 flight, then back in the 90’s and 2000’s, mighty Ansett having their A320’s come in regularly 🤩

Hope to get a chance to visit WA especially Kalgoorlie as we have relatives there also. The A320 aircraft, In my opinion its a great aircraft, Have not flown on what to date though I have flown on the smaller A319 from QR, pretty much same story, No IFE in Economy class, I had to make do with my smartphone, at least that was in 2017 and it was a 5 hour flight from my home SEZ-DOH-SEZ, as there were conflicts between Qatar and UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt at the time hence the flight had to fly over Oman. That was my only negative, I love the A320 family aircraft overall but QR could have updated their A319 at least.

    Great video as usual Paul. Love the look of the lounge in Perth, even the ‘planky things’😂😂.
    Apparently being lower to the ground is partially what has led to the 737 Max’s problems. The newer, larger engines wouldn’t fit under the wing so needed to be slung further forward, upsetting the aerodynamics and requiring the use of the MCAS.
    So while I agree it looks better, the A320 still has more options for fitting larger upgraded engines. I guess that is the difference of 20 years in aircraft design.

    Hi Paul, a great overview of the flight and contrasts from Perth to Kal.
    I was a “if it ain’t Boeing I ain’t going” guy although now an Airbus convert as I like their technology, their ride and overall appeal. Having spent many hours in A320’s that is a pretty average layout compared to the rest of the world - shame on Qantas not to have changed, especially for the leg room in the Aussie market.
    A special video for me, as I grew up in Kalgoorlie, began my Aviation career at the airport and now living here in Canada so nice to see home from afar. I’ve flown Kal to Perth many times in all sorts but never a short 47 minutes….
    Going back many years was MMA (Mickey Mouse Airlines) in Fokker F-28’s, F-27’s, SkyWest in Jetstream 31’s, BAE-100’s, Piper Navajo’s, Cessna 425, etc.
    Lastly, preserve the ‘fan roar’ of the V2500 / CFM-56 on the A320 (your other video) as the NEO’s are notably quieter on Take-off.

      @@PaulStewartAviation The Qlink A320 has flown Perth to Melbourne on a rare few occasions.
      Virgin Australia Regional also operates a fleet of A320s, some of these are former Ansett frames.
      I believe Network expansion with A320s is going to become more common, as Network have set up bases in Darwin and Brisbane, this is a Qantas ploy to undercut Mainline and eventually replace older 737s I believe and at the same time pay pilots abysmally as Network salaries are much to be desired for an A320.

      @@PaulStewartAviation It seems to be true. Perth used to have a lot more 737s based here. Once upon a time the handful of f100s they had used to service mine sites only. Now we have f100s and A320s servicing quite a few towns. About 7 to 10 Boeing 717s were based out of Perth with Cobham to service the towns alongside the 737s. Their pilots were paid a lot more than Network. Now all 717s are gone and 737s slowly dwindling.
      A320 Network first officers start around 90k base after year's of training and hour building. It is an insult to be flying an A320 on that sort of salary.
      All the contractors are bought up and there respective lower eba's are played off against each other. Meanwhile Qantas mainline keeps contracting. Look at Alliance e190s in Darwin and Adelaide. Horrendous pilot salaries and already reducing 737 flights.
